        Valuation of ecosystem services in the organic carbon of the Pinus densiflora forest at Mt. Namsan, Seoul Metropolitan City

        Background: Standing biomass, litter production, rate of litter decomposition, amount of litter on forest floor, and amount of soil organic carbon distribution were investigated from March 2016 to November 2018 in order to evaluate the ecosystem value through organic carbon distribution in the Pinus densiflora forest at Namsan, Seoul Metropolitan City. Results: The amount of organic carbon in the Pinus densiflora forest was 261.09 ton C ha<sup>-1</sup> during the research period, and fixed organic carbon in plant through net photosynthesis was 3.2 ton C ha<sup>-1</sup> year<sup>-1</sup>. The organic carbon in plant was 62.77 ton C ha<sup>-1</sup> (24.04%), in litter on the forest floor was 3.65 ton C ha<sup>-1</sup> (1.40%), and in soil was 194.67 ton C ha<sup>-1</sup> (74.56%). The value of plant, litter on forest floor, and soil organic carbon distribution were each 6,277,000 won ha<sup>-1</sup>, 365, 000 won ha<sup>-1</sup>, and 19,467,000 won ha<sup>-1</sup>. The value per ton of fixed organic carbon in plant through net photosynthesis was 320,000 won ha<sup>-1</sup> year<sup>-1</sup> and the value of ecosystem services stored in carbon in the Namsan forest ecosystem was about 26.1 million won ha<sup>-1</sup> for 3 years. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the pine forests of Namsan rapidly decompose leaves due to the high atmospheric temperature and accumulate a large amount of organic carbon in the soil to provide climate control regulatory service function.

        Study on the Effect of Cimicifuga heracleifolia Ethanol Extract on Hyaluronic Acid Synthesis

        Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a mucopolysaccharide, occurring naturally in living organisms. It is one of the most hydrophilic molecules, so it has been known as being related to skin hydration and skin aging. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Cimicifuga heracleifolia ethanol extract on the hyaluronic acid synthesis and the inhibition of hyaluronidase activity. To determine cytotoxicity, hyaluronic acid synthase 2 (HAS2) gene expression, HA production and, hyaluronidase inhibitory effects, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-ly)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, real time - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), hyaluronic acid enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (HA-ELISA), and hyaluronidase assay were used, respectively. When the Cimicifuga heracleifolia extract was treated in the HaCaT cells up to 500 μg/mL concentration, cytotoxicity was confirmed by the Cimicifuga heracleifolia extract at concentrations above 200 μg/mL. Therefore, the optimum concentration of all experiments used in this study was determined to be 200 μg/mL. HAS2 gene expression increased by Cimicifuga heracleifolia extract in a concentration-dependent manner at all treatment concentrations. The production rate of HA was tended to decrease at the highest concentration of 200 μg/mL. The hyaluronidase activity inhibition effect of Cimicifuga heracleifolia extract was very high compared to the control group. Based on these results, Cimicifuga heracleifolia extract was expected to have a moisturizing effect on human skin and special attention should be paid to the determination of the concentration of Cimicifuga heracleifolia when developing cosmetic materials using it.

        Organic carbon distribution and budget of dominant woody plant community in the subalpine zone at volcanic Jeju Island, Korea

        Background: The Northern Hemisphere forest ecosystem is a major sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide, and the subalpine zone stores large amounts of carbon; however, their magnitude and distribution of stored carbon are still unclear. Results: To clarify the carbon distribution and carbon budget in the subalpine zone at volcanic Jeju Island, Korea, we report the C stock and changes therein owing to vegetation form, litter production, forest floor, and soil, and soil respiration between 2014 and 2016, for three subalpine forest ecosystems, namely, Abies koreana forest, Taxus cuspidata forest, and Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii forest. Organic carbon distribution of vegetation and NPP were bigger in the A. koreana forest than in the other two forests. However, the amount of soil organic carbon distribution was the highest in the J. chinensis var. sargentii forest. Compared to the amount of organic carbon distribution (AOCD) of aboveground vegetation (57.15 t C ha<sup>-1</sup>) on the subalpine-alpine forest in India, AOCD of vegetation in the subalpine forest in Mt. Halla was below 50%, but AOCD of soil in Mt. Halla was higher. We also compared our results of organic carbon budget in subalpine forest at volcanic island with data synthesized from subalpine forests in various countries. Conclusions: The subalpine forest is a carbon reservoir that stores a large amount of organic carbon in the forest soils and is expected to provide a high level of ecosystem services.

