Molecular analysis of NlugCSP3 with behaviorally active ligands of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Hemiptera: Delphacidae)

        Irfan Waris Muhammad,Muhammad Kaleem Ullah Rana,Wang Man-Qun 한국응용곤충학회 2023 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.26 No.3

The insect olfactory system is sensitive to the complicated chemical environment. Insect’s chemosensory proteins (CSPs) supposedly act as transport of plant volatiles across the sensillar lymph and competitive fluorescent binding assay was commonly used to test the binding affinities with various plant volatiles. However, extensive research to determine the physiological role of CSPs is necessary and helpful through binding interaction of a protein with the plant volatiles. In this comparative study, we employed phylogenetic analysis, fluorescence spectra, quenching mode, and thermodynamic force to characterize Nilaparvata lugens CSP3 (NlugCSP3). The phylogenetic tree revealed that amino acid sequence of NlugCSP3 showed extremely close similarities with Laodelphax striatella (LstrCSP10 & LstrCSP11) and Sogatella furcifera (SurCSP3). The Stern-Volmer (SV) curve of NlugCSP3 fluorescence quenching indicated that nonadecane and 2-tridecanone clearly quenched NlugCSP3 fluorescence as a stable static quenching mode. Meanwhile, α-terpinene and farnesene collided with NlugCSP3, instead of forming stable complexes. The thermodynamic analysis of NlugCSP3 revealed that spontaneous binding interaction occurred in nonadecane and 2-tridecanone and is driven primarily by hydrophobic in teractions. This study not only provides the information about the binding interaction of protein with the vol atiles, but also improves the efficient recognition of behaviorally elicited volatiles that could be used in the management of brown planthopper.

One-stage Hip Reconstruction for Developmental Hip Dysplasia in Children over 8 Years of Age

        Irfan Qadir,Saeed Ahmad,Atiq uz Zaman,Chirag Muhammad Khan,Shahzad Ahmad,Amer Aziz 대한고관절학회 2018 Hip and Pelvis Vol.30 No.4

Purpose: This study was performed to assess the clinical and radiological outcomes following one-stage hip reconstruction, consisting of open reduction femoral shortening and pelvic osteotomy, for neglected developmental dislocation of the hip (DDH). Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of 77 hips in 65 patients (46 females and 19 males; 12 had bilateral dislocations), operated at a Ghurki Trust Teaching Hospital in Pakistan between 2013 and 2015. The average age at surgery was 11.02±3.43 years. According to the Tönnis classification, there were 10, 14, 22, and 31 patients in grades 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. The pelvic procedure utilized in this study was triple osteotomy (47 hips) followed by double and Salter osteotomy (18 and 12 hips, respectively). Postoperative evaluations were conducted using the modified MacKay’s scoring system (functional outcomes) and Severin’s scoring method (radiological assessment). Results: Postoperatively, there were 38 (49.4%), 19 (24.7%), 14 (18.2%), and 6 (7.8%) hips in Severin grade I, II, III and IV, respectively. According to the modified McKay criteria, there were 22 hips (28.6%) in excellent condition, 44 (57.1%) in good condition, 9 (11.7%) in fair condition and 2 (2.6%) in poor condition. Both patients with poor outcomes had an unstable, painful hip with evidence of avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Conclusion: Based on the results presented here, we recommend the single stage procedure of open reduction, femoral shortening and pelvic osteotomy for treatment of DDH in older children with good to excellent functional and radiological outcomes.

        Irfan Qadir,Bahar Shah,Muhammad Waqas,Umair Ahmad,Shahzad Javed,Amer Aziz 대한슬관절학회 2019 대한슬관절학회지 Vol.31 No.1

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in component alignment between first and second knees in simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty (SBTKA) and unilateral TKA (UTKA).Materials and Methods: 274 SBTKAs and 198 UTKAs were included in study. Patients were divided into three groups as SBTKA on the right knee (group A), SBTKA on the left knee (group B) and UTKA (group C). Femoral and tibial component alignment was checked in both coronal plane (alpha [α] and beta [β] angles) and sagittal plane (gamma [γ] and delta [δ] angles) radiographs. Results: There were no statistically significant differences among groups in the preoperative anatomical varus angle and Kellgren–Lawrence gonarthrosis classification grade (p=0.139 and p=0.329, respectively). In the coronal plane, the alignment of femoral component (α angle) and tibial component (β angle) was similar in all three groups (α angle, 95.01 vs. 95.14 vs. 94.9, p=0.945; β angle, 90.03 vs. 89.67 vs. 89.98, p=0.483). The sagittal plane alignment of femoral component (γ angle) and tibial component (δ angle) did not show significant differences (γ angle, 7.04 vs. 6.98 vs. 7.00, p=0.132; δ angle, 86.56 vs. 87.41 vs. 86.73, p=0.610).Conclusions: The angular alignment of components was similar between SBTKA and UTKA.

