Scrambling of Adjunct and Last Resort

Vol.7 No.2

Cho, Jai-Hyoung and Kim, Ock-Hwan. 1999. Scrambling of Adjunct and Last Resort. Linguistics 7-$ 39-59. This paper deals with long-distance scrambling of adjuncts in Korean and Japanese with respect to the Last Resort principle. It is claimed that long-distance scrambled arguments are base-generated in the surface non-θ IP-adjoined position and that they must be obligatorily lowered into their θ-position at LF to check their θ-role feature, which is regarded as a movement-driving formal feature. Long-distance scrambled adjuncts are also argued to be base-generated in the IP-adjoined position. Unlike their argument counterparts, they are licensed there since adjuncts do not have any Case or θ-requirement. Thus, they must not be lowered into the embedded clause which they modify, otherwise the Last Resort principle would be violated. (Ajou University)

Vol.20 No.-

A Study on the Process of the Transition and Development of Chang-geuk (the traditional Korean opera) Lee, Jai-seong Chang-geuk (the traditional Korean opera) has its origin in Pansori. But it is defined as the different style of prerforming art with Pansori, because it is presented according to the playbook and actors play their roles depending on the characters in text. Chang-geuk was strongly influenced by theatrical forms of foreign nations from its beginning in the early 1900s. Until now it is under the influence of Western theatrical principles. While not establishing its own style as an performing art native to Korea on that ground, Chang-geuk still has repeated the various experiments on performing style for the completion of Korean unique musical performances. This study investigated the process of the transition and development of Chang-geuk from its beginning up to now, and analyzed the stylistic characteristics of Chang-geuk according to each development step by step. At first the early performance style of Chang-geuk changed Pansori to the form of devided song depending on characters, after that Chang-geuk set the type of three-dimensional performance to adapt to indoor stage as rudimentary form of theatrical arts. Second in the 1930s, the Research Society of Choson Song completed the modern performance style of Chang-geuk, made major advances of Chang-geuk through conducting cultural exchanges with people who took active parts in Korean new drama. At third in the 1950s, Yeoseong Guggeuk (the traditional Korean female opera) flourished as public art, and this study analyzed its success factors and characteristics. Finally this research has organized the activities of the National Changgeuk Company of Korea for modernization of Chang-geuk`s performing style into five key phases. Chang-geuk was born under the influence of discourse for the new culture in Korean modern society. Through upheaval of modern and contemporary history, it grew as a kind of traditional art that represents Korean performing arts, while also it is the most brilliant legacy of Korean culture. Therefore Chang-geuk is to be recognized as performing art, which has developed and modernized Korean traditional performing arts continuously. Through this recognition, we must set the correct direction of development for the future Chang-geuk. The ultimate goal of this study is to contribute smaller to the academic development for Chang-geuk, in order that it can establish itself more firmly as a global musical theatre such as Western opera, Beijing opera of China and Kabuki of Japan.

Null Epithet in Tough-Movement and Relative Clauses

Vol.7 No.1

Cho, Jai-Hyoung. 1999. Null Epithet in Tough-Movement and Relative Clauses. Linguistics, 7-1, 33-50. This paper examines relative clauses and tough-movement clauses in Korean with regard to Weak Crossover (WCO) phenomena and demonstrates that the lack of WCO effects in Korean relative clauses and PP tough-movement clauses is due to a trace created by null operator movement, namely, a null epithet. It shows that the relative clauses in Korean involve null operator movement, which, as non-operator A'-movement, creates not a variable but a null epithet, and that the absence of WCO effects is ascribed to the null epithet, which is free from the WCO constraint. It demonstrates that Strong Crossover effects are yielded in relative clauses in Korean since the null epithet, being an R-expression, is subject to Binding Principle C. It further maintains that PP tough-movement clauses in Korean involve null operator movement; therefore, they do not show the WCO effect since they contain the null epithet created by null operator movement. Scrambling and Object Agreement Projections

Vol.9 No.3

Cho, Jai-Hyoung.2001. Scrambling and Object Agreement Projections. Linguitics 9.3, 135-151. The purpose of this paper is to investigate reconstruction effects and binding phenomena exhibited by scrambling and their implications for Case checking of direct objects and indirect objects in Korean. Based on reconstruction effects and the copy theory of movement, we show that direct objects are scrambled through SPEC of AGRoP to the sentence initial position. By examining Condition C effects and Condition A effects in the ca of scrambling of Annals, on the o e hand, and indirect objects, on the other, we demonstrate that direct objects in situ in Korean do not raise to SPEC of AGRoP for Case-checking at LF. We also propose that in Korean, indirect objects in situ, as well as direct objects in situ, do not raise to the ACT, projection for Case-checking in LF. (Ajon University)