        본원 소아과 입원환자의 퇴원요약 기록을 전산관리하는 시스템을 개발하였다. 소아과 환자관리에 적합하도록 퇴원요약지를 설계하였고 개인용 컴퓨터를 사용하여 관리하도록 구성하였다. 주 기억장치 4MB와 보조기억 장치 120MB HDD을 장착한 PC-386DX 시스템을 기반으로 개발하였고 소프트웨어로는 FoxPro v2.0을 사용하였다. pull-down menu 방식과 window방식을 적용하여 비전문가라 할지라도 손쉽게 사용할수 있도록 하였고 정보입력 및 수정시 사용자 편의를 최대한 반영하고자 하였다. "AND"와 "OR"연산자를 사용하여 다양한 검색이 가능하였다. 본 시스템은 현재 본원 소아과에서 실무에 적용하고 있으며 향후 통계분석과 임상연구에 크게 활용할 수 있으리라 생각된다. A PC-based system was developded to manage discharge summary records of pediatric patients. It is based on a PC-386DX system equipped with 4MB memory and 120MB HDD, and its software was written in FOXPRO V2.0. Any users unfamiliar with computer can make an easy access to the data through pull-down menu and windows system. Logical operators of "AND" and/or "OR" enabled a flexible and various search conditions. The present system is being under clinical use in the Department of Pediatrics, and warrants future applications to statistical analysis as well as clinical research projects.

      • 한국 시판 막걸리의 항고혈압 활성 효과

        We investigated antihypertensive angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity for 60 different kinds of Makgeolli which are commercially available on market in Korea. As a result, we found R-14 Makgeolli showed superior ACE inhibitory activity among those 60 samples using the standard assay system. To prove the antihypertensive action of selected Makgeolli in animal, we fractionated R-14 Makgeolli based on the molecular weight using Centricon (cut-off less than 5 kDa). When we administrated that small-sized fraction as well as commercial antihypertension drug, Captopril to spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR) at a dosage of 600mg/kg and 100mg/kg, respectively. Both Makgeolli fraction and Captopril lowered the systolic pressure of SHR significantly. When we administrated commercially available intact alcoholic beverages including wine, sake, beer and Makgeolli at a dosage of 20 ml/kg body weight to the normal blood-pressure rats (SD-rat) in order to compare the effectiveness of various alcoholic beverages in antihypertensive action, Makgeolli showed the most significant effects to lower the systolic blood pressure of rats.

        In this study, literature on employee citizenship performance was reviewed. This review provides justification for the theoretical reliance on a recent conceptualization of citizenship performance derived from political philosophy. Further, it comprises the relevance of understanding the citizenship performance of contact employees and developing a citizenship measure specifically for this unique organizational position. It also includes the need for empirical research on the relationship between contact employee citizenship and service effectiveness. The next section reviewed literatures on citizenship rights and responsibilities and social exchange. Importantly, this review provides a basis for the inclusion of the independent variables in the future empirical study. It also provides the theoretical background for two competing theoretical models of citizenship performance. The last section of the literature review discussed relevant conceptual and empirical research on each of the independent variables in the future empirical study. This review provides an overview of previous research on each independent variable and further presents evidence concerning two competing theoretical models.

        Non-specific suppressions of delayed-type hypersensitivities (DTH) measured by skin reactivity to certain antigens, response of lymphocytes to mitogens and spontaneous(E) rosette formation of lymphocytes with sheep red blood cells (SRBC) have been reported to occur in cancer bearing-patients. The mechanisms responsible for these immunosuppressions remain unclear, but some investigators suggested that the immunosuppressions may result from immunosuppressive factors exudated from tumor masses. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of ascitic and pleural fluids from patients with cancers metastatic to peritonium or pleura. Non-cancerous ascitic and pleural effusions were used as controls. The ascitic and pleural fluids from hepatoma patients and pulmonary carcinoma patients decreased not only the percentages of early and late rosette formations severely but also the affinity of lymphocytes to SRBC. On the other hand ascitic fluids from stomach cancer patients increased the percentages of early rosette formation and the affinity of lymphocytes to SRBC. Control effusions exerted no effect on rosette formation except the pleural effusions from pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Pleural effusions obtained from tuberculosis patients slightly increased the percentages of rosette formation and the affinity of lymphocytes to SRBC.

        개에서 이중 결찰법을 통한 동맥관 개존증의 완치 예

        A ten months old, female Yorkshire terrier weighing 2.88 kg referred to veterinary teaching hospital of college of veterinary medicine, Konkuk University because of syncope, cough and dyspnea. First hematological and serum chemical test revealed thrombocytopenia, mild anemia, and increase of concentration of ALP (195 U/L). On 57 days later, second hematological and serum chemical test revealed polycythemia, increase of concentration of ALP (211 U/L), and Tchol (387 mg/dl). Right atrium enlargement, main pulmonary artery bulge and cardiomegaly (VHS = 11.5) were observed in radiographic findings. Ultrasonographic images showed both right and left ventricular dilation and turbulent flow between the descending aorta and the main pulmonary artery in color Doppler imaging. ECG showed left ventricular enlargement, SA block, and electrical alternant. Thoracotomy was performed through left fourth intercostal incision under isoflurane anesthesia. Patent ductus arteriosus was double ligated with 1-0 silk. Cough and dyspnea disappeared on 5 days after operation. Turbulent flow was not found in color doppler imaging of ultrasonography on 10 days after operation. Ten months later after the operation, syncope could not exist any more.
