        Adsorptive removal of congo red and methylene blue dyes from aqueous solutions by Rumex obtusifolius roots

        Rumex obtusifolius roots were utilized within the scope of zero waste. Sorption of methylene blue and congo red dyes from wastewater was carried out. First, surface properties were determined using inverse gas chromatography. By this method, it was found that the surface of Rumex obtusifolius roots was acidic (KD/KA=0.13). The point of zero charge value of Rumex obtusifolius roots was determined as 5.62. Based on these results and selectivity studies, suitable dyes were selected for sorption studies. Experimental design was used for the first time to determine the parametric effects and to improve the process for the highest methylene blue and congo red removal. Optimum conditions such as pH (2–12), concentration (10–50 mg/L), adsorbent amount (0.01 g/50 mL–0.30g/50 mL), and contact time (0–210 min) were determined for the adsorption process. The Langmuir-2 model provided the best correlation, and qm values for methylene blue and congo red dyes were determined as 500.00 mg/g and 128.21 mg/g at 298 K. From the kinetic studies, it was found that the sorption process for methylene blue and congo red dyes followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The effect of NaCl and CaCl2 salts on methylene blue and congo red sorption on Rumex obtusifolius roots was evaluated. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic for methylene blue dye (ΔHo=+19.33kJ/mol) and exothermic for congo red dye (ΔHo=−4.99kJ/mol). The process was found to be spontaneous for both dyes (ΔGo=−28.10 kJ/mol for methylene blue dye and ΔGo=−26.14kJ/mol for congo red dye at 298 K). All findings showed the potential of Rumex obtusifolius roots as a model adsorbent for the removal of various organic pollutants from wastewater.

        Thermotropic liquid crystalline 4-(Nonyloxy) benzoic acid: Phase transition temperatures, thermodynamic characterization, and separation of structural isomers

        The retention behavior of various organic probes on the 4-(Nonyloxy) benzoic acid liquid crystal, which is used as a stationary phase, was investigated using the inverse gas chromatography method at infinite dilution. The thermodynamic parameters including the Flory-Huggins parameter, equation-of-state interaction parameter, the mole fraction activity coefficient, the effective exchange energy parameter, and residual thermodynamic parameters were determined in the temperature range of 423.15-433.15 K by using the retention behavior of the probes on the liquid crystal. It was determined from the thermodynamic parameters that all probes were poor solvents for the liquid crystal. Besides, the results of the 4-(Nonyloxy) benzoic acid liquid crystal was compared with a liquid crystal in the literature, and the effect of the number of alkyl groups on the liquid crystals on the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter and isomer separation was evaluated.

        Synthesis and photoluminesence properties of NaCa4 (BO3)3:xEu2+, xCe3+ Co-doped with lanthanide

        A new borate compound NaCa4(BO3)3:xEu2+,xCe3+ co-doped with Eu2+ and, Ce3+ was prepared by combustion synthesismethod using rare-earth nitrates, urea, and boric acid as starting materials. The prepared sample was characterized throughX-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). The energydispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDX) confirmed the presence of the Na, Ca, B, O, Eu, and Ce. The photoluminescence (PL)excitation and emission spectra of the Eu2+, Ce3+co-doped NaCa4(BO3)3were also investigated using spectrometer at roomtemperature.The excitation spectrum consists of an intense band peaking at 352 nm. The emission spectrum shows a singleintensive band centered at 445 nm, which correspond to the 4f65d1 -4f7. For the excitation wavelength of 352 nm the emissionintensity increases intially with the increase of lanthanide concentration and reaches to the maximum at x = 0.05 nm.Thecritical distance of concentration quenching, the luminescence lifetime have also been investigated.

        Trap Distribution in TlInS2 Layered Crystals from Thermally Stimulated Current Measurements

        We have carried out thermally stimulated current (TSC) measurements with the current flowing along the layer on as-grown TlInS₂ layered single crystals in the low temperature range 10 -- 110 K with different heating rates of 0.1 -- 1.5 K/s. Experimental evidence was found for the presence of two shallow electron trapping centers with activation energies of 12 and 14 meV. Their capture cross sections have been determined as 2.2 × 10-²³ and 7.1 × 10-25 ㎠, respectively. It was concluded that retrapping in these centers is negligible, which was confirmed by the good agreement between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions of the model that assumed slow retrapping. An exponential distribution of electron traps was revealed from the analysis of the TSC data obtained at different light excitation temperatures. This experimental technique provided a value of 27 meV/decade for the trap distribution. The parameters of the monoclinic unit cell were determined by studying the X-ray powder diffraction.       • Breast, Cervix and Colorectal Cancer Knowledge among Nurses in Turkey

