Objectives :The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of aroma therapy on sleep disorder patients with musculoskeletal pain. Methods :The 44 patients were divided into 2 groups: Experimental group(Exp. group) was treated with aroma therapy and control group was treated except aroma therapy. To evaluate the efficiency of aroma therapy, the Korean sleep scale A(Jin-Joo Oh, Mi-Soon Song, Sin-Mi Kim. 1998) and visual analogue scale(VAS) were applied before treatment and after 5 days treatment. Results :1. The Experimental group has improved statistical significance in sleep disorder score as compare to the control group. 2. The improvement of sleep disorder score of Exp.group has difference according to impression. 3. The improvement of sleep disorder has an effect on pain decrease. Conclusions :Aroma therapy has effects of improvement on sleep disorder with musculoskeletal pain.

A 24-year-old woman, gravida 1 and para 1, visited our emergency center with massive vaginal bleeding for a day. She underwent Cesarean section(C/S) using Misgav Radah Israel Method, at local obstetric clinic 4 months ago. She showed clear mentality but hemostatic instability at arrival in our emergency center. We performed the central venous catheterization on right jugular vein and transfused 3 units of packed red blood cells (PRC). And then16-French Foley catheter was inserted into vagina and ballooned for hemostasis. In the laboratory tests after blood transfusion, the WBC, hemoglobin, platelet count, activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time were 15,020/mm3 (4,000~10,000/mm3), 8.1 g/dL (12.0~16.0 g/dL), 306,000/mm3 (150,000~450,000/mm3), 31.3seconds (22.0~37.0 seconds), and 14.7seconds (10.0~14.0 seconds) respectively. The Abdomen aorta Angiographic Computed tomography demonstrated subtle tortious vascular lesion on the right side of the uterine body with large amount of blood clot in the vaginal cavity during transfusion. We could find out the cause of delayed postpartum bleeding from the vascular imaging. It resulted from the acquired vascular shunt between uterine arcuate artery and circulating artery after malposition of layers during C/S. During imaging work-up, blood pressure fell to 74/46 mmHg with drowsy mentality and vaginal bleeding was aggravated. So, we added to transfuse 5 units of PRC, total 8 units. As more transfusion, uterine artery embolization was promptly performed. Totally 13 units of PRCs and 8 units of FFP were transfused for 2 days. The patient maintained hemodynamic stabilization. Fortunately, she was recovered very well and discharged without complications in four hospital days. This case showed the value of vascular imaging and intervention in the initial management of delayed postpartum bleeding. First of all, the proper layer by layer suture technic when repairing the uterine wound during C/S is mandatory.

Synthesis of biodiesel from an oil fraction separated from food waste leachate

Biodiesel was produced from an oil fraction separated from food waste leachate, using a batch reactor system, to evaluate its potential as a renewable energy source for the first time. In order to reduce the free fatty acid content of the leachate oil fraction, three different acid catalysts, H2SO4, zeolite and Amberlyst-15, were used in the pretreatment process. The residual oil fraction after pretreatment was further treated over KOH as a base catalyst to produce a fatty acid methyl ester (FAME). The FAME content in the product was analyzed using GC/MS. A large number of different FAMEs were detected, which is characteristic of the food-waste-derived raw material used in this study. The FAME content of the product was highest when pretreated over Amberlyst-15, followed by trans-esterification. Additional refining and process optimization would be expected to further increase the FAME content. Therefore, it was concluded that the production of biodiesel from the oil fraction separated from food waste leachate is promising.

The aim of the present work was to investigate the effect of NaCl concentration on the emulsifying and rheological properties of porcine myofibrillar protein (MF)-stabilized soybean oil and fish oil emulsion (SO-EMs and FO-EMs). Emulsions (EMs) were prepared from 1% MF with 10% SO or FO at various NaCl concentration (0-0.5 M). The emulsifying ability index (EAI) of the EMs increased with increasing NaCl concentration for both oil types. Conversely, increasing NaCl manifested decrease in the emulsion stability index (ESI). In addition, creaming index (CI) also increased with NaCl concentration. From the microscopic observation, droplets of the EMs were more aggregated at relatively higher NaCl concentrations, especially for FO-EMs. All EMs had a gel-like structure owing to G' > G" from the rheological analysis. Comparing the oil types, the emulsifying capacity of SO-EMs was more stable than that of FO-EMs at all NaCl concentrations as determined from the CI value and microscopic observation. Therefore, it can be concluded that SO-EMs and FO-EMs are more stable at relatively lower concentrations of NaCl. In addition, the dispersed stability of SO-EMs was better than that of FO-EMs at the same concentration of NaCl.

Background: The most widely used circulating tumor cell (CTC) isolation techniques rely on antibody-based capture of CTCs, which express epithelial cell surface markers that are absent from normal leucocytes. Among these, epithelial cell adhesion molecule (Ep- CAM) is most commonly used. Although this platform is the most standardized of any current technology, it suffers from relatively low sensitivity. Survivin is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein gene family that is highly expressed in most malignancies. Several studies have shown the prognostic value of survivin in various cancers, including lung cancer. But the diagnostic signifi cance of survivin for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains controversial.The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of survivin-expressing CTCs in peripheral blood of patients with NSCLC. Methods: Blood samples were collected from patients with NSCLC before treatment and healthy volunteers. The EpCAM- and survivin- expressing CTCs were detected by real-time quantitative PCR. Results: To date, 43 patients with NSCLC stages I-IV and 15 healthy controls, all aged 52-79 years were enrolled in the study. Survivin mRNA was detected in the CTCs. Survivin- expressing CTCs were upregulated with more than 2-fold difference as compared with controls (p=0.004). EpCAM was not signifi cantly different between NSCLC patients and controls (p=0.409). No correlation between the survivin-expressing CTCs levels and the stage of disease and histology can be made at this point. Conclusions: We demonstrated the signifi cant difference in the levels of survivin-expressing CTCs between NSCLC patients and controls. These results suggest that survivin might be useful molecular marker for CTCs.

<B>ABSTRACT</B><P>Bacteria form biofilms by adhering to biotic or abiotic surfaces. This phenomenon causes several problems, including a reduction in the transport of mass and heat, an increase in resistance to antibiotics, and a shortening of the lifetimes of modules in bioindustrial fermentors. To overcome these difficulties, we created a biofilm production-deficient <I>Escherichia coli</I> strain, BD123, by deleting genes involved in curli biosynthesis and assembly, Δ(<I>csgG-csgC</I>); colanic acid biosynthesis and assembly, Δ(<I>wcaL-wza</I>); and type I pilus biosynthesis, Δ(<I>fimB-fimH</I>). <I>E. coli</I> BD123 remained mostly in the form of planktonic cells under the conditions tested and became more sensitive to the antibiotics streptomycin and rifampin than the wild-type <I>E. coli</I> MG1655: the growth of BD123 was inhibited by one-fourth of the concentrations needed to inhibit MG1655. In addition, the transformation efficiency of BD123 was about 20 times higher than that of MG1655, and the production and secretion of recombinant proteins were ∼16% and ∼25% greater, respectively, with BD123 than with MG1655. These results indicate that the newly created biofilm production-deficient strain of <I>E. coli</I> displays several key properties that substantially enhance its utility in the biotechnology arena.</P>
