        Trends of Mortality, Time, and Causes of Death in Preterm Infants

        Objective: Although survival rate of preterm infants in Korea has increased in the past several decades, it seems to be stable recently. The objective of this study is to evaluate the mortality rate of preterm infants in a single center in Korea between 2009 and 2018. Methods: Preterm infants with gestational age (GA) <30 weeks who were admitted to Busan Paik Hospital (January 2009 to December 2018) were enrolled. Results: The overall mortality rate was 20.8%. Mortality rate decreased from 21.9% in 2009 to 9.2% in 2012. It then increased and reached a plateau at 20%. Mortality rate was 80.0% in those with GA of 22 weeks. It then decreased with increasing GA. It was 2.9% in those with GA of 29 weeks. The risk of death decreased by 0.573 times when GA increased by 1 week. Death immediately after birth was high in infants with GA of 22 weeks. It was rare in infants with GA ≥25 weeks. Death within 24 hours after birth was high in infants with GA ≤24 weeks who were delivered precipitately without appropriate perinatal support. Sepsis was the leading cause of all deaths. High grade intraventricular hemorrhage was the second common cause of death, especially in infants with GA ≤24 weeks. Conclusion: Mortality rate of preterm infants in this study did not decrease. Modifiable factors including delivery with appropriate supports of neonatal resuscitation team and sufficient maternal obstetric care, especially maternal infection control might reduce mortality, especially immediate postnatal death.

        간찰 부위에서 발생한 전신형 고리 육아종 1예

        Granuloma annulare (GA) is a common non-infectious granulomatous disease. Generalized GA is the second most common variant of GA. It is often associated with recalcitrant disease progression despite treatment. The lesion of generalized GA typically presents widespread papules that coalesce to form annular plaques over the whole body. We report a case of a patient with disseminated papules and coalescing annular plaques, primarily involving the intertriginous area and mimicking tinea corporis or cruris. Histopathological findings confirmed the lesion as GA. This case underscored the unusual clinical presentation of generalized GA. A case of GA localized to the intertriginous area has rarely been reported. Given the recalcitrant nature of the disease, dermatologists should consider generalized GA as a differential diagnosis in patients with an annular lesion involving the intertriginous area. Thus, we report this as an atypical case of generalized GA localized to the intertriginous area. (Korean J Dermatol 2021;59(10):797∼800)

        이종접합 Gate 구조를 갖는 수평형 NiO/Ga<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> FET의 전기적 특성 연구

        Gallium Oxide (Ga<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>) is preferred as a material for next generation power semiconductors. The Ga<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> should solve the disadvantages of low thermal resistance characteristics and difficulty in forming an inversion layer through p-type ion implantation. However, Ga<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> is difficult to inject p-type ions, so it is being studied in a heterojunction structure using p-type oxides, such as NiO, SnO, and Cu<sub>2</sub>O. Research the lateral-type FET structure of NiO/Ga<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> heterojunction under the Gate contact using the Sentaurus TCAD simulation. At this time, the VG-ID and VD-ID curves were identified by the thickness of the Epi-region (channel) and the doping concentration of NiO of 1 × 10<sup>17</sup> to 1 × 10<sup>19</sup> cm<sup>-3</sup>. The increase in Epi region thickness has a lower threshold voltage from -4.4 V to -9.3 V at I<sub>D</sub> = 1 × 10<sup>-8</sup> mA/mm, as current does not flow only when the depletion of the PN junction extends to the Epi/Sub interface. As an increase of NiO doping concentration, increases the depletion area in Ga<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> region and a high electric field distribution on PN junction, and thus the breakdown voltage increases from 512 V to 636 V at I<sub>D</sub> =1 × 10<sup>-3</sup> A/mm.

        Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas L.) Juice as a Potential Source of Biological Compounds

        Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.), apple (Malus domestica Borkh. cultivars Jonagold and Red Boskoop), pear (Pyrus communis cv. Conference), and plum (Prunus domestica L. cv. Common Plum) juices were assayed for their quality, organic acids, polyphenol content, and antioxidant activity (determined as a ferric-reducing antioxidant power [FRAP]). Cornelian cherry juice revealed the highest titratable acidity—2.58 g malic acid/100 g. The highest polyphenol content was also noted for Cornelian cherry—45.6 mg gallic acid (GA)/g. The medium level of polyphenols was proved for Jonagold apple (22.8 mg GA1/g). The lowest level was recorded for Common Plum (9.60 mg GA/g), followed by Conference pear and Red Boskoop apple (12.3 and 21.3 mg GA/g, respectively). The FRAP values were 1.97 mmol Fe/L for Common Plum juice, 2.37 mmol Fe/L for Conference pear juice, and 3.92 mmol Fe/L for both Red Boskoop and Jonagold apple juices. However, the obtained data indicated outstanding antioxidant properties for Cornelian cherry juice. In this case, FRAP reached 23.5 mmol Fe/L. The calculated correlation coefficient FRAP versus polyphenols indicates that the antioxidant status for Cornelian cherry is not only correlated with polyphenols but also with other biological compounds. The obtained results indicated that Cornelian cherry is a valuable source of substances with a high antioxidant activity.

      • Identification of Ellagitannins in Black Raspberry Seeds and Optimization of Accelerated Solvent Extraction of Ellagitannins Using Artificial Neural Network Coupled with Genetic Algorithm

        This study aimed to identify ellagitannins in black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis) seeds (BS) and to optimize accelerated solvent extraction of ellagitannins using artificial neural network (ANN) coupled with genetic algorithm (GA). Ellagitannins were fractionated using Amberlite XAD-16N and Sephadex LH-20 resins. The ellagitannin fraction was qualitatively analyzed by HPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS. BS had mainly monomeric and dimeric ellagitannins such as pedunculagin, castalagin, acutissimin A, sanguiin H-10, casuarictin, sanguiin H-2, sanguiin H-6, and sanguiin H-6 without a gallic moiety. For ANN modeling, extraction time (3-9 min), extraction temperature (40-70°C), and solvent concentration (50-100% acetone) were set as independent input variables, and total ellagitannin content was set as output variable. The ANN of this study had an input layer with three neurons, a hidden layer with ten neurons, and an output layer with one neuron. The optimal extraction conditions of the total ellagitannin content were predicted by the trained ANN coupled with GA. This study is the first attempt to analyze ellagitannin content in BS.

        Oxide Glasses for Holographic Data Storage

        Novel photochromic oxide glasses are presented in this section. These glasses are based on phosphate formers containing both tungsten and antimony atoms. Exposure to visible continuous or pulsed laser beam results in an intense photochromic effect witch is shown to occur in the volume of the glass and results in a broad absorption band in the visible and near infrared. This effect was not identified to be related with a sσuctural change and is assumed to be entirely electronic. A change in the absorption coefficient is observed in function of tungsten content, exposure time and increases with beam power. These glasses have been investigated regarding the possibilty of holographic data storage using visible lasers sources. Changes in both refractive index and the absorption coefficient were measured using a holographic setup. The modulation of the optical constants is reversible by heat treatment.

        Evaluation of Antibacterial Activity against Salmonella Enteritidis

        Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis is a well-known pathogenic bacterium responsible for human gastrointestinal enteritis mainly due to the consumption of eggs and egg-products. The first aim of this work was to study several virulence factors of a strain isolated from egg content: SEovo. First, bacterial growth was studied at several temperatures and cell morphology was observed by scanning electronic microscopy. These experiments showed Salmonella’s ability to grow at low temperatures and to produce exoproducts. Next, Salmonella motility was observed performing swimming, twitching, and swarming tests. Results indicated a positive flagellar activity and the cell ability to differentiate and become hyperflagellated under specific conditions. Moreover, SEovo adherence and biofilm formation was carried out. All of these tests enabled us to conclude that SEovo is a potential pathogen, thus it can be used as a model to perform antibacterial experiments. The second part of the study was dedicated to the evaluation of the antibacterial activity of different molecules using several methods. The antibacterial effect of silver and copper aluminosilicates was tested by two different kinds of methods. On the one hand, the effect of these two antibacterial agents was determined using microbiological methods: viable cell count and agar-well diffusion. And on the other hand, the antibacterial activity was evaluated using CLSM and SYTO Red/SYTOX Green dyeing. CLSM allowed for the evaluation of the biocide on sessile cells, whereas the first methods did not. Results showed that adhered bacteria were more resistant than planktonic counterparts and that CLSM was a good alternative to evaluate antibacterial activity on fixed bacteria without having to carry out a removing step.

