        Health disparities between lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults and the general population in South Korea:

        OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate health disparities between lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults and the general population in Korea, where there is low public acceptance of sexual minorities and a lack of research on the health of sexual minorities. METHODS: The research team conducted a nationwide survey of 2,335 Korean LGB adults in 2016. Using the dataset, we estimated the age-standardized prevalence ratios (SPRs) for poor self-rated health, musculoskeletal pain, depressive symptoms, suicidal behaviors, smoking, and hazardous drinking. We then compared the SPRs of the LGB adults and the general population which participated in three different nationally representative surveys in Korea. SPRs were estimated for each of the four groups (i.e., gay men, bisexual men, lesbians, and bisexual women). RESULTS: Korean LGB adults exhibited a statistically significantly higher prevalence of depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation and attempts, and musculoskeletal pain than the general population. Lesbian and bisexual women had a higher risk of poor selfrated health and smoking than the general women population, whereas gay and bisexual men showed no differences with the general men population. Higher prevalence of hazardous drinking was observed among lesbians, gay men, and bisexual women compared to the general population, but was not observed in bisexual men. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that LGB adults have poorer health conditions compared to the general population in Korea. These results suggest that interventions are needed to address the health disparities of Korean LGB adults.

        Stem Cell Maintenance and Abiotic Stress Response in Shoot Apical Meristem for Developmental Plasticity

        The shoot apical meristem (SAM) serves as anon-drying reservoir of pluripotent stem cells to supply newdaughter cells forming above-ground tissues and organs suchas leaves, stems, flowers and fruits throughout the life cycleof plants. Accordingly, the homeostasis control of stem celldivision and differentiation must be an essential core mechanismfor harmonic growth and development of plants as multicellularhigher eukaryotes. Unlike animals, plants are sessile organismsand thus constantly face environmental factors, includingabiotic stresses. Therefore, post-embryonic developmentderived from stem cells in the SAM likely interacts withsurrounding abiotic stresses for plant adaptation and plasticdevelopment. For this reason, this review provides the mostrecent findings regarding comprehensive signaling networksinvolved in stem cell maintenance in the SAM, and thendescribes how stem cell signaling is related with abioticstress response through involvement of phytohormones andreactive oxygen species in the SAM.

      • 2-Stage 모터 시스템의 운전 모드 절환시 충격 완화 방법

        The 2-Stage motor system is a technology that can enhance the performance of electric vehicles by increasing the power through the use of an open-end winding motor and a dual inverter system. It helps increase the available voltage size of the motor based on the same battery voltage standard. 2-Stage refers to two driving modes, and it allows the use of closed-end winding (CEW) mode and open-end winding (OEW) mode in one motor system using a switching switch. However, when the mode is switched, the available voltage ellipse size changes rapidly by about 1.7 times. This causes a significant change in the d-axis and q-axis current commands in the control area of the Interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). As a result, torque ripple can occur in the vehicle during mode switching, which can significantly degrade vehicle speed and driving quality, and act as a factor of instability in mode switching. In this paper, variable modulation index control logic is proposed to prevent torque shock during switching. The logic was developed to prevent the rapid change in current command caused by the inverter’s available voltage difference in the CEW↔OEW switching boundary area. In this study, we proposed linear logic that can linearize the changes in the reference value of the voltage utilization ratio that determines the size of the voltage limit ellipse. It was confirmed that the available voltage change in the switching area can be linearized, and the current change, torque shock, and ripple were greatly improved. It is expected that the use of this control algorithm will alleviate the switching shock of the 2-Stage motor system, thereby improving the driving quality of the EV powertrain.

        When two particles close to each other are in electrophoretic motion, each particle is under the influence of the non-uniform electric field generated by the other particle. Two particles may attract or repel each other due to the dielectric force depending on their positions in the non-uniform electric field. It is shown analytically that two adjusting rigid particles can form an aggregate due to the dielectric interaction. To verify the validity of the theoretical prediction, an experiment is carried out by using a microchannel. In the experiment, AC electric field is used to eliminate cumbersome electroosmotic flow. The experimental result shows that the particles form a chain-like structure, which is typically observed in electro-rheological fluid, due to the dielectric interaction.

