The Mechanism of Chronic Alcoholism-mediated Impairment in Traumatic Brain Injury

Alcohol-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common condition in medical and forensic practice and results in high pre-hospital mortality. However, the related mechanism is still unclear. Herein, we establish a chronic alcoholism model of rats, and the chronic alcoholism rats showed an axonal degeneration and a decrease in the numerical density of synapses (p<0.01). Moreover, these rats also showed a compensatory increase in PSD-95 expression (p<0.01). Compared with chronic alcoholism rats, the EtOH-TBI rats group showed high mortality (50%, p<0.01), inhibition of respiration before death, severe axonal injury and decrease in PSD-95 expression (p<0.05). So, we concluded that chronic alcoholism can induce significant synapse loss and axonal impairment in the medulla oblongata and render the brain more susceptible to TBI. The synergistic effect of chronic alcoholism and TBI induces significant synapse and axon impairment and contributed to high mortality.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) possesses a higher rate of distant recurrence and a poorer prognosis than other breast cancer subtypes. Interestingly, most of the heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) client proteins are oncoproteins, and some are closely related to unfavorable factors of TNBC patients. 17-Demethoxy-reblastatin (17-DR), a novel nonbenzoquinone- type geldanamycin analog, exhibited potent Hsp90 ATPase inhibition activity. In this study, the anticancer effects of 17-DR on TNBC MDA-MB-231 cells were investigated. These results showed that 17-DR inhibited cell proliferation, induced apoptosis, and suppressed cell invasion and migration in the MDA-MB-231 cells. Down-regulation of the key Hsp90-dependent tumor-driving molecules, such as RIP1 and MMP-9, by 17-DR may be related to these effects. Taken together, our results suggest that 17-DR has potential as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of TNBC.
Radiological gastrostomy: A comparative analysis of different image-guided methods

Background: Radiographic guided percutaneous gastrostomy has become a safe and effective enteral nutrition method for patients who can not eat by mouth. Fluoroscopy, computed tomography (CT) and cone-beam CT have been routinely used clinically. The aim of this study was to compare the advantages and disadvantages of percutaneous gastrostomy using different radiographic guided methods. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 538 patients undergoing percutaneous gastrostomy in our department. According to the image guidance method used in gastrostomy, the patients were divided into groups A by fluoroscopy guidance, group B by fluoroscopy combined with C-arm CT guidance, and group C with the whole process CT guidance. The gastrostomy success rate, complication rate, procedure time, and patient radiation dose were analyzed in the three groups. Results: Among 538 patients, 534 were successful and the success rates are 94.3%, 99.3%, and 100% in group A, B, and C, respectively (P > 0.05). There were 3 cases occurred postoperative bleeding as serious adverse events and transferred to surgical gastrostomy. The minor complications include local infection, hyperplasia of granulation tissue, tube obstruction or prolapse, and local pain of the ostomy. The minor complication rates were 10.5%, 10.4%, and 7.7% in group A, B, and C, respectively (P > 0.05). The average procedure time was 25.57 ± 5.99 minutes, 29.01 ± 6.63 minutes, and 45.47 ± 8.98 minutes, respectively (χ2 = 87.98, P < 0.001). The average radiation dosage was 27.30 ± 19.27 mGy, 145.07 ± 106.08 mGy, and 2,590.26 ± 1,088.22 mGy, respectively (χ2 = 204.44, P < 0.001). Conclusion: There were no significant differences in the success rates and complication rates of gastrostomy under the three guiding methods. For difficult cases, CT-guided gastrostomy may be a very useful supplemental method.
Entanglement Swapping in Two Independent Atom-Cavity-Optomechanical Systems

We investigate the dynamics of entanglement between two remote, macroscopic, mechanical modes in a model consisting of two cavities, with each cavity containing a two-level atom and having one movable mirror. The results show that the time evolution of entanglement exhibits periodic behavior that does not depend on the atomic coherent angles and that the amount of entanglement increases with increasing atomic coherent angle. A maximally entangled state between mechanical modes can be prepared. We find a simple method for inferring the entanglement properties between two mechanical modes. We propose a potential way to control and manipulate the entanglement.

