      • Analysis of HOX Gene Expression Patterns in Human Breast Cancer

        HOX genes are highly conserved transcription factors that determine the identity of cells and tissues along the anterior-posterior body axis in developing embryos. Aberrations in HOX gene expression have been shown in various tumors. However, the correlation of HOX gene expression patterns with tumorigenesis and cancer progression has not been fully characterized. Here, to analyze putative candidate HOX genes involved in breast cancer tumorigenesis and progression, the expression patterns of 39 HOX genes were analyzed using breast cancer cell lines and patient-derived breast tissues. In vitro analysis revealed that HOXA and HOXB gene expression occurred in a subtype-specific manner in breast cancer cell lines, whereas most HOXC genes were strongly expressed in most cell lines. Among the 39 HOX genes analyzed, 25 were chosen for further analysis in malignant and non-malignant tissues. Fourteen genes, encoding HOXA6, A13, B2, B4, B5, B6, B7, B8, B9, C5, C9, C13, D1, and D8, out of 25 showed statistically significant differential expression patterns between non-malignant and malignant breast tissues and are putative candidates associated with the development and malignant progression of breast cancer. Our data provide a valuable resource for furthering our understanding of HOX gene expression in breast cancer and the possible involvement of HOX genes in tumor progression.


        Adenosine triphosphate-based chemotherapy response assay-guided chemotherapy in unresectable colorectal liver metastasis

        <P><B>Background:</B></P><P>This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of adenosine triphosphate-based chemotherapy response assay (ATP-CRA)-guided neoadjuvant chemotherapy for increasing resectability in patients with unresectable colorectal liver metastasis.</P><P><B>Patients and methods:</B></P><P>Patients were randomised into two groups: Group A was treated by conventional chemotherapy regimen and Group B was treated by chemotherapy regimen according to the ATP-CRA. Three chemotherapeutic agents (5-fluorouracil, oxaliplatin and irinotecan) were tested by ATP-CRA and more sensitive agents were selected. Either FOLFOX or FOLFIRI was administered. Between Group A and B, treatment response and resectability were compared.</P><P><B>Results:</B></P><P>Between November 2008 and October 2010, a total 63 patients were randomised to Group A (<I>N</I>=32) or Group B (<I>N</I>=31). FOLFOX was more preferred in Group A than in Group B (26 out of 32 (81.3%) <I>vs</I> 20 out of 31 (64.5%)). Group B showed better treatment response than Group A (48.4% <I>vs</I> 21.9%, <I>P</I>=0.027). The resectability of hepatic lesion was higher in Group B (35.5% <I>vs</I> 12.5%, <I>P</I>=0.032). Mean duration from chemotherapy onset to the time of liver resection was 11 cycles (range 4–12) in Group A and 8 cycles (range 8–16) in Group B.</P><P><B>Conclusion:</B></P><P>This study showed that tailored-chemotherapy based on ATP-CRA could improve the treatment response and resectability in initially unresectable colorectal liver metastasis.</P>

      • Optical gain and penalty characteristics of a fiber-Bragg-grating based active optical-add-drop multiplexer

        <P>We investigate optical gain and penalty characteristics of a fiber-Bragg-grating based active optical-add-drop multiplexer (OADM). The active OADM has a two-stage structure and can amplify all the add/drop/thru channels simultaneously. The drop-channel penalty is a key parameter for the reliable operation of the active OADM. This penalty, caused mainly by multiple reflections within the active OADM, can be minimized adjusting pump powers. At the minimum drop-channel penalty, our active OADM shows fairly high optical gains as 15.5, 21, and 19.4 dB for the add, drop, and thru channels, respectively. Nevertheless, the penalties of these channels are comparable to the passive OADM.</P>

        Associations of Handgrip Strength and Handgrip Strength Asymmetry With Depression in the Elderly in Korea: A Cross-sectional Study

        Objectives: Recent studies have suggested that assessing handgrip strength (HGS) asymmetry together with HGS may be helpful for evaluating problems in geriatric patients. This study aimed to identify whether HGS asymmetry, weakness, or both were associated with depression in Korean older adults. Methods: This study included 4274 subjects from the sixth and seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Depression was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The maximum HGS of the dominant hand was used as a representative value. HGS symmetry was categorized by the ratio of the HGS of the dominant hand to that of non-dominant hand. The odds ratio (OR) for depression was calculated according to the HGS and its symmetry. Results: In total, 240 (12.5%) men and 534 (22.7%) women had depression. HGS or HGS asymmetry showed no statistically significant associations with depression in elderly men. Elevated odds of depression were observed in elderly women with low HGS (OR, 1.93; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.33 to 2.81) or prominent HGS asymmetry (OR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.02 to 2.08). There was a positive additive interaction between asymmetric HGS and weakness, as women with low and prominently asymmetric HGS showed higher odds of depression (OR, 3.77; 95% CI, 2.16 to 6.59) than women with high and symmetric HGS. Conclusions: Depression in elderly Korean women was associated with both low and asymmetric HGS. Our findings support the potential value of HGS asymmetry as an indicator of HGS.


