The Relations between Enuresis in Childhood and Nocturnal Polyuria Syndrome in Adult Life

        Halil Ciftci,Murat Savas,Adem Altunkol,Halil Öncel,ErcanYeni,AyhanVerit 대한배뇨장애요실금학회 2012 International Neurourology Journal Vol.16 No.1

Purpose: The aim of this study, to investigate whether there is any association between enuresis in childhood and nocturnal polyuria syndrome (NPS) in adult life. Methods: The study consisted of thirty five patients with nocturnal polyuria, and thirty five healthy people without nocturnal polyuria in adult life, were asked to assess their enuresis in childhood. Results: There was a history of enuresis in childhood in 18 (51.42%) of 35 of men with nocturnal polyuria and in 4 (11.42%) of 35 without nocturnal polyuria. Enuresis in childhood was significantly more common in men with nocturnal polyuria than without nocturnal polyuria. The difference was significant (P<0.0001). The prevalence of enuresis in the nocturnal polyuria (51.42%) was more than two-fold higher than reported prevalence in general populations. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the history of enuresis in childhood seems to increase the risk of having NPS in adult life. This relationship should be taken into account in the evaluation of men with complaints from NPS in adult life and the possible common pathophysiology should be considered in the treatment planning.

The stability of semi-rigid skeletal structures accounting for shear deformations

Halil Gorgun 국제구조공학회 2016 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.57 No.6

The analysis and design of skeletal structures is greatly influenced by the behaviour of beamto- column connections, where patented designs have led to a wide range of types with differing structural quantities. The behaviour of beam-to-column connections plays an important role in the analysis and design of framed structures. This paper presents an overview of the influence of connection behaviour on structural stability, in the in-plane (bending) mode of sway. A computer-based method is presented for geometrically nonlinear plane frames with semi-rigid connections accounting for shear deformations. The analytical procedure employs transcendental modified stability functions to model the effect of axial force on the stiffness of members. The member stiffness matrix were found. The critical load has been searched as a suitable load parameter for the loss of stability of the system. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the validity of the analysis procedure. The method is readily implemented on a computer using matrix structural analysis techniques and is applicable for the efficient nonlinear analysis of frameworks. Combined with a parametric column effective length study, connection and frame stiffness are used to propose a method for the analysis of semi-rigid frames where column effective lengths are greatly reduced and second order (deflection induced) bending moments in the column may be distributed via the connectors to the beams, leading to significant economies.

An Attitude Filtering and Magnetometer Calibration Approach for Nanosatellites

Halil Ersin Söken 한국항공우주학회 2018 International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sc Vol.19 No.1

We propose an attitude filtering and magnetometer calibration approach for nanosatellites. Measurements from magnetometers, Sun sensor and gyros are used in the filtering algorithm to estimate the attitude of the satellite together with the bias terms for the gyros and magnetometers. In the traditional approach for the attitude filtering, the attitude sensor measurements are used in the filter with a nonlinear vector measurement model. In the proposed algorithm, the TRIAD algorithm is used in conjunction with the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) to form the nontraditional attitude filter. First the vector measurements from the magnetometer and Sun sensor are processed with the TRIAD algorithm to obtain a coarse attitude estimate for the spacecraft. In the second phase the estimated coarse attitude is used as quaternion measurements for the UKF. The UKF estimates the fine attitude, and the gyro and magnetometer biases. We evaluate the algorithm for a hypothetical nanosatellite by numerical simulations. The results show that the attitude of the satellite can be estimated with an accuracy better than 0.5◦ and the computational load decreases more than 25% compared to a traditional UKF algorithm. We discuss the algorithm’s performance in case of a time-variance in the magnetometer errors.

Thermal decomposition kinetics of sodium perborate tetrahydrate to sodium metaborate by using model-fitting and model-free methods

Halil Demir 한국화학공학회 2011 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.28 No.10

Model-free and model-fitting methods have been applied to data for nonisothermal and isothermal decomposition of sodium perborate tetrahydrate to sodium metaborate. The kinetic triplet (f(a), A and E) of sodium perborate tetrahydrate was found by model fitting method defined with a single step reaction, which has an excellent fit for nonisothermal data and obeys different kinetic models and yields highly uncertain values of Arrhenius parameters. The isothermal and nonisothermal data for thermal decomposition of sodium perborate tetrahydrate to sodium perborate monohydrate and sodium metaborate were evaluated by model-free isoconversional method. The complex nature of multi-step process of sodium perborate tetrahydrate to sodium metaborate was more easily indicated by using wide temperature range in nonisothermal isoconversional method.

