Investigation of Moisture Management and Frictional Characteristics of Top Layers Used in Disposable Absorbent Hygiene Products

Hande Gül Atasağun,Sukran Kara 한국섬유공학회 2022 Fibers and polymers Vol.23 No.9

Absorbent hygiene products are developed to absorb body fluids. They are designed as layered structures andinclude baby diapers, adult incontinence products, and feminine care products. Their top layers - namely cover stock andacquisition and distribution layer (ADL) - should pass the liquid quickly to the underneath layers and also distribute it on thestructure before reaching the absorbent core. Hence, the performance of the hygiene products is closely related to theinteraction between these layers. Furthermore, a wetted cover stock can lead to discomfort sensation due to the skin-productinteraction. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate both moisture management and frictional characteristics of top layers, considering their interactions. The materials used in this study are currently used in commercially available absorbenthygiene products. For the study, nine combinations were formed with cover stocks and ADLs having different structures andunit masses. The findings indicated that their physical and structural properties had substantial effects on removing liquidaway from the skin quickly and transferring it to the absorbent core. Also, the mass of ADLs was found to be effective on thefrictional behaviors of combinations. The results of this study can be used to design absorbent hygiene products that enhancewearer comfort.

Fetal programming: could intrauterin life affect health status in adulthood?

( Hande Nur Onur Öztürk ),( Perim Fatma Türker ) 대한산부인과학회 2021 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.64 No.6

Intrauterine life is one of the most important periods of life. As the development of the fetus continues, the mechanisms that affect adult health also begin to mature. With the hypothesis denoted “fetal programming,” it is thought that the presence of endocrinological disorders, toxins, infectious agents, the nutritional status of a mother, and nutrients related to placental functionality all have an effect on future life. Therefore, the fetus must adapt to the environment for survival. These adaptations may be involved the redistribution of metabolic, hormonal, or cardiac outputs in an effort to protect the brain, which is one of the important organs, as well as the slowing of growth to meet nutritional requirements. Unlike lifestyle changes or treatments received in adult life, the early developmental period tends to have a lasting effect on the structure and functionality of the body. In this review, fetal programming and the effects of fetal programming are discussed.

Do Pregnant Women’s Information Sources Affect their Attitudes toward the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test? A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study

        Hande Ya?can,Elif Uluda?,Nuran Nur Aypar Akba?,Hulya Ozberk 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2021 Asian Women Vol.37 No.2

The occurrence of gestational diabetes has increased recently. This condition, which can have extremely negative consequences for both mother and baby, can be detected by using an oral glucose tolerance test, and remedial action can be taken to prevent or reduce complications based on the results of the test. However, information about the oral glucose tolerance test (the OGTT) from different sources can negatively affect pregnant women and their families, resulting in their not taking the test. The aim of this study is to determine the knowledge and attitudes of women in the third trimester of pregnancy in relation to the OGTT. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at two university hospitals between October 2017 and June 2018. The voluntary participants comprised 303 pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy. The research data were collected using “Demographic Data Collection Form and Determination Form for the OGTT Screening Status of Pregnant Women.” The relationship between categorical variables was analyzed using chi-square tests. The percentage of pregnant women who did not have the OGTT monitoring was 32.7%. The main reasons for this were media exposure (28.6%), lack of knowledge (19.4%), and doctor’s recommendation (19.4%). Forty-three percent of the pregnant women who did not have the OGTT were not aware of why the test done and 73.3% thought that the OGTT was dangerous for the baby. Of these, 58.8% of pregnant women received the information about the OGTT from doctors and 41.2% from midwives and nurses. A significant difference was found between the OGTT status of women according to their place of residence, number of pregnancies, knowledge about why the OGTT is performed, information sources, and the belief that the test is dangerous to the health of mother and baby (p < 0.05). Not having OGTT screening during pregnancy can lead to irremediable negative complications for the health of both mother and baby.

Can Propofol Lead to an Increase in Seizure Threshold Over the Course of Electroconvulsive Therapy?

