The broad-specificity amino acid racemase (Bsar) from Pseudomonas putida catalyzes the racemization of various amino acids, offering a flexible and feasible platform to develop a new non-antibiotic selectable marker system for plant transformation. In the present study, we demonstrated that a Bsar variant, Bsar-R174K, that is useful as a selectable marker gene in Arabidopsis and rice that were susceptible to l-lysine and D-alanine. The introduction of wild-type Bsar, Bsar-R174K or Bsar-R174A into E. coli lysine or asparagine auxotrophs was able to rescue the growth of these microorganisms in minimal media supplemented with selectable amino acid enantiomers. The transformation of Arabidopsis with Bsar or Bsar variants based on d-alanine selection revealed that Bsar-R174K had the greatest efficiency (2.40%), superior to kanamycin selectionbased transformation (1.10%). Whereas, l-lysine-based selection exhibited lower efficiency for Bsar-R174K (0.17%). The progenies of selected Bsar-R174K transgenic Arabidopsis revealed normal growth properties. In addition, Bsar-R174K transgenic rice was obtained on l-lysine medium with an efficiency of 0.9%, and the progenies of the transgenic rice revealed morphologically normal phenotypes comparable with their wild-type counterparts. This study presents the first report of broad range amino acid racemase Bsar-R174K as a non-antibiotic selectable marker system applied in transgenic plants.

In this study, the coating process is employed on metal wire to help improve the friction resistant property ofcarbon fibers, thereby provides more application feasibility. The yarn coating technique for reinforcement and woven fabricprocess are used to produce carbon/stainless steel/polyester/polypropylene/acrylic (CSPPA) woven fabrics that arecharacterized with softness and a light weight. The constituent coated yarns exhibit good conductivity after being coated witha PP layer, and likewise strengthen the woven fabrics in terms of mechanical behavior of tensile strength, elongation, bendingtorsion, creep resistance, and wear-resistant properties. The test results indicate that in the woven process, samples retaingood morphology. Due to PP sheath, the tensile strength of woven fabrics increases from 23 MPa to 42 MPa. Although thelamination layer numbers does not improve the EMI SE of woven fabrics, the EMI SE still reaches over 40 dB. Themanufacturing design proposed in this study provides an innovative finishing for carbon fibers without affecting the intrinsicproperties, and provides a greater range of application for carbon fibers.
Frequency splittings in deformed optical microdisk cavities
Yi, Chang-Hwan,Kullig, Julius,Kim, Chil-Min,Wiersig, Jan American Physical Society 2017 Physical Review A Vol.96 No.2
<P>We study the frequency splitting of nearly degenerate optical modes in weakly deformed microdisks. The analysis is restricted to even-and odd-parity modes in cavities with a mirror-reflection symmetry. The frequency splitting is explained in a semiclassical approach by dynamical tunneling (resonance-assisted tunneling) between clockwise-and counterclockwise-propagating waves. We derive semiclassical predictions for the frequency splittings which are in good agreement with full numerical calculations. Two deformations are studied in detail, the ellipse and the quadrupole, representing a deformation with integrable and nonintegrable ray dynamics. Furthermore, the differences between Dirichlet and dielectric boundary conditions are discussed.</P>

<P>The production of multifunctional pure organic materials that combine different sizes of pores and a large number of electron spins is highly desirable due to their potential applications as polarizers for dynamic nuclear polarization-nuclear magnetic resonance and as catalysts and magnetic separation media. Here, we report a polychlorotriphenylmethyl radical-linked covalent triazine framework (PTMR-CTF). Two different sizes of micropores were established by N2 sorption and the presence of unpaired electrons (carbon radicals) by electron spin resonance and superconducting quantum interference device-vibrating sample magnetometer analyses. Magnetization measurements demonstrate that this material exhibits spin-half paramagnetism with a spin concentration of ∼2.63 × 1023 spins/mol. We also determined the microscopic origin of the magnetic moments in PTMR-CTF by investigating its spin density and electronic structure using density functional theory calculations.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Yuanfeng Duan,Yi-Qing Ni,Hongmei Zhang,Billie. F., Jr. Spencer,Jan-Ming Ko,Yi Fang 국제구조공학회 2019 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.23 No.6
Using magnetorheological (MR) dampers in multiswitch open-loop control mode has been shown to be cost-effective for cable vibration mitigation. In this paper, a method for analyzing the damping performance of taut cables incorporating MR dampers in open-loop control mode is developed considering the effects of damping coefficient, damper stiffness, damper mass, and stiffness of the damper support. Making use of a three-element model of MR dampers and complex modal analysis, both numerical and asymptotic solutions are obtained. An analytical expression is obtained from the asymptotic solution to evaluate the equivalent damping ratio of the cable-damper system in the open-loop control mode. The individual and combined effects of the damping coefficient, damper stiffness, damper mass and stiffness of damper support on vibration control effectiveness are investigated in detail. The main thrust of the present study is to derive a general formula explicitly relating the normalized system damping ratio and the normalized damper parameters in consideration of all concerned effects, which can be easily used for the design of MR dampers to achieve optimal open-loop vibration control of taut cables.
Design formulas for vibration control of sagged cables using passive MR dampers
Yuanfeng Duan,Yi-Qing Ni,Hongmei Zhang,Billie F. Jr. Spencer,Jan-Ming Ko,Shenghao Dong 국제구조공학회 2019 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.23 No.6
In this paper, a method for analyzing the damping performance of stay cables incorporating magnetorheological (MR) dampers in the passive control mode is developed taking into account the cable sag and inclination, the damper coefficient, stiffness and mass, and the stiffness of damper support. Both numerical and asymptotic solutions are obtained from complex modal analysis. With the asymptotic solution, analytical formulas that evaluate the equivalent damping ratio of the sagged cable-damper system in consideration of all the above parameters are derived. The main thrust of the present study is to develop an general design formula and a universal curve for the optimal design of MR dampers for adjustable passive control of sagged cables. Two sag-affecting coefficients are derived to reflect the effects of cable sag on the maximum attainable damping ratio and the optimal damper coefficient. For the cable configurations commonly used in cable-stayed bridges, the sag-affecting coefficients are directly expressed in terms of the sag-extensibility parameter to facilitate the control design. A case study on adjustable passive vibration control of the longest cable (536 m) on Stonecutters Bridge is carried out to demonstrate the influence of the sag for the damper design, and to figure out the necessity of adjustability of damper coefficients for achieving maximum damping ratio for different vibration modes.
