C-reactive protein accelerates DRP1-mediated mitochondrial fission by modulating ERK1/2-YAP signaling in cardiomyocytes

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammatory marker and risk factor for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. However, the mechanism through which CRP induces myocardial damage remains unclear. This study aimed to determine how CRP damages cardiomyocytes via the change of mitochondrial dynamics and whether survivin, an anti-apoptotic protein, exerts a cardioprotective effect in this process. We treated H9c2 cardiomyocytes with CRP and found increased intracellular ROS production and shortened mitochondrial length. CRP treatment phosphorylated ERK1/2 and promoted increased expression, phosphorylation, and translocation of DRP1, a mitochondrial fission-related protein, from the cytoplasm to the mitochondria. The expression of mitophagy proteins PINK1 and PARK2 was also increased by CRP. YAP, a transcriptional regulator of PINK1 and PARK2, was also increased by CRP. Knockdown of YAP prevented CRP-induced increases in DRP1, PINK1, and PARK2. Furthermore, CRP-induced changes in the expression of DRP1 and increases in YAP, PINK1, and PARK2 were inhibited by ERK1/2 inhibition, suggesting that ERK1/2 signaling is involved in CRP-induced mitochondrial fission. We treated H9c2 cardiomyocytes with a recombinant TAT-survivin protein before CRP treatment, which reduced CRP-induced ROS accumulation and reduced mitochondrial fission. CRP-induced activation of ERK1/2 and increases in the expression and activity of YAP and its downstream mitochondrial proteins were inhibited by TAT-survivin. This study shows that mitochondrial fission occurs during CRPinduced cardiomyocyte damage and that the ERK1/2-YAP axis is involved in this process, and identifies that survivin alters these mechanisms to prevent CRP-induced mitochondrial damage. Gastric metastasis from breast cancer is rare and only six cases have been reported in Korea. Colon metastasis is more rare than gastric metastasis. We report a 63-year-old woman with gastric and colon metastases of invasive lobular carcinoma of breast. She was diagnosed as right breast cancer, received right modified radical mastectomy 10 years ago and has been treated with chemotherapy and hormone therapy. Investigating for melena and a small caliber of stool, we found gastric and colon metastases. The diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer was made through gross pathologic and immunohistochemistry staining. We report a case with gastric and colon metastases from breast cancer and a review of the associated six case reports in Korea.

We experienced a 25 year-old male patient with typhoid fever complicated with massive hemoptysis. Pulmonary complication in typhoid fever is very rare and to our knowledge, there has been no report of hemoptysis as a main cause of death with this disease. We herein report a rare case of typhoid fever.

