황해와 한국연안해역 표층퇴적물중 Sb과 As의 농도분포특성
황동운,--,양한섭 한국환경과학회 2003 한국환경과학회지 Vol.12 No.10
We report the distributions of Sb and As in the surface sediment of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea. The mean concentrations of Sb and As range from 0.68 ppm to 1.01 ppm and from 7.4 ppm to 15.8 ppm.. respective]), and show relatively the high concentrations at the coast of Weolseong in the East Sea for Sh and at the coast of Gadeok Island in the South Sea for As. This may be due to the anthropogenic input of these elements via river and atmosphere from industry complex and agriculture regions around the study areas. Because of the difference of clay to silt proportion. the correlation between silt plus clay contents and Sb. As in the coastal surface sediment of Korea is not shown, the concentrations of Sb and As vary widely for the sample in which the silt plus clay contents are the same. Therefore. we suggest that the distribution patterns of Sh and As in surface sediment of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea are mainly controlled by the anthropogenic inputs and the sediment characteristics. On the other hand, the Sb concentrations are lower than those of the lowest effect level which is the standard of judgment for contamination, while the As concentrations are higher than those of the lowest effect level. This implies that the surface sediments of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea are considerably contaminated for As.

This study deals with the aspects of symbolic representations found in the worship spaces in Korean church buildings since 1980. 29 church buildings were surveyed and analyzed with regard to the spatial and decorative elements which seemed to symbolize the place. Followings are the conclusions of the study. Symbolic representation often found their way in the abstract and taciturn expression as seen in the graphic representation of the Cross. It was also found that the principles of design were effectively applied to the symbolization of the worshipping space. Such as the use of light, hierarchical order, centrality, axiality, symmetry, etc

Background: The end-tidal carbon dioxide tension(ETCO₂) is defined as a partial pressure of carbon dioxide at the end of an exhaled breath. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between ETCO₂and arterial carbon dioxide tension(PaO₂) in nonintubated patients with respiratory distress in emergency department(ED). Methods: A prospective non-blind study was performed in ED of our university hospitals. Participants included all nonintubated adult patients with respiratory distress requiring arterial blood gas analysis. ETCO₂was measured with a capnography monitor during tidal volume breathing. ETCO₂were recoreded at the time of arterial blood gas sampling. The correlation between ETCO₂and PaCO₂was analyzed in all patients and in subgroups by simple linear regression. Results: Sixty patients were enrolled. In all patients, ETCO₂was 5.72mmHg lower than PaCO₂and correlated well with PaCO₂(r²=0.716). ETCO₂correlated best with PaCO₂in patients who were either acidotic or non-smoking. Conclusion: ETCO₂correlate well with PaCO₂in nonintubated patients with respiratory distress in ED. ETCO₂may be sufficient to reflect PaCO₂in selected patients and obviate the need for repeat arterial blood gas determination.

We investigated the change of growth characters by over-expressing OsPT6 (OsPT6-OX) under phosphorus (Pi) deficient condition in rice. In analyzing the change of growth rate according to Pi treatment for two weeks, shoot growth rate of OsPT6-OX was increased in Pi deficient condition than in Pi sufficient condition. Therefore, the chlorophyll content of leaf in OsPT6-OXs did not increase even decreased in the youngest leaf. However growth rate of wild type plant in Pi deficient condition showed significant reduction with increment of chlorophyll content. In analyzing agronomic characters, the tiller number of OsPT6-OX less decreased than those of wild type plant in Pi deficient condition. Panicle number and ripening rate of wild type plant were changed according to Pi treatment. However those of OsPT6-OX did not change in such conditions. Resulting of changes in agronomic characters, yield of wild type plant decreased about 10 % in Pi deficient condition. That of OsPT6-OX did not show significant difference in Pi deficient condition. The results obtained this study demonstrated that over-expression of OsPT6 could increase phosphorus deficient stress resistance in rice.

We report the distribution of $^{210}$ Pb and various metallic elements (Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, Ti, Mn, Sr, Ba, Zn, V, Cr, Zr, Ni, Cu, and Y) in the sediment cores from six shellfish-farming bays in the South Sea of Korea. The $^{210Pb}$ inventories in Deukryang, Gwangyang, and Goseong Bay cores were comparable to those expected from the known fallout input. However, the $^{210}$ Pb inventories were two times higher in Jinju, Gangjin, and Hansan-Koeje Bay cores, suggesting an important role of other sources such as fluvial inputs. Based on the enrichment factor analyses, non-detrital fractions of all the measured elements were found to be insignificant. The Mn was highly enriched only in the surface sediments of the Jinju and Goseong Bay, which implies that the surface-sediment environment of these bays is efficiently oxidizing Mn remobilized from either pore waters or bottom seawaters. These data set provides the sources of heavy metal in sediment around shellfish farms and the current level of metallic elements for the future monitoring.

In order to determine the temporal and spatial variations of nutrient profiles in the shallow pore water columns (upper 30 cm depth) of intertidal sandflats, we measured the salinity and nutrient concentrations in pore water and seawater at various coastal environments along the southern coast of Korea. In the intertidal zone, salinity and nutrient concentrations in pore water showed marked vertical changes with depth, owing to the active exchange between the pore water and overlying seawater, while they are temporally more stable and vertically constant in the sublittoral zone. In some cases, the advective flow of fresh groundwater caused strong vertical gradients of salinity and nutrients in the upper 10 cm depth of surface sediments, indicating the active mixing of the fresher groundwater with overlying seawater. Such upper pore water column profiles clearly signified the temporal fluctuation of lower-salinity and higher-Si seawater intrusion into pore water in an intertidal sandflat near the mouth of an estuary. We also observed a semimonthly fluctuation of pore water nutrients due to spring-neap tide associated recirculation of seawater through the upper sediments. Our study shows that the exchange of water and nutrients between shallow pore water and overlying seawater is most active in the upper 20 cm layer of intertidal sandflats, due to physical forces such as tides, wave set-up, and density-thermal gradient.
Measurements of $^{224}Ra\;and\;^{223}Ra$ in the Nakdong River estuary and the South Sea of Korea
Hwang, Dong-Woon,Kim, Gue-Buem,Yang, Han-Soeb The Korean Society of Oceanography 2003 Journal of the Korean Society of Oceanography Vol.38 No.2
The horizontal distributions of $^{224}Ra$ (half life=3.4 days) and $^{223}Ra$ (half life=11.3 days) were measured in surface seawaters of the Nakdong River estuary and the South Sea of Korea in April and October 2002. In order to determine these short-lived Ra isotopes, we used a delayed coincidence counter which is much more rapid and accurate than traditional methods. In an estuarine mixing zone (salinity, ~l6 ppt), the activities of $^{224}Ra\;and\;^{223}Ra$ were much greater than what would be expected from a mixture of freshwater and seawater in the Nakdong River estuary. This excess Ra may be a result of Ra desorption from fresh sediments originating from the river upstream. However, in the more open areas of the Nakdong River estuary (salinity>30 ppt) and the South Sea of Korea, $^{224}Ra\;and\;^{^{223}Ra$ activities decreased exponentially as a function of distance offshore. Using the decrease of $^{223}Ra$ with distance offshore in the South Sea of Korea, we estimated the apparent horizontal eddy diffusivities. The apparent eddy diffusion coefficients in South Sea of Korea are calculated to be approximately $3500-8000\;\textrm{m}^2/sec$.