Performance of the predator Amblyseius swirskii (Acari: Phytoseiidae) on greenhouse eggplants in the absence and presence of pine Pinus brutia (Pinales:Pinaceae) pollen

Halil Kutuk 한국곤충학회 2017 Entomological Research Vol.47 No.4

In Turkey, the western thrips Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) is a key pest affecting eggplants grown in greenhouses for which an appropriate control strategy is under investigation. It was observed in a previous study that the release of the beneficial predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii (Athias‐Henriot) alone did not result in an effective control of thrips on eggplants. Since pollen is known to improve control efficiency of predators, this study was undertaken to investigate if provision of pollen to eggplants can greatly improve the efficiency of A. swirskii in controlling thrips. The experiments were carried out in both greenhouse and low tunnel. The provision of pollen led to a significant increase in the predator population density on the eggplants but did not result in an effective control of the thrips populations. In this paper, various factors are discussed that could have affected the efficiency of the predatory mite in controlling F. occidentalis on eggplants.

Temporal Investigations of the Changes in Presynaptic Inhibition Associated With Subthalamic Nucleus Deep-Brain Stimulation

        Halil Onder,Bektas Korkmaz,Selcuk Comoglu 대한신경과학회 2023 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.19 No.6

Background and Purpose There are controversies regarding the role of presynaptic inhibition (PSI) in the mechanisms underlying the efficacy of deep-brain stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson’s disease (PD). We sought to determine the involvement of PSI in DBS-related mechanisms and clinical correlates. Methods We enrolled PD subjects who had received subthalamic nucleus DBS (STN-DBS) therapy and had been admitted to our clinic between January 2022 and March 2022. The tibial H-reflex was studied bilaterally during the medication-off state, and all tests were repeated 10 and 20 minutes after the simulation was turned off. Simultaneous evaluations based on the Movement-Disorder-Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale part III (MDS-UPDRS-III) were performed in all of the patients. Results Ultimately we enrolled 18 patients aged 58.7±9.3 years (mean±standard deviation, 10 females). Fifty percent of the patients showed a decrease in the MDS-UPDRS-III score of more than 60% during the stimulation-on period. Comparative analyses of the repeated measurements made according to the stimulation status revealed significant differences only in the left H-reflex/M-response amplitude ratio (H/M ratio). However, no difference in the left H/M ratio was found in the subgroup of patients with a prominent clinical response to stimulation (n=9). Analyses of the less-affected side revealed differences in the H-reflex amplitude and H/M ratio. Conclusions We found evidence of PSI recovery on the less-affected side of our PD subjects associated with STN-DBS. We hypothesize that the involvement of this spinal pathway and its contribution to the mechanisms of DBS differ between individuals based on the severity of the disease and which brainstem regions and descending tracts are involved.

An experimental study of the behaviour of double sided welded plate connections in precast concrete frames

Halil Görgün 국제구조공학회 2018 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.29 No.1

Multi-storey precast concrete skeletal structures are assembled from individual prefabricated components which are erected on-site using various types of connections. In the current design of these structures, beam-to-column connections are assumed to be pin jointed. Welded plate beam to-column connections have been used in the precast concrete industry for many years. They have many advantages over other jointing methods in component production, quality control, transportation and assembly. However, there is at present limited information concerning their detailed structural behaviour under bending and shear loadings. The experimental work has involved the determination of moment-rotation relationships for semi-rigid precast concrete connections in full scale connection tests. The study reported in this paper was undertaken to clarify the behaviour of such connections under symmetrical vertical loadings. A series of full-scale tests was performed on sample column for which the column geometry and weld arrangements conformed with successful commercial practice. Proprietary hollow core slabs were tied to the beams by tensile reinforcing bars, which also provide the in-plane continuity across the connections. The strength of the connections in the double sided tests was at least 0.84 times the predicted moment of resistance of the composite beam and slab. The secant stiffness of the connections ranged from 0.7 to 3.9 times the flexural stiffness of the attached beam. When the connections were tested without the floor slabs and tie steel, the reduced strength and stiffness were approximately a third and half respectively. This remarkable contribution of the floor strength and stiffness to the flexural capacity of the joint is currently neglected in the design process for precast concrete frames. In general, the double sided connections were found to be more suited to a semi-rigid design approach than the single sided ones. The behaviour of double sided welded plate connection test results are presented in this paper. The behaviour of single sided welded plate connection test results is the subject of another paper.

      • UKF Based On-Orbit Gyro and Magnetometer Bias Estimation as a part of the Attitude Determination Procedure for a Small Satellite

Halil Ersin Soken,Shin-ichiro Sakai 제어로봇시스템학회 2011 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2011 No.10

In this study an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) based magnetometer and gyro bias estimation algorithm is presented as a part of the attitude determination procedure for a small satellite, which has three magnetometers and three gyros as measurement sensors. Differently from the existing studies both magnetometer and gyro biases are estimated as well as the attitude parameters. Kinematics of the satellite is modeled via using quaternion parameterization. In order to enable estimation of all parameters simultaneously without a high computational cost, two methods known in advance are used. First, quaternion based modeling constraint that is met because of the unit norm of quaternion is overrun by enforcing constraint as a dummy measurement through the measurement model, instead of employing three-element error quaternion state as attitude representation. Second, in filter formulations gyro-based model is used for attitude propagation. Validity of the proposed method is confirmed by simulations.