        Influence of reconstruction parameters of micro-computed tomography on the analysis of bone mineral density

        Purpose: This study was conducted evaluate the influence of reconstruction parameters of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) images on bone mineral density (BMD) analyses. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of micro-CT images of the maxillae of 5 Wistar rats, acquired using a SkyScan 1174 unit (Bruker, Kontich, Belgium). Each acquisition was reconstructed following the manufacturer’s recommendations (standard protocol; SP) for the application of artifact correction tools (beam hardening correction [BHC], 45%; smoothing filter, degree 2; and ring artifact correction [RAC], level 5). Additionally, images were reconstructed with 36 protocols combining different settings of artifact correction tools (P0 to P35). BMD analysis was performed for each reconstructed image. The BMD values obtained for each protocol were compared to those obtained using the SP through repeated-measures analysis of variance with the Dunnett post hoc test (α=0.05). Results: The BMD values obtained from all protocols that used a BHC of 45% did not significantly differ from those obtained using the SP (P>0.05). The other protocols all yielded significantly different BMD values from the SP (P<0.05). The smoothing and RAC tools did not affect BMD values. Conclusion: BMD values measured on micro-CT images were influenced by the BHC level. Higher levels of BHC induced higher values of BMD.

        The cellular response to plasma membrane disruption for nanomaterial delivery

        Delivery of nanomaterials into cells is of interest for fundamental cell biological research as well as for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. One way of doing so is by physically disrupting the plasma membrane (PM). Several methods that exploit electrical, mechanical or optical cues have been conceived to temporarily disrupt the PM for intracellular delivery, with variable effects on cell viability. However, apart from acute cytotoxicity, subtler effects on cell physiology may occur as well. Their nature and timing vary with the severity of the insult and the efficiency of repair, but some may provoke permanent phenotypic alterations. With the growing palette of nanoscale delivery methods and applications, comes a need for an in-depth understanding of this cellular response. In this review, we summarize current knowledge about the chronology of cellular events that take place upon PM injury inflicted by different delivery methods. We also elaborate on their significance for cell homeostasis and cell fate. Based on the crucial nodes that govern cell fitness and functionality, we give directions for fine-tuning nano-delivery conditions.

        Magnitude of beam-hardening artifacts produced by gutta-percha and metal posts on conebeam computed tomography with varying tube current

        Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the magnitude of artifacts produced by gutta-percha and metal posts on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans obtained with different tube currents and with or without metal artifact reduction (MAR). Materials and Methods: A tooth was inserted in a dry human mandible socket, and CBCT scans were acquired after root canal instrumentation, root canal filling, and metal post placement with various tube currents with and without MAR activation. The artifact magnitude was assessed by the standard deviation (SD) of gray values and the contrastto- noise ratio (CNR) at the various distances from the tooth. Data were compared using multi-way analysis of variance. Results: At all distances, a current of 4 mA was associated with a higher SD and a lower CNR than 8 mA or 10 mA (P<0.05). For the metal posts without MAR, the artifact magnitude as assessed by SD was greatest at 1.5 cm or less (P<0.05). When MAR was applied, SD values for distances 1.5 cm or closer to the tooth were reduced (P<0.05). MAR usage did not influence the magnitude of artifacts in the control and gutta-percha groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: Increasing the tube current from 4 mA to 8 mA may reduce the magnitude of artifacts from metal posts. The magnitude of artifacts arising from metal posts was significantly higher at distances of 1.5 cm or less than at greater distances. MAR usage improved image quality near the metal post, but had no significant influence farther than 1.5 cm from the tooth.
