Effects of Fly Ash Application to Soil on Growth of Sorghum

To investigate the utilization of fly ash in agriculture, sorghum [Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench] was used as the test crop. Soil was treated in pot experiments with anthracite and bituminous fly ash at 5 levels of 0, 6, 12, 18, and 24%, respectively. Growth status in terms of plant height and the number of nodes was improved in the order of bituminous treatment > anthracite treatment > control. The increment of fly ash had a positive effects on plant growth in both anthracite and bituminous treatment. The ratio of the senescent leaves to the all leaves during the maturing period was higher in fly ash treatments than in the control. As increasing the fly ash treatment, the ratio of senescent leaves was increased. Total yield was higher in the order of bituminous treatment > anthracite treatment > control. Grain yield also was higher in fly ash treatment than in the control. Bituminous fly ash treatments were more favourable in grain yield than anthracite. The increment of up to 12% fly ash to soil increased grain yield in both anthracite and bituminous. Application of bituminous fly ash could be recommended due to the fact that high pH of soil is favorable for growth of sorghum.
석탄회(石炭灰)의 시용(施用)이 콩의 생육(生育)에 미치는 영향(影響)

석탄회(石炭灰) 과량시용(過量施用)은 콩의 발아(發芽) 및 초기생육(初期生育)에 해로운 영향(影響)을 주었으며 특히 유연탄회(有煙炭灰) 10MT/10a 이상(以上) 시용(施用)한 경우는 잎에 뚜렷한 독증(毒症)을 나타냈고 생육후반기(生育後半期)까지도 콩의 생장(生長)에 해로운 효과를 주었다. 그러나 초기생육 단계(段階)에서의 해작용(害作用)은 생육이 진전(進展)되면서 점차로 감소(減少)되어 없어지고 오히려 생육을 증진(增進)시키는 효과를 나타내어 무연탄회(無煙炭灰)의 경우 시용(施用) 수준(水準)을 15MT/10a까지 증가(增加)시킬수록 초장 및 건물중(乾物重)이 증가되었다. 그러나 유연탄회(有煙炭灰)의 경우 10MT/10a 이하(以下) 수준(水準)에서는 무연탄회(無煙炭灰)의 경우와 마찬가지로 생육후반기(生育後半期)로 갈수록 해(害)작용이 없어지며 콩의 생육(生育)에 양호한 영향을 주었지만, 10MT/10a이상(以上) 시용(施用)했을 경우는 생육후기(生育後期)에도 잎에 붉은 반점이 생기며 말라 버리는 증상(症狀)이 발현(發現)되었다. 석탄회(石炭灰)의 시용(施用)은 토양 pH를 증가(增加)시키는 경향(傾向)을 보였으며 무연탄회(無煙炭灰)보다는 유연탄회(有煙炭灰)에서 그 효과가 더 현저(顯著)하였다. 석탄회(石炭灰)의 시용(施用)에 의한 토양 pH 교정효과는 토양중 유효인산(有效燐酸)의 함량을 증대(增大)시켰으며 이는 콩의 생장(生長) 및 수량(收量)을 증대 시키는데 기여(寄與)한 것으로 생각된다. 종합적(綜合的)으로 고찰(考察)해 볼 때 석탄회(石炭灰)의 사용은 토양(土壤)의 물이화학성(物理化學性)을 개선(改善)시켜 콩의 생육(生育)을 증진(增進)시키는 것으로 나타났으며 콩의 생장촉진(生長促進)을 위한 석탄회(石炭灰)의 적정(適正) 시용수준(施用水準)은 무연탄회(無煙炭灰)의 경우 5MT-10MT/10a, 유연탄회(有煙炭灰)의 경우는 5MT/10a 정도(程度)가 바람직할 것으로 생각된다.