암 환자의 혈장 Transforming Growth Factor-β1 농도

한국인의 대표적인 성인 고형 종양인 위암, 간암, 유방암과 소아 백혈병 및 2종의 소아 고형 종양 환자로부터 혈장 transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) 농도를 sandwich ELISA 분석법을 이용해 측정함으로써 TGF-ß1을 이 질환들에 대한 새로운 종양표지자 (tumor marker)로 사용할 수 있는지 검토하였다. 또한 연령 및 성별에 따른 혈장 TGF-ß1 농도의 정상치를 조사하였다. 신생아에서 70대까지 혈장 TGF-ß1 농도의 차이는 없었고 남녀간의 차이도 없었다. 위암 환자의 혈장TCF-ß1 농도는 16.0±6.8 ng/ml (평균 ±표준편차)로 정상 대조군의 TGF-ß1 농도 (8.3 ±5.0 ng/ml) 보다 유의하게 높았으나 간암, 유방암 환자의 혈장 TGF-ß1 농도는 대조군과 차이가 없었다. 그리고 위암 환자 16명, 간암 환자 8명, 유방암 환자 7명 중 각각 7명 (43.7%), 1명 (12.5%), 1명 (14.3%)에서만 혈장 TGF-ß1 농도가 증가되었다. 5명의 소아 백혈병 환자에서는 관해 (remission) 여부와 상관없이 혈장 TGF-ßl 농도가 모두 정상 범위에 있었으나 2명의 소아 고형암 환자에서는 종양 절제 전에는 혈장TGF-ß1 농도가 높았다가 절제 후 정상으로 떨어졌다. 결론적으로 1)정상인의 혈장 TGF-ßl 농도는 연령 및 성별에 따른 차이가 없다는 것을 알 수 있었고, 2)성인 고형암인 위암, 간암, 유방암에서는 낮은 민감도로 인해 TGF-ß1을 진단을 위한 선별 검사로 이용하기에는 부적절한 것으로 판단되었으며, 3) 정상 대조군보다 혈장 TGF-ß1 농도가 높았던 위암 환자와 종양 절제 전후로 혈장 TGF-ß1 농도가 민감하게 변했던 소아 고형 암 환자에 대해서는 향후 표본 수를 늘려 부가적인 연구를 해 야 할 것으로 사료된다. To evaluate the usefulness of transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1)as a new tumor marker, we determined the plasma TGF-ß1 levels using sandwich ELISA assay in cancer patients. Patients with three most common adult cancers in Korea (stomach, liver and breast cancer) and children's cancers (leukemia and two kinds of solid tumor) were enrolled for the study. Furthermore, 39 individuals were subjected to age and sex-stratified plasma TGF-ß1 analysis. No statistical difference was demonstrated with respect to age or sex. The mean plasma TGF-ß1 level (16.0 ng/ml) of stomach cancer patients was significantly higher than that (8.3ng/ml) of controls. However, there was no difference among the mean plasma TGF-ß1 levels of liver, breast cancer patients and controls. Seven of 16 patients (43.7%) with stomach cancer, one of 8 (12.5%) with liver cancer, and one of 7 (14.3%) with breast cancer showed higher TGF-ß1 levels compared to controls. Plasma TGF-ß1 concentrations of five leukemic children remained in the normal range regardless of the remission state. In contrast, initial high TGF-ß1 levels from two children with solid tumors returned to normal range on surgical resection of tumors. From the above results, we could conclude that plasma TGF-ß1 levels of apparently healthy individuals seem to be rather constant irrespective of difference in age or sex, and the plasma TGF-ß1 has the limited value as a screening test for the diagnosis of aforementioned adult cancers because of its low sensitivity. Finally, additional studies need to be pursed for the large number of stomach cancer and pediatric solid tumor patients in order to reach a secure conclusion on the usefulness of plasma TGF-ß1 as a tumor marker in these patients.

컴퓨터 비전 기술 기반 체감형 복싱 게임

본 연구는 컴퓨터 비전기술을 사용하여 사용자의 제스처를 인식하고 이를 통해 일반 PC 용으로 제작된 게임을 보다 현실감 있게 제어할 수 있도록 하는 기술을 제안한다. 키보드를 사용하여 제어하는 일반 PC 용 복싱 게임에 본 연구에서 제안하는 효율적인 시스템 구성과 정확하고 빠른 제스처 인식 기법을 적용하여 그 유용성을 검증하였다. 복싱 게임에서 요구되는 플레이어의 좌우이동과 펀치 동작을 정확하고 빠르게 인식하기 위하여 각각의 제스처를 구분하는 비전 시스템을 개별적으로 구성한다. 각 시스템에서 인식한 동작 데이터의 전송을 위해서는 수평 구조의 클라이언트-서버 모델을 적용하였으며, 제안된 기법을 적용하여 실험한 결과 기존에 쉽게 접할 수 있는 일반 PC 용 게임의 인터페이스를 대화형 인터페이스로 대체할 수 있음을 보였다. 이와 같이 단순히 키보드의 버튼을 누르거나 센서가 장착된 장비를 사용하지 않고 사람의 몸동작을 사용하여 게임을 제어하는 경우 게임의 현실감 증대는 물론 컴퓨터를 좀 더 사용자 중심으로 만드는 새로운 인간 친화적인 인터페이스가 가능하다.