      • An Application of Educational Data Mining (EDM) Technique for Scholarship Prediction

Irfan Ajmal Khan,Jin Tak Choi 보안공학연구지원센터 2014 International Journal of Software Engineering and Vol.8 No.12

Mining data in educational filed is an important and useful task for anybody related to educational institute. The useful information mined from the data can help with performance, guidance, teaching, planning and etc. for staff, students and instructors. Different educational data mining researches has been carried out on student data which includes the student’s basic achievements and educational background, academic scores and the amount of credit hours, but the relations between these are limited. Therefore in this paper we have described a system using data mining technologies such as decision tree. We have analyzed ID3 and J48 (C4.5) algorithms for predicting the scholarship winning chances on student data by translating the decision tree into “IF-THEN” rules and implementing these rules for prediction in our system called scholarship calculator. We have mined student data to calculate the chances of winning scholarship depending on their semester grades, position/rank of student in class, achievements, maximum and minimum amount of taken and allowed credit hours and extra curriculum activities. We found that ID3 works better even though J48 is faster in classifying data and creates a smaller tree than ID3. Because of ID3’s bigger tree it has more rule, more rules means more crosschecking and deeper decision, that’s why the predicted result was more accurate than J48. We have also described how our scholarship calculator works to predict and calculate the chances of winning scholarship. Performance evaluation is done and the results are also compared with already existing datasets. The developed system could be very useful in predicting student’s chances of winning scholarship from the first semester. It can help students to pinpoint the weak areas, which can be perfected with proper guidance from instructors and staff for better chances of winning scholarship.

Spatial variations in COVID-19 risk perception and coping mechanism in Pakistan

        Irfan Ahmad Rana,Saad Saleem Bhatti,Junaid Ahmad,Atif Bilal Aslam,Ali Jamshed 대한공간정보학회 2023 Spatial Information Research Vol.31 No.3

The outbreak of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, which instigated governments to impose lockdowns across their countries. Amidst the lockdown in Pakistan, this study comprised measures of the COVID-19 risk perception, coping mechanism, and spatial variations. The data from 40 selected indicators was collected using an online questionnaire and grouped into domains (4 risk perception and 3 coping mechanisms domains). The results revealed the spatial variations and the levels of risk perception and coping mechanisms within the study area. Relative to each other, overall risk perception was highest in Northern Areas (Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir) and Islamabad, and lowest in Balochistan province. Very little spatial variation was observed in terms of coping mechanisms. Age, gender, and marital status influenced the risk perception associated with COVID-19. The findings suggest spatial variation in risk perception, implying the need for localized and modified COVID-19 risk communication and risk reduction strategies.

Irfan Deli,Humeyra Karadol 원광대학교 기초자연과학연구소 2024 ANNALS OF FUZZY MATHEMATICS AND INFORMATICS Vol.27 No.1

In trapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy multi numbers, an aggregation operator performs the task of aggregate the described information to generate a ranking of alternatives which are two critical tasks: a flexible and superior tool for the first task and an effective tool for the second task is aggregation operator. Therefore, in the study, we give new aggregation operators, based on Archimedean T-norm and T-conorm operations which is called Archimedean norms operator for aggregating trapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy multi-information. Then, we develop a multi criteria decision making method based on the given operators. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the method is demonstrated via a numerical example.

      • Media-based modulation aided uplink NOMA for massive machine-type communications

Irfan Azam,I Nyoman Apraz Ramatryana,Soo Young Shin 한국통신학회 2021 한국통신학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2021 No.6

This paper presents a novel media-based modulation (MBM) aided uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique for massive machine-type communications (mMTC). NOMA supports massive connectivity while MBM as a modulation technique provides high spectral and energy efficiency. In the proposed MBM-NOMA, users are equipped with a single transmit antenna surrounded by multiple radio frequency (RF) mirrors while a base station (BS) is equipped with multiple receive antennas for uplink NOMA communication. Maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation technique with successive interference cancellation (SIC) is used at the receiver to detect the MBM-NOMA signals. Performance of the proposed MBM-NOMA is analyzed in terms of bit error rate (BER) and is compared with the conventional SIC based NOMA technique. It is shown that MBM-NOMA outperforms conventional NOMA in terms of error performance, achievable transmission rate and energy efficiency.

Adaptogenic effects of Panax ginseng on modulation of cardiovascular functions

Irfan, Muhammad,Kwak, Yi-Seong,Han, Chang-Kyun,Hyun, Sun Hee,Rhee, Man Hee The Korean Society of Ginseng 2020 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.44 No.4

Cardiovascular diseases are a rapidly growing epidemic with high morbidity and mortality. There is an urgent need to develop nutraceutical-based therapy with minimum side effects to reduce cardiovascular risk. Panax ginseng occupies a prominent status in herbal medicine for its various therapeutic effects against inflammation, allergy, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and even cancer, with positive, beneficial, and restorative effects. The active components found in most P. ginseng varieties are known to include ginsenosides, polysaccharides, peptides, alkaloids, polyacetylene, and phenolic compounds, which are considered to be the main pharmacologically active constituents in ginseng. P. ginseng is an adaptogen. That is, it supports living organisms to maintain optimal homeostasis by exerting effects that counteract physiological changes caused by physical, chemical, or biological stressors. P. ginseng possesses immunomodulatory (including both immunostimulatory and immunosuppressive), neuromodulatory, and cardioprotective effects; suppresses anxiety; and balances vascular tone. P. ginseng has an antihypertensive effect that has been explained by its vasorelaxant action, and paradoxically, it is also known to increase blood pressure by vasoconstriction and help maintain cardiovascular health. Here, we discuss the potential adaptogenic effects of P. ginseng on the cardiovascular system and outline a future research perspective in this area.
