        Summary and Comparison of Five Communicative Competence Models

        Byun, Gilja. 2015. Summary and comparison of five communicative competence models. Journal of Linguistics Studies, 20(1), 119-132. On the basis of communicative competence models suggested by Canale & Swain (1980), Canale (1983), Bachman (1990), Bachman and Palmer (1996) and Chapell, Grabe and Berns (1997), this paper deals with not only their summaries and comparisons but also their influence on second language teaching and testing. As the result of analyzing the main changes of the models in a chronological order, the following theoretical points are emphasized: 1) language use ability as well as language knowledge, 2) the integrative or holistic model through interactions among components in contrast to the discrete model, 3) the hierarchical and multi-level model instead of the linear model, 4) appropriate language use in a certain context by introducing sociolinguistic competence, 5) function in language use by presenting pragmatic competence, 6) cognitive skills by introducing and elaborating strategic competence, 7) affective factors and personal characteristics in performance. In accordance with these theoretical changes of the models, second language teaching and testing methods should be innovated. Language testing should include language performance as well as language ability and it should be an integrative test reflecting four skills. Likewise, teaching methods should be developed so that learners can use their strategic, functional, sociolinguistic and background competence, but not the previous memorization method in de-contextualized situations.         A Study on Translationeses in English-Korean Translation

        Byun, Gilja & Kim, Wonbo. 2014. A Study on Translationeses in English Korean-Translation. Journal of Linguistic Studies 19(3), 149-180. This study analyzes translationeses in English-Korean translation on the basis of target text oriented readibility, which means how natural readers feel whey they read translated texts in disregard of source text. Sixteen categories on the five levels were used to classify translationeses found in 44 English-Korean translation assignments about two English texts. As a result of analyzing translationeses, four interesting facts were found. Firstly, students made more translationeses in certain categories such as plural, redundant word and postposition. Secondly, the two texts showed similar translationese distribution except loanwords and numerals influenced by ST. Thirdly, students did not make progress in translation for five weeks. Fouthly, sentences in TTs were longer than those in STs, which makes it difficult to understand TTs. (Macquarie University․Jeju National University)

        Analysis on a multimodal text

        This paper analyzes the contribution of factors other than language such as images, font size and shape, colors, layout, etc, in understanding four features: 1) the information genre, 2) the experiential meaning on science topic, 3) the interpersonal meaning associated with the subjective and objective relationship between the author and readers, and 4) the textual meaning on the logical meaning of the text. For this analysis, a scientific information text (one of the multimodal texts) describing the sun is used. The analysis shows that the multimodal text contributes to the readability of the text through harmonization - i.e., harmonizing the language with the use of semiotic resources aside from the language itself. This paper is meaningful in that it analyzed how semiotic elements can be in harmony with language to increase readability in the situation where the research on the multimodal text has hardly been conducted.         자기효능감을 강조한 NCS기반 항공객실승무원 교육의 학습전이 효과에 대한 연구

        이 논문의 목적은 NCS기반 항공객실승무원 교육의 학습전이효과를 종합적으로 분석하는 것이다. 그 방법으로서 우선 이와 관련된 최근 선행연구의 결과들을 비교분석하여 교육적 문제점을 지적하고, 다음 그 해결방안으로서 자기효능감을 강조한 문제중심 학습법을 제시한다. 산학간 협력모델로서 2015년에 도입된 NCS 학습모듈과 그것에 기초한 대학들의 교육은 아직까지 학생들의 자기효능감을 극대화하지 못하고 있다. 이 현상을 극복하는 방안은 채용으로 이어지는 객실승무원 자격제도를 수립해야 하고, 항공사가 구직자들에게 요구하고 있는 영어와 체력 그리고 직업의식을 교육 프로그램에 담는 것이다. 더하여 가장 중요한 것으로서 실제상황에 가까운 문제를 피교육자가 단독 또는 공동으로 직접 해결해가는 체험 또는 실천형 프로그램을 모색해야 한다. 이 연구는 그 동안 많은 연구자들이 지적해온 자기효능감 저하의 문제에 대한 해결책을 제시했다는 점에서 시의성을 가지고 있다. This paper aims to analyze the effect of learning transfer of the NCS-based education of cabin crew. As a method, it first points to the educational problems by comparing and analyzing the results of the recent precedent research, and then presents a problem-based learning emphasizing self-efficacy as a solution. As an industry-academy cooperation model, the NCS learning modules introduced in 2015 and the college or university education centered on them have not maximized the students’ self-efficacy so far. The counter-measure to this phenomenon is to establish the system of license for cabin crew that will lead to employment and add the studying programs of English, physical fitness, and work ethic that airlines expect from the job seekers. As the most crucial way, experiential or practical programs should be sought for the learners to try to solve the problems resembling the real-life situations. This study has timeliness in providing a solution to the dilemma of low self-efficacy pointed out much by researchers in the meanwhile.

