Comparative studies on the adsorption capacity of two synthetic fibers, polyamide (PA 66) and polyester (PET) pre-treated with N-cetylpyridinium chloride (PET-NCPCl), towards graphene oxide (GO) have been carried out. The fiber samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The results of adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and zeta potential determinations as a function of the GO concentration, pH, and temperature show that at a low pH of 2.5 and a high temperature of 323 K, almost 99 % of the 75 mg/l GO solution is adsorbed onto PA 66 and 70 % onto the PET-NCPCl fibers. The interaction should be first attributed to electrostatic forces, also the adsorption data exhibited a good fit to the Freundlich isotherm model and the free energy value of 10 kJ/mol was in the range of physical adsorption, which could suggest that the interaction is driven mainly by physical forces. Due to the increasing development of wastewater treatments based on the GO reactivity with metals and cationic contaminants, synthetic fibers coated with GO could be considered an adsorbent for environmental applications.
Die Skepsis gegenuber einer von Hegel beeinfluβten Geschichtsauffassung, fur die Geschichte der sich selber realisierende Begriff ist, wird durch die Einwirkung Schopenhauers noch verstarkt. Denn darin ist sich Grillparzer mit diesem einig : Die Geschichtswissenschaft hat es mit dem Bereich des Einzelnen und Zufalligen zu tun, der in seiner Wandelbarket und Zusammenhanglosikeit immer unvollkommen und fragwurdig bleiben muβ. So ist Grillparzer von einer gehobenen, romantischen Bewertung der Geschichtsstoffe weit entrernt, weil in jedem Falle die Leistung des Dichters erst in der hinzukommenden Verknupfung und Motivierung der Begebengeiten liegt. Seine Begriffe von Zweckmaβigkeit nach auβen einem Ganzen unterschiebt, das wohl nur eine nach innen kennt. Absicht findet, wo keine war, Plan, wo an kein Voraussehen zu denken, und wieder Zufall, wo tausend kleine Ursachen wirkten. Da es nun aber nicht die Begebenheiten, sondern ihre Berbindung und Begrundung ist, worauf es dem Dichter ankommt, so laβt ihn in Gottes Namen sich auf seine Begebenheiten selbst finden, wenn es anders dazu Lust hat. Die Dichtung bringt also erst den Zusammenhand und die Notwendigkeit, die die Geschichte von sich aus nicht besitzt, wahrend fur die romantische auffassung umgekehrt der Geschichtsdichter nur der treue Mittler fur den groβen Genius der Geschtichte ist.

The goal of this study was to statistically analyse the variability of global irradiance and ultraviolet erythemal (UVER) irradiance and their interrelationships with global and UVER irradiance, global clearness indices and ozone. A prediction of short-term UVER solar irradiance values was also obtained. Extreme values of UVER irradiance were included in the data set, as well as a time series of ultraviolet irradiance variability (UIV). The study period was from 2005 to 2014 and approximately 250,000 readings were taken at 5-min intervals. The effect of the clearness indices on global irradiance variability (GIV) and UIV was also recorded and bi-dimensional distributions were used to gather information on the two measured variables. With regard to daily GIVand UIV, it is also shown that for global clearness index (kt) values lower than 0.6 both global and UVER irradiance had greater variability and that UIVon cloud-free days (kt higher than 0.65) exceeds GIV. To study the dependence between UIVand GIV the χ2 statistical method was used. It can be concluded that there is a 95% probability of a clear dependency between the variabilities.A connection between high kt (corresponding to cloudless days) and low variabilities was found in the analysis of bidimensional distributions. Extreme values of UVER irradiance were also analyzed and it was possible to calculate the probable future values of UVER irradiance by extrapolating the values of the adjustment curve obtained from the Gumbel distribution.
The strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) columns by steel angles and strips (steel cage) is one of various techniques available to increase ultimate column load. Different authors have shown the influence of the beam-column joint on the behaviour of columns strengthened by steel cages. This paper presents an experimental study carried out at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia with the aim of analysing two different techniques to solve the strengthening close to the joint and the influence on the behaviour of RC columns strengthened steel cages. The ultimate loads obtained in the laboratory tests for these two techniques are compared to that specified by Eurocode 4.
