Purpose: Although estrogen receptors (ERs) signal pathways are involved in the pathogenesis and development of asthma, their expressions and effects remain controversial. This study aimed to investigate the expressions of ERα and ERβ as well as their mechanisms in airway remodeling and mucus production in asthma. Methods: The expressions of ERα and ERβ in the airway epithelial cells of bronchial biopsies and induced sputum cells were examined by immunohistochemistry. The associations of ERs expressions with airway inflammation and remodeling were evaluated in asthmatic patients. In vitro, the regulations of ERs expressions in human bronchial epithelial cell lines were examined using western blot analysis. The epidermal growth factor (EGF)-mediated ligand-independent activation of ERα and its effect on epithelial-mesenchymal transitions (EMTs) were investigated in asthmatic epithelial cells by western blot, immunofluorescent staining, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: ERα and ERβ were expressed on both bronchial epithelial cells and induced sputum cells, and the expressions showed no sex difference. Compared to controls, male asthmatic patients had higher levels of ERα on the bronchial epithelium, and there were cell-specific expressions of ERα and ERβ in induced sputum. The expression of ERα in the airway epithelium was inversely correlated to forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) % and FEV1/forced vital capacity. Severe asthmatic patients had significantly greater levels of ERα in the airway epithelium than mild-moderate patients. ERα level was positively correlated with the thickness of the subepithelial basement membrane and airway epithelium. In vitro, co-stimulation of interleukin (IL)-4 and EGF increased the expression of ERα and promoted its nuclear translocation. EGF activated the phosphorylation of ERα via extracellular signal-regulated kinase and c-Jun N-terminal kinase pathways. ERα knockdown alleviated EGF-mediated EMTs and mucus production in airway epithelial cells of asthma. Conclusions: ERα contributes to asthmatic airway remodeling and mucus production through the EGF-mediated ligand-independent pathway.

Atractylis lancea (Thunb.) DC. (AL), an important medicinal herb in Asia, has been shown to have anti-tumor effects on cancer cells, but the involved mechanisms are poorly understood. This study focused on potential effects and molecular mechanisms of AL on the proliferation of the Hep-G2 liver cancer cell line in vitro. Cell viability was assessed by MTT test in Hep-G2 cells incubated with an ethanol extract of AL. Then, the effects of AL on apoptosis and cell cycle progression were determined by flow cytometry. Telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) assays was performed to investigate telomerase activity. The mRNA and protein expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) and c-myc were determined by real-time RT-PCR and Western blotting. Our results show that AL effectively inhibits proliferation in Hep-G2 cells in a concentrationand time-dependent manner. When Hep-G2 cells were treated with AL after 48h,the $IC_{50}$ was about 72.1 ${\mu}g/mL$. Apoptosis was induced by AL via arresting the cells in the G1 phase. Furthermore, AL effectively reduced telomerase activity through inhibition of mRNA and protein expression of hTERT and c-myc. Hence, these data demonstrate that AL exerts anti-proliferative effects in Hep-G2 cells via down-regulation of the c-myc/hTERT/telomerase pathway.

Aim: To investigate the protective effect of purified fraction 1 polysaccharide extracted from Rheum tanguticum RTP1 on irradiation-induced immune damage in mice. Methods: Kunming mice were randomly divided into five groups: normal group (NC), irradiation control group (IC), RTP1 low dose (200 mg/kg), middle dose (400 mg/kg) and high dose (800 mg/kg) groups. RTP1 was adminstered by the gastric route for 14 d, mice in the NC and IC groups being given by 0.9% sodium chloride solution in the same way. The mice in all groups except NC group were irradiated with 2.0 Gy $^{60}Co{\gamma}$-ray on the fourteenth day. Immune indives of non-specific immune function, cellular immunity and humoral immunity were assessed at the 24th hour after radiation. Results: Compared with the IC group, the spleen index, thymus index, rate of carbon clearance, phagocytic function of macrophages, lymphocyte proliferation, hemolysin value of blood serum and NK activity were increased markedly (P < 0.05 or P < 0.05). Conclusion: RTP1 has an obvious protective effects on damage in ${\gamma}$-ray radiated mice.