        Hande Gurbuz Aytuluk,Tahsin Simsek,Mehmet Yilmaz,Ayse Zeynep Turan,Kemal Tolga Saracoglu 대한정신약물학회 2019 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.17 No.4

Objective: To evaluate the effects of 2 different dose regimens of propofol (low dose: < 1 mg/kg, high dose: ≥ 1 mg/kg) on the duration of the seizures, the required energy for the seizures, and the seizure threshold over the course of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Methods: The electronic medical records of 165 patients receiving 971 sessions of ECT were analyzed retrospectively. Patients were evaluated in two groups according to the according to propofol doses that they had received for ECT. Group LP (n = 91): patients who received low dose propofol (< 1 mg/kg). Group HP (n = 74): patients who received high dose propofol (≥ 1 mg/kg). Results: The required energy for seizures in Group HP were significantly higher than the Group LP in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th sessions (p < 0.05). The duration of seizures in the Group HP were significantly lower than the Group LP in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 8th sessions (p < 0.05). Higher electrical stimulus was needed to acquire a minimum length of seizure (> 25 sn) during the course of ECT in higher propofol doses. Although there was an increase in the seizure threshold over the course of ECT in both groups, this increase was found to be much more pronounced in the high-dose propofol group according to the low-dose propofol group. Longer duration of seizures was observed in the low-dose propofol group. Conclusion: Higher doses of propofol in induction of anesthesia can lead to a more progressive rise in seizure threshold than lower doses of propofol.

      • Three-dimensional assessment of the temporomandibular joint and mandibular dimensions after early correction of the maxillary arch form in patients with Class II division 1 or division 2 malocclusion

        Hande Gorucu Coskuner,Semra Ciger 대한치과교정학회 2015 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.45 No.3

Objective: This study aimed to assess three-dimensional changes in the temporomandibular joint positions and mandibular dimensions after correction of dental factors restricting mandibular growth in patients with Class II division 1 or division 2 malocclusion in the pubertal growth period. Methods: This prospective clinical study included 14 patients each with Class II division 1 (group I) and Class II division 2 (group II) malocclusions. The quad-helix was used for maxillary expansion, while utility arches were used for intrusion (group I) or protrusion and intrusion (group II) of the maxillary incisors. After approximately 2 months of treatment, an adequate maxillary arch width and acceptable maxillary incisor inclination were obtained. The patients were followed for an average of 6 months. Intraoral and extraoral photographs, plaster models, and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were obtained before and after treatment. Lateral cephalometric and temporomandibular joint measurements were made from the CBCT images. Results: The mandibular dimensions increased in both groups, although mandibular positional changes were also found in group II. There were no differences in the condylar position within the mandibular fossa or the condylar dimensions. The mandibular fossa depth and condylar positions were symmetrical at treatment initiation and completion. Conclusions: Class II malocclusion can be partially corrected by achieving an ideal maxillary arch form, particularly in patients with Class II division 2 malocclusion. Restrictions of the mandible in the transverse or sagittal plane do not affect the temporomandibular joint positions in these patients because of the high adaptability of this joint.

Comparison of Antioxidant Capacities of Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P. Karst and Funalia trogii (Berk.) Bondartsev & Singer by Using Different In Vitro Methods

        Hande Yegenoglu,Belma Aslim,Feyza Oke 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.5

The aim of the study was to investigate antioxidant activities of Ganoderma lucidum and Funalia trogii. Ethanol and water crude extracts from G. lucidum and F. trogii were investigated for their antioxidant capacity in some different assays, namely, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, metal chelating activity against ferrous ions, and plasma lipid peroxidation inhibitory. In addition, the amounts of total phenol, ascorbic acid, β-carotene, and lycopene components in the extracts were determined. Among the four mushroom extracts, G. lucidum water extract and G. lucidum ethanol extract showed the highest scavenging activity against DPPH radicals (50% inhibitory concentration = 0.055 ± 0.001 mg/mL). Total phenol was the major antioxidant component found in the mushroom extracts. These results showed that G. lucidum may be used in pharmaceutical applications because of its effective antioxidant properties.

Reliability of cone-beam computed tomography for temporomandibular joint analysis

        Hande Gorucu-Coskuner,Ezgi Atik,Hakan El 대한치과교정학회 2019 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.49 No.2

