        보이드 기번즈 숲과 문화 연구회 1999 숲과 문화 Vol.8 No.2

        미국의 자연사가이자 산림가인 환경윤리학의 대부 알도 레오폴드(Aldo Leopold, 1887-1948)의 생애와 사상을 다룬 보이드 기번즈의 글 ‘알도 레오포르: 한 항속적 수준의 가치관’은 모두 6부분이다. 즉 1. 인물, 2. 어린 시절에서 장년까지, 3. 교수 그리고 아버지, 4. 주말 판자집, 5. 글쓰기, 6. 항속적 수준의 가치관인데 이 중 뒤의 세 부분을 싣는다. (내셔널 지오그래픽 (1981) 160(5) : 682-708). 번역문에 대해 꼼꼼한 조언을 주신 탁광일박사에게 감사의 뜻을 전한다. 다음 호에는 환경의식이 있는 ‘한국 지식인이 어떻게 ’미국‘의 알도 레오폴드를 읽을 것인가라는 화두에 대한 번역자 나름대로의 대답을 열거해 보는 글 ’레오폴드 읽기‘가 이어질 예정이다.

        미국의 자연사가, 산림가, 환경윤리학의 대부인 알도 레오폴드는 숲과문화를 통해 수차례 소개된바 있다. 알도 레오폴드의 에세이 '토지윤리'가 1993년에 처음 두 차례로 나누어 번역소개 되었고(탁광일 역, 숲과문화 제2권 1, 2호), 다시 그의 환경윤리학 전체를 지칭하는 '토지윤리'의 현대적 조명을 둘러싼 Journal of Forestry의 부 논문, 곧 산림가 보리스 제이드의 '알도 레오폴드 토지윤리를 보는 새로운 시각'과 철학자 베어드 캘리컷의 '레오폴드의 토지윤리를 보는 새로운 시각에 대한 비판적 검토'가 1998년에 소개되었다 (탁광일 역, 숲과문화 제 7권 3, 5호) 그의 생애 전체에 대해서는 많은 부분이 소개되지 않은 까닭에 역자가 상당기간 동안 마땅한 글을 물색해 왔는데, 이제 그렇게 오래된 글이 아니면서 필자가 직접 가족, 친지, 학생들과, 인터뷰한 취재물들도 포함시킨 글을 발굴하였기에 독자들에게 소개한다. 그의 생애와 사상을 긴요하게 잘 정리해 주고 있다. 두 차례에 걸쳐 연재하는 이 번역문은 미국에서 발행되는 지성잡지 내셔널 지오그래픽 1981년 5월호 (제160권5호) 682-708쪽에 실린 보이드 기번즈의 글 Aldo Leopold: A Durable Scale of Values의 완역이다. 원문에도 6개의 부문으로 나뉘어져 있지만 1. 인물, 2. 어린시절에서 장년까지, 3. 교수 그리고 아버지, 4. 주말판자집생활, 5. 글쓰기, 6. 항속적 수준의 가치관이라는 6개의 소제목은 번역자가 부가하였다. 이번호에는 앞의 세부분을, 다음호에는 위의 세부분을 싣는다. 번역문에 대해 꼼꼼한 조언을 주신 탁광일님에게 감사의 뜻을 전한다. 세 번째 연재물로는 환경의식이 있는 '한국'지식인이 어떻게 '미국'의 알도 레오폴드를 읽을 것인가라는 화두에 대한 번역자 나름대로의 대답들을 열거해보는 글 '레오폴드 읽기'가 준비된다.

      • Conditional genetic deletion of Ano1 in interstitial cells of Cajal impairs Ca<sup>2+</sup> transients and slow waves in adult mouse small intestine

        <P>Myenteric plexus interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC-MY) in the small intestine are Kit(+) electrical pacemakers that express the Ano1/TMEM16A Ca2+ -activated Cl- channel, whose functions in the gastrointestinal tract remain incompletely understood. In this study, an inducible Cre-LoxP-based approach was used to advance the understanding of Ano1 in ICC-MY of adult mouse small intestine. Kit(CreERT2/+); Ano1(Fl/Fl) mice were treated with tamoxifen or vehicle, and small intestines (mucosa free) were examined. Quantitative RTPCR demonstrated similar to 50% reduction in Ano1 mRNA in intestines of conditional knockouts (cKOs) compared with vehicle-treated controls. Whole mount immunohistochemistry showed a mosaic/patchy pattern loss of Ano1 protein in ICC networks. Ca2+ transients in ICC-MY network of cKOs displayed reduced duration compared with highly synchronized controls and showed synchronized and desynchronized profiles. When matched, the rank order for Ano1 expression in Ca2+ signal imaged fields of view was as follows: vehicle controls > > > cKO(synchronized) > cKO(desynchronized). Maintenance of Ca2+ transients' synchronicity despite high loss of Ano1 indicates a large functional reserve of Ano1 in the ICC-MY network. Slow waves in cKOs displayed reduced duration and increased inter-slow-wave interval and occurred in regular-and irregular-amplitude oscillating patterns. The latter activity suggested ongoing interaction by independent interacting oscillators. Lack of slow waves and depolarization, previously reported for neonatal constitutive knockouts, were also seen. In summary, Ano1 in adults regulates gastrointestinal function by determining Ca2+ transients and electrical activity depending on the level of Ano1 expression. Partial Ano1 loss results in Ca2+ transients and slow waves displaying reduced duration, while complete and widespread absence of Ano1 in ICC-MY causes lack of slow wave and desynchronized Ca2+ transients.</P>

