        Capital budgeting involves the outlay of current funds in autipation of cash flow benefits to be realized in the future. Capital budgeting decisions by corporations have a major impact on capital formation and on the economic growth of a country. But the presense of inflation in the economy distorts capital budgeting decisions. The purpose of this paper is to provide organization with a practical method of incorporating the expected effects of inflation in their capital budgeting processes. An attempt has been made to discover which aspects of inflation will directly affect proposed investments and how they can be taken into account in an operational manner. This paper examines the importance of developing capital budgeting models and their extensive use in practice by showing the results of a survey of American business firms which was made to determine the capital budgeting methods that they are actually using. And this paper identifies the factors in the investors in the investment decision which are likely to be directly affected by price level changes. In estimating cash flows, it is important to take account of anticipation. Otherwise, a bias arises and there is a tendency to reject some projects that should be accepted. Finally four theoretical models, adjusted to incorporate inflationary effects are outlined and critically evaluated. Van Horne’s model appears to be practical. It is also conceptually sound. Much of his reasoning is based on economic theory and empirical observation. Many theoreticians and practical decision makers have recognized the important of inflation in capital budgeting, yet few heve attempted to incorporate its effects explicitly.

        Seroreactivity to Q Fever Among Slaughterhouse Workers in South Korea

        Objectives: Q fever is a zoonotic disease that occurs worldwide; however, little is known about its prevalence in South Korea. We attempted to determine the prevalence of Q fever seroreactivity among Korean slaughterhouse workers and the risk factors for seroreactivity according to the type of work. Methods: The study was conducted among 1503 workers at a total of 73 slaughterhouses and 62 residual-product disposal plants. During the study period, sites were visited and surveys were administered to employees involved in slaughterhouse work, and serological tests were performed on blood samples by indirect immunofluorescence assays. Serological samples were grouped by job classification into those of slaughter workers, residual-product handlers, inspectors and inspection assistants, and grading testers and testing assistants. Employee risk factors were analyzed according to the type of work. Results: Out of 1481 study subjects who provided a blood sample, 151 (10.2%) showed reactive antibodies. When these results were analyzed in accordance with the type of work, the result of slaughter workers (11.3%) was similar to the result of residual-product handlers (11.4%), and the result of inspectors and assistants (5.3%) was similar to the result of grading testers and assistants (5.4%). Among those who answered in the affirmative to the survey question, "Has there been frequent contact between cattle blood and your mouth while working?" the proportions were 13.4 and 4.6%, respectively, and this was identified as a risk factor that significantly varied between job categories among slaughterhouse workers. Conclusions: This study found a Q fever seroreactivity rate of 10.2% for slaughterhouse workers, who are known to be a high-risk population. Contact with cattle blood around the mouth while working was the differential risk factor between job categories among slaughterhouse workers.

        Phylogenetic Clustering of 4 Prevalent Virulence Genes in Orientia tsutsugamushi Isolates from Human Patients

        The pathogenicity of microbes is involved in many kinds of virulence genes. The relationships between these virulence genes and strains are not clear in Orientia tsutsugamushi yet. In this study, we confirmed the presence of the virulence genes and classified into O. tsutsugamushi isolates using phylogenetic analysis of the virulence genes. We also compared the fatality rates of every isolate via an infection experiment in BALB/c mice using the O. tsutsugamushi isolates, Deajeon03-01, Wonju03-01, and Muju03-01. Moreover, we compared the phylogenetic analysis, in basis with 56 kDa protein sequence which determined from serotype, and virulence genes of O. tsutsugamushi. Our results showed remarkably different fatality rates between Deajeon03-01 and Muju03-01, which are both Boryong strains of O. tsutsugamushi. Also, clustering analyses including these two isolates gave slightly different results depending on whether they were clustered based on virulence genes or on the 56 kDa protein sequences. Consequently, we conclude that fatality rates in O. tsutsugamushi are correlated with differences in both serotypes and virulence genes. We identified some variations within the virulence genes dnaA, virB8, tolR, and trxA among the isolates.

      • Induced ovulation in Korean freshwater fish using LHRH-a combined with pimozide

