        • Recent galaxy mergers and star formation history of red sequence galaxies in rich Abell clusters at z ≤ 0.1

          We explored the GALEX UV properties of optical red sequence galaxies in 4 rich Abell clusters at z ~ 0.1. In particular, we tried to find a hint of merger-induced recent star formation (RSF) in red sequence galaxies. Based on the NUV - r' colors of the galaxies, about 36% of the post-merger galaxies were classified as RSF galaxies with a conservative criterion (NUV - $r^{\prime}{\leq}5$), and that number was doubled (~ 72%) when using a generous criterion (NUV - $r^{\prime}{\leq}5.4$). Post-merger galaxies with strong UV emission showed more violent, asymmetric features on the deep optical images. Also it turned out that all massive RSF galaxies (Mr' < -22 and NUV - $r^{\prime}{\leq}5$) exhibited post-merger signatures. Our results suggested that only 30% of RSF red sequence galaxies show morphological hints of recent galaxy mergers. This implies that internal processes (e.g., stellar mass-loss or hot gas cooling) for the supply of cold gas to early-type galaxies may play a significant role in the residual star formation of early-type galaxies at a recent epoch.

          Estimating Stranding Risk due to Hydropeaking for Juvenile European Grayling Considering River Morphology

          Extreme, short-duration fluctuations caused by storage hydropower plant discharges or ‘hydropeaking’ occur when hydropower is used to cover the peak electrical loading conditions of a power network. The overall effects of hydropeaking can result in serious disturbances to the hydrologic regime, river morphology and the ecological condition of a river. In this study a transient, fuzzy logic based two-dimensional fish habitat model was used to investigate the stranding risk to juvenile European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) corresponding to different river morphologies. The stranding risk was simulated using two 24 hour discharge hydrographs in two alpine gravel bed river reaches. Both reaches were in close proximity to the hydropower plant outlet and were chosen due to their starkly contrasting morphological features. Spatially distributed stranding risk was determined based on a multi-step procedure which took into account the stationary habitat suitability, critical dewatering rates and flow depths. Although the number of reaches used in the investigation was limited in scope, clear distinctions with respect to the stranding risk were found. The reach with wider,flatter cross sections had a larger amount of stranding risk areas as compared to the reach with a steeply incised channel form. Stranding risk was found to be related to a specific set of changes in the discharge than to a particular rate of change or magnitude of the flow fluctuations. The temporal distribution of stranding risk was found to be almost identical for both reaches.

          US and Chinese Strategic Trade Policies and Product Differentiation in the ASEAN Apple Market

          We investigate oligopolistic competition between US and Chinese apple exporters in the ASEAN market using strategic trade theory and the NEIO literature. We also analyze competition in the US and Chinese domestic markets. The US supplies higher quality apples to ASEAN than China, resulting in product differentiation. The results show that US exporters had a higher markup than Chinese exporters through the 1990s; however, as the share of Chinese apples expanded, the US markup declined and the Chinese markup increased dramatically. Competitive pricing prevails both in the US and Chinese domestic markets.

          Kre-Celazine® as a Viable Treatment for Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis/Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis — A Pilot Study

          The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether an oral, non-prescription, nutritional supplement compound composed of a proprietary alkali-buffered creatine monohydrate and cetylated fatty acids mixture (Kre-Celazine ) was efficacious in reducing or eliminating refractory pain and inflammation, without untoward effects, in Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis ( JRA), which is also called Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis ( JIA). JRA/JIA is a patho-physiologically complex, chronic childhood autoimmune inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. Numerous studies have unsuccessfully attempted to pinpoint a possible common initiation event. Officially considered an affliction of children below the age of 16 years, an initial diagnosis has been confirmed in infants less than 1 year old, to individuals older then 17 years. In this study, sixteen juveniles, ages 7 through 16 years, experiencing long-standing, unremitting pain and inflammation despite previous use of prescription anti-inflammatory drugs and NSAIDs, were enrolled in a 30-day, open-label clinical study and treated with Kre-Celazine. Efficacy of this nutritional supplement was determined by the juvenile’s personal physician and based on observations of the following: (1) significant reduction or elimination of palpable signs of inflammation; (2) renormalization of range of motion; (3) reduction or absence of perceived pain as reported to the physician by the patient; (4) renormalization of C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) values. In addition, the individual’s previous steroid or non-steroidal anti-inflamatory medication(s) were reduced or eliminated in a stepwise progressive fashion during the study.

          Creativity in Education: Contemporary Meanings

          This paper discusses the concept of creativity in contemporary education contexts. Global capitalism and neoliberalism have had significant effects on the meaning and practices of creativity in education, not all of them are negative despite the philistinism inherent in the marketisation of learning: creative resistances to neoliberal ideology occur with increasing frequency. The paper considers these matters in the context of a comparative research project into creative pedagogies of beginning teachers in Palestine and England. The historical and political contexts of both situations has a strong bearing on the meanings and practices of creativity, and may be instructive for our understanding the wider transformations of the concept in contemporary state education.

          GALLIUM NITRIDE NANOWIRES ENHANCED HIGH-EFFICIENCY COLD CATHODE FLUORESCENT LAMP

          We demonstrated a cold cathode fluorescent lamp that contains gallium nitride (GaN) nanowires at the electrode surfaces in a gas discharge light source to enhance the power efficiency of this luminance system. GaN in the nanowire structure has a high geometric aspect ratio, which makes it an ideal plasma ignition enhancer. The nanostructure enhancer not only improves a lower ignition voltage but also eliminates the use of mercury in the conventional cold cathode fluorescent lamp system. Due to high temperature of plasma, the GaN nanowires are partially dissociated to release the Ga ions into the lamp. Because the Ga ion has a large capture cross-section of electrons, it helps the lamp electrodes to maintain a high electric resistance. This could enhance the power efficiency and prevent the sputtering effect on the electrode to improve the lifetime of the lamp. This mercury-free approach also makes such cold cathode fluorescent lamp as an environment-friendly device.

          Fabrication of Resistive Random Access Memory by Atomic Force Microscope Local Anodic Oxidation

          The fabrication of gallium, zinc and nickel oxide nanodots for application of resistive random access memory (RRAM) was demonstrated using the atomic force microscopy (AFM) local anodic oxidation technique. Thin metal ¯lms were deposited on indium tin oxide conductive glass substrates. In the atmospheric environment, using AFM equipped with an Ag-coated probe can generate metal oxide nanodots locally on the metal films. These nanodots act as an insulator layer in a single unit cell of the RRAM. The voltage-biased method allows devices to reset from a lowresistance state (LRS) to a high-resistance state (HRS) at 0.9 V. These results show the ability of the AFM local anodic oxidation to produce 50 nm NiO nanodots on glass substrates for potentially high-density RRAMs. As we developed the characteristics of the structure, we found that a lateral NiO nanobelt RRAM performs very low power operation from such experimental manufacturing process. Using a current-biased method, the lateral device switches from a HRS to a LRS with a low writing voltage of 0.64 V.

          Contemporary Art and Education: A Critical Alliance

          Art, and contemporary art in particular, has played a complex and paradoxical role in education. On the one hand it can offer unique modes of expression that provide learners with the means to explain and understand their identity and their life-worlds; on the other hand, art can confound and disrupt ordinary education practices, not lending itself easily to assessment or curricula routines, and furnishing learners with a critical voice that may be unwelcome within mechanistic educational processes. Using some examples drawn from primary school pupils’ conspicuously contemporary artworks, I argue that the presence and viability of these critical and idiosyncratic art practices in schools may be an indicator of the health of an education system as a whole.
