Background: The shortage of human hearts for allotransplantation makes xenotransplantation a possible option for controllable organ providers. To detect acute xenograft rejection, invasive biopsy seems inevitable; however, this occasionally results in poor incision wound healing or infection. To date, no method of noninvasive imaging for early detection of xenograft rejection has been established. We hypothesized that ultrasound speckle tracking would better detect xenograft failure than routine left ventricular ejection fractions (EF). Methods: From August 2013 to July 2015, a total of six cardiac heterotopic xenotransplants (α 1, 3-galactosyltransferase gene-knockout porcine heart) into cynomolgus monkeys were monitored with echocardiography every 3 to 7 days. M-mode and two-dimensional (2D)-EF measurements and myocardial strain analyses were performed. Cardiac xenograft pathology was reviewed from the immediate postoperative biopsy, as well as the necropsy. Results: Myocardial speckle tracking analysis was feasible in all six cases. The longest survival was 43 days. Only one pathology- proven immunologic rejection occurred. Cardiac xenograft failure appeared as two types: a dilated pattern with decreased EF or a myocardial-thickening pattern with preserved EF. Both antibody-mediated rejection (n=1) and sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction (n=2) revealed decreased radial or circumferential strains, but normal-range EF. Xenograft functional decline was significant with respect to radial or circumferential strain (P=0.028), but not to conventional M-mode or 2D-EFs (P=0.600, P=0.340, respectively). Conclusions: Radial and circumferential strains were significantly decreased in both types of xenograft failure, regardless of EF. Further studies are warranted to correlate the strain analysis and immunopathological details.
In this study a theoretical study is carried out on the collision of two rod-like particles suspended in Newtonian fluid under a shear flow. The length of the particle is fixed at 2m while the diameter is varied so that the aspect ratio (length/diameter) varies from 1 to 20. Liquid viscosity is changed from 0.01 to 1 Pa·s. The Brownian motion is considered to be negligible. Both hydrodynamic and van der Waals interactions are included in tracking the position and the orientation of each particle. The Hamaker constant is fixed at 1.06 × 10^(-20) J. The result shows that the kinetic constant of coagulation is reduced to approximately 40% of the value for the non-interacting particles when the viscosity is 1 Pa·s. As collision modes, face-edge, side-side, side-edge and edge-edge are considered. The side-edge mode is most frequently observed in the given range of aspect ratio.
The genus Labdia is belong to the family Cosmopterigidae, comprising 5 described species in South Korea (Park, 1994). In this study, Labdia citracma Meyrick is reported for the first time from Korea. In Japan, this species appears on July to August (Kuroko, 2013). In this study, adult and genitalia are examined and illustrated. As a result, total 6 species has been recorded in Korea up to date.
We have investigated a Mo/Au gate scheme for use in AlGaN/GaN-on-Si HFETs. AlGaN/GaN-on-Si HFETs were fabricated with Ni/Au or Mo/Au gates and their electrical characteristics were compared after thermal stress tests. While insignificant difference was observed in DC characteristics, the Mo/Au gate device exhibited lower on-resistance with superior pulsed characteristics in comparison with the Ni/Au gate device.
We have investigated the interface fixed charge density and the oxide bulk charge density of the metal/PECVD SiO₂/recessed GaN MOS structure. The fabricated AlGaN/GaN-on-Si recessed MOSHFETs exhibited the excellent on/off ratio characteristics. The extracted effective interface fixed charge density and effective oxide bulk charge density for the PECVD SiO₂ deposited on the recessed GaN surface were -5.94 × 10<SUP>11 </SUP>cm<SUP>-2</SUP> and -2.19 × 10<SUP>17</SUP> cm<SUP>-3</SUP>, respectively. The negative bulk charges in the SiO₂ layer were responsible for the positive shift in the threshold voltage as the SiO₂ thickness increased.

Currently power of the diesel engine is increasing continuously, where the wearing problems become more severe. The wearing happens irregularly inside the cylinder, which causes a high burden to the marine engine. In this paper, a novel scheme to measure the wearing and to represent the engine states has been proposed. To monitoring the states of the marine engine efficiently, a laser displacement sensor has been utilized to measure the wearing happening inside the marine engine. To eliminate the noise signals in the distance measurement, the wavelet transform has been adopted, which is robust against the noises caused by vibrations. It is analyzed that Wavelet transform is more effective in eliminating noises than existing MAF(moving average filter) and measuring method that uses acoustical vibration. An engine simulator is designed to develop the system for measuring the engine wears, where the superiority of the wavelet transform against the conventional filtering schemes has been demonstrated.
