        Interleukin-33, matrix metalloproteinase-9, and tissue ınhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1 in myocardial infarction

        Background/Aims: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is characterized by increased inflammatory processes and endothelial activation. We investigated the association between ACS and inflammatory mediators and matrix-degrading enzymes. Methods: We prospectively enrolled 55 consecutive patients with ACS: 25 with unstable angina (UA) and 30 with non-ST elevated myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). For comparison, 25 age- and sex-matched subjects with no significant coronary artery stenosis were included as the control group. Peripheral serum levels of interleukin (IL)-33, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9, tissue inhibitor of MMP-1, and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured on admission, and at 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours after the initial evaluation. Results: Compared to serum levels in the control group, serum levels of IL-33 decreased in the NSTEMI group (p < 0.05), and levels of MMP-9 and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 increased in the UA group (p < 0.01, p < 0.05, respectively) and NSTEMI group (p < 0.05, p < 0.05, respectively). IL-33 levels were significantly lower on admission than at 12 hours after the initial evaluation (p < 0.05). IL-33 levels were negatively correlated with MMP-9 levels (r = -0.461, p < 0.05) and CRP levels (r = -0.441, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Elevated levels of MMP-9, TIMP-1, and decreased levels of IL-33 play a role in the development and progression of ACS.

      • Predictive Role of the Neutrophil Lymphocyte Ratio for Invasion with Gestational Trophoblastic Disease

        Purpose: The objective of this study was to assess the predictive role of the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) for invasion of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD). Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 127 women who were managed at our clinic for GTD. Of all patients, 8 showed invasion according to histological examination. The clinical parameters of patients with invasive GTD (Group 1; n=8) were compared with patients who showed no invasion (Group 2; n=119). All underwent a prior uterine evacuation and followed up by regular assessment of ${\beta}$-hCG titers. Results: Demographic and obstetric history and pre-evacuation hCG levels of the patients showed no statistically significantly difference between the groups (p>0.05). The mean gestational weeks (GW), size of the GTD and NLR levels were statistically significantly higher in the invasive GTD group (p<0.05). Correlations between invasion and gestational weeks, size of GTD, post-evacuation chemotherapy and NLR were evident. ROC curve analysis demonstrated that GW, size of GTD and NLR may be discriminative parameters in predicting invasion of GTD. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study evaluating the predictive role of NLR in invasion of GTD. In conclusion, we think that pretreatment NLR can be used as a biomarker of invasion in GTD.

        Communication Failures During Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations

        Chemical tankers handle a diverse range of cargo types, necessitating varied cargo handling procedures due to the hazards associated with each type. Consequently, operations require heightened precautions and attention. Any misinterpretation or oversight can result in irreversible accidents. The incidence of cargo overflow in prior chemical tanker operations was reported by 56.09% of 353 Turkish, Korean, and Indonesian participants in this study, substantiating the gravity of the matter. In this study, the variables that caused communication failure during cargo operations and countermeasures are discussed in detail. The analysis leveraged survey data processed using factor analysis via SPSS. All of the top five factors leading to communication failure were attributed to human errors. Notably, unfamiliarity with cargo operations emerged as the most prevalent cause of communication failures, and stopping a blaming culture was the first among the countermeasures. The identified causes of communication failures could be solved by the countermeasures suggested by the survey participants. The solutions will promote effective communication during hazardous cargo operations and subsequently contribute to safety with significant potential to provide valuable insight into companies operating a fleet of chemical tankers.

        Automatic Classification Models and Algorithms Based on the Minimum Sum-of-Squared Errors Model

        We propose new models and algorithms for automatic classification of objects (clustering) based on the minimum sum-of-squared errors clustering (MSSC) model. Our approach was aimed at improving the accuracy and stability of the result in solving practical problems, such as identifying homogeneous batches of industrial products. We examined the application of the MSSC model and k-means algorithm with various distance measures: Euclidean, Manhattan, Mahalanobis for the problem of automatic classification of objects in a multi-dimensional space of measured parameters (features). For such problems, we present a new model (Mahalanobis Minimum Sum-of-Squared Error Clustering, MMSSC) for solving problems of automatic classification based on the MSSC model with Mahalanobis distance. In addition, we present a new algorithm for automatic classification of objects based on the MMSSC optimization model with the Mahalanobis distance measure and the weighted average covariance matrix calculated from the training sample (pre-labeled data). This algorithm allows us to reduce the number of errors (increasing the Rand index) when identifying homogeneous production batches based on the results of quality control tests. A new approach in the development of evolutionary algorithms for the MSSC problem is presented using a greedy agglomerative heuristic procedure contained in several genetic operators. The use of this approach enables a statistically significant increase in the accuracy of the result (the achieved value of the objective function within the chosen MMSSC mathematical model), as well as its stability, in a fixed time, in comparison with the known algorithms. Thus, in this work, an increase in the accuracy of solving the problem of automatic classification is achieved both by increasing the adequacy of the model (according to the Rand index) and by improving the algorithm that allows us to achieve the best objective function values of within the framework of the chosen model.