      • APR1000 노형의 노심손상빈도 결과 및 리스크 저감 활동

        가압 경수로(pressurized water reactor) APR1400 노형을 기반으로 중형 원전 APR1000을 개발 중이다. APR1000 은 2008 년에 국내 표준설계승인을 취득한 APR+노형의 피동형 보조급수계통을 포함하고 있으며, 유렵 연합 설계 인증을 획득하기 위한 인허가 심사 중이다. 유럽 연합 요건(european utility requirements; EUR)의 안전 목표는 전체 노심손상빈도(Core Damage Frequency; CDF)가 1✕10<sup>-5</sup> /ry 이하를 만족할 것을 규정하고 있다. 본 논문의 목적은 APR1000 노형의 전출력/내부사건의 리스크 프로파일을 비교, 분석하고, 리스크 기반 분석을 통하여 APR1000의 안전 목표를 달성하는 데 있다. 참조 원전에서 도출된 설계 개선 사항의 적용성을 검토하고 APR1000 노형에 반영하는 활동을 수행하였으며 리스크 저감을 도모하였다. APR1000의 PSA(probabilistic safety assessment) 모델은 SAREX 기반으로 개발되었으며 참조 원전 대비 약74.5%정도 안전성이 향상된 것으로 예비평가 되었다 Based on the APR1400 of the pressurized water reactor type, the medium-sized APR1000 is being developed. APR1000 be consist of the passive auxiliary feed water system of the APR+ which required standard design approval in 2008 by Korea regulatory body, is undergoing licensing review to require design certification of the European Union Requirements (EURs). The safety target is addressed in EURs that the total core damage frequency (CDF) should meet 1✕10<sup>-5</sup> /ry or less. The purpose of this paper is to compare and analyze risk profile of the full power and internal events for APR1000 and is to contribute to achieve safety target through risk-based activities. The applicability of the design alternatives derived from the reference plants were reviewed, and an activity was carried out to reflect it in the APR1000. Finally, risk reduction was finally achieved. The probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) model of APR1000 was developed based on SAREX, and it was preliminarily evaluated to have improved safety by about 74.5% compared to the reference plant.

      • Capacitive Control of Spontaneously Induced Electrical Charge of Droplet by Electric Field-Assisted Pipetting

        <P>The spontaneously generated electrical charge of a droplet dispensed from conventional pipetting is undesirable and unpredictable for most experiments that use pipetting. Hence, a method for controlling and removing the electrical charge needs to be developed. In this study, by using the electrode-deposited pipet tip (E-pipet tip), the charge-controlling system is newly developed and the electrical charge of a droplet is precisely controlled. The effect of electrolyte concentration and volume of the transferred solution to the electrical charge of a dispensed droplet is theoretically and experimentally investigated by using the equivalent capacitor model. Furthermore, a proof-of-concept example of the self-alignment and self-assembly of sequentially dispensed multiple droplets is demonstrated as one of the potential applications. Given that the electrical charge of the various aqueous droplets can be precisely and simply controlled, the fabricated E-pipet tip can be broadly utilized not only as a general charge-controlling platform of aqueous droplets but also as a powerful tool to explore fundamental scientific research regarding electrical charge of a droplet, such as the surface oscillation and evaporation of charged droplets.</P><P><B>Electronic supplementary material</B></P><P>The online version of this article (doi:10.1007/s40820-015-0048-2) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.</P>

      • Low-Temperature Fabrication of TiO<sub>2</sub> Electrodes for Flexible Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Using an Electrospray Process

        <P>Hierarchically structured TiO<SUB>2</SUB> (HS-TiO<SUB>2</SUB>) was prepared on a flexible ITO-PEN (polyethylene naphthalate) substrate via electrospray deposition using a commercially available TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanocrystalline powder in order to fabricate flexible DSSCs under low-temperature (<150 °C) conditions. The cell efficiency increased when using flexible ITO-PEN substrates post-treated by either a mechanical compression treatment or a chemical sintering treatment using titanium n-tetrabutoxide (TTB). The mechanical compression treatment reduced the surface area and porosity of the HS-TiO<SUB>2</SUB>; however, this treatment improved the interparticle connectivity and physical adhesion between the HS-TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and ITO-PEN substrate, which increased the photocurrent density of the as-pressed HS-TiO<SUB>2</SUB> cells. The electron diffusion coefficients of the as-pressed HS-TiO<SUB>2</SUB> improved upon compression treatment, whereas the recombination lifetimes remained unchanged. An additional chemical sintering post-treatment involving TTB was tested for its effects on DSSC efficiency. The freshly coated TiO<SUB>2</SUB> submitted to TTB hydrolysis in water at 100 °C yielded an anatase phase. TTB treatment of the HS-TiO<SUB>2</SUB> cell after compression treatment yielded faster electron diffusion, providing an efficiency of 5.57% under 100 mW cm<SUP>–2</SUP>, AM 1.5 global illumination.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2012/aamick.2012.4.issue-6/am3007164/production/images/medium/am-2012-007164_0008.gif'></P>
