        Influence of Rashba Spin-orbit Coupling on Fano-Kondo Effect in a Parallel Double-quantum-dot Structure

        Electron transport through a parallel double-quantum-dot structure is theoretically studied withone dot in the Kondo region and the other one in the region of local Rashba interaction. Thecoupling between the Kondo dot and the electron reservoirs is found to offer a reference channel forelectron travels, and the connection of the Rashba dot and the leads is found to afford a resonantchannel. The interplay of these two mechanisms gives rise to the Fano effect, which also depends onthe adjustment of the Rashba field. We then conclude that in this structure, the Fano interferenceis more robust because it causes a quenching of the Kondo resonance. In the presence of a localmagnetic flux, the quenched Kondo resonance becomes determined by the electron spin, which ishelpful for spin manipulation.

      • A Study on the Korean Translation of Du Fu’s “Spring View”

        The “Du Si Eonhae”is the first translated anthology when Hunminjeongeum Korean script was created, thus assuming paramount importance in the annals of translation history. The translation of “Spring View”, a representative work by Du Fu, epitomizes the quintessence of Chinese rhythmic poetry, and the initial iteration of this translation demonstrated a commendable level of accuracy. This serves as a testament to the nuanced comprehension exhibited by Koreans concerning the content, coupled with a deep understanding of various discussions passed down from China. Over the ensuing five centuries, various translations into modern languages have been attempted, often referencing the initial translation and incorporating some personalized expressions. Nevertheless, translators still carefully consider each word, suffix and even auxiliary word, earnestly seeking to overcome problems in existing translations and devise innovative translation methodologies congruent with Korean linguistic idiosyncrasies. This underscores the existence of a robust Chinese poetry translation community within Korea. The individualistic predilections and linguistic styles of distinct translators, compounded by varied social and cultural contexts, engender the differences among them. They carefully translate every word of the original text, try their best to embody the aesthetic form of the original text, adapt the rhymes to suit modern times, even try to adapt and reinterpret the ideas based on the original text. Through these various translation methods, they create rich and colorful translation works.

        Water photolysis at 12.3% efficiency via perovskite photovoltaics and Earth-abundant catalysts

        <P><B>The power of a pair of perovskites</B></P><P>In the past several years, perovskite solar cells have emerged as a low-cost experimental alternative to more traditional silicon devices. Luo <I>et al.</I> now show that a pair of perovskite cells connected in series can power the electrochemical breakdown of water into hydrogen and oxygen efficiently (see the Perspective by Hamann). Hydrogen generation from water is being actively studied as a supplement in solar power generation to smooth out the fluctuations due to variations in sunlight.</P><P><I>Science</I>, this issue p. 1593; see also p. 1566</P><P>Although sunlight-driven water splitting is a promising route to sustainable hydrogen fuel production, widespread implementation is hampered by the expense of the necessary photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical apparatus. Here, we describe a highly efficient and low-cost water-splitting cell combining a state-of-the-art solution-processed perovskite tandem solar cell and a bifunctional Earth-abundant catalyst. The catalyst electrode, a NiFe layered double hydroxide, exhibits high activity toward both the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions in alkaline electrolyte. The combination of the two yields a water-splitting photocurrent density of around 10 milliamperes per square centimeter, corresponding to a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 12.3%. Currently, the perovskite instability limits the cell lifetime.</P>

