A 3-year-old female Thoroughbred racehorse was presented following the accidental oral and skin administration of amitraz. This case report describes the clinical signs and the treatment of this horse. Clinical signs of amitraz toxicosis are associated with the stimulation of alpha2-adrenergic receptors. Amitraz is seldom fatal because the effects can be reversed by alpha2-adrenergic antagonists. The horse displayed typical clinical signs of colic, including pawing, small hard drops, tranquillisation, depression, ataxia, muscular incoordination and impaction colic lasting up to 7 days. The syndrome was accompanied by mild dehydration. The horse survived after persistent symptomatic treatment, including the giving of intravenous fluids, antibiotics, multiple doses of mineral oil per os, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and dexamethasone intramuscularly and intravenously.

The Period of Abortion Storm Caused by Equine Herpesviruses in Thoroughbred Breeding Farms in South Korea

Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) is an economically important pathogen of horses and exerts its major impact by inducing abortion storms and sporadic abortions in pregnant mares, early neonatal death in foals, and respiratory disease in young horses. Although equine herpesvirus type 4 (EHV-4) rarely causes clinical manifestations of disease in organs other than the respiratory track, isolated cases of myeloencephalopathy and sporadic abortions have been reported in EHV-4 infections. Here, we report an abortion storm in Thoroughbred breeding farms in Jeju island, South Korea. It occurred for 16 days from first abortion to last one. There were no clinical signs prior to abortion and stillbirth in broodmares. Two PCR-primers were made on glycoprotein B gene of EHV-1 and EHV-4 to amplify specific common regions of the viruses. We could detect the virus specific genes in aborted samples by PCR, and concluded that the cause of abortion storm was EHV infection. This report describes the first abortion storm case caused by EHV in Thoroughbred breeding farms in South Korea.

Mortality rate undergoing anesthesia in Thoroughbred racehorses at Busan Race Park

The report about equine anesthesias in Korea are very rare. This paper aimed at the mortality rate during anesthesia in Thoroughbred horses at Equine Hospital of Busan Race Park, KRA in South Korea from 2005 to 2010. Drugs used in anesthesia was IV injection of detomidine hydrochloride (0.01 mg/kg) or xylazine(0.5mg/kg) for sedation and premedication, Guaifenesin(50-100 mg/kg) for muscle relaxation, ketamine hydrochloride(2 mg/kg) for induction of anaesthesia and Inhalational isoflurane(1.3-1.5 %) to maintain anesthesia. Total number of anesthetic cases was 190, 150 of inhalational anesthesia and 40 of general anesthesia, repectively. The purpose of anesthesia was highest in the disorder of musculoskeletal system, followed by urogenital system and respiratory system Mortality case due to anesthesia was one during arthroscopic surgery for removal of osteochondral chip fragments. The time of anesthesia was 150 min, fatal sign was hypoxemia and the reason was improper machine operation of the anesthetist. In conclusion, the perianesthetic mortality rate during anesthesia in Thoroughbred horses at Busan Race Park was 0.52%(1 death per 190 anesthetics).

국내 발생 말구진의 역학적 평가

This study evaluated the epizootiological characteristics of equine coital exanthema (ECE) in South Korea. A PCR test was used to determine the equine herpesvirus 3 (EHV-3) release period, excretion by suckling foals, morbidity rate, effect on fertility, and onset of breeding partner after treatment. The morbidity rate of ECE based on clinical symptoms was 8.3% (2/24) for stallions and 10.8% (45/416) for mares, and 29 of 45 (64.4%) animals were positive on the PCR test. Ten (22%) broodmares had symptoms before breeding, while 26 (58%) had symptoms after breeding. Nine (20%) mares had uncertain coverage periods and occurrence times. Suckling foals had no clinical findings and EHV-3 was not detected in their nostrils, although it was detected on teasers. No lesions were observed in the clitoral fossa on broodmares, although EHV-3 was detected by PCR. The period of EHV-3 emission was 22~23, 18~19, 6, and 58 days in stallions, broodmares, teasers, and mares with a mixed E. coli-like infection, respectively. ECE had no negative effects on the breeding capability of stallions and no symptoms were observed in broodmares after recovering from ECE.

