Sohn, Hyang-Sook. 1997. Mora Assignment and Vowel Shortening. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 5, 119-139. The purpose of this paper is to provide a moraic analysis of vowel shortening in the Kyungsang dialect, with crucial reference to the syllable weight. This paper argues for a moraic representation in which sonorants are assigned the mora in the coda position whereas obstruents are not. Vowel shortening, then, is equivalent to the loss of a corresponding mora when the mora-bearing unit is resyllabified. This explains why vowel shortening is restricted to the stems ending with sonorant. The shortening contrast in the stems ending with consonant clusters is also examined on the basis of two factors: prosodic licensing of the stem-final segment and its moraic nature. The contrast in coronal vs. noncoronal obstruents suggests that sonority hierarchy be further refined to reflect their different moraicity.

No-Ju Kim & Hyang-Sook Sohn. 1999. The Output-to-Output Weight-Identity Constraint in the Forms Related by Optional Rules. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 5.2, 323-336. This paper shows that compensatory lengthening occurs in Korean only in the forms related by optional phonological or morphological rules. This peculiarity is explained within the framework of Correspondence Theory by the Output-to-Output (00) Weight-Identity Constraint, which regulates weight identity between the two possible output forms. This paper argues that the notion of faithfulness is extensible to the forms related not only by morphological rules but also by phonological rules. (Kyungpook National University)

The present study might serve to dispel the clich'es that creativity is divergent thinking and creative insight occurs independently from hard work and conscious experimentation. Cognitive science seems to provide a good frame of reference for the study of creative processes. And it would seem clear that metacognitive processes can be related to creative thinking processes. Metacognition refers to the control or self regulation involved in setting goals, planning, using systematic cognitive processing, monitoring, and evaluating. The systematic metacognitive approaches of creativity that have been examined are : (1)Cognitive Spiral Model (2)Creativity As A Self-Regulatory Metacognitive Process (As A model) (3) Geneplore Model and(4) Knowledge Base, Metacognitive Skill, and Personality Factor Model. Several implications for educational practice that can be obtained from the models are as follows (1) Provide tasks and materials to stimulate self-initiated exploration : (2) Encourage to make domain-relevant knowledge base : (3) Promote self-regulation process : (4) Provide supportive environment to tolerate ambiguity.

Background : The cun measurement System, an essential and convenient method in locating acupoints, has been widely used in the practice of acupuncture. However, traditional cun measurement has been criticized for its lack of reliability. Objectives : The purposes of this study are to determine if one cun measured by the directional methods have a consistency with that of proportional methods and to investigate which factors are related with these differences, especially in forearm. Methods : The distance between the elbow crease and the wrist crease of forearm was compared to a reference value of one cun obtained by the directional method. In this method, one cun is one third of the distance between index finger and Small finger of a subject, measured at proximal interphalangeal joint. In addition, to investigate the factors influencing the differences between these two methods, we measured the height and body weight and calculated body mass index (BMI). Finally we analyzed the factors correlated with these lengths by linear regression test. Results : The results showed that one cun obtained by the directional methods were significantly different from one cun by the proportional methods in forearm. It was demonstrated that the length acquired with the directional method was more correlated with body weight and body mass index, while the length obtained by the proportional method was more correlated with the height.

Morphological basis of sonorant assimilation in Korean

Focusing on aspects of assimilation between two alveolar sonorants /n/ and /l/, this study provides an optimality-theoretic account of sonorant assimilation, where lateralization takes place when the lateral is followed by the nasal, but nasalization is the predominant pattern of assimilation when the precedence is reversed. This generalization holds true for different strata of the lexicon and different domains of the prosodic hierarchy. This study claims that morphological information on the status of morphemes in the domain of sonorant assimilation is crucial on account of geminate structure in the output. When two alveolar sonorants are in contact across the prosodic word boundary, the nature of geminate in the output is not feature-dependent, but stem-driven, and more specifically, faithfulness to the stem-final sonorant is more imperative than to the stem-initial sonorant.

