Damage behavior of quasi-isotropic circular composite plates of Herculus AS4/3501-6 graphite/epoxy were investigated and the residual compressive strength after impact under low-velocity impact type loads was evaluated. The locations and lengths of damages inside the plate after the impact were calculated by means of a three-dimensional finite element method and compared with the impact test results. Also, the load-deflection curves for impact were used to predict the major damage characteristics of the impact force in the laminated composites.

The crack closure phenomenon is important in the aspect of effecitve driving force for crack growth. Therefore, the precise measurement of crack closure load is an essential prerequisite for the determination of the effective driving force. In this study, the acoustic emission(AE) technique was employed as one of crack closure measurement methods and the results were compared with those of crack opening displacement method(CD), back face strain gage method(BFS) and surface strain gage method. Results have shown that the intrinsic fatigue Life curve(da/dN vs. ΔK_(eff)) obtained by use of the AE technique vvas best fit with the curve of high stress ratio (R=0.8) test, which implied that the AE technique could be considered as a reliable crack closure measurement method.

A maize transposable family, Ac/Ds, has been successfully utilized as a mutagenizing agent not only in monocot but also in dicot. In order to develop insertional mutagenesis system in pepper, the mobility of Ac/Ds has been examined. In this study, the excision of the elements was monitored via transient assay system with protoplasts. Two different systems were developed and compared; one- and two-elements systems. In a one-element system, Ac alone was introduced into cells. As a two-element system, Ac and Ds were cloned into a single vector and were expressed in protoplasts. Our data showed that both Ac and Ds elements were highly mobile in pepper cells. This is the first report suggesting that Ac/Ds mediated gene tagging system could be successfully operated in pepper.

제주산 양식넙치 ( Paralichthys olivaceus ) 로부터 분리된 β - 용혈성 연쇄구균 ( β - Streptococcus spp. ) 의 특성

2000년도 2회에 걸쳐 제주도 일원 넙치 양식장을 대상으로 감염어에서 분리된 연쇄구균에 대한 특성시험 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 감염어로부터 분리된 연쇄구균은 형태적으로 연쇄상의 gram 양성의 구균이었고, catalase와 oxidase에 음성이었으며, 용혈성 시험에서는 β-용혈성을 나타내었다. 감염어에서 각 장기별 생균수에서는 환부, 신장, 혈액 그리고 뇌순으로 연쇄구균이 검출되었다. 약제 감수성에서는 ampicillin, ciprofloxicin 등에 감수성이 있었지만 erythromycin 등에는 감수성이 없었다. 복강에 주사하여 병원성 시험을 한 결과 10일 이내에 전량 폐사하는 강한 병원성을 보였다. 감염균의 용혈성에 대한 특성은 50℃, 30분의 배양에서 용혈활성이 빠르게 증가되어 최대값에 도달되었고 또한 pH 5.5∼6.5에서 높은 활성값을 보였다. Streptococcus spp. of bacterial pathogen of fish were isolated from the cultured flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) in fish farm of Jeju Island. Clinical signs of the infected flounder which are the most commons symptoms are as follows: erratic swimming, darkening of the body colour, unilateral or bilateral exophthalmia, corneal opacity, hemorrhages in the opercular and the bases of the fins, and the ulceration of the body surface. Biochemical characteristics of pathogenic fish Streptococcus spp. were gram positive, spherical form, catalase negative, oxidase negative and β-haemolytic, respectively. The viable cells counted from the tissue of the diseased flounder were the largest in the order of the ulcer, the kidney, the blood and the brain. The drugs used were ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, gentamycin, tetracycline, erythromycin, streptomycin and oxytetracycline. Streptococcus spp. were found to be sensitive to ampiallin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline and gentamycin, but were resistant to tetracycline, erythromycin, streptomycin and oxytetracycline. The pathogenicity of Streptococcus spp. on the cultured flounder with an abdominal cavity injection was high. The haemolytic activity of the toxin against the sheep red blood cells reached the maximum after 30 min incubation at 37℃ or 50℃. The toxin showed highest activity at pH 5.5∼6.5.

<P>Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs), metal oxide nanoparticles were used in multiple applications including wood preservation, antimicrobial textiles, catalysts for carbon monoxide oxidation and heat transfer fluid in machines. We investigated the effects of CuONPs on the respiratory system in Balb/c mice. In addition, to investigate the effects of CuONPs on asthma development, we used a murine model of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthma. CuONPs markedly increased airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR), inflammatory cell counts, proinflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species (ROS). CuONPs induced airway inflammation and mucus secretion with increases in phosphorylation of the MAPKs (Erk, JNK and p38). In the OVA-induced asthma model, CuONPs aggravated the increased AHR, inflammatory cell count, proinflammatory cytokines, ROS and immunoglobulin E induced by OVA exposure. In addition, CuONPs markedly increased inflammatory cell infiltration into the lung and mucus secretions, and MAPK phosphorylation was elevated compared to OVA-induced asthmatic mice. Taken together, CuONPs exhibited toxicity on the respiratory system, which was associated with the MAPK phosphorylation. In addition, CuONPs exposure aggravated the development of asthma. We conclude that CuONPs exposure has a potential toxicity in humans with respiratory disease.</P>
