Estrogen is believed to decrease coronary artery disease. Protein kinase C-α(PKCα)appear to be important in signal conduction pathways. Estrogen treatment increases catalytic activity of PKCα,and activation of PKCαcan modulate estrogen receptor levels and responsiveness. And it was reported that activation of PKC can protect cells from apoptosis induced by Fas ligation. But the beneficial effect of estrogen on PKCαwas not clearly demonstrated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of PKCαafter ovariectomy and estrogen therapy in rat aorta. The results were summarized as below: 1. The significant pathological changes were not observed in the rat aorta irrelevant to ovariectomy and estrogen therapy. 2. The expression of Fas was decreased in the aorta of estrogen-treated rats than that of ovariectomized rats without estrogen therapy. 3. Increased expression of PKCαwas more marked in the aprta of estrogen-treated rats than that of ovariectomized rat without estrogen therapy. In conclusion,PKCαmay be important in signal conduation pathway on the effect of estrogen. Activation of PKCαby estrogen reduced Fas expression, suggesting that PKCαactivation may play a role in protection against atherasclerosis. Further studies are needed to elucidate the role of PKCαafter estrogen therapy.
ALKBH5 gene is a novel biomarker that predicts the prognosis of pancreatic cancer

Backgrounds/Aims: Discovery of new prognostic factors for cases in which the pancreatic cancer scoring and staging system does not result in a clear definition is imperative. We examined the role of Human AlkB homolog H5 (ALKBH5) as a prognostic marker for pancreatic cancer. Methods: Patient data were extracted from the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). The prognostic value of ALKBH5 was confirmed via analysis of ALKBH5 and other clinical factors, such as age, sex, and stage, using the time-dependent area under the curve (AUC) of Unos C-index, the AUC value of the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) at three years, the Kaplan-Meier survival curve, and multivariate analysis. Results: ALKBH5 showed excellent prognosis prediction in comparison with existing markers in the two independent cohorts (n=262). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that ALKBH5 expression was positively associated with overall survival (log-rank test, ICGC, p=0.001; TCGA, p=0.01). Notably, comparison of C-index and AUC values in ROC analysis showed that ALKBH5 was associated with high C-index and AUC values compared with other clinical variables (C-index: ICGC, 0.621; TCGA, 0.614 and AUC at three years: ICGC, 0.609; TCGA, 0.558). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that ALKBH5 is an independent prognostic factor (ICGC, p=0.0123; TCGA, p<0.001). Conclusions: These findings contribute to the study of RNA methylation in pancreatic cancer. We believe that ALKBH5 is a new prognostic marker for pancreatic cancer.

목적: 과산화수소는 산화적 스트레스를 통해 아폽토시스를 유도하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 논문에서는 과산화수소로 유발된 신경아세포종 아폽토시스 과정에서 호도약침액의 효과를 관찰하였다. 방법: 과산화수소로 인한 신경아세포종의 아폽토시스에서 호도약침액 의 효과를 알아보기 위해 배양중인 신경아세포종에 과산화수소를 처리하고, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) 분석법, 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) 염색법, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), western blotting의 방법으로 확인하였다. 결과: 과산화수소로 인한 신경아세포종의 아폽토시스에서 호도약침액을 처리한 결과, 약침액을 처리한 세포의 생존이 약 30% 정도 증가하고, 핵 응축과 단편화를 막아주며, CASP3와 BAX단백질의 발현이 감소되었다. 결론: 이러한 결과로 호도약침액이 과산화수소로 인한 신경아세포종의 아폽토시스과정에서 보호효과를 나타내는 것으로 사료된다.
The calmodulin-binding transcription factor OsCBT suppresses defense responses to pathogens in rice

<P>We previously isolated the OsCBT gene, which encodes a calmodulin (CaM)-binding protein, from a rice expression library constructed from fungal elicitor-treated rice suspension cells. In order to understand the function of OsCBT in rice, we isolated and characterized a T-DNA insertion mutant allele named oscbt-1. The oscbt-1 mutant exhibits reduced levels of OsCBT transcripts and no significant morphological changes compared to wild-type plant although the growth of the mutant is stunted. However, oscbt-1 mutants showed significant resistance to two major rice pathogens. The growth of the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea, as well as the bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae was significantly suppressed in oscbt-1 plants. Histochemical analysis indicated that the hypersensitive-response was induced in the oscbt-1 mutant in response to compatible strains of fungal pathogens. OsCBT expression was induced upon challenge with fungal elicitor. We also observed significant increase in the level of pathogenesis-related genes in the oscbt-1 mutant even under pathogen-free condition. Taken together, the results support an idea that OsCBT might act as a negative regulator on plant defense.</P>
국내산 마른 김 (Porphyra)의 생리활성 및 아미노산 조성 비교

The physiological activities and amino acid compositions of dried layers of Porphyra from the Jangheung, Seochen and Haenam coasts were determined, The ethanol extract of the Haenam dried layer exhibited the greatest I , 1 -diphenyl2-picryihydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (56.1%), ferric-reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) value(86.5mM) and total polyphenol content (3.51 ppm) of these dried layer products. In addition, there was a strong positive correlation between the antioxidative activity and total polyphenol content of the layer products, suggesting that polyphenol compounds contribute to the antioxidant capacity in the ethanol extract of dried layer. However, there was no difference among the extracts in terms of cell proliferation activity. Fourteen combined amino acids were identified in oligopeptides from the dried layer products. Of the three extracts, that of the Haenam dried layer contained the highest levels of both free and total amino acids including alanine, glutamic acid, taurine, phosphoserine, and aspartic acid.
