      • Daoist Thought through Symbols Observed in the Architecture of Tu An Hieu Nghia Pagodas and Temples from the Tri Tôn District, An Giang Province

        Daoism was introduced into the South-West of Vietnam via two main entries: the missionaries from North and Central Vietnam who migrated to the South by following the Southward movement and the spread of Daoism by Chinese migrant men who came and settled in the South-West of Vietnam from the late seventieth century to late nineteenth century. However, the biggest influence of Daoism in the Southwest of Vietnam was mainly the Chinese missionaries of Daoism. As time went by, together with the impacts of social and historical circumstances, Daoism had a strong influence on the lives of the South-West people in terms of different aspects, especially their faith and religions. The impact of Daoism into people's faith and religion was considerable, especially to the indigenous religions, of which the religion, Four Debts of Gratitude, is a representative example. With the aims of clarifying how Four Debts of Gratitude was influenced by Daoist thought and how the indigenous religions and systemized ideologies in the South-West of Vietnam were related during the period of living condition expansion as well as cohabitation of several ethnic groups in the region, this article focuses on Daoist thought expressed in typical symbols in the sacred architecture of the Four Debts of Gratitude such as Cổ Lầu, wine gourds, and the Eight Trigrams. Once properly examined, it becomes clear that the prominent symbols and other Daoist elements show that Daoism had a profound influence on the Four Debts of Gratitude.

        A Connection Entropy-based Multi-Rate Routing Protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

        This paper introduces a new approach to modeling relative distance among nodes under a variety of communication rates, due to node's mobility in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs). When mobile nodes move to another location, the relative distance of communicating nodes will directly affect the data rate of transmission. The larger the distance between two communicating nodes is, the lower the rate that they can use for transferring data will be. The connection certainty of a link also changes because a node may move closer to or farther away out of the communication range of other nodes. Therefore, the stability of a route is related to connection entropy. Taking into account these issues, this paper proposes a new routing metric for MANETs. The new metric considers both link weight and route stability based on connection entropy. The problem of determining the best route is subsequently formulated as the minimization of an object function formed as a linear combination of the link weight and the connection uncertainty of that link. The simulation results show that the proposed routing metric improves end-to-end throughput and reduces the percentage of link breakages and route reparations.

        A radiographical study on the changes in height of grafting materials after sinus lift: a comparison between two types of xenogenic materials

        Purpose: The performance of implant surgery in the posterior maxilla often poses a challenge due to insufficient available bone. Sinus floor elevation was developed to increase the needed vertical height to overcome this problem. However, grafting materials used for the sinus lift technique eventually show resorption. The present study radiographically compared and evaluated the changes in height of the grafting materials after carrying out maxillary sinus elevation with a window opening procedure. This study also evaluated the difference between two xenogenic bone materials when being used for the sinus lifting procedure. Methods: Twenty-one patients were recruited for this study and underwent a sinus lift procedure. All sites were treated with either bovine bone (Bio-$Oss^{(R)}$) with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or bovine bone (OCS-$B^{(R)}$)/PRP. A total of 69 implants were placed equally 6-8 months after the sinus lift. All sites were clinically and radiographically evaluated right after the implant surgery, 7-12 months, 13-24 months, and 25-48 months after their prosthetic loading. Results: Changes of implant length/bone length with time showed a statistically significant decreasing tendency (P<0.05). There was no significant change in the Bio-$Oss^{(R)}$ group (P>0.05). In contrast, the OCS-$B^{(R)}$ group showed a significant decrease with time (P<0.05). However, no significant difference was observed between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusions: The results showed that there was significant reduction in comparison with data right after placement, after 7 to 12 months, 13 to 24 months, and over 25 months; however, reduction rates between each period have shown to be without significance. No significant difference in height change was observed between the Bio-$Oss^{(R)}$ and the OCS-$B^{(R)}$ groups.