        The use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist post-ovulation trigger in ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome

        The purpose of this paper is to assimilate all data pertaining to the use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonists in in vitro fertilization cycles after ovulation trigger to reduce the symptoms of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). A systematic review of the literature was performed to identify all studies performed on the use of a GnRH antagonist in IVF cycle post-ovulation trigger with patients at high risk for OHSS. Ten studies were identified and reviewed. Descriptions of the studies and their individual results are presented in the following manuscript. Due to significant heterogeneity among the studies, it was not possible to perform a group analysis. The use of GnRH antagonists post-ovulation trigger for treatment of OHSS has been considered for almost 20 years, though research into its use is sparse. Definitive conclusions and recommendations cannot be made at this time, though preliminary data from these trials demonstrate the potential for GnRH antagonists to play a role in the treatment of OHSS in certain patient populations.

        Validation of the Korean version of the Boston Autonomic Symptom Questionnaire

        Background and Purpose The Boston Autonomic Symptom Questionnaire (BASQ) is a quantitative tool using a numeric rating scale to assess the symptoms of systemic dysautonomia, including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, urinary, sudomotor, vasomotor, and sexual functions. The aim of this study was to validate the Korean version of the BASQ (KBASQ). Methods Prospectively enrolled subjects who submitted to autonomic function tests, including tests for cardiovagal, adrenergic, and sudomotor functions, also completed the KBASQ and the Korean version of the Orthostatic Grading Scale (KOGS), a validated questionnaire for assessing orthostatic symptoms.Twenty-eight subjects completed the KBASQ twice to assess test-retest reliability. We classified the subjects to dysautonomia or normal control group according to dysautonomic symptoms and the results of autonomic function tests. Results This study enrolled 225 subjects aged 54.0±18.1 years (mean±standard deviation), with a male/female ratio of 1/1.03. The internal validity of the KBASQ was excellent (Cronbach’s α=0.922), and that of each of its subscales ranged from excellent to acceptable (Cronbach’s α=0.709–0.952). The test-retest reliability was good, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.354 to 0.917. The subcategory scores for the KBASQ were significantly higher in the dysautonomia group than in the normal control group. There were significant correlations among the items in the KBASQ and KOGS. There was also a significant correlation between KBASQ scores and the results of the autonomic function tests. Conclusions The internal validity and reliability of the KBASQ were good, indicating that it may be a useful screening tool for the systematic evaluation of autonomic symptoms in patients with dysautonomia.

        Phase and Electrical Properties of PZT Thin Films Embedded with CuO Nano-Particles by a Hybrid Sol-Gel Route

        Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 or PZT thin films embedded with CuO nano-particles were successfully prepared by a hybrid sol-gel process. In this process, CuO (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 1 wt. %) nanopowder was suspended in an organometallic solution of PZT, and then coated on platinised silicon substrate using a spin-coating technique. The influence of CuO nano-particles’ dispersion on the phase of PZT thin films was investigated. XRD results showed a perovskite phase in all films. At the CuO concentration of 0.4 - 1 wt. %, a second phase was observed. The addition of CuO nano-particles affected the orientation of PZT thin films. The addition was also found to reduce the ferroelectric properties of PZT thin films. However, at 0.2 wt. % CuO concentration, the film exhibited good ferroelectric properties similar to those of PZT films. In addition, the fatigue retention properties of the PZT/CuO system was observed, and it showed 14% fatigue at 108 switching bipolar pulse cycles while the fatigue in PZT thin films was found to be 17% at the same switching bipolar pulse cycles.

        Hydrogen Absorption in Ti45Zr38-xNi17+x Quasicrystals and Measurements of the Equilibrium Vapor Pressure

        To evaluate their technological usefulness and to probe the local structure of the quasicrystal, p-c-T curves were measured for as-quenched Ti_(45)Zr_(38)Ni_(17) and Ti_(45)Zr_(30)Ni_(25) quasicrystal ribbons at 350℃ with a computer-controlled apparatus. For both quasicrystals, the p-c-T curves do not exhibit a clear pressure plateau. Instead, the equilibrium vapor pressure remains low ($lt; 5 torn) below H/M ◎1; it increases sharply for increasing H/M. Such p-c-T curves may reflect structural features of the quasicrystal. Due to the formation of the crystal hydride phase during the p-c-T measurements, however, the site energy distribution in the quasicrystals could not be obtained. Instead, qualitative conclusions are presented. For Ti_(45)Zr_(38)Ni_(17) quasicrystals, estimates of the site energy distribution for hydrogen suggest a prominent site located between -0.2 eV and -0.15 eV with a possible broad, weakly binding second peak at higher energy. The site energy locations for hydrogen for Ti_(45)Zr_(30)Ni_(25) quasicrystals are similar. The Ti_(45)Zr_(38)Ni_(17) quasicrystals desorb most of the absorbed hydrogen at 650℃ in one hour by continuous pumping without phase transformation, and do not become powder after three cycles.
