Administration of vitamin D3 by injection or drinking water alters serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol concentrations of nursery pigs

        Young Dal Jang,Jingyun Ma,Ning Lu,Jina Lim,H. James Monegue,Robert L. Stuart,Merlin D. Lindemann 아세아·태평양축산학회 2018 Animal Bioscience Vol.31 No.2

Objective: Two experiments were conducted to evaluate vitamin D3 administration to nursery pigs by injection or in drinking water on serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OHD3) concentrations. Methods: At weaning, 51 pigs (27 and 24 pigs in experiments 1 and 2, respectively) were allotted to vitamin D3 treatments. Treatments in experiment 1 were: i) control (CON), no vitamin administration beyond that in the diet, ii) intramuscular (IM) injection of 40,000 IU of vitamin D3 at weaning, and iii) water administration, 5,493 IU of vitamin D3/L drinking water for 14 d postweaning. Treatments in experiment 2 were: i) control (CON), no vitamin administration, and ii) water administration, 92 IU of d-α-tocopherol and 5,493 IU of vitamin D3/L drinking water for 28 d postweaning. The lightest 2 pigs within each pen were IM injected with an additional 1,000 IU of d-α-tocopherol, 100,000 IU of retinyl palmitate, and 100,000 IU of vitamin D3. Results: In both experiments, serum 25-OHD3 was changed after vitamin D3 administration (p<0.05). In experiment 1, injection and water groups had greater values than CON group through d 35 and 21 post-administration, respectively (p<0.05). In experiment 2, serum values peaked at d 3 post-administration in the injection groups regardless of water treatments (p<0.05) whereas CON and water-only groups had peaks at d 14 and 28 post-administration, respectively (p<0.05). Even though the injection groups had greater serum 25-OHD3 concentrations than the non-injection groups through d 7 post-administration regardless of water treatments (p<0.05), the water-only group had greater values than the injection-only group from d 21 post-administration onward (p<0.05). Conclusion: Serum 25-OHD3 concentrations in pigs increased either by vitamin D3 injection or drinking water administration. Although a single vitamin D3 injection enhanced serum 25-OHD3 concentrations greater than water administration in the initial period post-administration, a continuous supply of vitamin D3 via drinking water could maintain higher serum values than the single injection.

      • H-bridge 멀티-레벨 인버터의 파워Cell AVR에 관한 알고리즘

전재현(J.H.Jeon),윤홍민(H.M.Yun),김민극(M.K.KIM),이정표(J.P.Lee),장동제(D.J.Jang),나승호(S.H.Na),권봉현(B.H.Kwon) 전력전자학회 2005 전력전자학술대회 논문집 Vol.- No.-

      • Combined steam and carbon dioxide reforming of methane and side reactions: Thermodynamic equilibrium analysis and experimental application

        Jang, W.J.,Jeong, D.W.,Shim, J.O.,Kim, H.M.,Roh, H.S.,Son, I.H.,Lee, S.J. Applied Science Publishers 2016 APPLIED ENERGY Vol.173 No.-

<P>Thermodynamic equilibrium analysis of the combined steam and carbon dioxide reforming of methane (CSCRM) and side reactions was performed using total Gibbs free energy minimization. The effects of (CO2 + H2O)/CH4 ratio (0.9-2.9), CO2:H2O ratio (3:1-1:3), and temperature (500-1000 degrees C) on the equilibrium conversions, yields, coke yield, and H-2/CO ratio were investigated. A (CO2 + H2O)/CH4 ratio greater than 1.2, a CO2:H2O ratio of 1:2.1, and a temperature of at least 850 degrees C are preferable reaction conditions for the synthesis gas preparation in the gas to liquid process. Simulated conditions were applied to the CSCRM reaction and the experimental data were compared with the thermodynamic equilibrium results. The thermodynamic equilibrium results were mostly consistent with the experimental data, but the reverse water gas shift reaction rapidly occurred in the real chemical reaction and under excess oxidizing agent conditions. In addition, a long-term stability test (under simulated conditions) showed that the equilibrium conversion was maintained for 500 h and that the coke formation on the used catalyst was not observed. Effect of acid-pretreatment on hydrogen fermentation of food waste: Microbial community analysis by next generation sequencing

        Kim, D.H.,Jang, S.,Yun, Y.M.,Lee, M.K.,Moon, C.,Kang, W.S.,Kwak, S.S.,Kim, M.S. Pergamon Press ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2014 International journal of hydrogen energy Vol.39 No.29

This work presents the effect of acid-pretreatment on H2 fermentation of food waste with detailed microbial information by next generation sequencing. The pretreated food waste at pH 1.0-4.0 was cultivated under mesophilic conditions without external inoculum addition. From the food waste acid-pretreated at pH 1-3, H2 yields in the range of 1.37-1.74 mol H2/mol hexoseadded were achieved, attaining the highest value at pH 2. Clostridium sp. such as Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824 and Clostridium perfringens occupied more than 70% of total number of sequences at pH 1-3. On the other hand, in the control (no pretreatment) and at pH 4, lactic acid bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Streptococcus were found to be the dominant genus (>90% of total number of sequences), resulting in a low H2 yield. In addition, the effect of substrate concentration on H2 fermentation was investigated, and the maximum H2 productivity was estimated to be 27.2 L H2/L/d by Andrew's model.