Prosodic Structure of Wh-interrogatives and Intervention Effects in North Kyungsang Korean

        Hyang-Sook Sohn(손형숙) 한국언어학회 2017 언어 Vol.42 No.4

Resorting to prosodic structure of double foci construction, this study aims to provide a prosody-based account of intervention effects, and claims that fronting of the wh-in-situ as a syntactic operation is prosodically motivated. In this approach, intervention effects arise as a consequence of prosodic search for the optimal form to resolve the conflicts among prosodic constraints induced by focus. Selection of optimal prosodic structure is accounted for in the framework of Optimality Theory and this study shows how resolution of conflicts among prosodically motivated constraints results in asymmetry in linear precedence between interveners and wh-operator. This supports the claim that prosody is a crucial factor in determining grammatical linearization. Prosodic constraints induced by wh-operator and focus are further extended to indefinite pronominals in focus construction. As a corollary to interactions of prosodic constraints induced by focus, linear precedence relation between indefinite pronominals and focus naturally falls out from the constraint ranking required anyway. Examining a set of pairwise precedence relations based on prosodic structure, we draw the generalization that indefinite pronominals are followed by wh-operator, which in turn is followed by focus-inducing items. This indicates that fronting of DPs, relative to another focus, is a necessary condition for optimal phrasing in focus construction, and corroborates the claim that syntactic structure is conditioned by prosodic structure.

Pitch Accent Realization in North Kyungsang Korean : Tonal Alignment as a Function of Nasal Position in Syllables

        Hyang-Sook Sohn 한국음성학회 2011 말소리와 음성과학 Vol.3 No.2

This study investigates patterns of the alignment of the accentual peaks in bisyllabic words of the CVNCV, CVNV, and CVNNV structures in North Kyungsang Korean. Based on the tonal alignment, patterns of the F0 pitch excursion are discussed relative to one another. Issues are addressed concerning how the tonal targets are aligned, and how the tonal specifications of nasals in postvocalic, intervocalic, and prevocalic environments are supplied in the LH, HL, and HH classes. Tonal specification of nasals in various environments is accounted for by extension of the L target, displacement of the pitch peak, and interpolation between two tonal targets, depending on the tonal class. The results in this study provide preliminary evidence that the categorical alignment of the tonal targets is implemented by simply checking the presence or absence of a nasal before or after the nucleus vowel on the segmental string, without reference to the constituency of the nasal in the syllable structure. However, the prosodic structure has a key role to play in explaining speaker-dependent variations in the tonal alignment. Sensitivity to tautosyllabicity has an effect on the shape of the F0 contour, and disparity in the patterns of the pitch excursion is represented as a function of syllable structure correlated with segmental composition of the nasal.

Random patterning in paradigms of noun-final coronal obstruents

        Hyang-Sook Sohn 한국음운론학회 2012 음성·음운·형태론 연구 Vol.18 No.1

'스콜라' 이용 시 소속기관이 구독 중이 아닌 경우, 오후 4시부터 익일 오전 9시까지 원문보기가 가능합니다.

Focusing on random variation in paradigms of /th/- and /ch/-final stems in Native Korean nouns, this study investigates a comprehensive range of paradigmatic patterns of coronals in relation to the categorical stages of leveling in progress. The paradigmatic patterns derived from the phonological system are drawn into comparison with the survey results. A survey designed to test the phonetic value of the stem-final coronal was conducted to explore the paradigmatic patterns speakers put to use for lexical items, and furthermore, to abstract away a gradient system of paradigmatic types reflecting the speakers’ collective preference in usage. Based on paradigmatic types and their frequencies, this study demonstrates that random variation of the paradigms of the /th/-final stems is motivated by analogical extension of palatalization in progress as well as skewed distribution in the lexicon. Random patterning of /ch/-final stems, however, is primarily attributed to skewed distribution since reanalysis undoing palatalization plays a limited role. The effect of the lexical frequency on the paradigm frequency supports the claim that the phonetically conditioned sound change affects the high frequency words first before the low frequency words, while analogical changes affect the less frequent items before the more frequent ones.

Word-final obstruent licensing, analogical leveling and gradience in the lexicon

        Hyang-Sook Sohn(손형숙) 한국음운론학회 2007 음성·음운·형태론 연구 Vol.13 No.1

'스콜라' 이용 시 소속기관이 구독 중이 아닌 경우, 오후 4시부터 익일 오전 9시까지 원문보기가 가능합니다.

There is an increasing tendency in the synchronic grammar of Korean, whereby marked non-coronals are reduced to unmarked lax obstruents and all coronal obstruents to alveolar fricative in word-final position. Word-final licensing in each sub-lexicon is represented by the ranking of I-O correspondence with respect to the markedness, and the merger of the gradiently related sublexicons is characterized by demotion of I-O correspondence. This study claims that the phonological change underway is an analogical leveling, as a parallel to the merger in the lexicon. Also claimed is that this recent development is induced by the statistically skewed lexicon and is gravitated towards a more densely sampled region in the lexicon. This is in accordance with the stochastic prediction that analogical leveling pivots around lexically frequent obstruents. By projecting a unified constraint ranking that encodes indexed I-O correspondence for each sublexicon, this study proposes a lexically conditioned grammar and accounts for the gradient nature of the lexicon.
