The object of this study was to determine rate of ability restoration after arthroscopic surgeries in Thoroughbred racehorses. The racehorses that under arthroscopic surgery due to be injured his limbs were studied during exercise or training at Busan Race Park from 2005 to 2010. Rate of arthroscopic surgical treatments was 1.4% (63/4642). The results of arthroscopic surgery for the removal of osteochondral fragments from 70 limbs in 63 horses are reported. Number of patients under arthroscopic surgery were 63 and 58 horses were recovered from the surgeries and 5 horses were in training or resting at the time of publication. Only 52 of 58 horses had previous race experiences before the surgeries. Success horses of returned to the same level of performance were 31 horses (59.6%) and failed horses were 21 horses (40.4%). Average resting periods in success and failed horses were 7 months and 8.8 months, respectively. Resting periods in success horses were shorter than failed horses.
This study was conducted on 85 non-racing pleasure horses raised in Susan race park of Korea Racing Authority to investigate the prevalence of stereotypic behavioral problems in horses. the observation had been continued from March to October of 2010, and the study animals included warm-bloods, Jeju ponies and donkeys. Although there was no temperament problem detected, a wide range of well-known stable vices were observed in 15 horses. The most frequently observed stereotype was cribbing (8.2%), and it was followed by weaving (1.2%), biting (1.2%), eating too fast (1.2%), pawing (1.2%) and scraping the teeth on something (1.2%) with the equal prevalence rate. These behavioral disorders were only detected in warm-bloods, while those were absent in Jeju ponies and donkeys. In addition, primary behavioral disorders were more dominant than mimicking behaviors.
Coital exanthema of Thoroughbred horses had occurred firstly in Republic of Korea. This study was performed to evaluate clinical features of coital exanthema, and provide veterinary knowledge to equine practitioner as well as horse farms. The method was clinical, clinical pathology and sexual hormone, electron microscope and libido examination. Five stallions of 27, 45 broodmares of 416 showed clinical symptoms but 124 foals and a teaser did not show any abnormal appearance. Five stallion had papule, pustule, crust around a glans, body of penis, prepuce and remain decolorized spot after treatment. One laceration of glans and 3 gait disorder had been observed but it did not affect libido. Forty-five broodmares localized had papule, pustule, crust, and ulceration around perineal region, vulva, mucocutaneous junction remain decolorized spot after treatment.
Next to performing an expert physical examination, a blood sample submitted for a complete blood count is the most basic tool available to owners or veterinary practitioners. Reference values of complete blood count were determined at 6 different ages in 114 Thoroughbred foals during the second month of life. Hematologic results were as follows: RBC 8.2-10.5 (106/μl), Hb 10.9-13.3 (g/dl), HCT 28.2-35.2 (%), MCV 30.7-35.8 (fL), MCH 11.9-13.5 (pg), MCHC 37.9-40.5 (g/dl), RDW 24.5-25.7 (%), PLT 146.3-256.4 (103/μl), MPV 6.7-8.3(fL), total WBC 8.1-12.5 (10³/μl), basophils 0.0 (10³/μl), eosinophils 0.0-0.3 (10³/μl), neutrophils 2.4-8.6 (10³/μl), lymphocytes 1.8-2.9 (10³/μl) and monocytes 0.0-1.4 (10³/μl). The results of this study serve as reference ranges for Thoroughbred neonatal foals populations and can be useful for health control, regular examination and pre-sale soundness examination.
Equine herpesvirus type 3 (EHV-3)는 말[馬]에서 말구진을 유발하고 말산업에 치명적인 악영향을 끼치는 매우 중요한 병원체이다. 국내에서 처음으로 말구진이 발생하였고, 말 생산농가에 경제적 피해를 입혔으나 다행히 원인바이러스 분리에 성공하였다. 이에 원인바이러스의 생물학적 특징을 연구하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. EHV-3를 RK-13 cell에 접종한 결과 접종 48 시간부터 세포변성효과가 나타남을 확인하였고 접종 72 시간부터는 세포박리가 일어났다. 세포를 수확하여 바이러스 DNA를 추출한 후 PCR 검사를 수행하였다. 그 결과 EHV-3에만 양성이었고 EHV-1 및 EHV-4에는 음성이었다. Swab에서 바이러스 DNA를 추출하여 10배씩 serial dilution을 한 후 PCR 검사를 실시한 결과 10⁴까지 밴드를 확인할 수 있었다. 국내분리 EHV-3의 gG 특정부위에 대한 염기에서 표준주인 EHV-3 334/74 strain과 397개가 일치하여 99.25%의 상동성을 나타내었고 국내분리주를 EHV-3 거로주(Georo strain)라 명명하였다. 전기영동 결과에서는 EHV-3가 EHV-1보다 적은 수의 밴드를 확인할 수 있었다. 국내 분리주 EHV-3 거로주의 단백질을 분석한 결과 145 kD, 60 kD, 45 kD, 40 kD에서 단백 밴드를 관찰하였다. Equine coital exanthema caused by equine herpesvirus type 3 (EHV-3) is a venereal disease which seriously drops horse reproduction rates. Here, we isolated EHV-3 from infected horses and investigated their biological characteristics. Initial cytopathic effects such as rounding of cells were detected 48 hours post infection of the virus into RK-13 cells. The infected cells were going to detach from the surface of culture flasks 72 hours post infection. The type of isolated viruses from swabbed samples was EHV-3 by PCR analysis. Glycoprotein G (gG) of isolated EHV-3 has a 99.25 percent similarity rate to that of EHV-3 334/74 control strain. The isolated EHV-3 was named Georo strain. Georo strain consisted of four major proteins including 145 kD, 60 kD, 45 kD and 40 kD, as shown by SDS-PAGE analysis. We hope the newly isolated Georo strain of EHV-3 can be used for studying various aspects of Korean equine coital exanthema.
