In this study, we proposed a straightforward electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) loaded with silver nanoparticles (SNPs)membrane fabrication process, in which SNPs were directly synthesized from silver nitrate (AgNO3) in PCL–acetone mixtureby gamma irradiation. The insolubility of AgNO3in PCL solution was solved using an auxiliary dimethyl sulfoxide solvent. As a physical approach, gamma rays readily converted silver ions into SNPs without the addition of harmful reductionagents, which reduced the cytotoxicity of the synthesized material. By avoiding some processes such as purification, solventremoval, or redispersion of SNPs, this method was more time-saving compared to other related studies. SNPs formation wasconfirmed by both UV–Visible spectrum (UV–Vis) and X-ray diffraction analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)revealed that the addition of SNPs significantly reduced the fiber diameter of PCL–Ag membranes compared to that of rawPCL. Uniform spherical-shaped SNPs incorporated in PCL fibers were observed under transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The tensile test showed that the electrospun PCL–Ag membranes exhibited good mechanical characteristics. Moistureeasily penetrated the porous microstructure of PCL–Ag, facilitating wound humidity regulation. Inductively coupledplasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) was employed to study the release profiles of SNPs at different time intervals. Overall, the PCL–Ag 500 ppm sample exerted excellent antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcusaureus strains and low in vitro cytotoxicity.
Source apportionment of ambient PM2.5 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Ngoc Tran,Yusuke Fujii,Md Firoz Khan,To Thi Hien,Tran Hoang Minh,Hiroshi Okochi,Norimichi Takenaka 한국대기환경학회 2024 Asian Journal of Atmospheric Environment (AJAE) Vol.18 No.1
The emission sources of fine particulate matter ( PM2.5) have not yet been fully identified in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam, presenting difficulties to authorities in controlling air pollution efficiently. To address this issue, this study explores the source apportionment of PM2.5 by the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model and identifies potential regional sources through the weighted concentration-weighted trajectory (WCWT) model based on the field observation data of PM2.5 in HCMC. 24-h PM2.5 samples were collected in central HCMC for a year (September 2019–August 2020). Herein, inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy was used to analyze trace elements, in addition to identifying PM2.5 mass and other chemical species, such as water-soluble ions and carbonaceous species, reported in our former study. The PMF results showed that PM2.5 in HCMC was dominated by anthropogenic-rich sources comprising biomass burning, coal combustion, transportation, and crustal origins (36.4% of PM2.5 mass), followed by secondary ammonium sulfate (18.4%), sea salt (13.7%), road dust (9.6%), and coal and crude oil combustion (9.4%). WCWT results suggested that the geological sources of PM2.5 were mainly from local areas and scattered to the northeast/southwest of HCMC. In addition, the long-range transport of PM2.5 from surrounding countries was revealed during the assembly restriction and lockdown period in 2020.

Multilevel coordination-driven assembly for metallosupramolecules with hierarchical structures
Mai, Hien Duy,Tran, Ngoc Minh,Yoo, Hyojong Elsevier 2019 Coordination chemistry reviews Vol.387 No.-

Abstract

Despite recent advances toward understanding metallosupramolecular platforms, structural classification remains a challenge because of the high multiplicity and diversity originating from the variety of three-dimensional binding modes of metal ions and multifunctional ligands. In this review, multilevel coordination-driven assembly and its potential implementation in the analysis of a variety of structurally complicated metallosupramolecules are demonstrated. The classification of coordination-driven structures with their respective hierarchy levels is summarized based on the ability of each structural unit to construct ordered molecular platforms. Multilevel assembly is composed of (i) primary, (ii) secondary, (iii) tertiary, or higher-order assembly. The coordination-driven binding modes should differ by levels in a complex. In particular, tertiary assembly involves the use of predefined, well-organized secondary supramolecules as basic modules to build discrete or polymeric structures. Using the suggested concept, coordination-driven metallosupramolecular platforms can be readily classified depending on their respective hierarchical structures. We expect that this simple analytical approach will provide researchers with a more effective understanding of coordination-driven assembly and facilitate the design of new complexes for specialized applications.

Highlights

Systematic classification of metallosupramolecules based on their hierarchical level is demonstrated.

Multilevel coordination-driven assembly as an effective analysis for metallosupramolecules.

Multilevel assembly is composed of primary, secondary, tertiary, or higher-order assembly.

The simple analysis could be helpful for the design of new complexes for specific applications.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Species belonging to the Vernonia (Asteraceae), the largest genus in the tribe Vernonieae (consisting of about 1,000 species), are widely used in food and medicine. These plants are rich sources of bioactive sesquiterpene lactones and steroid saponins, likely including many as yet undiscovered chemical components. A phytochemical investigation resulted in the separation of three new stigmastane-type steroidal saponins (1 – 3), designated as vernogratiosides A–C, from whole plants of V. gratiosa. Their structures were elucidated based on infrared spectroscopy (IR), one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D NMR), high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS), and electronic circular dichroism analyses (ECD), as well as chemical reactivity. Molecular docking analysis of representative saponins with αglucosidase inhibitory activity was performed. Additionally, the intended substances were tested for their ability to inhibit α-glucosidase activity in a laboratory setting. The results suggested that stigmastane-type steroidal saponins from V. gratiosa are promising candidate antidiabetic agents.

Analysis of the CTX prophage and RS1 element in hybrid and altered Vibrio cholera O1 strains showed two classifiable groups. Group I strains contain a tandem repeat of classical CTX prophage on the small chromosome. Strains in this group either contain no element(s) or an additional CTX prophage or RS1 element(s) on the large chromosome. Group II strains harbor RS1 and CTX prophage, which has an El Tor type rstR and classical ctxB on the large chromosome.
