In this study, the antioxidant activities of juice, peel, and seed parts of pomegranate were investigated by using DPPH scavenging activity, β-carotene bleaching method, reducing power, and metal chelating activity. Sample of pomegranates which are named Punica granatum L. cv. Hicaznar, genotype 19-121, genotype 17-67, and genotype 19-66 obtained from BATEM (West Mediterranean Agricultural Research Institute) in Anlalya. The EC50values of DPPH scavenging activities in peel extracts (PE)had 23.4-fold higher than the juice extracts (JE), and the seed extracts (SE) had 2.3-fold higher than JE. The reducing power in peel extracts was found to be 4.7-fold higher than SE and 10.5-fold higher than the JE. The highest metal chelating capacity (37.22%) was determined in peel, while the lowest (7.151%) in seed. Generally, in peel, the total polyphenol, flavonoid, tannin contents, and in juice, the total polyphenol, anthocyanin, tannin contents, and acidity significantly affected to antioxidant activities.

The objective of this study was to compare the antioxidant activities of lyophilized olive leaf water extracts (OLWExtracts) from 21 different olive tree cultivars. The highest total phenolic content (102.69±1.63 μg GAE/mg extract) was found in cultivar ‘Esek Zeytini’ and the lowest content (78.52±2.18 μg GAE/mg extract) was in ‘Uslu’. The highest total flavonoid content (12.47±0.12 μg QE/mg extract) obtained from ‘Frantoio’. According to EC50values, ‘Domat’ have the highest DPPH scavenging activity (EC50 =59 μg/mL), reducing power (EC50 =180 μg/mL),and superoxide radical scavenging capacity (EC50=44 μg/mL). While, ‘Ascolana’ showed the highest metal chelating capacity (EC50=163 μg/mL), ‘Memecik’ showed the highest hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging capacity. Research results exhibited that OLWExtracts are comparable to synthetic antioxidants. The correlation study showed that while total phenolic content correlated with DPPH scavenging activity and reducing power (p<0.01), total flavonoid content correlated with metal chelating and superoxide radical scavenging capacity (p<0.05).
Development of Six Tumors in a Sebaceus Nevus of Jadassohn: Report of a Case
Hulya Yikilkan,Serap Gozel,Melahat Donmez,Noyan Can Akdur 대한병리학회 2013 Journal of Pathology and Translational Medicine Vol.47 No.6
Nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn is a congenital cutaneous hamartoma comprised of multiple skin structures. It has the potential to develop into variety of neoplasms of various epidermal adnexal origins. While multiple tumors may occasionally arise, it is unusual for more than four tumors to arise simultaneously within a single sebaceus nevus. Here in, we report a case of a 70-year-old woman with six neoplastic proliferations including a syringocystadenoma papilliferum, pigmented trichoblastoma, tubular apocrine adenoma, sebaceoma, tumors of follicular infundibulum and superficial epithelioma with sebaceus differentiation arising in a long standing nevus sebaceus on the scalp. Our case is extraordinary because a single nevus sebaceus contained six neoplastic proliferations with differentiation toward the folliculosebaceous-apocrine unit.

