Ultrasonic method for measuring the gas holdup of gas-liquid bubbly flow in a small-diameter pipe

        Ning-De Jin,Zheng Gong,An Zhao,Lu-Sheng Zhai,Ying-Yu Ren 한국화학공학회 2016 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.33 No.4

Based on ultrasonic sound pressure attenuation, the ultrasonic pulse transmission method is proposed for measuring gas holdup in gas-liquid two-phase bubbly flows. Two ultrasonic transducers are positioned on opposite sides of a vertical upward pipe with an inner diameter of 20 mm. To obtain the relationship between ultrasonic attenuation and gas holdup, the mean value of the first pulse sequence of ultrasonic signals is first extracted as the measured signal. We used the quick closing valve method to obtain the gas holdup as the set value. Second, the relationship between the gas holdup and measured ultrasonic signals was established. The experiment result shows that the ultrasonic attenuation rate is significantly different at low and high gas holdups, as indicated by the bubble size images with a high-speed camera. We also investigated the ultrasonic field distribution using numerical simulation. The bubble size has an important effect on the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient, which provides a further physical explanation and reference for the experimental phenomena.

Cloning, Expression, and Characterization of Thermostable Manganese Superoxide Dismutase from Thermoascus aurantiacus var. levisporus

        Ning-Ning Song,Yan Zheng,Shi-Jin E,Duo-Chuan Li 한국미생물학회 2009 The journal of microbiology Vol.47 No.1

A superoxide dismutase (SOD) gene of Thermoascus aurantiacus var. levisporus, a thermophilic fungus, was cloned, sequenced, and expressed in Pichia pastoris and its gene product was characterized. The coding sequence predicted a 231 residues protein with a unique 35 amino acids extension at the N-terminus indicating a mitochondrial-targeting sequence. The content of Mn was 2.46 µg/mg of protein and Fe was not detected in the purified enzyme. The enzyme was found to be inhibited by NaN3, but not by KCN or H2O2. These results suggested that the SOD in Thermoascus aurantiacus var. levisporus was the manganese superoxide dismutase type. In comparison with other MnSODs, all manganese-binding sites were also conserved in the sequence (H88, H136, D222, H226). The molecular mass of a single band of the enzyme was estimated to be 21.7 kDa. The protein was expressed in tetramer form with molecular weight of 68.0 kDa. The activity of purified protein was 2,324 U/mg. The optimum temperature of the enzyme was 55°C and it exhibited maximal activity at pH 7.5. The enzyme was thermostable at 50 and 60°C and the half-life at 80°C was approximately 40 min.

        Ning-ning Wang,Yun-xiang Lan,Jie He,Rui Dong,Jin-song Hu 대한화학회 2013 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.34 No.9

The layered KTiNbO5 was successfully synthesized with titanium(IV) isopropoxide and niobium oxalate by a novel polymerized complex (PC) method. The morphology and structure of the as-prepared sample was characterized by means of High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope, powder X-ray diffraction, and Laser Raman Spectroscopy. The spectral response characteristic was recorded by using UV-vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy. Results show that KTiNbO5 as-prepared by PC method presents an uniform morphology of nano-particles, the mean particle sizes is ca. 28 nm corresponding to the (002), and the crystal structure can be well indexed to the orthorhombic phase. The sample as-prepared by PC method has higher band gap energy than that of the sample prepared by a solid-state reaction method due to the quantum size effect.