Thoroughbred 경주마의 관절경수술 후 경주복귀율 (2005~2010)

The racehorses that under arthroscopic surgery due to be injured his limbs were studied during exercise or training at Busan Race Park from 2005 to 2010. Rate of arthroscopic surgical treatments was 1.4% (63/4,642). Affected bones were radius, radial carpal bone, third carpal bone, proximal phalanx, third metacarpal bone, femur, tibia, proximal sesamoid bone and intermediate carpal bone. The lesions were fracture, chip fracture, slap fracture, osteochonrosis, and osteochondrotitis dissencans. Number of patients under arthroscopic surgery were 63. Success horses of returned to racetrack or tried to return to racetrack were 58, and 5 horses were in training or resting at the time of publication. Success horses of returned to their previous use in the patients were 49 horses (84.4%) and no returned to the racetrack were 9 horses (15.6%) in 58 horses.

Appaloosa 신생망아지의 방광파열 1례

A 3-day-old Appaloosa colt was examined because of acute onset of ataxia, left-sided head tilt, fever and heart murmur. The foal continued to nurse but became increasingly depressed and mild colic. On plain radiological examination, the foal was normal. Uroperitoneum was diagnosed following abdominocentesis. Postmortem examination revealed bladder rupture. The lesion was in the dorsomedial part of the bladder wall. We suggested that the cause of bladder rupture was parturient trauma. Even though the rupture was associated with trauma, the margin of rupture of bladder was clearly smooth and regular.

대학생용 자기계발 척도개발 및 타당화 연구

본 연구의 목적은 대학생의 자기계발 척도(Self-Improvement Scale: SIS)를 개발하고 타당도를 알아보고자 하였다. 연구대상은 경기도 D대학의 재학생 중에서 연구에 동의한 학생을 대상으로 진행하였다. 개별집중면담에 5명, 탐색적 요인분석에 226명, 확인적 요인분석에 1,067명, 타당도 검증에 261명의 대학생이 참가하였다. 대학생의 자기계발척도를 개발하기 위하여 선행연구를 통해 4요인 모델을 설정하고. 집중개별면접을 통해 1차 40문항을 설정하여 탐색적 요인분석을 통해 2차 24문항을 추출하였다. 최종적으로 전문가 검증과 확인적 요인분석을 통해 요인명을 정하고 4요인, 15문항을 개발하였다. 최종 확정된 4요인은 명칭을 각각 미래설계, 진로개발, 정서조절, 생활관리로 명명하였다. 자기계발 척도의 전체 문항 신뢰도는 .842이고, 각 하위요인은 .839, .831, .839, .726으로 나타났다. 이어서 비교척도와의 타당도 검증을 통해 자기계발척도(SIS)의 공인타당도를 확보하였다. 연구의 의의는 COVID19로 인해 일반적인 대학생활에 제약을 받고 있거나 진로와 직업에 관한 분명한 목표설정이 안되어 무계획적인 삶을 살고 있는 대학생에게 무엇에 중점을 두고 대학생활을 해야 하는 지의 지표를 제시 할 수 있다는 것이다. The purpose of this study was to develop a scale that measures self-improvement of college students(self-improvement scale [SIS]) and to assess evidence of validity and reliability of its scores. Four-phases of the study are presented detailing (a) individual intensive interviews (n = 5), (b) exploratory factor analysis (EFA; n = 226), (c) confirmatory factor analysis (CFA; n = 1,067), and (d) cross-validity test (n = 261). An initial pool of 40 items were developed through intensive individual interviews, followed by the preliminary EFA resulting in 24 items. The final CFA model yielded 15 items within four factors detailing (a) future design, (b) career development, (c) emotional control, and (d) life management, with the internal reliability of .842 for the SIS total score. Implication for the study is discussed.