        Background: Cancer is one of the most common causes of death in Turkey. Nurses are essential providers of preventive care for patients, especially breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening as part of routine preventive practice. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge of these cancers among nurses in Karabuk State Hospital. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was performed from April 1 to July 30, 2013. The study sample consisted of 226 nurses working in Karabuk State Hospital. Results: Mean age of the nurses was $32.07{\pm}8.39$. 62.4% of nurses practiced breast self examination when they remembered it, while 39.8% of them did not take a Pap smear test since they did not think it was necessary. 64.2% of nurses would like to receive information about cancer and screening tests. Majority of them had given true answers to questions on breast, cervical and colorectal cancer. There were significant relationships between cancer knowledge scores and marital status, working experience, and level of education. Conclusions: Nurses possess adequate knowledge about breast cancer but they need more information on cancer risk estimation. Awareness may be raised in nurses by establishing continuing education programs regarding the risk factors, symptoms, protection methods, early diagnosis, and scanning of breast, cervix and colon cancers.

      • What Turkish Nurses Know and Do about Skin Cancer and Sun Protective Behavior

        Background: Skin cancer is a global health problem that can be prevented by protective behavior promoted by nurses. In Turkey, only few studies have examined current knowledge of nurses related to skin cancer and to reveal their attitudes towards sun exposure and current protective behavior. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed from March 11 to May 30, 2013 with a study sample of 310 nurses working in two state hospitals located in Karab$\ddot{u}$k and Safranbolu. Results: Mean age of the nurses was $30.3{\pm}6.89$ years and 96.1% of them had graduated with a Bachelor degree. The participants were predominantly female (n=284). Knowledge level about skin cancer was significantly higher for females compared to males. Conclusions: Nurses do not have sufficient knowledge about skin cancer and are not adequately protecting themselves from ultraviolet light, the primary risk factor for skin cancer. While they demonstrated a responsible attitude towards avoiding sunburn and the need for adequate sun protection, they do not fully appreciate the extent to which the sun can cause skin cancer and that they lack full understanding about the need to protect the skin from burning and to avoid long term sun exposure in Turkey.

        Impact of Nonosseous Findings on 18F-NaF PET/CT in a Patient with Ductal Breast Carcinoma

        18F-NaF was used as a bone-seeking PET tracer forskeletal imaging until the introduction of the widely available99mTc-labeled bone agents. However, there is renewed clinicalinterest in 18F-NaF since prior technical and logistic limitationsto its routine use are no longer present, and, as a consequence,it is likely that uptake unrelated to bone and nonosseousfindings will be encountered more frequently. As aresult of tumoral necrosis, soft tissue metastases may demonstrate18F-NaF avidity due to dystrophic calcification. On theother hand, all non-osseous findings, whether 18F-NaF avid ornot, may provide important diagnostic information that mayalter the course of the disease, including treatment options. Herein we present a patient with ductal carcinoma of thebreast in whom findings unrelated to the skeletal system in18F-NaF PET/CT altered the treatment strategy.

        Adaptation of the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale to Turkish: Validity and Reliability Study

        Background: The Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) scale is the most widely used scale for the assessment of IADL in the elderly population. The aim of this study was to adapt the Lawton IADL Scale in Turkish and to investigate the validity and the reliability of the scale in older adults. Methods: A total of 80 participants with a mean age of 71.6±5.8 years were included in the study. The independent living skills of the older adults were measured using Lawton IADL, Hodkinson Mental Test, Functional Independence Scale, Barthel Index, Katz Index, and visual analog scale. Lawton IADL was translated into Turkish, validated by professional reviewers, translated back into English, and then tested. Cronbach’s alpha was used to measure reliability in a group of 34 participants and test-retest was performed 1 week after the first test. Pearson correlation analysis was used to show the relationship between Lawton IADL and other scales and indexes. Results: Internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) value was 0.843 for the whole scale. The intraclass correlation coefficient value of the scale was 0.915. Conclusion: These results confirm that the Turkish version of the Lawton IADL scale has excellent reliability and validity.