        Synergistic effects of silica aerogels/xerogels on properties of polymer composites: A review

        The present review focuses on synergistic effectsof silica aerogels/xerogels on properties of polymercomposites. Infirst part of the review, synthesis of silica aerogels/xerogels from inexpensive silicaprecursors in addition to silicon alkoxides is explained in detail. The promising properties such as highlyporous structure, low density, high thermal stability, low thermal conductivity and acoustic velocity, andcontrollable hydrophobicity of silica aerogels/xerogels and their applications are enlarged upon. In otherpart of the review, enhanced properties of various polymer composites are summarized in the presenceof silica aerogel/xerogel asfiller. The significant improvements in thermal and sound insulationperformance, physicomechanical properties and service life under harsh environmental conditions ofpolymer composites including silica aerogel/xerogel are represented. The desirable properties of thepolymer composites extend potential high technology applications of these materials.

        Decompositions of soft continuity and soft AB-continuity

        In this paper, we introduce soft semi-regular sets, soft AB-sets and soft $% \alpha $AB-sets in soft topological spaces which are defined over an initial universe with a fixed set of parameters. We discuss their relationships with other weaker forms of soft open sets like soft semi-open sets, soft A-sets and soft B-sets. We also introduce the concepts of soft AB-continuous function and soft $\alpha $AB-continuous function. The new decompositions of soft continuity are provided.

        The fuzzy logic-based modeling of a micro-scale sloped solar chimney power plant

        The energy demand of world is increasing worldwide because of increasing population and developing technology. The use of environmentally friendly renewable resources is very important in providing the increasing energy needs. In the renewable energy sources, the solar energy has a strategic importance because of its huge potential and unlimited. The production of electrical energy by solar chimney power plants is one of the reliable and profitable methods. Fuzzy logic-based approaches are commonly used for modeling different systems in many fields. Also, a renewable energy system can be modelled by fuzzy definitions. In this way, it can provide efficiently and quickly theoretical estimates of systems with productive simulations. In this study, using the experimental data obtained from the micro-scale sloped solar chimney power plant in carried on scientific research project by authors, the obtaining and verifying a fuzzy logic-based model (FLBM) that can calculate the change in air velocity at turbine according to the change of radiation and temperature is presented. The air velocity at the turbine inlet is the considerable variable determining the electricity generation in a solar chimney. Thus, the output of the model is determined as this air velocity. In changes in the radiation and temperature values are defined as inputs. A two input-one output fuzzy model is obtained, in which the inference method is designed in the form of Mamdani and the membership functions in the form of the triangle, making inferences according to the rule base determined by the experience achieved from the experimentally studies. In order to investigate the accuracy of the FLBM, the simulation results and the data get from experimental setup in April 2019 are compared and evaluated. The validation of the FLBM compared to the experimental system is investigated using different error evaluation criteria. It is proved that the results of FLBM and experimental data are realized at a high rate (95.95 %) close to each other and similarly.

      • Clinical Significance of Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance in Detecting Preinvasive Cervical Lesions in Post-Menopausal Turkish Women

        Background: To evaluate the clinical significance of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) in PAP test in post-menopausal women and compare with reproductive age women. Materials and Methods: A total of 367 patients who referred to our gynecologic oncology clinic were included to the study between September 2012 and August 2013. Data for 164 post-menopausal (group 1) and 203 pre-menopausal (group 2) women with ASCUS cytology were evaluated retrospectively. Immediate colposcopy and endocervical curettage was performed for both groups and conization for all women with a result suggestive of CIN2-3. Histopathological results and demographic features of patients were compared between the two groups. Results: Mean age of the patients was $54.6{\pm}6.5$ years in group 1 and $38{\pm}6.6$ years in group 2. Some 14 (8.5%) of post-menopausal women and 36 (17.7%) of pre-menopausal women were current smokers (p=011). Totals of 38 (23.2%) post-menopausal and 64 (31.5%) pre-menopausal women were assessed for HPV-DNA. High risk HPV was detected in 7 (4.3%) and 21 (10.3%), respectively (p=0.029). Final histopathological results recorded were normal cervix, low grade cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN 1), and high grade cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN2-3). In group 1 results were 84.8%, 12.2% and 1.8%, respectively, and in group 2 were 71.9%, 23.2% and 4.9%. There were no cases of micro invasive or invasive cervical carcinoma in either group. Two cases were detected as endometrial carcinoma in the menopausal group (1.2%). Conclusions: In current study we found that preinvasive lesions were statistically significantly higher in pre-menopausal women than post-menopausal women with ASCUS. Cervicitis was more common in menopausal women. Therefore, we think that in case of ASCUS in a post-menopausal woman there is no need for radical management.
