Vol.53 No.4

This paper is a corpus-based study of Maritime English. Maritime English is an area of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) requiring special attention. Although grammar is important, vocabulary is the key difference among varieties of English. The purpose of this paper is to explore some vocabulary features of Maritime English extracted from the Maritime English Corpus (MECO) of Hong and Jhang (2010), referenced against the LOB or the BNC. This corpus-based lexical analysis has been made by compiling both a word-list of high frequencies in the MECO and a keyword-list referenced against the LOB with a WordSmith Tools 5.0 program. We also use a Perl program to extract noun compounds, to set up vocabulary lists, and to suggest how many words should be learned by beginning students (80% cumulative frequency rate) and by advanced students (90% cumulative frequency rate). We explore the distribution of parts of speech as content versus function words and point out significant differences between Maritime English and General English.

An Overview of Korean Sign Language

Vol.48 No.1

So far, I have offered an overview of KSL. The first section presented a history of sign language in Korea. Here, it was pointed out that KSL may belong to the JSL Family owing to the great influence of JSL during the 35 years of the colonization. In addition, it was examined that most educators and educational administrators have paid much attention to KSDSL because they believe, without any evidence, that it would improve Korean literacy. The second section was concerned with investigation of internal organization of signs and morpho-syntactic properties on the basis of distinctive research on linguistic properties of KSL. The third section was given a brief review of the research on the processing of the acquisition of KSL. Here, it was stressed that early exposure to both KSL and Korean provides the strongest support for the acquisition of literacy skills, It was pointed out that we should need a preliminary study regarding the processing of KSL acquisition for deaf children at the early stages. The fourth section presented the debate on the issue of the language of instruction in the classrooms with regard to Korean literacy and a mode of communication such as oralism, Sign Korean, or KSL. We first examined that the change from oralism to Signed Korean began in the late 1980s. The fourth section pointed out that very recent research showed that greater KSL proficiency contributes positively to the improvement in literacy skills of Korean deaf students. Finally, I have presented five kinds of direction for further research on KSL: (ⅰ) a bilingual and bicultural approach based on KSL as the primary language and Korean as a second language (ⅱ) an intensive KSL immersion program just like bilingual education for hearing minority-language students (ⅲ) the training up of teachers who are bilingual and bicultural (ⅳ) both KSL learning for hearing people and tests for interpreters (ⅴ) the production of deaf linguists for KSL analysis and research.

      • Sentiment Analysis and Networks of Shakespeare’s Tragedies through Dialogue Corpus

        Se-Eun Jhang(장세은),Kyung-Eun Lee(이경은),Jae-Hoon Kim(김재훈),Homin Park(박호민) 한국사전학회 2018 한국사전학회 학술대회 발표논문집 Vol.2018 No.8

        ○ The purpose of this study is to discuss sentiment analysis of major characters in Shakespeare`s tragedy plays using dialogue corpora, comparing two types of word-lists for sentiment analysis: AFINN(Nielsen 2011) and VADER (Hutto and Gilbert 2014). ○ First, (i) we try to investigate important tone patterns, using line graphs as time visualization, which both polarity(positive/negative) and intensity (strength) of all characters` sentiment valence sum in each of his 10 tragedy plays may show in order to uncover different types of Shakespeare`s tragedy. ○ In order to do, this, this study focuses on the comparison of sentiment analysis of Shakespeare`s love tragedies (Othello, Anthony and Cleopatra, and Romeo and Juliet) and love comedies(A Midsummer Night`s Dream, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and As You Like it), which Archer, Culpeper and Rayson (2005) classified. ○ Second, (ii) we will discuss some features of sentiment changes between characters within an act and across acts in the four tragedies through the development dispersion of emotional relationship. We also use bar graphs as time visualization, which means that knowing who is speaking to whom allows the flow of positive and negative sentiment valence sum to be tracked. ○ Finally, (iii) this study also attempts to visualize network structures connecting major characters in Shakespeare`s connecting major characters in Shakespeare`s tragedy plays to easily figure out their detailed emotion relationship, representing relation visualization.

Vol.20 No.4

This study is to investigate structural and functional features of English lexical bundles in the Biomed Corpus as a Life Science Corpus through key clusters analyses. Previous studies have identified lexical bundles using their different criteria, but in this study lexical bundles were extracted and identified in a limited number of frequent phrases in comparison to a reference corpus using key clusters analyses. Structural and functional classification of lexical bundles was made following recent work by corpus linguists such as Biber and Barbieri. We found that the lexical bundles that we dealt with represent both positive and negative keyness in value in the list of key clusters, just like keywords analyses. The article examines and discusses the distribution of the frequence category of lexical bundles, the ratio of type and token of nouns in the structures of ``the+Noun+of the`` and ``in the+Noun+of``, various types of passive constructions, and epistemic stance expressions standing out in functional distribution of lexical bundles in comparison to a reference corpus.

