This article aims to examine through text analysis why the Seonghwangdang(城隍堂, the shrine for a tutelary Deity) by Bi-seok Jeong became one of the canons of Korean literature and survived in the history of Korean literature. I will also try to compare this novel with a scenarios available as of now, because it was the original of radio dramas, plays, and movie scenarios. It is the first time to analyze the scenario of “Seonghwangdang”, and can be a key to investigate that the unconscious of the novel “Seonghwangdang” is oriented towards textualization of the Forest Land Survey Project by Japanese Government in General in Korea. If you read this novel without knowing the details of Forest Land Survey Project and violations of Forest Ordinance, you will understand them in the way that it is only a matter of Japanese oppression and the modern law. But reading it along with the scenario, you can grasp the process of charcoal grilling worker Hyun-bo's involvement in forest land crime concretely, realizing the reality of the time. We can find out in the scenario some parts which the author failed to represent in his original novel unconsciously. This is related to the unconscious of text, occurring in the process of readers’ enjoying the text at that time. The health of Soon-i and Hyun-bo, represented in the novel, is not only directed to ‘the Joseonness’ pursued by the movies of the time, but also reveals the process of implementing Forest Land Survey Project. This is examined to be an implicit content that is later approved as a canon of Korean literature.

Park, Jin-Sook. “Death and Resurrection in The Penelopiad: Focusing on the Representation of Heterotopia.” Modern Studies in English Language & Literature 64.4 (2020): 25-49. The purpose of this paper is to examine death and resurrection in Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad from the representational standpoint of heterotopia. Heterotopias, a concept articulated by Foucault, are “actually realized utopian spaces” - that is, ‘hetero-’, different spaces or counter-sites in a kind of both mythical and real contestation of the place in which we live, as all the other real arrangements that can be found within society. Penelope and twelve maids are making their own stories in Hades, the space of death and a counter-site as a heteropia. They are alternately weaving and unweaving shrouds. It shows the weavers’ power of destruction (unravelling) and creation (reweaving), metaphorically. To resurrect women’s own lives, they also perform a ‘ritual’ that looks back at their traumatic memories, and represent them in chorus on the ‘stage’ with dances, a lecture, a court trial and several types of songs. Death and resurrection are pivotal subjects in this work. Death serves as an equalizer, eliminating class or gender differences between maid servants, Penelope and Odysseus. Even though Penelope regards the twelve maids with deep sympathy, she is unable or unwilling to rescue them from death in the end. She even participates in the awful mass execution indirectly. However, it is a painful choice for Penelope to survive and it represents her reality as a woman symbolically. (Namseoul University).

This study examines the spectral characteristics of English voiceless fricatives depending on the manner and place of articulation, gender, age, the post-fricative vowel height, and the location in a word based on the Buckeye Corpus of Spontaneous American English Speech. The acoustic analysis results indicate that fricative duration, the center of gravity (COG), variance and skewness play a role in distinguishing all English voiceless fricative articulation places, despite variation in gender, age, the location in a word and the post-fricative vowel height. These acoustic parameters distinguished the sibilant /s, ∫/ from the non-sibilant fricatives /f, Ɵ/, and alveolar /s/ from palate-alveolar /∫/, labiodental /f/ from interdental /Ɵ/: fricative duration, COG, and variance of the sibilant fricatives were significantly longer/higher than those of the non-sibilant fricatives. Skewness was high for the non-sibilant fricatives and low for the sibilants. (Korea Polytechnic College)
An Analysis of Korean University Students’ Demotivation and Remotivation in the EFL Classroom
Jinsook Lee 한국영어어문교육학회 2018 영어어문교육 Vol.24 No.1
This study investigated the demotivation and remotivation factors of English learning for Korean university students in EFL situations. The sample group totaled 175 university students who took various types of English courses. The data collection consisted of a survey with closed questions, and individual interviews with a randomly selected sample of the student population. The data was processed by frequency and correlation analysis as well as a one-way analysis of variance based on participants’ TOEIC scores. The findings were split into three categories: remotivation methods, demotivation factors, and remotivation factors. The findings highlighted that low-level students lacked remotivation methods while high-level students used remotivation methods more frequently. The main demotivation factors were lack of basic language ability and the core focus on tests. The leading remotivational factors were triggered by receiving satisfactorily high test scores and future job prospects. Additional significantly different results by student level are noted.

The present study aims to investigate whether Korean EFL high school students engage in phonological coding when learning English vocabulary and whether phonological accessibility affects their vocabulary learning. Ninety-nine EFL Korean high school students participated in an experiment based on a 2x2 factorial design. The independent variables were learning condition (control versus articulatory suppression) and stimulus word type (phonologically regular versus irregular) and the dependent variable was short-term recall task scores. The findings showed a statistically significant main effect of learning condition and word type on the recall scores, and an interaction effect of the two independent variables on the recall scores. These results suggest that Korean EFL high school students do in fact engage in phonological coding when learning English vocabulary, that phonological accessibility is positively related to English vocabulary learning, and that interference with phonological coding is a more significant factor when learning phonologically irregular as opposed to regular words.
