        Pythium subutonaiense, A New Aquatic Oomycete from Southern China Based on Morphological and Molecular Characters

        A new species, Pythium subutonaiense, isolated from aquatic environments (lake) in China is being described based on morphological characters and molecular evidence. The isolates grew at temperatures between 5 ℃ and 38 ℃, and the optimum temperature was 30 ℃, with a radial growth rate of 17.6mm at 25 ℃ per day. It is homothallic and characterized by globose to sub-globose shaped and mostly terminal or sometimes catenulate hyphal swellings, filamentous non-inflated sporangia, and smooth oogonia with hypogynous and monoclinous antheridia that contained one plerotic oospore. In phylogenetic analysis, inferred based on the internal transcribed spacer region of the ribosomal RNA gene and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene, the new species formed a distinct lineage in Pythium clade B. Differences between the new species and phylogenetically related and morphologically similar species are discussed.

        Acupuncture for ventilator-dependent patients at a hospital-based respiratory care center: A randomized controlled trial

        Background: In intensive care units, mechanical ventilation is an important therapy to help patients with dysp- nea. However, long-term ventilator dependence would consume huge medical resources and increase the risk of morbidity and mortality. The aim of the study was to examine the efficacy of the acupuncture combined with western medical care on ventilator parameters in ventilator-dependent patients. Methods: In this clinical trial, 80 ventilator-dependent patients aged 20 to 80 years old were randomly assigned to acupuncture group and control group in the respiratory care center (RCC) of Changhua Christian Hospital. Besides regular medical care and therapy, participants in the acupuncture group received acupuncture therapy at the same 17 acu-points for 20 minutes once a day, a total of 12 sessions. The ventilator parameters were recorded to evaluate the respiratory efficiency for all participants. The primary outcome was rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI), and secondary outcomes were respiratory rate (RR), tidal volume (TV) and ventilation per minute (MV). Results: Though there was no significant difference in the parameter between the acupuncture group and the control group, we found the trend of decreasing RSBI in the acupuncture group. In subgroup analyses, the mean of RSBI significantly decreased 16.02 (with the SD in 60.84) in acupuncture group, while it increased 17.84 (with the SD in 39.38) in control group (p = 0.036) after 12 sessions. Conclusion: Acupuncture treatment can improve breathing ability of patients with respirator dependence in respiratory care center.

      • AtHAP3b Plays a Crucial Role in the Regulation of Flowering Time in Arabidopsis during Osmotic Stress

        The HAP complex has been found in many eukaryotic organisms. HAP recognizes the CCAAT box present in the promoters of 30% of all eukaryotic genes. The HAP complex consists of three subunits - HAP2, HAP3 and HAP5. In this paper, we report the biological function of the AtHAP3b gene that encodes one of the HAP3 subunits in Arabidopsis. Compared with wild-type plants, hap3b-1 and hap3b-2 mutants exhibited a delayed flowering time under long-day photoperiod conditions. Moreover, the transcription levels of FT were substantially lower in the mutants than in the wild-type plants. These results imply that AtHAP3b may function in the control of flowering time by regulating the expression of FT in Arabidopsis. In a subsequent study, AtHAP3b was found to be induced by osmotic stress. Under osmotic stress conditions, the hap3b- 1 and hap3b-2 mutants flowered considerably later than the wild-type plants. These results suggest that the AtHAP3b gene plays more important roles in the control of flowering under osmotic stress in Arabidopsis.

