        Biodegradable retinal fixation devices obtain mechnical fixation of the retina with desirable chorioretinal scarring and with the potential for local, sustained release of antimetabolites and steroids to inhibit proliferative vitreoretinopathy. We manufactured a biodegradable retinal tack with barb that was designed in order to prevent intrusion from implantation of retinal tacks. This study was carried to evaluate the efficacy for retinal fixation and the capability for sustained release of drugs with a newly designed biodegradable retinal tack Biodegradable retinal tacks were made of polymers of glycolic acids and were designed with barbs in a shape to prevent the disinsertion. Biodegradale retinal tacks are divided into 3 parts, a conical portion that is inserted into the sclera, a cylinder portion that remains in the vitreous, and a neck portion between the pin and the cylinder. The tapered conical end was manufactured to allow easy insertion through the retina and choroid into the sclera. A cylinder portion was manufactured with a tapered angle that fixes firmly into the orifice of 19 gauge spinal needle. A neck portion, 0.4 mm in diameter, was designed to prevent disinsertion from following implantation of retinal tack. The applicator was a 19 gauge spinal needle and its orifice was prepared to 15°angle to accept the tapered cylinder portion of the retinal tack. The retinal tacks, secured in the needles, were passed through the formed vitreous and inserted into the retina, choroid, and sclera and were released by pushing the internal needle, usually within 2-3mm of the medullary ray of the posterior rabbit retina A retinal tack was placed in each of 8 pigmented rabbit eyes. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy and fundus photography were performed periodically from 1 day to 8 weeks after surgery. Eight eyes were enucleated and studied by light microscopy at 8 weeks. Biomicroscopic evaluation of the animals revealed edemas adjacent to the retinal surfaces immediately after insertion of the biodegradable retinal tacks in all the animals. These edemas disappeared after 1 week. The first noticeable change in the size of retinal tacks was shown after 2weeks. The size of the retinal tacks gradually got smaller, decreasing to about one-half at 4 weeks and about one-third at 8 weeks. All retinal tacks remained in inserted places without any movement for an 8 week period. On light microscopy, epiretinal proliferations were seen to extend into the vitreous cavity. Cellular capsules that lined the inner aspect of the scleral defect caused by tack insertion were found. However the adjacent retina had a normal cytologic appearance and architecture in all specimens. We manufactured a biodegradable retinal tack that is designed to prevent intrusion from implantation of retinal tacks. All biodegradable retinal tacks reduce in size with time, but no retinal tacks extruded from the inserted place. The newly designed biodegradable retinal tack can be used for retinal fixation and may be used as a vehicle for the introduction of pharmacologic agents to prevent the cellular events that promote proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

        A new device, muscle clamping system was developed to facilitate exact quatifying technique A strabismus surgery, and reduce the risk of complications. The device is composed of a lower fixing body with three jaws and an upper supporting body. They are used to clip an extraocular muscle and fix it to the sclera with a single bite. Superior rectus recession on 16 rabbit eyes were performed with this new device. Conjunctival injection, muscle adhesion strength, and light microscopic findings were examined at 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks postoperatively. The Conjunctival injection were minimal, adhesion power ranged from 420 to 600 gram gravity, which is sufficient in withstand the normal pull of human extraocular muscle. In microscopic exam, some Inflammatory cells and fibrosis were found. The new device was technically easy, fast, and accurate, so it may be useful in stabismus surgery.

        The Effect of pH and Various Cations on the GTP Hydrolysis of Rice Heterotrimeric G-protein α Subunit Expressed in Escherichia Coli

        Previously, we reported the biochemical properties of RGAl that is expressed in Escherichia coli(Seo et al., 1997). The activities of RGAl that hydrolyzes and binds guanine nucleotide were dependent on the MgCl_(2) concentration. The steady state rate constant (k_(cat)) for GTP hydrolysis of RGAl at 2 mM MgCl_(2) was 0.0075±0.0001 min^(-1). Here, we examined the effects of pH and cations on the GTPase activity. The optimum pH at 2mM MgCl_(2) was approximately 6.0; whereas, the pH at 2 mM NH_(4)Cl was approximately 4.0. The result from the cation dependence on the GTPase (guanosine 5`-triphosphatase) activity of RGAl under the same condition showed that the GTP hydrolysis rate (k_(cat)=0.0353 min^(-1)) under the condition of 2mM NH_(4)Cl at pH 4.0 was the highest. It corresponded to about 3.24-fold of the k_(cat) value of 0.0109 min^(-1) in the presence of 2mM MgCl_(2) at pH 6.0.

      • Effects of electroacupuncture on oxaliplatin-induced neuropathic cold hypersensitivity in rats

        This study investigated whether and how electroacupuncture (EA) attenuates cold hypersensitivity (allodynia) in a rat model of oxaliplatin-induced neuropathic pain. Cold allodynia [evaluated by immersing the tail into cold water (4 A degrees C) and measuring the withdrawal latency] was induced 3 days after an oxaliplatin administration (6 mg/kg, i.p.). EA stimulation (2/100 Hz, 0.3-ms pulse duration, 0.2-0.3 mA) was delivered to ST36 acupoint or non-acupoint for 20 min. Low-frequency (2 Hz) EA at ST36 relieved cold allodynia more effectively than high-frequency EA at ST36 or low-frequency EA at non-acupoint. Naloxone (opioid antagonist, 2 mg/kg, i.p.) completely blocked such EA-induced anti-allodynia, whereas phentolamine (alpha-adrenergic antagonist, 2 mg/kg, i.p.) did not. Moreover, plasma beta-endorphin levels significantly increased right after the end of EA and subsequently decreased. These results indicate that low-frequency EA at ST36 in rats has a marked relieving effect on oxaliplatin-induced cold allodynia that is mediated by the endogenous opioid, but not noradrenergic, system.