        Weather-insensitive optical free-space communication using gain-saturated optical fiber amplifiers

        This paper presents a weather-insensitive optical free-space communication (OFSC) method supporting optical packet channels. It operates optical fiber amplifiers (OFAs) used as boosters in gain-saturation regions. When the propagation loss gets too high, it decreases the average packet rate, or the average packet length, or both, to increase the optical power level launched into the free space. As a demonstration, 8 × 10 Gigabit-Ethernet (GbE) channels were transmitted over a terrestrial distance of 2.4 km. One gain-saturated free-space optical repeater is used at the halfway.

        Using Minute Papers to Improve Lecture Demonstrations

        Minute papers are brief papers written at the end of a lecture in response to one or two questions posed by the instructor. The answers are discussed briefly at the beginning of the next lecture. We used minute papers to follow students' understanding and response to lecture demonstrations in an introductory general chemistry course. An analysis of these minute papers suggest that the following characteristics are important, when using demonstrations as teaching aids. 1) The purpose of a demonstration should be stated as explicitly as possible. 2) Instructors should be explicit about what is happening and what students should be looking for .3) Demonstrations should be kept as simple as possible, perhaps illustrating one concept. Finally, we note that students believe that the visual component of demonstrations enhances their comprehension of chemistry concepts.


        Facile reduction and stabilization of ginsenoside-functionalized gold nanoparticles: optimization, characterization, and in vitro cytotoxicity studies

        <P>Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are forecasted to provide an attractive platform in biomedicine and catalysis with their potentials of combining a variety of biophysicochemical properties into an integrated nanodevice with great therapeutic and optical functions. There are several reports of crude plant extracts mediating the conversion of metal ions into nanoparticles. However, we aimed to investigate the capability of single bioactive compounds, namely ginsenosides compound K (C-K) and Rh2, to accommodate a synergistic chemical reduction of gold salts by one-pot green chemistry. Ginsenosides C-K and Rh2 are unique triterpenoid saponins present in Panax ginseng Meyer, a perennial plant traditionally used as an oriental medicinal herbal with long history. C-K and Rh2 have demonstrated diverse pharmacological properties such as anticancer, anti-inflammation, anti-aging, and neuroprotective properties. The reduction of gold ions by these ginsenosides led to the production of nontoxic GNPs as tested in mousemacrophage (J774A. 1) and human kidney epithelial (HEK-293) in vitro. The kinetics of the bioreduction and the influence of pH were examined by an ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer. GNPs were characterized by field emission transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Ginsenoside loading efficiency of C-K-GNPs and Rh2-GNPs was determined to be approximately 62.83% and 54.91%, respectively, by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). These results suggest that onepot synthesis by ginsenosides C-K and Rh2may be useful for producing ginsenoside-loaded gold nanocarriers.</P>

        유아 환경교육 관련 연구 경향 분석

        본 연구는 유아 환경교육 관련 선행연구 고찰을 통해 연구동향을 파악하여 향후 유아 환경교육의 방향을 모색하는데 목적이 있다. 분석대상은 국내에서 이루어진 유아 환경교육 관련 선행연구들로 유아교육 관련 논문들 중 ‘환경(교육)’, ‘자연친화’, ‘자연체험’, ‘생태’, ‘생명’, ‘숲’, ‘녹색성장’, ‘지속가능발전’을 검색어로 수집한 학술지논문 총 310편이다. 수집한 문헌들은 우선 유아 환경교육 관련 연구의 전반적 현황을 위해 연구주제별, 연도별, 학술지별, 연구유형별, 연구방법별 빈도와 백분율로 연구논문의 분포 및 추이를 분석하였고, 다음으로 유아 환경교육 관련 연구 내용은 독립변인과 종속변인으로 구분하여 분석하였다. 분석된 결과를 토대로 유아 환경교육의 방향을 제안하였다. The purpose of this study was to explore the research trends of early childhood environmental education and to determine the developmental direction for this field. To achieve this purpose, antecedent studies related to early childhood environmental education were reviewed. Through the analysis of trends based on the literature, the direction for early childhood environmental education was revealed during discussions.