Effect of the Length of Feed Withdrawal on Weight Loss, Yield and Meat Color of Broiler

        Kim, D.H.,Yoo, Y.M.,Kim, S.H.,Jang, B.G.,Park, B.Y.,Cho, S.H.,Seong, P.N.,Hah, K.H.,Lee, J.M.,Kim, Y.K.,Hwang, I.H. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.1

The current study was conducted to determine the optimum length of feed withdrawal for pre-harvest broilers. A total of three hundred broilers were sampled from an industrial population, and 30 chicks for each weight group (e.g., 1.5 and 2.5 kg) were randomly assigned to feed withdrawal treatments for 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 h. Weight loss, yield, muscle pH, objective meat color and weights of gastro intestinal contents, crop, gizzard, provenriculus, small intestine, caecum, and rectum were determined. Live weight loss was significantly (p<0.05) increased as length of feed withdrawal extended. A significant (p<0.05) carcass yield for both 1.5 and 2.5 kg groups coincided after 9 and 6 h feed withdrawal, respectively. Net weights of intestinal contents for crop and gizzard were significantly (p<0.05) reduced by 6 h, and the reduction for proventriculus and small intestine occurred from 3 h. A noticeable effect of feed withdrawal on pH for breast muscle at 3 h postmortem occurred only when chicks were fasted for 3 h of which pH (6.05) was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that for other groups including the control (5.74). There was a linear tendency of higher lightness (Hunter L* value) numerically for chicks fasted for longer periods. The highest coefficient of determinations of regression models to estimate weight loss as a function of fasting period and body weights were achieved, when the models included both linear and quadratic terms for fasting period, and linear term for both 1.5 ($R^2=0.76$) and 2.5 kg ($R^2=0.78$) body weight groups. Given the practical aspect, approximately 1.5 kg of body weight is dominant, weight loss could be predicted by the following function; live weight $loss=26.6-0.28{\times}(fasting period)^2+12.34{\times}pasting\;period-0.012{\times}body\;weight$, $R^2=0.76$. Current data implied that the optimum fasting time for pre-slaughter chicks varied depending on slaughter weight; 6 and 9-h fasting were recommendable for 2.5 and 1.5 kg chicks, with little effect on objective meat color.

Enhanced ammonia dehydrogenation over Ru/La(x)-Al2O3 (x=0-50 mol%): Structural and electronic effects of La doping

        Chung, D.B.,Kim, H.Y.,Jeon, M.,Lee, D.H.,Park, H.S.,Choi, S.H.,Nam, S.W.,Jang, S.C.,Park, J.H.,Lee, K.Y.,Yoon, C.W. Pergamon Press ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2017 International journal of hydrogen energy Vol.42 No.3

<P>Ru (1.0 wt% loaded)-based catalysts supported on La(x)-Al2O3 (x = 0,1, 5,10, and 50 mol%) were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and temperature programmed reduction (TPR). The as-prepared La(x)-Al2O3 materials were found to have increased amounts of the LaAlO3 phase as the La doping level (x) increased from 0 to 50 mol%. In addition to metal-to support interactions between Ru and Al2O3, the newly formed LaAlO3 phase in the Ru catalysts was proposed to interact strongly with Ru active sites based on the XRD, H-2-TPR and XPS results. The Ru/La(x)-Al2O3 catalysts were active for the dehydrogenation of ammonia, and among them, the Ru/La(10)-Al2O3 and Ru/La(50)-Al2O3 (or Ru/LaAlO3) catalysts exhibited superior performance with >96% conversions of ammonia at 550 degrees C. When an increased Ru content (2.0 wt%) was impregnated onto La(10)-Al2O3, the dehydrogenation activity was significantly improved with nearly 100% conversion (>95%) of ammonia at 500 degrees C. This catalyst further displayed an enhanced thermal stability towards ammonia decomposition with the GHSV(NH3) of 10,000 mL/g(cat)h at 550 degrees C for >120 h. The incorporated element La is thought to play an important role in enhancing metal-support interaction, ultimately facilitating ammonia dehydrogenation even at low temperatures. • WO3 nanofibers functionalized by protein-templated RuO2 nanoparticles as highly sensitive exhaled breath gas sensing layers

        Kim, K.H.,Kim, S.J.,Cho, H.J.,Kim, N.H.,Jang, J.S.,Choi, S.J.,Kim, I.D. Elsevier Sequoia 2017 Sensors and actuators. B, Chemical Vol.241 No.-