유동상 생물막법을 적용한 BNR공법에서의 인제거 영향인자

In this study, the use of MBBR(moving bed biofilm reactor) process for Phosphorus Removal efficiency depending on seasons and the factors affecting phosphorus removal efficiency in the process is evaluated. As a result of experiment, T-P removal efficiency has its highest value in winter, (80.8%). and T-P removal efficiency has its lowest value in autumn, (49%). Optimum SRT for Phosphorus Revomal revealed is about 8.8 days and process performs more efficiently as the temperature decreases. It is accepted that nitrate to anaerobic zone is affecting the Phosphorus removal process. With increasing the organic loading rate, Phosphorus removal efficiency also increases. Also, an experiment has been conducted to find out the highest efficiency according to Media existence and it has revealed that Media addition provides better phosphate removal.

졸-겔법으로 합성된 폴리이미드/실리카 복합체의 환경적 물성에 관한 연구

Two types of polyimide/silica composite films were prepared using sol-gel method through hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetraethoxsilane(TEOS) with the polyamic acid(PAA) and end-capped PAA solution. Sample were characterized by the means of differential thermogravimetry, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, universal test, impedance analyzer, chemical resistance test, etc. All of the PAA/silanol solutions heat-treated at 300℃ for 6h were transformed to polyimide/silica composites. It has been demonstrated that the properties of polyimide/silica composites were affected by the amount of silica addition and the bond type existed between polyimide and silica.

턱걸이(Pull-up) 수행 시 숙련자와 비숙련자의 근육사용 차이에 관한 운동학적 연구

This study was conducted to find out the difference in the use of latissimus dorsi muscle and forearm muscles between skilled and unskilled people when performing pull-up. The subjects of the study were one skilled in the department of sports science at Soon-chun-hyang University, one unskilled person who had no problems with the musculoskeletal system over the past year, and a total of two people who could do pull-ups more than 20 times. A total of one experiment was conducted, and two tests were conducted. The electromyogram data of the light back and forearm muscles were compared using a wireless electromyogram measurement device (EMG). As a result of the study, first, when performing pull-up, the unskilled person performed the movement with the strength of the forearm muscle rather than the light back muscle compared to the skilled person. Second, when performing pull-up, the skilled person showed similar use of force in both pull-up movements, and for non-skilled people, the activity of the forearm muscle in the second movement was significantly increased.

저자들은 부갑상선절제술 이후에도 교정되지 않는 고칼슘혈증과 계속된 수양성 설사로 인한 하지마비 및 전신쇠약을 주소로 내원한 70세 남자환자에서 일반 화학검사, 호르몬 건사, 방사선 검사 등으로 VIPoma와 동반된 MEN Ⅰ으로 진단하여 외과적 절제술 후 수양성설사, 저칼슘혈증 및 고칼슘혈증이 호전된 1례를 경험하였기에 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. Multiple endocrine neoplasia I (MEN Ⅰ) is a genetic disorder that consists of neoplasia of neuroendocrine type in the parathyroid glands, in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas, and in the anterior pituitary gland. Primary hyperparathyroidism is most common feature of the MEN I and occurs is approximately 95% of patients. Pancreatic islet cell tumors occur in 40% of MEN I patients. Most of these tumors produce excessive amounts of hormone, such as gastrin, insulin, glucagon and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP). VIP-producing pancreatic tumors (VIPoma) associated with MEN I are rare and there was only one case report in Korea so far. Recently we experienced a case of MEN I, especially VIPoma presented in a 70 year old man. He got subtotal parathyroidectomy for hyperparathyroidism 5 months ago, but his symptoms of watery diarrhea, severe general weakness and paralysis of lower limbs were not improved and hypercalcemia, hypokalemia were persisted. On computerized tomography scan of abdomen, demonstrated a mass of 3㎝ in diameter at the tail of pancreas. Serum level of VIP hormone was 250pg/㎖ (normal range : 0∼23pg/㎖). After partial pancreatectomy, his symptoms were improved dramatically and biochemical parameters such as, serum potassium, calcium, and VIP returned to the normal ranges.