        Characterization of proteolysis in muscle tissues of sea cucumber Stichopus japonicus

        The proteolysis in muscle tissues of sea cucumber Stichopus japonicus (sjMTs) was characterized. The proteins from sjMTs were primarily myosin heavy chains (MHCs), paramyosin (Pm), and actin (Ac) having a molecular mass of approximately 200, 98, and 42 kDa, respectively. Based on SDS-PAGE analysis and quantification of trichloroacetic acid (TCA)-soluble peptides released, degradation of muscle proteins from sjMTs was favorable at pH 5 and 50°C. Proteolysis of MHCs was mostly inhibited by cysteine protease inhibitors, including trans-epoxysuccinyl-L-leucyl-amido (4- guanidino) butane (E-64) and antipain (AP). E-64 and AP completely inhibited the degradation of Pm and Ac, while iodoacetic acid showed a partially inhibitory effect. These results indicated that the proteolysis of sjMTs was mainly attributed to cysteine proteases. Avoidance of setting the tissues at 40–50oC and slightly acidic condition and inhibition of cysteine proteases are helpful for decreasing sea cucumber autolysis.

        A Retrospective Study of the Effect of Spinopelvic Parameters on Fatty Infiltration in Paraspinal Muscles in Patients With Lumbar Spondylolisthesis

        Objective: The effect on fat infiltration (FI) of paraspinal muscles in degenerative lumbar spinal diseases has been demonstrated except for spinopelvic parameters. The present study is to identify the effect of spinopelvic parameters on FI of paraspinal muscle (PSM) and psoas major muscle (PMM) in patients with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis. Methods: A single-center, retrospective cross-sectional study of 160 patients with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) and lumbar stenosis (LSS) who had lateral full-spine x-ray and lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging was conducted. PSM and PMM FIs were defined as the ratio of fat to its muscle cross-sectional area. The FIs were compared among patients with different pelvic tilt (PT) and pelvic incidence (PI), respectively. Results: The PSM FI correlated significantly with pelvic parameters in DLS patients, but not in LSS patients. The PSM FI in pelvic retroversion (PT > 25°) was 0.54 ± 0.13, which was significantly higher in DLS patients than in normal pelvis (0.41 ± 0.14) and pelvic anteversion (PT < 5°) (0.34 ± 0.12). The PSM FI of DLS patients with large PI ( > 60°) was 0.50 ± 0.13, which was higher than those with small ( < 45°) and normal PI (0.37 ± 0.11 and 0.36 ± 0.13). However, the PSM FI of LSS patients didn’t change significantly with PT or PI. Moreover, the PMM FI was about 0.10–0.15, which was significantly lower than the PSM FI, and changed with PT and PI in a similar way of PSM FI with much less in magnitude. Conclusion: FI of the PSMs increased with greater pelvic retroversion or larger pelvic incidence in DLS patients, but not in LSS patients.

      • An Improved Method of Maximum Power Point Tracking Strategy for Wind Power Conversion System

        The turbine speed loop adjustment is the key link of the designing of the controller for the fixed pitch variable speed wind energy conversion systems (WECS). Because of the strong nonlinear, big inertia and mechanical damping characteristics, it’s difficult to designing the controller of the wind power systems. In this paper, a small signal model is present, and based on the analyzing; a wind turbine speed loop regulator is designed. Then, a method of tracking the peak power conversion system is proposed, which is independent of the turbine parameters and air density. At last, simulation system is built, and the results of the simulation experiments show that, the performance of the controller algorithm meet the requirements of the MPPT without wind measurement.

