Background: Hypertension is identifi ed as a risk factor for the development of polyneuropathy. We examined nerve conduction and pathology in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Methods: Motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) in sciatic-tibial nerve and sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) in sural nerve were measured. Pathological investigations include spinal cord, dorsal root ganglion, and hindlimb nerves in SHR and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) aged from 4 to 64 weeks. Results: Blood pressure was signifi cantly higher in SHR than WKY at 4 weeks and elevated further with aging. MNCV and SNCV were signifi cantly slowed in SHR when compared with WKY after 24 weeks old. Prominent nerve pathology in SHR included axonal atrophy and myelin splitting. SHR nerves revealed microangiopathy with reduplication of basement membrane. Conclusions: Sustained severe hypertension results in neuropathic processes with endoneurial microangiopathy. Hypertensive target organ damage includes the peripheral nervous system, and subjects with uncontrolled hypertension could develop neuropathy.
Control of the Ordered-Disordered State of B-site Ions in Ferroelectric Relaxor Superlattices

Relaxor type ferroelectrics are treasure boxes both for basic physics and practical applications. Among them, Ba(Zr,Ti)O3 is one of the candidate materials for elucidating the mechanism of relaxor phenomena. It has homo-valent B-site ions of Zr4+ and Ti4+. Therefore, there is no driving force to push the ions into ordered structure. On the other hand, it has a possibility of co-existence of multi phases (so-called pinching eect). In case of the bulk state, we have found that the relaxor behavior is strongly aected by the annealing conditions. To make clear the intrinsic parameter for the relaxor, we have demonstrated the articial control the positioning of the B-site ions by the superlattice technique. The stacking periodicity and the compositional combination of BaTiO3 and BaZrO3 are changed systematically with this method and the sign of the relaxor is detected.