Objective: The aim was to assess the intraobserver and interobserver reliabilities of temporomandibular joint linear measurements and condylar shape classifications performed with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: CBCT images of 30 patients were measured at two different time points by two orthodontists using the Dolphin 3D program (n = 60). Anterior, posterior, and superior joint space measurements and sagittal joint morphology classification in the sagittal view and medial and lateral joint space and mediolateral width measurements and coronal joint morphology classification in the coronal view were recorded. Intraclass-interclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and kappa statistics were used to assess intraobserver and interobserver reliability for the measurements and morphology classifications, respectively. Results: The ICC values were good for measurements of the posterior joint space by observer I and for measurements of the posterior, medial, and lateral joint spaces by observer II, while the other intraobserver measurements were excellent. Only the mediolateral width measurements showed excellent interobserver ICC values, while the other measurements showed good interobserver ICC values. Intraobserver agreement for the sagittal morphology classifications was moderate (k = 0.479) and almost perfect (k = 0.858) for observers I and II, respectively, while the corresponding agreement for the coronal morphology classifications was substantial for both observers. The interobserver agreement values for sagittal and coronal morphology classifications were slight (k = 0.181) and fair (k = 0.265), respectively. Conclusions: Linear temporomandibular joint measurements were reproducible and reliable in both intraobserver and interobserver evaluations. However, interobserver agreement for assessments of condylar shape was low.

Definition of Turkish Family Structure and Kinship Networks (A Sociolinguistic Approach)

Züleyha Hande Akata 고려대학교 응용문화연구소 2023 에피스테메 Vol.- No.29

The Turkish family structure is the most basic and smallest social sign of Turkish society. Within the network of relationships that starts in the nuclear family and constitutes the larger structure of society, family, and kinship networks allow inferences to be made about the society as a whole. The development of family and kinship networks in Turkish society is also reflected in the linguistic vocabulary. There are many words that define these relationships. The vocabulary constitutes concrete signs of family relations in social life on the basis of the language-society relationship. Words, which are the most concrete signs of language, have taken on an important function in the creation and transmission of the perception that is the source of the Turkish family structure. In determining and analyzing this perception, it is also possible to make a reverse reading through these words. The subject of this study is how the vocabulary and definitions related to the family structure and kinship networks of Turkish society can be interpreted from a sociolinguistic perspective. The sample of the study consists of the vocabulary and definitions of kinship networks in the Güncel Türkçe Sözlük [The Current Turkish Dictionary], which is the standard dictionary of Türkiye Turkish. On the basis of this vocabulary, indicating kinship networks, the Turkish family structure has been first be revealed at a scriptural level. Then, the semantic values of the vocabulary indicating kinship networks according to family structure, gender, generation and age, blood and marriage, types of language, and language contacts have been determined. The social roles attributed to the individual according to this signification have been evaluated by taking into account the theories and methods of sociolinguistics. The aim of this study is to define the Turkish family structure and to analyze the perception of family in Turkish society by considering language-society relations.

Can Cochlear Nerve Size Assessment With Magnetic Resonance Enhance the Understanding of Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss?

        Arslan Hande,Özdemir Meltem,Kavak Rasime Pelin,Keseroğlu Kemal,Mutlu Murad,Korkmaz Mehmet Hakan 대한청각학회 2024 Journal of Audiology & Otology Vol.28 No.1

Background and Objectives: Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL) is a rapid loss of hearing, exceeding 30 dB in at least 3 consecutive frequencies within 3 days, without any identifiable cause despite thorough investigations. Currently, the etiology and pathogenesis of ISSHL have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to assess the size of the cochlear nerve in patients with ISSHL and explore its relationship with pretreatment audiograms and treatment response.Subjects and Methods: A total of 125 patients (59 [47.2%] women; mean age 47.7±13.8 years [minimum-maximum: 21-76]) and 60 healthy participants (27 [45%] women; mean age 45.7±16.8 years [minimum-maximum: 20-76]) as a control group were included in this study. The size of the cochlear nerve was assessed on the affected side, compared to the control group, as well as on the unaffected side. Pretreatment and posttreatment audiological values were also analyzed. Results: The cross-sectional area (CSA), vertical diameter (VD), and horizontal diameter (HD) of the CN were found to be smaller on the affected side of ISSHL patients compared to the control group (p<0.01; p=0.04; p=0.02, respectively). In the study group (affected side of ISSHL patients), there were no significant differences in VD, HD, and CSA values between pretreatment audiogram types (p=0.23; p=0.53; p=0.39, respectively), and initial hearing levels (p=0.16; p=0.22; p=0.23, respectively). Furthermore, there were no significant differences in VD, HD, and CSA values between the recovery groups according to Furuhashi criteria (p=0.18; p=0.37; p=0.27, respectively). Conclusions: The size of the CN may be a risk factor for ISSHL, but it does not affect the type of audiogram curves and was not prognostic in terms of treatment response.