        Scrambling across Contrastive Phrase

Vol.8 No.1

Cho, Jai-Hyoung. 2000. Scrambling across Contrastive Phrase. Linguistics 8-1, 317-332. This paper deals with scrambling across a contrastive phrase with regard to WCO and anaphor binding. I show that based on the observation of reconstruction and subjacency effects, the contrastive phrase behaves more like a scrambled phrase than like a topic phrase (cf. Hoji (1985)). I claim that while scrambling across the topic phrase, as operator movement, leaves behind a variable and yields WCO effects, scrambling across the contrastive phrase, as non-operator A'-movement, creates a null epithet and thus does not yield WCO effects. I also propose that the phrase which was scrambled across the contrastive phrase can be in the IP-adjoined position, i.e. a non-operator A'-position, and thus can serve as an antecedent of the anaphor which it moved over.

Vol.- No.45

The purpose of this study was to suggest why literature discussion was important in literary education. It presented two novels by Park Wan-seo as topics to college students and observed how they engaged in literary discussions. The investigator tried to figure out the followings through observation and analysis: What do the students discuss? What are the patterns and characteristics of their discussions? What are their grounds? What kind of relation is there between discussion and writing? The observation and analysis of their literary discussions led to the following results: first, literary discussions made a contribution to increasing the students` understanding of and interest in literature; and secondly, literary discussions were also helpful for improving their abilities in other areas of Korean language. Based on those findings, the study identified the values and effects of literary discussions and proposed the matters they should pay attention to in literary discussion classes.

        Scrambling across PP-Topic

Vol.6 No.2

Cho, Jai-Hyoung. 1998. Scrambling across PP-Topic. Linguistics, 6-2, 1-21. This paper examines NP-topic and PP-topic constructions and shows that PP-topicalization is differentiated from NP-topicalization. It is noted that an NP-topic in Korean is base-generated in the Spec position of TopP, which is located higher than CP, whereas PP-topicalization is derived by movement, i.e., a PP-topic is preposed to the sentence-initial position, and the PP-topic phrase receives only the contrastive interpretation. It is demonstrated that in contrast to scrambling across an NP-topic, scrambling across a PP-topic, as non-operator A'-movement, does not exhibit the WCO effect since it creates a null epithet, which is immune to the WCO Constraint. Finally, it is maintained that unlike scrambling across an NP-topic, scrambling across a PP-topic creates a new anaphor binding relation since it can be an IP-adjunction operation. (Ajou University)

Vol.27-28 No.-

This article is a reply to Mr. chang Ilse's paper, “A Study of Author Notation in Korea, especially with Mr. Lee Jai Chul's Argument in Mind.” Mr. Chang has challenged my theory by questioning the purpose of the book number and claiming that book number and class numbers do not have any relationahip whatsoever to each other, that vy introduction of an analytico-synthetic system into the structure of the author table is a mistake, and that my adoption of syllabic notation as a first author notation is 31% slower than his system. According to him, the duplication rate of my method, generally speaking, is a letter or two longer than that of his. My reply to Mr Chang's claims is exactly opposite to his reasoning, and it should be given to him in two installments This first portion of the series included: “My Argument over the Purpose and Character of the Book Number,” “A Study of Syllabic Alpha-numerical Notation and the Expansibility of Alpha-numerical Notation.” The investigator attempts to propound that as book notation is after all only a part of classification and is nothing but terminal subdivision, the principles of classification criteria for notation may well be applied to it. In the final judgement of a notation method, I propose that not only such requirements as simplicity, brevity and expansibility, which Mr. Chang strongly advocates, but also other requirements such as mnemonics, that is semantic weight, should be taken into consideration. In view of this, each sign of my method bears meaning in itself, and, besides, it meets all the requirements, while Mr. Chang's method unfortunately can not satisfy them.

Vol.30 No.2

Advances in computer and sensor technology have made it possible to obtain superlarge manufacturing process data in real time, letting us extract meaningful information from these superlarge data sets. We propose a systematic data analysis procedure which field engineers can apply easily to manufacture quality products. The procedure consists of data cleaning and data analysis stages. Data cleaning stage is to construct a database suitable for statistical analysis from the original superlarge manufacturing process data. In the data analysis stage, we suggest a graphical easy-to-implement approach to extract practical information from the cleaned database. This study will help manufacturing companies to achieve six sigma quality.