Whither feminist alliance? Secular feminists and Islamist women in Turkey
Hulya Simga,Gulru Z. Goker 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2017 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.23 No.3
The women’s movement has become increasingly entangled with the “secularism versus Islamism” debate in today’s Turkey. While secular feminists believe that escalating authoritarianism and Islamic revivalism threaten gender equality and the gains of the women’s rights movement, Islamist women contest the “western/secular” ideal of gender equality on account of its being antithetical to the Islamic canon. The mutual marginalization by feminists and Islamists, mainly fueled by partisan politics, harms the much needed solidarity among women’s groups to solve the problems women face in Turkey, such as violence and unequal political participation. Moreover, this polarization has the harmful effect of reinforcing patriarchy: men, therefore face no challenges and simply continue to remain the sole producers and controllers of socio-political policies and epistemic resources. Hence, there seems to be a pressing need for secular feminists and Islamists to start a dialogue and focus on problems and issues they share in common, so as to seek urgent solutions to them. This article inquires into the viability of such an alliance through the proliferation of deliberative platforms where civil society organizations can meet at a safe distance from partisan politics and enter productive dialogue and generate policies to resolve the crucial problems women are facing in Turkey.
Relationship Between Bullying and Health Problems in Primary School Children
Hulya Karatas,Candan Ozturk 한국간호과학회 2011 Asian Nursing Research Vol.5 No.2
Purpose The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between bullying and exposure to bullying and the health problems in the primary school children. Methods This study was conducted on 92 parents and 92 students who were sixth grade students in two primary schools in Izmir. The data were collected using the Peer Bullying Scale Adolescent Form and the Identification of Health Problems Form. The data were analyzed through χ2 analysis and odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval. Results About forty-nine percent of the students (48.9%) was male, 51.1% of them was female and the average age was 11.6 ± 0.53 years. It was found that students who had high scores for being exposed to bullying were significantly more likely to experience headache, feeling bad, crying restlessness, nervousness, sleeping problems, dizziness; whereas students who had high bullying scores were significantly more likely to experience only poor appetite. Conclusions Students exposed to bullying have more health problems than the bullying students. It is recommended that programs designed to prevent the negative effects of bullying be developed.
Adsorption and column flotation studies on talc using anionic and cationic collectors
Hulya Kursun,Ayten Ates 한국화학공학회 2010 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.27 No.6
Adsorption properties and column flotation were studied to investigate the interaction of the anionic and cationic collectors and flotation recoveries for talc mineral. Adsorption capacity is dependent on pH, adsorption time, temperature, collector concentration, and particle size. Langmuir adsorption model was suitable for describing isotherms. Analyses were carried out using UV spectrometry. In this study, we analyzed some parameters affecting column flotation performance. It was determined that adsorption capacity, especially, had an important role in column flotation enrichment.

This study was designed to investigate, in the Turkish population, the association of methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Our study included 249 patients with type II diabetes mellitus (102 men, 147 women) and 214 healthy volunteers as controls (91 men, 123 women). MTHFR C677T genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction, restriction fragment length polymorphism techniques. No differences were observed in the distribution of MTHFR genotypes or allele frequencies in the cases versus the controls. The frequency of the MTHFR-mutated allele (T) was 31.7% in the type II diabetes mellitus versus 31.1% of the controls. The homozygous mutation (T/T) in the MTHFR gene was identified in 12% of the type II diabetes mellitus versus 9.3% of the controls. Patients with the TT genotype showed a higher prevalence of LVH when compared to patients with the CC and CT genotypes (p = 0.01). The MTHFR gene C677T mutation may be a possible risk factor for the development of LVH in the type II diabetic patients

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To determine the weight change trend among the adult Turkish population after 1 yr of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and factors associated with weight change. MATERIALS/METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 26 February and 6 March 2021 using an online questionnaire that included questions for sociodemographic variables, eating habits, stress level, and the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-R18. Those who weighed themselves 1–2 weeks before the pandemic was declared in Turkey and remembered their weight were invited to participate in the study. Trends in weight and body mass index (BMI) change were calculated. The variables associated with a 1% change in BMI were assessed using hierarchical regression analysis. RESULTS: The study was conducted with 1,630 adults (70.25% female) with a mean age of 32.09 (11.62) yrs. The trend of weight change was found to increase by an average of 1.15 ± 6.10 kg (female +0.72 ± 5.51, male +2.16 ± 7.22 kg) for the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rate of participants with a normal BMI (18.50–24.99 kg/㎡) decreased to 51.91% from 55.75%. Consuming an "Increased amount of food compared to before the pandemic" was found to be the independent variable that had the strongest association with a 1% increase in BMI (β = 0.23 P < 0.001). The average change in the BMI was higher in older individuals than in those who were younger. A high stress level was associated with a decrease in BMI (β = –0.04 P = 0.048). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the factors associated with weight change after 1 yr of the pandemic in the Turkish population was reported for the first time. A high stress level and increased weight gain trend still occur in Turkey after 1 yr of the pandemic.