The Study was conducted to develope the low temperature tolerant methane-producing bacteria(LTTB) and to increase the efficiency of anaerobic fermentation for the treatment of agricultural and livestock wastes at low temperature. The samples were collected from muddy soil, water logged sediment, organic layer and anaerobic sludge at three latitudes, 34.8~37.4 ˚N(Korea), 41.4 ˚N(USA) and 54.5~56.9 ˚N(Canada). They were used for determination of the methanogenesis rates for isolation and identification of the LTTB. The methanogenesis rate of smaples at low temperature were higher in the cellulose medium than methanol medium. The methanogeneses rate in the samples of subarctic region were 15~19 moles/ml during 30 days at low temperature(8 ℃), whereas not detected in the samples of temperate region. The methanogenesis rate in the enrichment culture of subarctic samples were inhibited by the 40 ㎍/ml of streptomycin + vancomycin or ampicillin + oleandomycin which were not effect to the methanogens. An inhabitation of high temperature tolerant methane producing bacteria was identified in the samples of temperate region, whereas that of the LTTB growing at 8~13℃ was identified in the subarctic region.

This study was conducted to investigate the biochemical properties of isolated bacteria, low temperature tolerant methanogens which were selected for use as inoculum for anaerobic fermentation of agricultural and livestock wasted at low temperature. The results, obtained were summarized as follows: Low temperature tolerant methanogens were isolated from the samples which showed the high methanogenesis rate by enrichment culture at low temperature in methanol medium. These methanogens, Methanobacterium M-251 and Methanobacterium M-253 were isolated from swampy sediment at latitude 56.9°, Methanosarcina mazei M-372 from lake sediment IV at latitude 55.0。N, and Methanobacterium formicicum M-375 from tidal land soil at latitude 37.0。N, respectively. The isolated anaerobic bacteria could not use sugars as carbon sources. The optimum pH value for the growth of M-251 and M-375 was 6.8, but those for M-253 and M-372 6.5 and 7.0, respectively. The minimum growth temperature of isolated, M-251 and M-253 were 8℃ and the optimum temperature 30℃, while the minimum of M-392 and M-395 were 13℃ and the optimum 37℃. The growth rate of isolates at 17.5℃ were lower by 32-50% than that of 30℃. The isolated Methanobacterium strains such as M-251, M-253, and M-375 have lower cell yield, 0.38-1.21g/1M CH₄than 1.14-1.51g/1M CH₄of Methanosarcina mazei M-372.

Evaluation method of soil fertility by application of geographic information system (GIS) which includes landscape characteristics and soil map data was investigated from productivities of red pepper and tobacco grown on the fields with no fertilization. Total 131 fields experiments, 64 fields of red pepper and 67 fields of tobacco were conducted from 22 and 23 fields for red pepper and tobacco, respectively, located at Cheangweon and Eumseong counties in 1996, from 20 and 25 fields at Boeun and Goesan counties in 1997, and 22 and 19 fields at Jincheon and Chungju counties in 1998. All the experimental sites were selected on the basis of wide range of distribution in landscape and soil attributes. Dry weights and nutrients (N, P and K) uptakes by red pepper plant and tobacco leaves were considered as basic fertility of the soil (BFS). The BFS was estimated by twenty-five independent variables including 13 chemical properties and 12 GIS data. Twenty-five independent variables were classified by two groups, 15 quantitative variables and 10 qualitative variables, and were analyzed by multiple linear regression (MLR) of REG and GLM models of SAS. Dry weight of red pepper (DWRP) and dry weight of tobacco leaves (DWTL) every year showed high variations by five times in difference plots with minimum yield and maximum yield indicating the diverse soil fertility among the experimental fields. Evaluation for the BFS by the MLR including independent variables was better than that by simple regression showing gradual improvement by adding chemical properties, quantitative variables, and qualitative variables of the GIS. However the evaluation for the BFS by the MLR showed the better result for tobacco than red pepper. For example the variability in the DWTL by MLR was explained 34.2% by only chemical properties, 35.0% by adding quantitative variables, and 72.5% by adding both the quantitative and qualitative variables of the GIS compared with 21.7% by simple regression with $NO_3-N$ content in soil. Consequently, it is assumed that this approach by the MLR including both the quantitative and qualitative variables was available as an evaluation model of soil fertility for upland field.