Effect of wind time on the dispersal capacity of Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura (Hymenoptera Trichogrammatidae)

        Jin-cheng Zhou,Qian-jin Dong,Tong-shu Zhang,Li-jia Duan,Su-fang Ning,Quanquan Liu,Yuan-yuan Li,Chun-xue Li,Hui Dong 한국응용곤충학회 2019 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.22 No.3

The efficacy of Trichogramma against pests basically depends on the dispersal capacity of the wasps. A releaserecapture method was used in this study to evaluate the effect of relative wind speed (RWS) during the nighttime and the daytime on the dispersal capacity of postrelease population of Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura. Two repeated measurements were carried out, using sentinel cards with the host eggs and yellow sticky card traps on the third and the sixth day after wasp release. The results showed that: (1) both the number of recaptured wasps and parasitized eggs increased with the RWS in the daytime during the first three days. The number of parasitized eggs also increased with the RWS in the daytime over the latter three days. The distances that encompassed 98% recaptured T. dendrolimi adults (X 98 ) at the first three days was quadratically increased by the RWS of the daytime. (2) The number of wasps recaptured decreased with the distance from the releasing point during the first three days, but it was not influenced by the distance from the releasing point during the latter three days. (3) The average dispersal radius of the wasps during the first three days was shorter than during the latter three days. The present results will be helpful to improve release techniques based on the wind effects at different times.

      • Mechanistic Analysis of Taxol-induced Multidrug Resistance in an Ovarian Cancer Cell Line

        Wang, Ning-Ning,Zhao, Li-Jun,Wu, Li-Nan,He, Ming-Feng,Qu, Jun-Wei,Zhao, Yi-Bing,Zhao, Wan-Zhou,Li, Jie-Shou,Wang, Jin-Hua Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.9

Objectives: To establish a taxol-resistant cell line of human ovarian carcinoma (A2780/Taxol) and investigate its biological features. Methods: The drug-resistant cell line (A2780/Taxol) was established by continuous stepwise selection with increasing concentrations of Taxol. Cell morphology was assessed by microscopy and growth curves were generated with in vitro and in vivo tumor xenograft models. With rhodamine123 (Rh123) assays, cell cycle distribution and the apoptotic rate were analyzed by flow cytometry (FCM). Drug resistance-related and signal associated proteins, including P-gp, MRPs, caveolin-1, PKC-${\alpha}$, Akt, ERK1/2, were detected by Western blotting. Results: A2780/Taxol cells were established with stable resistance to taxol. The drug resistance index (RI) was 430.7. Cross-resistance to other drugs was also shown, but there was no significant change to radioresistance. Compared with parental cells, A2780/Taxol cells were significantly heteromorphous, with a significant delay in population doubling time and reduced uptake of Rh123 (p<0.01). In vivo, tumor take by A2780 cells was 80%, and tumor volume increased gradually. In contrast, with A2780/Taxol cells in xenograft models there was no tumor development. FCM analysis revealed that A2780/Taxol cells had a higher percentage of G0/G1 and lower S phase, but no changes of G2 phase and the apoptosis rate. Expression of P-gp, MRP1, MRP2, BCRP, LRP, caveolin-1, PKC-${\alpha}$, Phospho-ERK1/2 and Phospho-JNK protein was significantly up-regulated, while Akt and p38 MARK protein expression was not changed in A2780/Taxol cells. Conclusion: The A2780/Taxol cell line is an ideal model to investigate the mechanism of muti-drug resistance related to overexpression of drug-resistance associated proteins and activation of the PKC-${\alpha}/ERK$ (JNK) signaling pathway.

Selective area epitaxy of complex oxide heterostructures on Si by oxide hard mask lift-off

        Ruiguang Ning,Soo Young Jung,Haneul Choi,Byeong-hyeon Lee,Min-Seok Kim,Hyung-Jin Choi,Jun Young Lee,Jin Soo Park,Sung-Jin Jung,Ho Won Jang,Sung Ok Won,Hye Jung Chang,Ji-Soo Jang,Kyu Hyoung Lee,Byung C 대한금속·재료학회 2023 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.19 No.2