The methanol extracts from 40 plant species were screened for their nematicidal activity against the nematodes Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, Panagrellus redivivus and Caenorhabditis elegans. The leaf extract of Ficus carica L. exhibited the strongest nematicidal activity, causing 74.3%, 96.2% and 98.4% mortality, respectively, within 72 h. By bioassay-guided fractionation, a coumarin was obtained. The compound was determined to be psoralen based on spectroscopic data. It showed nematicidal activity against the tested nematodes. This is the first report of the nematicidal activity of F. carica and psoralen.

The removal of toluene using a cycling adsorption and plasma mineralization process was investigated ina packed reactor. The supports of catalysts were optimized in regards to mineralization rate (MR), CO2selectivity (SCO2), and the production of by-products. The hybrid support g-Al2O3-HY showed a muchbetter MR in comparison to that of HY alone. Using hybrid HY-g-Al2O3 as supports, loading Ag–Mn ononly HY or g-Al2O3 had a better MR than loading Ag–Mn on both HY and g-Al2O3. The stability studyshowed that intermediates accumulated on the surface of the catalyst lead to its deterioration.

Toluene abatement through adsorption and then plasma oxidation using ZSM-5, ZSM-5-γ-Al2O3 (Z-Al), ZSM-5-TiO2 (Z-Ti), ZSM-5-BaTiO3 (Z-Ba), and AgMn/ZSM-5-BaTiO3 (AgMn/Z-Ba) as adsorbents/catalysts was investigated. The efficiency of toluene removal reached ∼100% for all the tested adsorbents/catalysts. ZSM-5 had the lowest mineralization rate (MR) of ∼43%, while Z-Ba had the highest MR (88%) with an SCO2 of ∼80%. After loading AgMn onto Z-Ba, both the breakthrough capacity of toluene and SCO2 was increased, while the production of byproduct O3 and MR was decreased. The mixed materials created a higher amount of active species capable of deeply oxidizing adsorbed toluene.

Road excitation is the basic input of vehicle vibration, which greatly impacts on vehicle ride comfort. In addition, it can cause vertical vibration of the vehicle, leading to deformation of the powertrain mount. Similarly, the longitudinal movement of the powertrain can also cause deformation of the powertrain mount. Due to the effect of the powertrain mount, there is a mutual coupling between the vehicle in the longitudinal and vertical directions, which has a great influence on the smoothness and comfort of the vehicle. In order to reveal the impact of random road excitation on the vehicle dynamic characteristics of a dual clutch transmission (DCT) vehicle under starting and shifting conditions, a longitudinal-vertical coupled dynamic model of the DCT vehicle considering the powertrain mount was established. This model includes dynamic torque model of the engine, powertrain mount model, transmission system model, tire model and road excitation model. The influence of random road excitation on the vehicle’s dynamic characteristics is analyzed under starting, shifting, and different starting and shifting intentions. The simulation results of the longitudinal-vertical coupling dynamic DCT vehicle model considering road excitation are compared with vehicle test results, the model is found to accurately reflect the influence of road excitation on the dynamic performance of DCT vehicles under starting and shifting conditions, thus verifying the correctness of the model.

Objective: This study aimed to determine effects of doctor-patient communication on the quality of life among breast cancer survivors in 16 communities in southern China. Methods: Multistage random sampling was to use to recruit 260 females from the Guangzhou Cancer Registry Database who were diagnosed with breast cancer. A questionnaire provided data on the doctor-patient communication (including the doctor's attitude, the patient's participation with the medical decision and information about the disease) and QOL (quality of life), as measured using FACT-B. Univariate analysis, non-conditional logistic regression was used to evaluate the associations between the doctor-patient communication and QOL. Results: Females who received good attitudes from doctors demonstrated higher FACT-B (OR=4.65, 95% CI: 1.68-12.86), social well-being (OR=5.88, 95% CI: 2.16-16.05), emotional well-being (OR=4.77, 95% CI: 1.92-11.88), and functional well-being ((OR=5.26, 95% CI: 1.90-14.52) compared to the females who encountered worse attitudes from their doctor, adjusting for age, education, marriage, employment, family income, years since diagnosis, TNM stage, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and side effects, particularly when the TNM stage was 0-II and the patients exhibited no side effects. Regardless of the length of time after diagnosis, doctors' good attitudes resulted in higher QOL scores. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the doctor-patient communication has a significant association with the QOL of breast cancer survivors, mainly dependent on the doctors' attitude. Effective intervention is required to develop optimal doctor-patient communication.