        중국어권 한국어 문법서에 나타난 계기 관계 연결어미의 문법 기술

        본고는 중국의 한국어 문법 교육을 위해서 중국에서 출판된 20가지 한국어 문법서를 대상으로 계기 관계 연결어미 ‘-자’와 ‘-자마자’의 문법 기술 내용을 검토해 보고 문제점과 방안을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연결어미 ‘-자’와 ‘-자마자’는 모두 계기적 의미 기능을 갖고 있지만 각각 독립된 형태로 존재하므로 의미 차이가 있다. 한국어 학습자가 그 의미 차이를 정확하게 이해하고 활용할 수 있도록 하기 위해 본고는 계기 관계 연결어미 ‘-자’와 ‘-자마자’의 의미 기능과 통사적인 특징(서술어 제약, 주어 제약, 시상 제약, 서법 제약, 부정 표현 제약)에 대해 자세히 살펴보았고, 이를 바탕으로 중국에서 출판된 20가지 한국어 문법서에서 계기 관계 연결어미 ‘-자’와 ‘-자마자’의 의미 기능 정보과 통사적 정보를 분석하였다. 중국에서 출판된 20가지 한국어 문법서에서는 ‘-자’와 ‘-자마자’는 모두 계기적인 의미 기능을 갖는다고 기술하였는데 ‘-자’는 이외에도 ‘원인 이유’, ‘나열’의 의미 기능을 갖는다고 기술해 왔다. 그러나 같은 계기적 의미 기능을 갖는 두 연결어미의 의미 차이를 ‘-자마자’는 ‘-자’의 강조 형식밖에 언급하지 않는다. 그리고 중국 출판의 20가지 한국어 문법서에서 계기 관계 연결어미 ‘-자’와 ‘-자마자’의 통사적인 제약은 대부분의 문법서에서 서술어 제약만 기술하였고 주어 제약이나 시상 제약, 서법 제약 등에 대해 거의 언급하지 않는다. 한국어를 모국어로 하고 있지 않아 직관이 없는 한국어 학습자를 위한 한국어 문법서는 되도록 자세하고 명확하게 기술을 하도록 해야 한다. 따라서 조금 더 정확하고 정교한 문법서가 나올 수 있게 여러 방면으로 논의가 이루어져야 할 것이다. The purpose of this paper is to examine the contents of the descriptive grammar of ‘-자’ and ‘-자마자’ in 20 Korean grammar books published in China for Chinese Korean grammar education in China, and to present problems and solutions. The connective endings ‘-자’ and ‘-자마자’ both have sequential semantic function, but they exist in independent form, and that’s why they have difference in meaning. In order to enable the Korean language learner to understand and utilize the difference of meaning precisely, this paper examines in details the semantic function and syntactic features of the sequential relation of connective endings ‘-자’ and ‘-자마자’ (predicate constraints, subject constraints, tense constraints, mood constraints, negative expressions constraints). Based on this, it analyzed the semantic function information and the syntactical information of the sequential relation of connection endings ‘-자’ and ‘-자마자’ in 20 Korean grammar books published in China. In the 20 Korean grammar books published in China, ‘-자’ and ‘-자마자’ both have an sequential semantic function but it has been described that -자 has other semantic functions such as ‘cause / reason’, ‘enumerate’. However, the meaning difference of two connective endings who have the same sequential semantic function did not mention except the emphasis form of ‘-자’. And, in the 20 Chinese grammar books of Chinese publication, the syntactic constraints of the sequential relation of connective endings ‘-자’ and ‘-자마자’ are described in most grammatical books only in terms of predicate constraint, not mentioning subject constraints, tense constraints, mood constraints, etc. The Korean grammar for non native Korean language learners who have no intuition should be described as detailed and clear as possible. Therefore, it should be discussed in various ways so that more accurate and elaborate grammar can be found.

      • Analysis of Different Activation Statuses of Human Mammary Epithelial Cells from Young and Old Groups

        Human mammary epithelial cells have different proliferative statuses and demonstrate a close relationship with age and cell proliferation. Research on this topic could help understand the occurrence, progression and prognosis of breast cancer. In this article, using significance analysis of a microarray algorithm, we analyzed gene expression profiles of human mammary epithelial cells of different proliferative statuses and different age groups. The results showed there were significant differences in gene expression in the same proliferation status between elderly and young groups. Three common differentially expressed genes were found to dynamically change with the proliferation status and to be closely related to tumorigenesis. We also found elderly group had less status-related differential genes from actively proliferating status to intermediate status and more statusrelated differential genes from intermediate status than the young group. Finally, functional enrichment analyses allowed evaluation of the detailed roles of these differentially-expressed genes in tumor progression.
