An expert system for making durable concrete for chemical exposure

Md. Nazrul Islam,Muhammad Fauzi Mohd. Zain,Hassan Basri 한국계산역학회 2005 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.2 No.4

The development and the main features of an expert system for modeling the requirements of durable concrete in chemical exposure, called the Durable Concrete Advisor for Chemical Exposure (DCACE), are described. The system was developed to help improve the quality of concrete exposed to chemical environment by minimizing mistakes and deficiencies in selecting concrete constituents. Using Kappa-PC expert system shell, an object-oriented model was developed where the rule-based reasoning operates on or across objects. The American Concrete Institute manual of concrete practice was chosen as the main source of knowledge. Other textual sources were also consulted for knowledge acquisition. The major objectives of the research were acquisition and formalization of the relevant knowledge and building an expert system for making durable concrete for chemical exposure regarding sulfate attack, acid attack, seawater attack and carbonation. Similar to most expert systems, this system has explanation facilities, can be incrementally expanded, and has an easy to understand knowledge base. The performance of the system is demonstrated by an example session. The system is user-friendly and can be used as an educational tool.

Silica Encapsulation of Sonochemically Synthesized Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

        Md. Nazrul Islam,Mohamed Abbas,Brajalal Sinha,정종율,김철기 대한금속·재료학회 2013 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.9 No.6

A facile sono-chemical approach was applied for the large scale synthesis of silica coated iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) using inexpensive and non-toxic chemicals. The as-prepared silica coated magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell) NPs have been characterized by XRD, TEM, EDS, and VSM. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and EDS analysis revealed that Fe3O4 NPs have been successfully coated by this simple method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data demonstrated that the thickness of silica coating on iron oxide magnetic NPs is 10 - 15 nm on average. The magnetization curve from the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM)measurement shows that the magnetization also decreased the as-synthesized silica coated iron oxide NPs compared to the freshly prepared bare iron oxide magnetic NPs, which is also evidence of the synthesis of Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell NPs.

Synthesis of monodisperse and high moment nickeleiron (NiFe) nanoparticles using modified polyol process

        Md. Nazrul Islam,Mohamed Abbas,CheolGi Kim 한국물리학회 2013 Current Applied Physics Vol.13 No.9

Monodisperse NiFe nanoparticles with different compositions have been successfully synthesized bysurfactant free simple modified polyol method. In the process, polyethylene glycol was used as a solventmedia and it has been found to play a key role to act as a reducing agent as well as a stabilizer simultaneously. XRD, TEM, and EDS analysis techniques were used to characterize the synthesized nanoparticles. TEM images displayed formation of a thin oxide layer around the nanoparticles, and confirmedby detection of some oxygen element using EDS measurement. The magnetic properties of the synthesizedNiFe NPs samples were measured by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) at room temperature, and the saturation magnetization value was found to be iron content dependent.

Thermal Annealing Synthesis of Fe4N/Fe Nanocomposites from Iron Oxide (Fe3O4) Nanoparticles

Md. Nazrul Islam,Mohamed Abbas,Kun Woo Kim,김철기 한국물리학회 2014 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.65 No.10

A facile sono-thermal approach using inexpensive and non-toxic chemicals was applied for thelarge-scale synthesis of iron nitride/iron (Fe4N/Fe) nanocomposite. The as-synthesized iron oxide(Fe3O4) nanoparticles by sonochemical method were treated in a thermal annealing chamber inpresence of hydrogen (H2) and ammonia (NH3) gases to obtain Fe4N/Fe nanocomposite. X-raydiffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses revealed that the Fe4N/Fenanocomposite had been successfully synthesized using this simple method. Transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM) data demonstrated that the sizes of the as-synthesized Fe4N/Fe nanocompositewere larger compared to the sizes for the initial Fe3O4 NPs. The magnetization curve obtainedusing vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurements showed that the magnetization hadbeen significantly increased in the synthesized Fe4N/Fe nanocomposite compared to that in thefreshly-prepared Fe3O4 magnetic NPs.

