        Modeling of fiber pullout behaviors of stiff fiber reinforced cementitious composites

        This paper presents numerical studies of stiff fiber pullout behaviors of fiber reinforced cementitious composites based on a progressive damage model. The ongoing debonding process is simulated. Interfacial stress distribution for different load levels is analyzed. A parametric study, including bond strength and the homogeneity index on the pullout behaviors is carried out. The numerical results indicate that the bond stress decreases gradually from loaded end to embedded end along fiber-cement interface. The debonding initially starts from loaded end and propagates to embedded end as load increasing. The embedded length and bond strength affect the load-loaded end displacement curves significantly. The numerical results have a general agreement with the experimental investigation.

        Percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: A safe and effective technique

        Background: Percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy (PRG) was considered as an alternative technique for long-term enteral nutrition, and the current study is aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of this technique in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at a single medical center. Methods: From July 2017 to October 2020, a total of 14 patients underwent PRG with ALS were included in this retrospective study with a median age of 64.0 years, and 78.6% were male. The procedure comprised a dilation of the stomach via a nasogastric catheter, followed by puncture and gastrostomy tube placement under fluoroscopic guidance. The technical success rate and clinical outcomes were recorded over 3 months following the procedure. Results: The technical success rate was 100%. During the follow-up period, minor complications were reported in 2 of patients (14.3%) including superficial skin infection and early tube block. Neither major complications nor mortality were observed. Body mass index of the patients increased significantly from 16.4 ± 2.1 kg/m2 to 17.1 ± 2.0 kg/m2 (t = –13.77; P < 0.001), and the albumin level increased significantly from 37.5 ± 2.3 g/L to 41.8 ± 1.6 g/L (t = –8.82, P < 0.001). Conclusion: PRG is a relatively safe and effective method for ALS patients, and deserves widespread clinical acceptance.

      • A Novel Monoclonal Antibody Induces Cancer Cell Apoptosis and Enhances the Activity of Chemotherapeutic Drugs

        A novel monoclonal antibody (mAb), known as AC10364, was identified from an antibody library generated by immunization of mice with human carcinoma cells. The mAb recognized proteins in lysates from multiple carcinoma cell lines. Cell cytotoxicity assays showed that AC10364 significantly inhibited cell growth and induced apoptosis in multiple carcinoma cell lines, including Bel/fu, KATO-III and A2780. Compared with mAb AC10364 or chemotherapeutic drugs alone, the combination of mAb AC10364 with chemotherapeutic drugs demonstrated enhanced growth inhibitory effects on carcinoma cells. These results suggest that mAb AC10364 is a promising candidate for cancer therapy.

        Endophytic Fungi Diversity of Aquatic/Riparian Plants and Their Antifungal Activity In Vitro

        Two hundred and fourteen endophytic fungi were isolated from 500 segments of aquatic/riparian plants Ottelia acuminata, Myriophyllum verticillatum, Equisetum arvense, Cardamine multijuga, and Impatiens chinensis. They were identified to 31 taxa in which Cladosporium, Fusarium, and Geotrichum were the dominant genera. Among all isolates, 169 (79%) were anamorphic fungi, 1 (0.5%) was an teleomorphic ascomycete and 44 (21%)were sterile mycelia. There were significant differences in the colonization frequency of endophytes between the five plant species (X~2=51.128, P<0.001, Chi-square test). The riparian plants harboured more endophytes than the submerged plants. The antifungal activity of these isolates against Fusarium solani and Phytophthora nicotianae in vitro were tested and 28 (13.1%) isolates showed antifungal activities with more than 30% growth inhibition rate against the two pathogens.