      • MMDB의 인덱스 선택 기준에 관한 연구

        데이터 처리 성능에서 메인 메모리 데이터베이스(MMDB)가 디스크 기반 데이터베이스(DRDB)보다 월등하여 국내외의 데이터베이스 영역에서 이슈가 되고 있다. MMDB 성능에 영향을 미치는 요소에는 CPU의 성능과 메모리의 크기 및 인덱스의 선택 둥이 있다. 이 중에서 MMDB 성능에 비교적 큰 영향을 미치는 요소는 인덱스의 선택 문제이다. 옵티마이저의 실행계획을 수립할 때, 인덱스는 최적의 경로를 찾도록 하는 전략적인 요소로서 그 구성에 문제가 있으면 최적화된 실행계획을 얻을 수 없다. 하지만 이러한 인덱스 선택 기준에 관련한 연구는 미미한 실정이다. 따라서 우리는 MMDB에서의 인덱스 선택 기준에 대하여 실험하고 연구하였다. 실험에 사용된 MMDB는 인기 있는 TimesTen MMDB 이다. 실험 대상 테이블에 대하여 인덱스가 없는 경우, T-Tree 인덱스를 생성한 경우, Bitmap 인덱스를 생성한 경우 등에서 데이터 량과 분포도를 각각 변화시켜, 어떤 분포도에서 어떤 인덱스가 유리한지 실험하고 인덱스의 선택 기준 결과를 얻었다. 본 연구의 결과는 실무에서 MMDB의 인덱스를 선 택하는 기준으로 사용될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

        Cultural Integration refers to the process of mutual combination and assimilation among different forms of culture or cultural materials, which is the mark of cultural assimilation and mutual interaction. It also means that different cultural materials penetrate into each other mutually until finally assimilated through reformulating each other in the process of integration. Translation, an important means of communication and exchange in all cultures, plays a role of a bridge in transmitting human culture and promoting cultural integration. With the development of modern science and technology, there are no time or space limits anymore while economic globalization and cultural integration conditions gradually become more mature. Economic globalization obscures international economies and brings into being a global economic structure which is beyond the state sovereignty, and it definitely has strong influence on the phenomenon of cultural integration. Transcription and literal translation have their advantages that mistranslation during the translation process or distortion of the original text by subjective understanding can be avoided. It also makes it possible to integrate other countries or other nations’ culture easily into the target language culture. Thus, transcription and literal translation is one of the important methods of cultural integration that overcame cultural barriers in the most direct and effective way to increase and embrace common grounds among the exotic cultures with different cultural characteristics.

      • Scheduling policies in flexible Bernoulli lines with dedicated finite buffers

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This paper is devoted to studying scheduling policies in flexible serial lines with two Bernoulli machines and dedicated finite buffers. Priority, cyclic and work-in-process (WIP)-based scheduling policies are investigated. For small scale systems, exact solutions are derived using Markov chain models. For larger ones, a flexible line is decomposed into multiple interacting dedicated serial lines, and iteration procedures are introduced to approximate system production rate. Through extensive numerical experiments, it is shown that the approximation methods result in acceptable accuracy in throughput estimation. In addition, system-theoretic properties such as asymptotic behavior, reversibility, and monotonicity, as well as impact of buffer capacities are discussed, and comparisons of the scheduling policies are carried out.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> An analytical model of scheduling policies in a flexible Bernoulli two-machine line is presented. </LI> <LI> Markov chain and decomposition methods are introduced to evaluate system production rate. </LI> <LI> Three scheduling policies are considered: priority, cyclic, and WIP-based policies. </LI> <LI> Conservation of flow, monotonicity and asymptotic properties are analyzed. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Prevention of acetaminophen-induced hepatocyte injury: JNK inhibition and GSTA1 involvement

        Background Glutathione S-transferase A1 (GSTA1) is a detoxification enzyme and a sensitive marker for hepatotoxicity. We investigated the effects of JNK inhibition on different degrees of Acetaminophen (APAP)-induced hepatocyte injury and GSTA1 expression. Objective This study aimed to investigate the role of JNK signaling pathway in APAP-induced different degrees of hepatocyte injury and its correlation with GSTA1 by inhibiting the phosphorylation of JNK by SP600125. Results 6 and 8 mM APAP induced different degrees of hepatocyte injury and apoptosis, both activated JNK signaling pathway. In contrast, JNK inhibitor significantly reduced activation of JNK and c-JUN on exposure to APAP. Meanwhile, the levels of hepatocyte injury, oxidative stress, and apoptosis obviously decreased. Importantly, GSTA1 expression was significantly increased by JNK inhibition. Conclusions JNK inhibition attenuates APAP-induced hepatocyte injury and oxidative stress and increases GSTA1 expression.