Epitaxial complex oxide heterostructures on Si are an excellent platform for the realization of multifunctional electronicdevices to exploit the unique functionalities of the oxides that Si does not possess. It is often necessary to make patternsof epitaxial films on selected areas of Si. Here, a path towards the selective area epitaxial growth of complex oxide heterostructureson Si using a hard mask lift-off technique is reported. A water-soluble oxide (Sr3Al2O6) is used as a lift-offhard mask that can survive the high temperature (~ 750 °C) and oxidizing environments for epitaxial oxide growth and beselectively etched away subsequently using deionized water. It is found that the epitaxial growth of yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) buffer layers on Si is very sensitive to organic residues formed during photolithography. Island patterns of epitaxial(La, Sr)MnO3/CeO2/YSZ heterostructures are successfully fabricated on Si through the use of oxygen plasma treatment toremove residues. A simple and low-cost method to pattern complex oxide single crystals integrated on Si for the realizationof multifunctional oxide-integrated electronics is provided in this study.

Preclinical Study of Cell Therapy for Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head with Allogenic Peripheral Blood-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells

        Tao Zhang,Qiang Fu,Ning-Ning Tang,Qian Zhang,Yi Liu,Jia-Chen Peng,Ning Fang,Li-Mei Yu,Jin-Wei Liu 연세대학교의과대학 2016 Yonsei medical journal Vol.57 No.4

Purpose: To explore the value of transplanting peripheral blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells from allogenic rabbits (rPBMSCs)to treat osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Materials and Methods: rPBMSCs were separated/cultured from peripheral blood after granulocyte colony-stimulating factor mobilization. Afterwards, mobilized rPBMSCs from a second passage labeled with PKH26 were transplanted into rabbit ONFH models, which were established by liquid nitrogen freezing, to observe the effect of rPBMSCs on ONFH repair. Then, the mRNA expressions of BMP-2 and PPAR-γ in the femoral head were assessed by RT-PCR. Results: After mobilization, the cultured rPBMSCs expressed mesenchymal markers of CD90, CD44, CD29, and CD105, but failed to express CD45, CD14, and CD34. The colony forming efficiency of mobilized rPBMSCs ranged from 2.8 to 10.8 per million peripheralmononuclear cells. After local transplantation, survival of the engrafted cells reached at least 8 weeks. Therein, BMP-2 was up-regulated, while PPAR-γ mRNA was down-regulated. Additionally, bone density and bone trabeculae tended to increase gradually. Conclusion: We confirmed that local transplantation of rPBMSCs benefits ONFH treatment and that the beneficial effects are relatedto the up-regulation of BMP-2 expression and the down-regulation of PPAR-γ expression.

      • Copper Can Still Be Epitaxially Deposited on Palladium Nanocrystals To Generate Core–Shell Nanocubes Despite Their Large Lattice Mismatch

        Jin, Mingshang,Zhang, Hui,Wang, Jinguo,Zhong, Xiaolan,Lu, Ning,Li, Zhiyuan,Xie, Zhaoxiong,Kim, Moon J.,Xia, Younan American Chemical Society 2012 ACS NANO Vol.6 No.3

<P>Here we report the synthesis of Pd@Cu core–shell nanocubes <I>via</I> epitaxial growth, where the lattice mismatch is 7.1%. The synthesis involved the use of Pd seeds with different shapes (including cubes, cuboctahedra, and octahedra) for the epitaxial growth of Cu shells. Different from the conventional growth mode, Cu atoms initially nucleated only on a few of the many faces of a Pd seed, onto which more Cu atoms were continuously added to generate Cu blocks. Later, the Cu atoms also started to nucleate and grow on other faces of the Pd seed until the entire surface of the seed was covered by a Cu shell. As a result, the Pd seed was rarely located in the center of each core–shell structure. The final product took a cubic shape enclosed by {100} facets regardless of the type of Pd seeds used because of the selective capping of Cu(100) surface by hexadecylamine. The edge lengths of the Pd@Cu nanocubes could be tuned from 50 to 100 nm by varying the amount of Pd seeds while keeping the amount of CuCl2 precursor.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/ancac3/2012/ancac3.2012.6.issue-3/nn2050278/production/images/medium/nn-2011-050278_0001.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nn2050278'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
