Purpose: This study intends to explore the knowledge distribution in immigrant entrepreneurship in a host country Malaysia. In Malaysia, most immigrants are workers who later started their own businesses. They have a higher tendency to engage in entrepreneurial activities thus knowledge distribution from previous employment is necessary. Research design, data and methodology: This qualitative study using in-depth interview approach was carried out with five immigrant entrepreneurs from Bangladesh conducting business in Malaysia. The data were gathered and analysed using thematic analysis facilitated by ATLAS.ti software. Results: The findings provide useful insights on the significance of knowledge obtained during immigrant entrepreneurs’ former employment in the host country, enabling them to identify the needed resources quickly to launch a successful business in a host country. Conclusions: This study contributes to the Knowledge Spillover Theory of Entrepreneurship specifically in the context of immigrant entrepreneurship who have former employment in the same business sector and a proposition is developed. For practicality, the findings provide some insights for immigrants who want to start businesses in the host country which allow them to identify and exploit entrepreneurial opportunities due to knowledge distribution at their former employment in the host country later facilitates successful business establishment there.
Self-Tuning Fuzzy-Based Dispatching Strategy for Elevator Group Control Systems
Jafferi Jamaludin,Nasrudin Abdul Rahim,Hew Wooi Ping 제어로봇시스템학회 2008 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2008 No.10
Fuzzy logic is recognized as an intelligent approach to complex problems demanding fulfillment of several criteria. A smart solution for an elevator group control system is one complex problem. This paper discusses a fuzzy logic dispatching strategy for elevator group control that uses a self-tuning fuzzy logic controller to tune membership functions and adjust fuzzy rule sets. Computer simulation evaluates, in three traffic peaks, the strategy’ effectiveness. The results, when compared with other strategies that use conventional controllers, show considerable overall improvements in both waiting time and riding time.

In this study, rice straw and bagasse are used as raw materials to produce binderless particleboard (BPB). This study aims to evaluate the mechanical and physical properties of BPB. We identify the raw material that would be better for the production of BPB from the viewpoint of their basic properties. The BPBs are made from rice straw, bagasse, and combinations of both in ratios of 50:50 and 40:60, respectively. The modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), internal bonding (IB) strength, water absorption, and thickness swelling properties of the different BPBs are determined and compared. Results showed that all the properties are significantly influenced by the type of particles or particle combinations in the BPB. BPBs made from bagasse alone have the highest MOR, MOE, and IB mean values, whereas BPBs made from rice straw alone exhibit the lowest MOR, MOE, and IB values. Meanwhile, BPBs made from a combination of rice straw and bagasse at 40:60 ratio by weight have the second highest values for properties such as MOR, MOE, and IB, followed by BPBs made from a combination of rice straw and bagasse at 50:50 ratio by weight.
Combined Effects of Sex Hormones and Dietary Oils on Lipid Peroxidation

The effects of orchildectomy with/without testosterone replacement in male rats, and ovarectomy with estrogen replacement in female rats on lipid peroxidation were studied in male and female rats fed with diets fortified with 20% w/w soybean oil or palm oil for 4 months. Serum, liver and heart homogenates were assayed for malonaldehyde and conjugated dime levels. Orchidectomy was found to reduce levels of lipid peroxidation products in the serum, liver and heart. Testosterone replacement did not increase the Lipid peroxidation products to levels in the nonorchildectomised rats, while estrogen did not influence lipid peroxidation significantly. Palm oil decreased, but soybean oil increased lipid peroxidation in the liver and heart of both the castrated and sex hormone-replaced male and female rats.

Sliding mode control is known for its robustness against plant uncertainties and disturbance rejection. An extension of this technique is the addition of super twisting algorithm that suppresses the chattering effectcommonly observed with sliding mode control application. This paper elaborates on the design and analysis ofthe super twisting algorithm with focus on optimizing the gain parameters. Two main components of the slidingmode super twisting controller were designed and validated; that is, the switching function and the control laws. The traditional sliding surface was used as the switching function while control laws with continuous control actionwere applied. Two gain parameters of the control laws were designed and analyzed in terms of tracking errorreduction and chattering effect. A Kalman-Bucy continuous filter was applied for velocity signal estimation. FastFourier Transform was applied on the control inputs to investigate the chattering amplitude and root mean squareof the tracking error was used as performance indicator for tracking error reduction. Analyses were performedon the effect of gains variation to control performance. Experimental results showed that gain L was sensitive tochattering amplitude while gain W provided wider range of tuning. The control performance was compared tothe traditional pseudo-sliding mode controller in terms of tracking error reduction and chattering effect. Resultsshowed that the super twisting algorithm produced superior results in tracking error reduction and was effective insuppressing chattering effect compared to the pseudo-sliding mode controller.

Current steel tubes inspection techniques are invasive, and the interpretation and evaluation of inspection results are manually done byskilled personnel. This paper presents a statistical analysis of high frequency stress wave signals captured from a newly developed noninvasive,non-destructive tube inspection technique known as the vibration impact acoustic emission (VIAE) technique. Acoustic emission(AE) signals have been introduced into the ASTM A179 seamless steel tubes using an impact hammer, and the AE wave propagationwas captured using an AE sensor. Specifically, a healthy steel tube as the reference tube and four steel tubes with through-hole artificialdefect at different locations were used in this study. The AE features extracted from the captured signals are rise time, peak amplitude, duration and count. The VIAE technique also analysed the AE signals using statistical features such as root mean square (r.m.s.), energy, and crest factor. It was evident that duration, count, r.m.s., energy and crest factor could be used to automatically identify the presence ofdefect in carbon steel tubes using AE signals captured using the non-invasive VIAE technique.
Optimization of Super Twisting Sliding Mode Control Gains using Taguchi Method
Chiew Tsung Heng,Zamberi Jamaludin,Ahmad Yusairi Bani Hashim,Nur Aidawaty Rafan,Lokman Abdullah 대한산업공학회 2018 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.17 No.1
This paper focuses on optimization of super twisting controller gains using Taguchi method with objective to minimize tracking error and the chattering effect. Two gain parameters in super twisting algorithm, that is L and W were identified as two factors with three levels respectively. The optimization method applied a L9 orthogonal array and the performance index used was root mean square of tracking error and Fast Fourier Transform of control inputs. The optimized super twisting controller with traditional sliding surface and the continuous control action laws was validated on a single axis direct driven linear motor. Analyses of variance and main effect plots were performed on the effect of gains variation on performance index. Values of L and W were chosen as 0.00002 and 0.08 respectively and were confirmed through confirmation test based on calculated confidence interval. Experimental results with 95% confidence level identified gain L as the significant factor in minimizing chattering effect while both gains L and W were responsible in minimizing tracking error in optimum condition. Optimized algorithm achieved 9.3% of reduction in root mean square of tracking error and 38.4% of reduction in chattering experimentally.