        한국산 담수어류, 메기, 동자개 및 미꾸라지의 배란 및 산란유도를 촉진하기 위한 효율적이고 경제적인 방법을 개발하기 위해, LHRH-a, HCG, PMSG 및 도파민 길항제인 pimozide의 단독 또는 혼합투여에 의한 효과를 비교 조사하였다. 실험된 모든 어류에서 HCG 또는 HCG+PMSG에서 쉽게 배란이 유도되었다. LHRH-a 단독투여 역시 배란유도에 효과적이었으며, pimozide는 LHRH-a의 효과를 증강시켰다. LHRH-a + pimozide의 혼합투여가 배란유도에 가장 효과적이었다. LHRH-a + pimozide의 혼합투여는 HCG 단독 또는 HCG+PMSG 혼합투여보다 비용면에서 훨씬 경제적인 것으로 나타났다. In order to develop a simple and cost-effective method for accelerating and synchronizing ovulation and spawning in Korean catfish, Silurus asotus, Korean bullhead, Pseudobagrus fulvidraco and loach, Misgurnus mizolepis, the effectiveness of LHRH-a. HCG and PMSG alone or in combination with dopamin antagonists, pimozide was investigated. Ovulation was easily induced by injection of HCG alone or by HCG plus PMSG in experimented fish. A single injection of LHRH-a alone was also effective to induce ovulation in these fish. Pimozide enhanced the activity of LHRH-a, the most effective combination for inducing ovulation was LHRH-a plus pimozide. The technique using LHRH-a combined with pimozide is more economical than HCG alone or HCG+PMSG.

        Exploitation of the Endocytic Pathway by Orientia tsutsugamushi in Nonprofessional Phagocytes

        <B>ABSTRACT</B><P><I>Orientia tsutsugamushi</I>, a causative agent of scrub typhus, is an obligate intracellular bacterium that requires the exploitation of the endocytic pathway in the host cell. We observed the localization of <I>O. tsutsugamushi</I> with clathrin or adaptor protein 2 within 30 min after the infection of nonprofessional phagocytes. We have further confirmed that the infectivity of <I>O. tsutsugamushi</I> is significantly reduced by drugs that block clathrin-mediated endocytosis but not by filipin III, an inhibitor that blocks caveola-mediated endocytosis. In the present study, with a confocal microscope, <I>O. tsutsugamushi</I> was sequentially colocalized with the early and late endosomal markers EEA1 and LAMP2, respectively, within 1 h after infection. The colocalization of <I>O. tsutsugamushi</I> organisms with EEA1 and LAMP2 gradually disappeared until 2 h postinfection, and then free <I>O. tsutsugamushi</I> organisms were found in the cytoplasm. When the acidification of endocytic vesicles was blocked by treating the cells with NH4Cl or bafilomycin A, the escape of <I>O. tsutsugamushi</I> organisms from the endocytic pathway was severely impaired, and the infectivity of <I>O. tsutsugamushi</I> was drastically reduced. To our knowledge, this is the first report that the invasion of <I>O. tsutsugamushi</I> is dependent on the clathrin-dependent endocytic pathway and the acidification process of the endocytic vesicles in nonprofessional phagocytes.</P>

        Orientia tsutsugamushi Infection Induces CD4+ T Cell Activation via Human Dendritic Cell Activity

        Orientia tsutsugamushi, a gram-negative bacterium, causes severe acute febrile illness in humans. Despite this danger, the route of infection, infectivity, and protective mechanisms of the host``s immune response to O. tsutsugamushi are unclear. Dendritic cells (DCs) are one of the most important cell types in bridging the innate and adaptive immune responses. In this study, we observed that O. tsutsugamushi infects and replicates in monocyte-derived DCs (MODCs). During infection and replication, the expressions of the cytokines IL-12 and TNF-α, as well as the co-stimulatory molecules CD80, CD83, CD86, and CD40, were increased in MODCs. When O. tsutsugamushi-treated MODCs were co-cultured with autologous CD4+ T cells, they enhanced production of IFN-γ, a major Th1 cytokine. Collectively, our results show that O. tsutsugamushi can replicate in MODCs and can simultaneously induce MODC maturation and increase proinflammatory cytokine levels in MODCs that subsequently activate CD4+ T cells.

        뱀장어의 in vitro Vitellogenin 합성에 대한 Estradiol 과 뇌하수체 호르몬의 영향

        Hepatocytes of Anguilla japonica have been prepared using a collagenase perfusion technique. The isolated cells attached efficiently to fibronectin-coated culture dishes and subsequently formed monolayers in serum-free medium. These cultures maintained in appropriate medium at least for 10 days with minimal cell loss. The effects of estradiol and pituitary hormones on vitellogenin (Vg) synthesis were examined in primary hepatocyte culture of the immature eels. In fish, as in other oviparous vertebrates, estrogen is a major inducer of Vg synthesis. However, estradiol-17β(E₂) alone was insufficient to induce Vg synthesis in cultures of eel hepatocytes. Combination of E₂with growth hormone (GH) and/or prolactin (PRL) markedly stimulated Vg synthesis. Even in cultures exposed to E₂or precultured without hormones for 8 days, E₂alone could not fully induce Vg synthesis. The synthesis of Vg was dramatically increased when hepatocytes were cultured in medium supplemented with E₂+GH+PRL for 6 days. At this point, even though GH and/or PRL were eliminated from the medium, Vg synthesis was not influenced by these factors during culture of further 3 days. These results indicate that pituitary hormones, in particular GH and PRL, play important roles in the regulation of Vg synthesis in primary cultures of eel hepatocytes.