      • 실험계획법을 이용한 고속 회전 BLDC 모터의 냉각 시스템 최적화

        It is of great importance to decrease the maximum temperatures of electric motors as low as possible, particularly in motor coils in terms of durability and reliability issues. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis were performed to figure out heat transfer phenomena in advanced brushless direct current motors (BLDCs). Various heat source terms by reversible and irreversible energy losses were modeled to demonstrate temperature distributions in computation domains of high speed BLDC motors under diverse operating conditions, followed by heat transfer analysis for the optimal designs of motor cooling pipes. Design of experiment (DOE) methods were adopted to find out the most efficient cooling pipe specifications such as pipe diameter, pipe thickness, the number of turns, and water flow rate through the pipe. Heat transfer rates in the radial direction through solid stators and in the axial direction through the central rotating shaft are compared to calculate heat collection rates by the cooling pipes. In addition, three-dimensional temperature distributions are presented to account for the effects of the geometric and operating parameters on the maximum temperatures of stator coils. Finally, the optimal design parameters of the cooling pipe systems are comprehensively determined by analyzing both maximum temperature of electrical motors and pressure drop in the motor cooling pipe.

        What are the driving factors of continuing tuition increase?

        본 연구의 목적은 고등교육 분야에서 핵심적인 연구 주제인 지속적인 등록금 인상 요인은 무엇인가라는 질문에 답하는 것이다. 등록금 인상은 과거 수 십 년에 거쳐 물가지수보다 빠른 증가율을 보여 왔다. 이에 본 연구는 American Institute of Research가 과거 23년 동안 수집된 IPEDS(Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System)의 고등교육재정 데이터에 기초해 공ㆍ사립 대학 간 수입 지출 항목 비교가 가능하도록 재구조화해 놓은 델타비용분석 프로젝트(Delta Cost Project) 데이터를 분석함으로써, 고등교육 공동체가 등록금 관련 정책을 수립할 때 유용한 등록금 인상요인에 관한 중요한 정보를 제공하고자 한다. 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해서 본 연구는 위계적 성장모형(Hierarchical Linear Growth Model)을 적용함으로써 기존의 관련 연구들이 보이는 한계를 극복한다. 한 대학을 23년 동안 반복적으로 측정한 데이터는 변인들 간 다중공선성을 피할 수 없는 바, 그렇게 내재된 데이터를 분석하는 기법으로 위계적 성장 모형이 적절하다. 본 연구의 분석결과는 등록금 상승은 고등교육비 부담의 주체가 정부라는 공적인 영역에서 소비자인 학생에게 이전되는 과정에서 생겨난 필연적인 결과물이며, 따라서 이 문제에 대한 고등교육 공동체의 합의가 필요함을 보여준다. 또한, 공립과 사립대학들을 포괄하는 모형보다는 사립대학 모형이 분산의 더 많은 부분을 설명함을 밝혔다. 아울러 각각의 대학 단위의 어떠한 수입 및 지출 항목들이 등록금 인상에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 작용하는 지를 밝혔다. The purpose of this study is to address the fundamental question central to higher education constituents across the globe: What cause the faster-than-inflation increases in college tuition and required fees? Drawing on the panel data organized by the American Institute of Research and housed at the National Center for Education Statistics, this research provides private and public 4-year universities with critical information needed to more fully understand the relationship between the rate of tuition increase and expenditure structures. Applying a Hierarchical Linear Growth Model, this study analyzes past 23 years of finance data between 1987 and 2010 and efficiently controls the intrinsic nested nature of the data collected by repeated measures. The study finds the revenue shift from public sector to consumers, which opens up the needs of straight talk on how we should see the higher education and who should pay the costs. The study walks through the detailed associations between each predictor modeled and keep increasing tuition and fees, the price of higher education.
