BACKGROUND: The urgency of feeding the world`s growing population while combating soil pollution, salinization and desertification requires suitable biotechnology not only to improve crop productivity but also to improve soil health through interactions of soil nutrient and soil microorganism. Interest in the utilization of microbial fertilizer has increased. A principle of nature farming is to produce abundant and healthy crops without using chemical fertilizer and pesticides, and without interrupting the natural ecosystem. Beneficial microorganisms may provide supplemental nutrients in the soil, promote crop growth, and enhance plant resistance against pathogenic microorganisms. We mixed beneficial microorganisms such as Bacillus sp. Han-5 with anti-fungal activities, Trichoderma harziaum, Trichoderma longibrachiatum with organic material degrading activity, Actinomycetes bovis with antibiotic production and Pseudomonas sp. with nitrogen fixation. This study was carried out to investigate the mixtures on the soil microflora and soil chemical properties and the effect on the growth of lettuce and cucumber under greenhouse conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS: The microbial mixtures were used with each of organic fertilizer, swine manure and organic+swine manure and compared in regard to changes in soil chemical properties, soil microflora properties and crop growth. At 50 days after the treatment of microorganism mixtures, the pH improved from 5.8 to 6.3, and the EC, NO3-Na and K decreased by 52.4%, 60.5% and 29.3%, respectively. The available P2O5 and SiO2 increased by 25.9% and 21.2%, respectively. Otherwise, the population density of fluorescent Pseudomonas sp. was accelerated and the growth of vegetables increased. Moreover, the population density of E. coli and Fusarium sp., decreased remarkably. The ratio of bacteria to fungi (B/F) and the ratio of Actinomycetes bovis to fungi (A/F) increased 2.3 (from 272.2 to 624.4) and 1.7 times (from 38.3 to 64), respectively. Furthermore, the growth and yield of cucumber and lettuce significantly increased by the treatment of microorganism mixtures. CONCLUSION(S): These results suggest that the treatment of microorganism mixtures improved the chemical properties and the microflora of soil and the crop growth. Therefore, it is concluded that the microorganism mixtures could be good alternative soil amendments to restore soil nutrients and soil microflora.

Tobacco smoking (TS) has been known as one of the most potent risk factors for airway inflammatory diseases. However, there has been a paucity of information regarding the immunologic alteration mediated by TS in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). To identify the effect of TS, we harvested human tissue samples (never smoker: n=41, current smoker: n=22, quitter: n=23) and analyzed the expression of epithelial-derived cytokines (EDCs) such as IL-25, IL-33, and thymic stromal lymphopoietin. The expressions of Th2 cytokines and total serum IgE showed a type-2 inflammatory alteration by TS. In addition, the epithelial marker E-cadherin and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-associated markers (N-cadherin, α-SMA, and vimentin) were evaluated. Histological analysis showed that EDC expressions were upregulated in the current smoker group and downregulated in the quitter group. These expression patterns were consistent with mRNA and protein expression levels. We also found that the local Th2 cytokine expression and IgE class switching, as well as serum IgE levels, were elevated in the current smoker group and showed normal levels in the quitter group. Furthermore, the expressions of E-cadherin decreased while those of N-cadherin, α-SMA, and vimentin increased in the current smoker group compared those in the never smoker group. Taken together, these results indicate that TS contributes to the deterioration of pathogenesis by releasing local EDCs and Th2 cytokines, resulting in EMT in patients with CRSwNP. We verified that alterations of immunological response by TS in sinonasal epithelium can play a vital role in leading to CRSwNP.

This study is aimed to predict the configuration and tension of a towing cable of a side-scan sonar which plays an important role in developing ocean resources. The governing equations of 3-D static equilibrium equations for a flexible cable are derived and solved using a finite difference method. The forces considered in this paper are effective weights, drag forces due to currents and ship moving, and the tension at both ends of the towing cable. The governing equations are non-linear, so an iteration method is appled to solve the equation. A case study is carried out for several different conditions. The result will be useful for prediction the location of a side-scan sonar and to design the towing system.

Background / Aim : Recently, nucleotide sequences from a novel virus, termed hepatitis G virus(HGV), were identified in serum from a patient with cryptogenic hepatitis and suggested as agent of non A-E hapatitis HGV has been isolated from patients with various liver disease but clinical implications of this new agent remain largely unresolved . In Korea, the etiology of substantial fraction of hepatitis has remined undefined rate of HGV. Methods : To determine the implication of HGV, medical records of 115 patients with various liver diseases were reviewed. Of 115 patients, 63 were male and 52 were female. Their mean age was 44 years(19-74) and their mean AST and ALT were 121.3±278.7 IU/L and 172.2±253.3 IU/L, infected with hepatitis B and/or C virus and 20(17.4%) had non-viral identifiable liver diseases. Results : 1.HGV RNA was detected in 15 (13.0%) patients of 115 patients. 2. Among the 15 HGV RNA positive cases, 7 were male and 8 were female. Their mean age was 48 years(19-72) and their mean AST and ALT were 71.9±45.2 IU/L and 97.4±66.8 IU/L, respectively. 3 . HGV RNA was detected in 8 (13.85) of 58 patients without obvious causes if their liver diseases and in 7(18.9%) of 37 patients infected with HBV and/or HCV. However, HGV RNA was not detected from 20 patients with non-viral liver diseases such as alcoholic liver diseases, autoimmune hepatitis, PBC, or fatty liver. 4. HGV RNA was detected in 5 (19.2%) of 26 patients with acute hepatitis in 6 (9.4%) of 64 patients with chronic hepatitis, in 1 (14.3%) of 7 patients with liver cirrhosis, and in 3 (27.3%) of 11 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. 5. There was no statistically significant difference in sex, age, history of transfusion, serum ALT level, etiologies and status of HGV infection is quite high among the patients who have no specific cause of acute or chronic liver diseases and HGV can be confected with HBV and/or HCV infection in Korea.

<P>Flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted considerable attention due to their excellent performance, low-cost, and great potential as an energy supplier for soft electronic devices. In particular, the design of charge transporting layers (CTLs) is crucial to the development of highly efficient and flexible PSCs. Herein, nanocrystalline Ti-based metal-organic framework (nTi-MOF) particles are synthesized to have <I>ca</I>. 6 nm in diameter. These are then well-dispersed in alcohol solvents in order to generate electron transporting layers (ETLs) in PSCs under ambient temperatures using a spin-coating process. The electronic structure of nTi-MOF ETL is found to be suitable for charge injection and transfer from the perovskite to the electrodes. The combination of a [6,6]-phenyl-C<SUB>61</SUB>-butyric acid (PCBM) into the nTi-MOF ETL provides for efficient electron transfer and also suppresses direct contact between the perovskite and the electrode. This results in impressive power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 18.94% and 17.43% for rigid and flexible devices, respectively. Moreover, outstanding mechanical stability is retained after 700 bending cycles at a bending radius (<I>r</I>) of 10 mm.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