Political Islam in South Asia: A critical appraisal of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami

Islam Md Nazrul 한국외국어대학교 국제지역연구센터 2021 International Area Studies Review Vol.24 No.4

The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (BJI) is the largest Islamist Party in Bangladesh. It was founded in 1941 in British-India, by Maulana Mawdudi, a prominent South Asian Islamist leader. The BJI has undergone political vicissitudes during its eight-decade-long political history. The most notable political success of the Party was to have a couple of cabinet positions as a coalition partner in the Nationalist–Islamist Government between 2001 and 2006. Since the beginning of the 2010s, the Party has been in severe crisis: most of its national leaders were convicted of war crimes and put to death in the period 2011–2016. This article aims to examine the BJI’s growth and development and role in political Islam in Bangladesh. It also explores the challenges to, and responses of, the Party and their sociopolitical implications for the future of political Islam in Bangladesh. The methodology of the article is a critical analysis based on an exhaustive review of published secondary literature about the Party. The author argues that the BJI has generated a massive Islamic movement and made an enormous contribution to political Islam in Bangladesh. Yet it has failed to reform its almost-century-old organizational structure and modus operandi and effectively respond to the changed social and political contexts of Bangladesh, which has affected its organizational mobility and success.

The Effect of Financial Development, Tariff, and RTA on Exports: A Structural Gravity Analysis

Syed Nazrul Islam,Md. Shariful Islam,Md. Rayhanul Islam,Md. Ashraful Alam 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2024 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.39 No.1

This paper examines the effect of financial development (FD), tariffs, and RTA on bilateral exports in a structural gravity framework. Applying high-dimensional fixed effects in OLS and PPML estimation technique in a panel framework covering 169 countries over 2001-2017, this paper finds that FD of both exporters and importers are an important determinant for boosting exports. The EIA has the most trade creation effect than any other form of RTA. Importers' FD has a larger effect on bilateral exports for developed to developed and developed and developing country trade than that of the exporters. The trade between developing to developing countries is positively affected by both exporters' and importers' FD; and negatively to a larger extent by tariff measures. However, in the case of developing and developed country estimation, FD of the exporter country is significantly affecting bilateral trade. Tariffs significantly distort trade, largely between developing and developed countries.

Modeling on the spatial vulnerability of lightning disaster in Bangladesh using GIS and IDW techniques

        Biswas Rathindra Nath,Islam Md. Nazrul,Mia Md. Juel,Islam M. Nazrul 대한공간정보학회 2020 Spatial Information Research Vol.28 No.5

This paper tries to explore the spatial patterns of lightning disaster death susceptibility in Bangladesh. It is prior need to identify the factors of death due to lightning hazard, seasonal variability, and spatial risks to develop management strategies of this country. To reach the study goal, lightning fatalities data were collected from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Bangladesh. The geostatistical IDW model of GIS technology was applied to assess the spatial vulnerability of lightning disaster. The geospatial prediction maps produced from the study determines the spatial heterogeneity of lightning risk. Generated statistics demonstrates that the Surma Basin, northwest Brinda tract, and northern Tertiary hilly region of Bangladesh are more susceptible to lightning disaster during the time span 2015–2018. Analysis results also discloses numerous factors such as climatic variability, geomorphological diverseness and anthropogenic phenomena influencing lightning catastrophes. Moreover, this study suggests that government and non-government disaster management organizations can play vital role to take initiative in risk assess, policy creation review, awareness building and campaign, community-based early warning system, emergency management system and appropriate technology piloting as well as implementation. The rationale of this study will contribute to assess spatial lightning strikes, mitigate locational vulnerability and promote sustainable development plans for reducing lightning disaster risk. In the future, GIS-based communication model like this can applied to raise awareness and educating and engaging the public through public–private partnership of the lightning hot spot regions.

Islam, Mohammad Nazrul,Sultana, Shirin,Alam, Md. Jobaidul Korea Genome Organization 2020 Genomics & informatics Vol.18 No.3

The mitochondrial genome of a species is an essential resource for its effective conservation and phylogenetic studies. In this article, we present sequencing and characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of a threatened labeonine fish, Cirrhinus reba collected from Khulna region of Bangladesh. The complete mitochondrial genome was 16,597 bp in size, which formed a circular double-stranded DNA molecule containing a total of 37 mitochondrial genes (13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes) with two non-coding regions, an origin of light strand replication (OL) and a displacement loop (D-loop), similar structure with other fishes of Teleostei. The phylogenetic tree demonstrated its close relationship with labeonine fishes. The complete mitogenome of Cirrhinus reba (GenBank no. MN862482) showed 99.96% identity to another haplotype of Cirrhinus reba (AP013325), followed by 90.18% identity with Labeo bata (AP011198).
