      • A Heart Rate Variability-based Smart Approach to Analyze Frailty in Older Adults

Joao Paulo do Vale Madeiro,Paulo Cesar Cortez,Arnaldo Aires Peixoto Junior,Joao Alexandre Lobo Marques,Antonio Alisson Pessoa Guimara,John Hebert da Silva Felix 한국산학기술학회 2015 SmartCR Vol.5 No.4

This paper presents an algorithm that applies metrics derived from automatic QRS detection and segmentation in electrocardiogram signals for analyzing Heart Rate Variability to study the evolution of metrics in the frequency domain of a clinical procedure. The analysis was performed on three sets of elderly people, who are categorized according to frailty phenotype. The first set was comprised of frail elderly, the second pre-frail elderly, and the third robust elderly. Investigators from many disciplines have been encouraged to contribute to the understanding of molecular and physiological changes in multiple systems that may increase the vulnerability of frail elderly. In this work, the frailty phenotype can be characterized by unintentional weight loss, as self-reported, fatigue assessed by self-report, grip strength (measured directly), physical activity level assessed by self-report and gait speed (measured). The results obtained demonstrate the existence of significant differences between Heart Rate Variability metrics for the three groups, especially considering a higher preponderance for sympathetic nervous system for the group of robust patients in response to postural maneuver.

      • EFFICIENT INVERSION OF LARGE OVERLAPPED BLOCK DIAGONAL MATRIXES

        Joao Silva,Rui Dinis,Nuno Souto,Paulo Carvalho 대한전자공학회 2015 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2015 No.6

The optimum separation of multiple users in cellular systems with universal frequency reuse involves inverting matrices large matrices where all elements are zero (or close to it), with the exception of the main diagonal, as well as a few elements in adjacent diagonals. One of those matrices is an overlapped block diagonal matrix, which is made of many small square matrices along the main diagonal that partially overlap. In this paper we propose an efficient method for inverting this type of matrices. Our approach takes into account the zero elements of the matrices (optimized algorithms), and allows gains of 30% of the number of operations by using an optimized Cholesky algorithm, compared to an optimized Gauss algorithm.

Animation and Machines: designing expressive robot-human interactions

Joao Paulo Amaral Schlittler(장 파울로 스클리터) 한국만화애니메이션학회 2017 만화애니메이션연구 Vol.- No.49

Cartoons and consequently animation are an effective way of visualizing futuristic scenarios. Here we look at how animation is becoming ubiquitous and an integral part of this future today: the cybernetic and mediated society that we are being transformed into. Animation therefore becomes a form of speech between humans and this networked reality, either as an interface or as representation that gives temporal form to objects. Animation or specifically animated films usually are associated with character based short and feature films, fiction or nonfiction. However animation is not constricted to traditional cinematic formats and language, the same way that design and communication have become treated as separate fields, however according to Vilém Flusser they aren’t. The same premise can be applied to animation in a networked culture: Animation has become an intrinsic to design processes and products - as in motion graphics, interface design and three-dimensional visualization. Video-games, virtual reality, map based apps and social networks constitute layers of an expanded universe that embodies our network based culture. They are products of design and media disciplines that are increasingly relying on animation as a universal language suited to multi-cultural interactions carried in digital ambients. In this sense animation becomes a discourse, the same way as Roland Barthes describes myth as a type of speech. With the objective of exploring the role of animation as a design tool, the proposed research intends to develop transmedia creative visual strategies using animation both as narrative and as an user interface.

On the Use of Maximum Likelihood and Input Data Similarity to Obtain Prediction Intervals for Forecasts of Photovoltaic Power Generation

Joao Gari da Silva Fonseca Jun,Takashi Oozeki,Hideaki Ohtake,Takumi Takashima,Ogimoto Kazuhiko 대한전기학회 2015 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.10 No.3

The objective of this study is to propose a method to calculate prediction intervals for oneday-ahead hourly forecasts of photovoltaic power generation and to evaluate its performance. One year of data of two systems, representing contrasting examples of forecast’ accuracy, were used. The method is based on the maximum likelihood estimation, the similarity between the input data of future and past forecasts of photovoltaic power, and on an assumption about the distribution of the error of the forecasts. Two assumptions for the forecast error distribution were evaluated, a Laplacian and a Gaussian distribution assumption. The results show that the proposed method models well the photovoltaic power forecast error when the Laplacian distribution is used. For both systems and intervals calculated with 4 confidence levels, the intervals contained the true photovoltaic power generation in the amount near to the expected one.

      • Poster Session : PS 0137 ; Neurology : Risk of Multiple Sclerosis After Optic Neuritis

        ( Joao Pereira ),( Julio Fernandes ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

When assessing and managing a patient with optic neuritis (ON), the risk of future development of multiple sclerosis (MS) is an important issue, as this can be the fi rst presentation of the disease. Although the presence of lesions on baseline brain MRI is the strongest predictor of MS conversion, some patients with normal imaging also develop MS. We aimed to estimate MS risk in patients with ON and a normal baseline MRI and identify individuals with higher risk of conversion. We performed a retrospective study including patients with idiopathic ON and normal baseline brain MRI who presented to our hospital over an 8 year period. Of a total of 42 patients, 10 converted to MS: fi ve during the fi rst follow-up year, seven during the fi rst 2 years and all of the patients within the fi rst 5 years, with a 5 year MS conversion rate of 23.8%. MS conversion rates were signifi cantly higher in patients with history of previous symptoms suggestive of demyelination (p = 0.002), cerebrospinal fluid oligoclonal bands unmatched in serum (p = 0.004) and incomplete visual acuity recovery (a≤6/12) after 1 year (p = 0.002). Lower conversion rates were found in patients with optic disc edema (p = 0.022). According to these results, a signifi cant proportion of patients with idiopathic ON and a normal baseline brain MRI will develop MS, with a higher risk during the fi rst 5 years. Therefore, in the presence of factors in favor of MS conversion, close follow-up, including semestral medical consultations and yearly brain MRI, can be recommended. Early immunomodulatory treatment may be individually considered as it can delay conversion and reduce new lesion development rate.