        Optimization of a zinc oxide urchin-like structure for high-performance gas sensing

        <p>Zinc oxide (ZnO) hollow hemisphere (HS) and urchin-like (UL) structures were fabricated and examined for application to a gas sensor. Films of hollow ZnO-HS arrays floating over substrates were synthesized <I>via</I> Zn sputtering onto the template of a polystyrene sphere array followed by oxidation. Growing ZnO nanorods upon HS surfaces <I>via</I> a hydrothermal method formed hollow ZnO–UL structures. The thicknesses of the HS films and the lengths of nanorods in the UL structures were varied to obtain the maximum response to NO gas. Both sensor structures showed a sensing of tens of parts per billion of levels of NO concentrations with good response and gas selectivity. The highest response was realized through the thinness and the open porosity of the structures.       • Urchin-like nanowire array: a strategy for high-performance ZnO-based electrode utilized in photoelectrochemistry

        <P>The electrodes in photoelectrochemical cells responsible for the generation of hydrogen and oxygen by water splitting have been intensively studied because of their high photon-to-electron conversion efficiency. The morphology of nanostructures with these high-efficiency electrodes was systematically compared with the morphology of ZnO structures with vertically aligned nanorod arrays (NA), hollow hemisphere arrays (HA), urchin-like (UL) nanorod arrays, and thin films (TF). The UV-vis light absorption, photoresponse (current-voltage characteristics in the dark and under light), and photoelectrochemistry of the electrodes were measured. The highest photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of 65% at a specific UV wavelength for an electrode with a ZnO UL structure was derived from the UL morphology of high light-trapping efficiency and carrier collection efficiency. The UL morphology also produced a photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of 4.5% under a solar simulator by CdS-sensitization of the ZnO UL electrode. The value was the highest observed thus far among the ZnO-based electrodes. We demonstrated that photoresponse measurement is a practical and simple technique for the estimation of the photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of an electrode.</P>

      • Performance Enhancement of SLFNs in Classification by Reducing Effect of Outliers

        In this paper, an approach for outlier reduction is proposed to enhance the classification performance of the single-hidden layer feed-forward neural networks (SLFNs). Outliers in the data set are detected based on the distribution on every feature, in which scores are assigned to patterns. Patterns detected as outliers based on these scores will contribute very little in estimating the weights of SLFNs. The experimental results show that, the proposed approach can obtain high accuracy with fast learning speed if there exist outliers in the training set.

      • Two-Stage Extreme Learning Machine for SLFNs in Regression

        Neural network approach has been massively used in regression problem. However, collected data for training often include outliers which affect the final results. In this paper, we propose a new approach for outlier elimination in regression based on the extreme learning machine (ELM) called two-stage ELM. Training process consists of two stages. In the first stage, the single-hidden layer feed forward neural network (SLFN) is trained based on the ELM algorithm using the whole of training set. The trained SLFN is used to verify training patterns. Patterns corresponding to the outputs exceeding a rejection threshold are removed from the training set. Finally, the remainder of training set is used to train the SLFN again based on the ELM algorithm. One interesting observation is that, our approach is simple to detect and eliminate outliers and it can be able to deliver lower error than that of the normal ELM with fast learning speed if there exist outliers in the training set.

        Design and Operation Characteristics of Novel 2-Phase 6/5 Switched Reluctance Motor

        This paper presents a design of novel 2-phase 6/5 switched reluctance motor (SRM) for an air-blower application. This type of motor is suitable for the applications that require high speed and only one directional rotation as air-blower. The desired air-blower is unidirectional application, and requires a wide positive torque region without torque dead-zone. In order to get a wide positive torque region without torque dead-zone during phase commutation, asymmetric inductance characteristic with non-uniform air-gap is considered. The proposed motor can be operated at any rotor position. The proposed 6/5 SRM uses short flux path technique that achieved by means of winding configuration and lamination geometry. The purpose of short flux path is to reduce the core loss and the absorption MMF in the stator. The proposed 2-phase 6/5 SRM is verified by finite element method (FEM) analysis and Matlab-Simulink. In order to verify the design, a prototype of the proposed motor was manufactured for practical system.