Digital images do not represent anatomy, they are just a reliable translation from a full-colored and three-dimensional physical world to a grayscale and two dimensions image domain. As a consequence of the imaging technologies disruption in the medical field, a vertiginous “race to see” had been seeking higher definitions. This process got closer and even exceed human naked-eye resolution and the human brain skills to decode gray-scale bidimensional pictures. In the diagnostic field, as a result, the last decade showed important technological advances addressing this issue and computer-aided detection and diagnosis emerged to complement and enhance radiologist frameworks. In this new era methodologies designed to extract more information from images are a must. Radiomics addressed this item using images as datasets, focusing in the region of interest and extracting features, allowing reproducibility, and finally introducing radiology into the quantitative sciences. Technological disruption in medical imaging also found momentum in the therapeutics arena, empowering a bunch of audacious surgeons to perform less invasive procedures with more confidence and precision, finally launching and shaping the image-guided surgery (IGS) discipline. Here instead, there is no “use as data” counter-part and surgeOmics is the first proposed approach. A wide range of semantic and agnostic features can be extracted from the different phases of the IGS’s workflow, like entry point coordinates, angle, distance, target location, amongst the most important ones. In summary, we are coining the surgeOmics neologism to name this approach, which holds great promises to deal with future demands. It has the potential to improve surgeon-hardware interaction and its central hypothesis is that distinctive algorithms using images as data can provide valuable information for personalized and precision surgery in the era of robotics and intelligent automation. SurgeOmics has emerged from IGS, but can be applied to other wide range of medical problems.
This paper presents the development of some numerical models based on the results of laboratory tests performed on axially loaded RC columns strengthened with steel angles and strips. These numerical models consider the nonlinearity of the building materials and the effects of the contact interfaces between different materials. The results of the finite element models accurately describe the general behaviour of the strengthened columns. This study allows engineers to assess the relative importance of the mechanisms acting on the strengthened RC columns. Constructive recommendations are also provided in this paper.

Purpose Patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) have an increased risk for comorbid autoimmune diseases. In this retrospective multicenter study of CSU patients, we evaluated clinical and laboratory features of CSU associated with a higher risk of comorbid autoimmune diseases. Methods We analyzed records of CSU patients (n = 1,199) for a history or presence of autoimmune diseases. Patients were diagnosed with type IIb autoimmune CSU (aiCSU) if all 3 tests were positive: autologous serum skin test (ASST), basophil histamine release assay (BHRA) and/or basophil activation test (BAT), and IgG autoantibodies against FcεRIα/IgE detected by immunoassay. Results Twenty-eight percent of CSU patients had at least 1 autoimmune disease. The most prevalent autoimmune diseases were Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) (≥ 21%) and vitiligo (2%). Two percent of CSU patients had ≥ 2 autoimmune diseases, most frequently HT plus vitiligo. Comorbid autoimmune diseases, in patients with CSU, were associated with female sex, a family history of autoimmune diseases, and higher rates of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism (P < 0.001). Presence of autoimmune diseases was linked to aiCSU (P = 0.02). The risks of having autoimmune diseases were 1.7, 2.9 and 3.3 times higher for CSU patients with a positive ASST, BHRA and BAT, respectively. In CSU patients, markers for autoimmune diseases, antinuclear antibodies and/or IgG anti-thyroid antibodies were associated with non-response to omalizumab treatment (P = 0.013). Conclusions In CSU, autoimmune diseases are common and linked to type IIb autoimmune CSU. Our results suggest that physicians assess and monitor all adult patients with CSU for signs and symptoms of common autoimmune diseases, especially HT and vitiligo.
Although the frequency of ingested foreign bodies is high, Penetration and migration is a rare and dangerous condition, with possible lethal compli-cations. We report an infrequently case of migratory fish bone in the neck, treated with mini-invasive image guided surgery.