<P>In this work, a novel catalytic synthesis and functionalization method using apoferritin is used to fabricate RuO2 nanoparticles (NPs) loaded WO3 nanofibers (NFs) for potential diagnosis of diabetes. Catalytic ruthenium (Ru) NPs with very small average diameters of 1.8 +/- 0.9 nm were synthesized using apoferritin which is a hollow protein cage, and were easily functionalized on WO3 NFs by introducing electrospinning solution with W precursor and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). As-spun Ru NPs-loaded W precursor/PVP composite NFs were calcined at 600 degrees C for 1 h in air atmosphere to achieve RuO2-functionalized WO3 NFs. The small size and uniform distribution of catalytic RuO2 NPs were well maintained due to hollow nature of apoferritin cages after calcination. The chemo-resistive sensors using RuO2-functionalized WO3 NFs showed significantly enhanced acetone (CH3COCH3) sensing response (R-air/R-gas = 78.61-5 ppm), which was 7.4 times higher than the response (R-air/R-gas =10.61-5 ppm) of pristine WO3 NFs at highly humid atmosphere (95% RH). In addition, the RuO2-functionalized WO3 NFs showed outstanding selectivity toward acetone gas in comparison with other gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), toluene (C6H5CH3), ethanol (C2H5OH), pentane (C5H12), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen (H-2), and water vapor (H2O) at 5 ppm. These results represent potential feasibility for the detection of acetone in exhaled breath for diagnosis of diabetes. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.</P>

분만 후 모돈의 행동적 회복과 포유자돈의 행동적 발달

        전중환,김동주,한지훈,연성찬,장홍희 한국동물자원과학회 2003 한국축산학회지 Vol.45 No.6

We investigated postpartum behaviors of sows and their litters. The aim of this study was to determine the behavioral recovery of sows and behavioral development of their piglets postpartum. Five multiparous sows(Landrace × Yorkshire) and their litters were studied over a period of 5 days postpartum. The litter size varied from 8 to 13 with a mean of 11.2 piglets. The behaviors of sows and their piglets were recorded using five CCD cameras, a multiplexer and a time lapsed VCR. The videotapes were scanned every 2 min to obtain an instantaneous behavioral sample. In the behaviors of sows, ?Lying ventrally? increased from 1h postpartum to 26g postpartum, then decreased gradually, and stabilized after 80h postpartum. ?Lying ventrally? decreased from 1h postpartum to 26h postpartum and stabilized after 80h postpartum. ?Standing, drinking and feeding? increased from 1h postpartum to 23h postpartum, then decreased gradually, and increased again from 60h postpartum. ?Sitting? increased from 1h postpartum to 46h postpartum and then decreased. In the behaviors of piglets, ?Lying? increased rapidly from 1h postpartum to 45h postpartum, and then was maintained at an almost constant level. ?Massaging and Suckling? decreased rapidly from 1h postpartum to 36g postpartum, and then was maintained at an almost constant level. ?Walking? increased from 1h postpartum to 21h postpartum, then decreased gradually. These results suggest that the behavioral recovery of the sow is almost completed at 80h postpartum and that the behavioral development of the piglet is almost completed at 45h postpartum.

A novel chimeric promoter that is highly responsive to hypoxia and metals

        Lee, J-Y,Lee, Y-S,Kim, J-M,Kim, K L,Lee, J-S,Jang, H-S,Shin, I-S,Suh, W,Jeon, E-S,Byun, J,Kim, D-K Nature Publishing Group 2006 Gene Therapy Vol.13 No.10

To develop a potent hypoxia-inducible promoter, we evaluated the usefulness of chimeric combinations of the (Egr-1)-binding site (EBS) from the Egr-1 gene, the metal-response element (MRE) from the metallothionein gene, and the hypoxia-response element (HRE) from the phosphoglycerate kinase 1 gene. In transient transfection assays, combining three copies of HRE (3 × HRE) with either EBS or MRE significantly increased hypoxia responsiveness. When a three-enhancer combination was tested, the EBS–MRE-3 × HRE (E–M–H) gave a hypoxia induction ratio of 69. The expression induced from E–M–H-pGL3 was 2.4-fold higher than that induced from H-pGL3 and even surpassed the expression from a human cytomegalovirus promoter-driven vector. The high inducibility of E–M–H was confirmed by validation studies in different cells and by expressing other cDNAs. Gel shift assays together with functional overexpression studies suggested that increased levels of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α, metal transcription factor-1 and Egr-1 may be associated with the high inducibility of the E–M–H chimeric promoter. E–M–H was also induced by hypoxia mimetics such as Co2+ and deferoxamine (DFX) and by hydrogen peroxide. Gene expression from the E–M–H was reversible as shown by the reduced expression of the transgene upon removal of inducers such as hypoxia and DFX. In vivo evaluation of the E–M–H in ischemic muscle revealed that erythropoietin secretion and luciferase and LacZ expression were significantly higher in the E–M–H group than in a control or H group. With its high induction capacity and versatile means of modulation, this novel chimeric promoter should find wide application in the treatment of ischemic diseases and cancer.Gene Therapy (2006) 13, 857–868. doi:10.1038/sj.gt.3302728; published online 9 February 2006