Sulforaphane (SFN), a natural compound derived from cruciferous vegetables, has been proved to possess potent anti-cancer activity. SMYD3 is a histone methyltransferase which is closely related to the proliferation and migration of cancer cells. This study showed that SFN could dose-dependently induce cell cycle arrest, stimulate apoptosis, and inhibit proliferation and migration of gastric carcinoma cells. Accompanied with these anticancer effects, SMYD3 and its downstream genes, myosin regulatory light chain 9, and cysteine-rich angiogenic inducer 61, was downregulated by SFN. Furthermore, overexpression of SMYD3 via transfection could abolish the effects of SFN, suggesting that SMYD3 might be an important mediator of SFN. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing the role of SMYD3 in the anti-cancer of SFN. These findings might throw light on the development of novel anti-cancer drugs and functional food using SFN-rich cruciferous vegetables.

Optically isotropic liquid crystal (LC) mixture such as blue-phase LC and nanostructured LC composites exhibit the advantages of fast response time, high contrast ratio and wide-viewing angle due to the induced birefringence along the horizontal electric field. Utilizing this mixture, a novel single cell gap in-plane switching-type polymer-stabilized blue-phase transflective liquid crystal display by embedding the nanowire grid polarizer as a polarization-dependent reflective polarizer in the R region is proposed. This device can be used as a normal black mode without any quarter-wave plate or patterned in-cell phase retarder. Moreover, the transmittance is identical to the reflectance so that it will be suitable for single gamma driving. Detailed electro-optic performances, such as voltage-dependent light efficiency and viewing angle of the proposed device configuration, are investigated.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This paper proposes the dual-wavelength transmission technique for improving the performance of the gain-saturated semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based free-space optical (FSO) communication link. When the gain saturated SOA is used to suppress turbulence-induced scintillation, extinction ratio (ER) degradation effect occurs owing to the high-dynamic gain frequency characteristics for intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) system. The proposed method uses small-spacing dual-wavelength (signal and supplemental wavelengths) transmission to compensate ER degradation by mitigating the gain difference between the bits ‘1’ and ‘0’. Regarding the supplemental wavelength, continuous wave (CW) with various average powers and differential signal (DS) transmissions are experimentally investigated. The proposed technique is evaluated under various turbulence channel strengths. The experimental results show that the bit-error rate (BER) performance is significantly improved via effective ER degradation compensation and scintillation suppression.</P>

Objective: To evaluate the performance of a convolutional neural network (CNN) model that can automatically detect and classify rib fractures, and output structured reports from computed tomography (CT) images. Materials and Methods: This study included 1079 patients (median age, 55 years; men, 718) from three hospitals, between January 2011 and January 2019, who were divided into a monocentric training set (n = 876; median age, 55 years; men, 582), five multicenter/multiparameter validation sets (n = 173; median age, 59 years; men, 118) with different slice thicknesses and image pixels, and a normal control set (n = 30; median age, 53 years; men, 18). Three classifications (fresh, healing, and old fracture) combined with fracture location (corresponding CT layers) were detected automatically and delivered in a structured report. Precision, recall, and F1-score were selected as metrics to measure the optimum CNN model. Detection/diagnosis time, precision, and sensitivity were employed to compare the diagnostic efficiency of the structured report and that of experienced radiologists. Results: A total of 25054 annotations (fresh fracture, 10089; healing fracture, 10922; old fracture, 4043) were labelled for training (18584) and validation (6470). The detection efficiency was higher for fresh fractures and healing fractures than for old fractures (F1-scores, 0.849, 0.856, 0.770, respectively, p = 0.023 for each), and the robustness of the model was good in the five multicenter/multiparameter validation sets (all mean F1-scores > 0.8 except validation set 5 [512 x 512 pixels; F1-score = 0.757]). The precision of the five radiologists improved from 80.3% to 91.1%, and the sensitivity increased from 62.4% to 86.3% with artificial intelligence-assisted diagnosis. On average, the diagnosis time of the radiologists was reduced by 73.9 seconds. Conclusion: Our CNN model for automatic rib fracture detection could assist radiologists in improving diagnostic efficiency, reducing diagnosis time and radiologists’ workload.
The Influence of Environmental Changes on the Generation and Development of Organizations

Purpose - This study attempts to examine the influence of external environments on the generation and development of organizations and the complex diversity of organizational form. Desing/Methodology - A theory analysis framework was set up first. Then, the case study method and secondary data were used to attest the framework, through a comparative analysis of a group of classical Chinese firms in the context of 30 years of China’s economic reform and opening-up. Findings - The generation and change of organizational structure is closely related to a wider range of organization ecology and institutional environments, rather than being the result of initiatives of organization itself. In China, enterprise external institutional factors are particularly important. Implications - The study facilitates to understand the generation and development of Chinese enterprises, and the universality and particularity of Chinese situation.
