Investigating Directives in Korean: Advice and Suggestion

        Jee-Won Hahn 국제언어인문학회 2010 인문언어 Vol.12 No.2

Investigating Directives in Korean: Advice and Suggestion Jee-Won Hahn (Kyung-Hee University) Even though it is based on a small number of responses, this study provides some interesting findings and implications for two directive speech acts. Advice and suggestion are examined from three aspects: conceptual, situational, and linguistic. These speech acts are shown to present similarities and differences as well. From a conceptual aspect, a set of semantic features are identified to distinguish advice and suggestion. The situational dimension offers the insight into the speech act theory (Searle and Venderveken 1985) to understand the condition for determining directive speech acts. Finally, linguistic realizations present various strategies employed for performing an act. Compared to advice, due to weakening illocutionary force, suggestion tends to be simplified in types of linguistic strategies. In addition, this study argues that a sentence-based approach needs to be complemented by a variety of pragmatic devices when it comes to the English-learning environment.

      • A Case Study on the Fire of Factory Buildings in Korea

Jee,Nam-Yong,Lee,Kyung-Ku,Suh,Chee-Ho 한국화재소방학회 1997 한국화재소방학회 학술대회 논문집 Vol.1997 No.-

According to the fire statistics of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the fire ratio in factories, work places and warehouses shows 21.5% among total fire of buildings except the fire on cars or other fires. Especially, the buildings like factories and warehouses, which have a lot of ignitable sources and thus always have a strong possibility of fire, are needed to have well planned strategy in terms of life safety and property protection. In this respect, the present paper analyses the existing fire cases in factories, finds out the fire properties of factory buildings, and evaluates the codes concerning fire resistance and fire severity.

The diagnosis of coronoid impingement using computed tomography

        Baik, Jee-Seon,Huh, Kyung-Hoe,Park, Kwan-Soo,Park, Moo-Soon,Heo, Min-Suk,Lee, Sam-Sun,,Choi, Soon-Chul 대한구강악안면방사선학회 2005 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.35 No.4

Coronoid impingement can cause limitation of mouth opening. In many cases, it appears to be related to the coronoid hyperplasia. We present a case of mouth opening limitation caused by coronoid impingement on the posterior surface of the zygomatic bone without coronoid hyperplasia. The bony changes in coronoid and zygoma including surface irregularity and discontinuity of the cortex and sclerotic change of inner medullary space were noted on computed tomography (CT) scans in different level of axial planes. Through another CT scans in open mouth position could demonstrate that those bony changes were caused by the contact of both surfaces against each other. In case coronoid impingement is suspected of the many possible causes, the open mouth CT scans will be needed to reveal the direct impingement of coronoid on zygoma even without coronoid hyperplasia.

한국어 학습자의 의사소통 특징 연구 : 의사소통이 잘 이루어지지 않은 경우를 중심으로

        이지영 국제한국어교육학회 2002 한국어 교육 Vol.13 No.2

Jee-Young Lee. 2002. An Study of Communication within Korean Language Learners' Conversation. Journal of Korean Language Education 13-2: 227∼246. The Korean language research and education have emphasized the improvement of communicative competence of Korean language learners in these days. So many researchers are interested in communication theory. How Korean language users make and interpret the conversation? How Korean language users use the communication constraints in their conversation? What is the difference between Korean language users and learners using the communication constraints? It will be meaningful to examine how Korean language learners recognize the communication constraints of Korea. There are many communication constraints that the ways we open and close conversations, our conversational turn-taking signals, how we repair messages to make them interpretable, how bracketing is done, and so forth. Also how we change the topics, what are Grice's maxims of Cooperation Principle. These constraints smooth social interaction and interact with the system constraints. For example, Korean language users use many kinds of politeness expressions when they open and close the conversation according to the relation between speaker and hearer. For this purpose, I will analyze the communication within Korean language learners' conversation and explain the causes of the error. The result of this analysis can be used as an effective teaching method for Korean language learners. (Seoul National University)

In order to investigate annumor and immune response effect by Hyangsapyungwisan after Sarcoma- 180 cells and methotrexate were treared each other. the extract of Hyangsapyungwisan was orally administered to ICR mice for 14 days. To evaluate the effects of the Hyangsapyungwisan, 50% inhibition concentration(IC_50), mean survival days, tumor weight for antitumor effects, hemagglutinin titer, hemolysin titer, rosette forming cells, natural killer cell and productivity of interleukin-2 for immune responses measured in ICR mice. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Mean survival time in Hyangsapyungwisan-treated group was slightly prolonged, as compared with control group(13.46%). 2. On the MTT assay, cell viability was significantly inhibited by 5ug/well, 2.5ug/well, l.25ug/well. and 0.625ug/well of Hyangsapyung-wism concentration inhibited cell viability significantly. IC_5o for cell viability was 11.59ug/well. 3. Tumor weight in Hyangsapyungwisan treated group was depressed, as compared with the control group(P<0.05). 4. Hemagglutinin titer in Hyangsapyungwisan-treated group was slightly increased with no significance, as compared with the control group. 5. Hemolysin titer in Hyangsapyungwisan-treated group was silightly increased, as compared with the control group(P<0.05). 6. Rosette forming cells in Hyangsapyungwisan-treated group was silightly increased, as compared with the control group(P<0.05). 7. Naural killer cell activity in Hyangsapyungwisan-treated group was significantly increased(P<0.05). 8. Production of interleukin-2 was significantly increased(P<0.05). According to the above results, Hyangsapygwisan had prominent antitumor, and enhance both cellular and humoral immunity in mice.

Gesture, Gaze, and Bodily Cues in Mandarin Conversation: Two Case Studies

        Lee,Jee-won 한국사회언어학회 2012 사회언어학 Vol.20 No.1

Lee, Jee-won. 2012. Gesture, Gaze, and Bodily Cues in Mandarin Conversation: Two Case Studies. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 20(1). pp. 213-234. This study uses discourse analysis to illustrate some ways that non-verbal actions such as gaze, facial expression, and gesture work to contextualize the speech delivered in conversation. These bodily cues also enable participants to organize interactions as collaborative creations of meaning rather than simply a turn-by-turn exchange of speech. This study uses two excerpts from Mandarin Chinese conversations to illustrate how non-verbal cues help speakers and recipients to engage in collaborative action with one another. Speakers give recipients information about their stances vis-à-vis the speech they produce, and recipients use this information to manage their reactions to the speech they hear. Non-verbal actions also allow both parties to mutually regulate the flow of conversation. In both examples, it becomes clear that gaze, facial expression, and gesture are important elements of spoken interaction and that conversation as a whole should be understood as a contextual web of meaning that includes speech, body language, and overall social interaction.