Vol.32 No.1

This study identifies themes and trends in maritime economics and logistics by examining 303 papers published in international journals from 2000 to 2014 using keyword network analysis. Network analysis can be used because the collected data follow Zipf"s law and the power law. Utilizing the degree centrality and betweenness centrality, we find the important keywords in each five year period and determine the importance of shared keywords. To further explain keyword centralities, we invented a Delta-C algorithm to show the trends of keywords over time. We found that degree centrality is useful for identifying important research themes in each period because it is mainly concerned with the number of connections. On the other hands, betweenness centrality is useful to determine the unique themes that emerge in each of the specific periods.

Vol.56 No.2

We compared the Korean Maritime Officer Certification Tests (MOCT) and two textbook corpora with some vocabulary covering 80% and 90% cumulative frequency of the Maritime English Corpus (MECO) to see the relationships between correlation coefficients using both quantitative and qualitative analyses. We tried to explain these differences and similarities through frequency ratio. We found that the MOCT showed a much lower correlation coefficient score with these MECO vocabulary words than the Busan Metropolitan Education Office Textbook (BUSAN) and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Textbook (MEST) did. The BUSAN and the MEST showed very high correlation coefficients. On the other hand, the MEST showed more similarity with the MOCT than with the BUSAN, though the difference is very small. However, when we observed the top 30 content words extracted from the MOCT for qualitative analysis of correlation coefficients, we found that the BUSAN seems to show more similarity with the MOCT than the MEST does, in contrast to their relationships between correlation coefficients using quantitative analysis.

A Corpus-based Analysis of English Abstracts of Korean Scholarly Articles

Vol.54 No.4

This paper reports on a corpus-based study of English for Academic Purposes (EAP). It investigates linguistic characteristics of English abstracts written by Korean scholars in the fields of English Literature and of English Linguistics in order to find lexico-grammatical patterns used by native and non-native English scholars specializing in English Literature and English Linguistics. The paper hopes to offer suggestions on suitable academic English pedagogical techniques, especially for English writing. In our study we compiled two English abstracts corpora from journals of English language and literature and journals of English linguistics from English-speaking countries and from Korea for the years 2000 to 2011: Anglophonic Corpus and Korean Corpus. Each corpus further yielded two subcorpora: native and non-native English literature corpora and native and non-native English linguistics corpora. Unlike previous studies focusing more or less on abstracts of native scholars, in this study abstracts of non-native scholars are compared to those of native scholars in the areas of English literature and English linguistics. This study contrastively analyzes abstracts in academic research articles in terms of two aspects: (i) native/non-native speakers’ distinctive use of language and (ii) linguistic features of abstracts as a genre. In particular, four types of methodologies (statistics, wordlists, keywordlists, and key clusters) often adopted in corpus-based analyses are used to explore characteristics of abstracts written by Koreans and by native speakers.

      • Functional Analysis of Lexical bundles in rhetorical move of research article abstracts in Applied Linguistics

Vol.2021 No.10

This comparative study aims to explore frequent four-word lexical bundle found in each rhetorical Moves of research article (RA) abstract and the relationship between functional distribution of lexical bundles and RA Moves. The two corpora used in this study were Native Research Article Abstract Corpus and Chinese Research Article Abstract Corpus, which were self-built out of research article abstracts from international and Chinese journals of Applied linguistics. The two corpora were manually tagged with rhetorical move information. Results indicated that differences and similarities of lexical bundle preference were found in the two corpora. For frequent bundles in the five Moves, we found more research-oriented and stance-oriented bundles for Move 1, research-oriented bundles for both Move 2 and Move 3, text-oriented bundles for Move 4, and stance-oriented and text-oriented bundles for Move 5. Comparison of functional distribution of L1 and L2 group showed that L2 writers demonstrated a tendency to overuse research-oriented and text-oriented bundles in Move 3 and Move 4, and underuse them in Move 5. L2 writers used heavily certain bundles in their RA abstract moves, which may indicate a lack of variety in the move rhetorical realization. Findings from this study may provide a positive reference for academic writing instruction in English for Academic Purpose.

A Corpus-based Cross-regional Study on the English Language Features in Marine Accident Investigation Reports

Vol.61 No.4

This study aims to analyze the English language characteristics of marine accident investigation reports from four continents, i.e. America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia. The examination from the perspectives of lexical complexity, lexical density, keywords and key clusters not only shows differences in words and expressions between non-English speaking countries and English-speaking countries, but also indicates that there are varieties even within the English language itself. Additionally, implications and suggestions from the corpus-based study results are offered to teachers, students and related practitioners for English for specific purposes concerning aspects of the application of advanced vocabulary in writing and the varieties in English itself. This study can shed some light on the teaching and learning process of maritime English, in particular for the writing of marine accident investigation reports.