국내분리 말구진 원인병원체(Equine herpesvirus type 3)의 특징

Equine herpesvirus type 3 (EHV-3)는 말[馬]에서 말구진을 유발하고 말산업에 치명적인 악영향을 끼치는 매우 중요한 병원체이다. 국내에서 처음으로 말구진이 발생하였고, 말 생산농가에 경제적 피해를 입혔으나 다행히 원인바이러스 분리에 성공하였다. 이에 원인바이러스의 생물학적 특징을 연구하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. EHV-3를 RK-13 cell에 접종한 결과 접종 48 시간부터 세포변성효과가 나타남을 확인하였고 접종 72 시간부터는 세포박리가 일어났다. 세포를 수확하여 바이러스 DNA를 추출한 후 PCR 검사를 수행하였다. 그 결과 EHV-3에만 양성이었고 EHV-1 및 EHV-4에는 음성이었다. Swab에서 바이러스 DNA를 추출하여 10배씩 serial dilution을 한 후 PCR 검사를 실시한 결과 10⁴까지 밴드를 확인할 수 있었다. 국내분리 EHV-3의 gG 특정부위에 대한 염기에서 표준주인 EHV-3 334/74 strain과 397개가 일치하여 99.25%의 상동성을 나타내었고 국내분리주를 EHV-3 거로주(Georo strain)라 명명하였다. 전기영동 결과에서는 EHV-3가 EHV-1보다 적은 수의 밴드를 확인할 수 있었다. 국내 분리주 EHV-3 거로주의 단백질을 분석한 결과 145 kD, 60 kD, 45 kD, 40 kD에서 단백 밴드를 관찰하였다. Equine coital exanthema caused by equine herpesvirus type 3 (EHV-3) is a venereal disease which seriously drops horse reproduction rates. Here, we isolated EHV-3 from infected horses and investigated their biological characteristics. Initial cytopathic effects such as rounding of cells were detected 48 hours post infection of the virus into RK-13 cells. The infected cells were going to detach from the surface of culture flasks 72 hours post infection. The type of isolated viruses from swabbed samples was EHV-3 by PCR analysis. Glycoprotein G (gG) of isolated EHV-3 has a 99.25 percent similarity rate to that of EHV-3 334/74 control strain. The isolated EHV-3 was named Georo strain. Georo strain consisted of four major proteins including 145 kD, 60 kD, 45 kD and 40 kD, as shown by SDS-PAGE analysis. We hope the newly isolated Georo strain of EHV-3 can be used for studying various aspects of Korean equine coital exanthema.

하이브리드 시대 미셸 드 세르토(Michel de Certeau)의 역사서술 다시 읽기(또는 다시 쓰기)

인공지능으로 대표되는 첨단 과학 기술의 시대는 수많은 ‘하이브리드’ 존재들을 생산하고 있다. 현대 사회의 문제들은 더 이상 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화, 과학 등의 어느 한 분야로 한정할 수 없는 하이브리드적인 존재들과 그것들의 연결로 이루어진다. 이러한 사실은 우리에게 새로운 인식론적 태도를 요구한다. 현대 사회가 직면한 문제들은 기존의 이분법적 인식태도로는 감당할 수 없음은 분명해 보이기 때문이다. 이 글은 서구의 이분법적 근대성의 균열을 확인한 ‘하이브리드’ 사상가로 잘 알려진 역사가 미셸 드 세르토(Michel De Certeau)가 전통적 역사학에게 던진 새로운 ‘하이브리드’ 사유를 확인하는 것을 목표로 한다. 세르토에게 역사는 현재의 역사가와 죽은 자가 만나는 장소이며, 산 자 또는 죽은 자 그 누구만의 고유영역도 아니며, 삶과 죽음의 혼종적 결합으로 만들어진 새로운 공간, 시간 그리고 의미이다. The advanced science technologies such as artificial intelligence are producing numerous ‘hybrid’ beings. Most problems facing contemporary society consist of hybrid beings and their interconnection network, which could not be limited to a specific field such as politics, economy, society, culture, science, etc. It requires us to have a new epistemological attitude, which means that the problems of contemporary society could not be handled by the conventional epistemological frameworks. This article aims to confirm the new ‘hybrid’ thinking being thrown at traditional historians by Michel De Certeau, a historian well known as ‘hybrid’ thinker who identify the cracks of dichotomous modernity of the West. For Certeau, history is a place where the present living historians meet the dead. Also it is neither a place for the living nor for the dead, but a new place, and time as well as meaning itself created by a hybrid combination of life and death.