        남북 통일정책의 특성 비교: 해방이후 이승만,김일성의 "자주와 국가"를 중심으로

        남북한은 분단된 지 70년이 되었다. 그동안 남북한 통일정책은 냉전과 탈냉전의 국제정세와 남북한 ‘힘(국력)’의 변화에 영향을 받았다. 남북한은 민족주의적 사고에 기반하여 체제 대결과 체제 경쟁을 했다. 특히, 국가건설형성자였던 이승만과 김일성은 ‘북진통일론’과 ‘민주기지론’에 의해 민족해방 또는 인민해방을 시킨다면서 상호 적대·대결·배제하면서 무력통일을 시도하였다. 남북통일은 ‘힘(국력)’에 기반한다. 남북이 통일을 주도하기 위해서는 정치, 경제, 사회문화적인 발전과 상대적인 우월성을 갖추어야 한다. 통일을 위한 국가 지도자의 강력한 의지는 절대적인 추진체다. 해방이후 이승만과 김일성은 모두 민족독립과 민족해방을 위해서는 무력을 통해서라도 통일을 이루겠다고 생각했으며, 실제로 외세에 의존하면서까지 무력을 통한 통일을 시도하였다. 본 연구는 해방이후부터 1950년대까지의 남북한 통일정책의 특성을 비교함으로써 국제정세와 ‘힘(국력)’과의 상관관계를 찾으려는 것이다. 당시의 남북한 통일정책은 냉전시대의 국제정세와 ‘힘(국력)’에 영향을 받음으로써 ‘자주성과 국가우선’을 지향하였다. 남북한은 ‘자주와 국가’를 강조함으로써 결국 무력충돌까지 하였다. 평화적 통일을 위해서는 ‘국가’보다는 ‘민족’을 강조하고 ‘자주와 국제’의 균형적인 추진과 지향이 필요할 것이다. 그리고 ‘힘(국력)’이 월등한 남한이 통일정책을 일관성, 지속성있게 선도하는 것이 필요할 것이다. In particular, the country``s former President Kim Il-Song and Lee Seung-man and construction of the formatter``s northward unification and ``democracy by Local area`` national liberation or if the people``s Liberation, while armed forces ruled out hostile and in attempts to unify the Christian confrontation. Two Koreas`` unification is based on the power. Two Koreas led in order to unify the political, economic, social cultural development and should be the relative superiority. A national leader``s strong commitment for the unity of the absolute projectiles. After the liberation of all peoples, Kim-Lee were thought national liberation, unification of the armed forces had, in fact, dependent on foreign powers to try to unify through the armed forces. Therefore, in this study, since the unification of Two Koreas, up to the 1950s, the emancipation policy attributes are compared. At the time of the unification of Two Koreas policy during the cold war era, the international situation has an impact on the power by [national] national priority`` frequent performance-oriented. North and South Korea ended up by emphasizing the country``s self-determination and until the end of the armed conflict. In order for a ``peaceful reunification of the country`` rather than ``nationalism`` to emphasize that a balanced evolution of the internationalism and often will be needed. And superior power South Korea unification [national]`` policy coherence, sustainability, it will be necessary to leading.

        Idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome is characterized by marked elevation of eosinophil count ( >1,500/㎣) in peripheral blood without explaining etiology. It shows tissue involvement in many organs such as liver, G-I tract, myocar dium, lung, skin, kidney and nerve. Some case of hypereosinophilic syndrome with hepatic involvement have been reported, but not much. We have recently experienced a case with idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome of a 40 year old man who presented with RUQ pain. By abdominal CT, ill- defined subcapsular hematoma was detected. Liver biopsy showed eosinophilic infiltration within the portal tract and sinusoid. Drain procedure and corticosteroid adminiiatbrought marked improvement of clinical manifestation, hematologic abnormality and radiologic abnormality.

        젖산이 골격근세포 내 마이오카인 발현에 미치는 영향

        PURPOSE: During high intense exercise, the level of lactic acid (LA) increases over 10 mM, and LA has functions as an intermediate for muscular energy metabolism. However, the effects of LA on the level of myokines remain largely unknown. Aims of this study were to evaluate whether LA regulates the expression of myokines in C2C12 myotubes and to explore the regulatory mechanisms. METHODS: As a number of studies reported that intense exercise induced accumulation of 4-20 mM LA in blood, C2C12 myotubes were treated with LA of 0, 4 or 16 mM for 0.5, 1 or 4 hr. We measured mRNA and protein levels of myostatin (Mstn), and fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5) using real-time PCR or western blot, respectively. RESULTS: LA reduced the levels of both mRNA and protein of Mstn from 4 hr after treatment. The level of FNDC5 mRNA was increased by LA within 1 hr, which returned to the basal level at 4 hr. but not increased the expression of FNDC5 protein levels. The levels of phosphorylated 5-AMP activated protein kinase (p-AMPKThr172) show an increasing trend but its target phosphorylated acetyl-CoA carboxylase at Ser79 (p-ACCser79) was increased by LA within 30 min. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated the regulatory effect of LA on myokine expression, indicating that LA may be a metabolic factor contributing to secretory functions of skeletal muscle during high intensity physical exercise. In addition, LA accumulation at early time of physical exercise may influence on the signaling of intracellular energy metabolism, although further studies are needed to confirm our hypotheses.