      • Asiatic Acid Promotes p21<sup>WAF1/CIP1</sup> Protein Stability through Attenuation of NDR1/2 Dependent Phosphorylation of p21<sup>WAF1/CIP1</sup> in HepG2 Human Hepatoma Cells

        Previous studies have suggested anti-tumor effects of asiatic acid in some human cancer cell lines. This agent is reported to increase the levels of $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$ in human breast cancer cell lines. However, the molecular mechanisms have not been established. Here we report that asiatic acid up-regulates $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$ protein expression but not the level of $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$ mRNA in HepG2 human hepatoma cells. Furthermore, we found that the asiatic acid induced increase of $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$ protein was associated with decreased phosphorylation (ser-146) of $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$. Knockdown of NDR1/2 kinase, which directly phosphorylates $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$ protein at ser-146 and enhances its proteasomal degradation, increased the levels of $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$ protein and eliminated the regulation of $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$ stability by asiatic acid. At the same time, the expression of NDR1/2 kinase decreased during treatment with asiatic acid in HepG2 cells. Moreover, asiatic acid inhibited the proliferation of HepG2 cells, this being attenuated by knockdown of $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$. In conclusion, we propose that asiatic acid inhibits the expression NDR1/2 kinase and promotes the stability of $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$ protein through attenuating NDR1/2 dependent phosphorylation of $p21^{WAF1/CIP1}$ in HepG2 cells.

        Fishbone Oscillations in the Experimental Advanced Superconductivity Tokamak

        A fishbone oscillation was observed in the neutral beam injection plasma at Experimental Ad- vanced Superconductivity Tokamak (EAST). This m = 1/n = 1 (m, n: poloidal, toroidal mode numbers, respectively) typical internal kink mode travels in the ion-diamagnetism direction in the poloidal section with a rotation speed close to the ion diamagnetic drift frequency. A high thermal plasma beta and high amounts of energetic ions are necessary for the mode to develop. Fishbone oscillations can expel heavy impurities in the core, which favors sustaining a high-performance plasma. The born frequency of the fishbone oscillation is the ion diamagnetic drift frequency and the chirping down of the frequency during the initial growth phase is the result of a drop in ion- diamagnetic drift frequency. The excitation energy is thought to be due to the thermal plasma pressure gradient; however, the development of a fishbone oscillation is related to energetic ions.         Ce3+ triggers fenton-like processes in neutral solutions for effective catechol degradation

        Classical Fenton and Fenton-like processes destruct organic pollutants in water non-selectively to complete mineralization. However, the usage of classical Fenton or Fenton-like processes is often limited due to the narrow operational pH window, sludge accumulation, inefficient H₂O₂ and efficiency decline. To overcome these constraints, in this study, we used a homogeneous Fe<SUP>3+</SUP>-Ce<SUP>3+</SUP>-H₂O₂ Fenton-like process to degrade catechol at different experimental conditions. At pH 7, almost 97% of 10 mM catechol can be destructed within 60 min while the degradation by Classical Fenton or Fe<SUP>3+</SUP>-H₂O₂ Fenton-like process only 36.2% and 23.7%. The resultant solution after the degradation contains only traces of cerium ions. The sludge created by the process was extensively characterized by FTIR and XPS spectroscopy to elucidate the fate of cerium ions. Electron spin resonance (ESR) data confirmed •OH as the major free radical in Fe<SUP>3+</SUP>-Ce<SUP>3+</SUP>-H₂O₂ process. Our Fenton-like process widens the optimal pH values to neutral condition.

      • A framework for fast estimation of structural seismic responses using ensemble machine learning model

        While recognized as most rigorous procedure leading to 'exact' structural seismic responses, nonlinear time history analysis is usually time consuming and computational demanding, especially when numerous structures remain to be analyzed. This paper proposes a framework to improve the time efficiency in evaluating the structural seismic demands, using ensemble machine learning models based on 'classification-regression' philosophy. Typical tall pier bridges widely located in southwest China are employed as illustrative examples to validate the efficiency and performance of this proposed framework. The results and discussion show that with properly selected input variables, the proposed ensemble model (ORF-ANN herein) performs better in predicting seismic demands than other single learning algorithms (i.e., ANN and ORF), while the time efficiency is improved over 90%. This proposed model could drastically improve the efficiency for determining structural parameters in preliminary design process, and thus reduce the iterations of trail analysis. Additionally, the model constructed from proposed framework is believed especially favored for evaluating the post-earthquake states/resilience of a region and/or highway network, where thousands of structures might be contained, and conducting nonlinear time history analysis for each one would be prohibitively time consuming and delay the rescue operations.