Macrocyclic lactone에 저항이 있는 Parascaris equorum은 몇몇 국가에서 보고되었다. 그랜트얼룩말(Equus burchelli bohmi)이 만성체중감소 및 심한 침울로 인하여 제주경마공원동물병원에 내원하였다. 임상검사에서 빈맥 및 탈수가 밝혀졌고 다음날 심한 복통을 앓고 난 후 폐사하였다. 내원하기 전에 얼룩말은 3개월 간격으로 3회에 걸쳐 ivermectin을 경구로 투여 받았고 첫 침울증상 30일 전에도 ivermectin으로 투여 받았다. 부검에서 위와 소장에 회충축적 및 장천공을 확인하였다. 저자들의 지식으로는 성숙한 얼룩말에서 ascarid impaction 및 장천공 예가 매우 드물다. 본 증례의 원인은 P. equorum이 ivermectin에 저항성이 있을 수 도 있다고 의심하고 있다. Macrocyclic lactone resistance has been reported in populations of Parascaris equorum from several countries. A Grant's zebra (Equus burchelli bohmi) was admitted to the Equine Hospital at Jeju Race Park with signs of chronic weight loss and severe depression. Clinical examination revealed tachycardia and dehydration. Over the course of a day, the zebra suffered from severe abdominal pain and subsequently died. Prior to admission, the zebra had received prophylactic anthelmintic treatment with ivermectin 3 times at 3-month intervals and was dewormed with ivermectin 30 days prior to the onset of depression. At necropsy, there were masses of ascarids in the stomach and small intestine, and intestinal perforation. There are many reports of ivermectin-resistant P. equorum in horses. However, anthelmintic resistance has not been formally demonstrated in zebras. This report describes diagnosed case of gastrointestinal impaction and intestinal perforation by P. equorum in an adult zebra. We suspect that ivermectin-resistant P. equorum larvae were the cause.
다리기형(ALD)은 다리가 정중선에서 벗어나 측면으로 회전변형 된 것을 의미하고 망아지에 흔한 선천적 결손이다. 30일령의 Thoroughbred 망아지가 한국마사회 제주목장 동물병원으로 내원하였다. 방사선 검사에서 양 앞다리가 각각 외측으로 변형되었고 오른앞다리가 왼앞다리보다 심하게 회전된 것을 확인하여 단일나사고정술과 골막박리술을 이용하여 교정수술을 하였다. 40일 후 나사를 제거하였고 술부의 섬유화 및 과잉교정 등 합병증이 없이 바르게 교정되었다. 이 결과로 국내 신생망아지에 isoflurane을 이용한 흡입마취에서 단일나사고정술과 골막박리술은 안전하고 효과적인 수술임을 확인하였다. Angular limb deformities (ALD) are common in foals. A 30-days-old Thoroughbred foal was presented for the evaluation of severe ALD of the both forelimbs. On radiographic examination, both distal radiuses were diagnosed as valgus angular limb deformities. But the degree of deviation of right forelimb was so severe that we tried to correct one after the other. We tried new surgical correction method combination of one screw implant on medial aspect for growth retardation and periosteal transection on lateral aspect of the right forelimb. 40 days later, successfully corrected and then removed the screw. After the right forelimb correction, the periosteal transection on left forelimb was performed. We did the inhalation anesthesia using isoflurane. There were no complications such as fibrosis over the screw heads, and overcorrection that produces an opposing deformity identified. These results suggest that combination of one screw implant and periosteal transection technique is able to be a safe and effective method to correct severe ALD in the foal.
