        Vibration control of hysteretic base-isolated structures: an LMI approach

        Seismic isolation systems are essentially designed to preserve structural safety, prevent occupants injury and properties damage. An active saturated LMI-based control design is proposed to attenuate seismic disturbances in base-isolated structures under saturation actuators. Using a mathematical model of an eight-storied building structure, an active control algorithm is designed. Performance evaluation of the controller is carried out in a simplified model version of a benchmark building system, which is recognized as a state-of-the-art model for numerical experiments of structures under seismic perturbations. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is robust with respect to model and seismic perturbations. Finally, the performance indices show that the proposed controller behaves satisfactorily and with a reasonable control effort.

        Developing cheese tourism: a local-based perspective from Valle de Roncal (Navarra, Spain)

        This paper aims to investigate the opinions of local cheese producers with regard to the relationships between cheese and tourism in rural areas. Based on a case study approach, data was collected through semi-structured interviews with cheesemakers and visits to cheesemaking facilities in Valle de Roncal (Roncal valley), a mountain region in northern Spain. Results of this research show that cheese producers in rural areas award tourism value to cheese by appreciating its historical linkages to land and landscapes, the rural lifestyle, and a regional communication of cheese. The originality of this paper lies on the approach to a niche tourism which is drawn from the understanding of cheese as both a local product and a tourist attraction, from the perspective of local producers in peripheries. This research informs rural tourism planners in the design of (food) tourist experiences that rely on a local-based storytelling.

      • Audiovisual composition using audiovisual sampling, synchronous granular synthesis and pseudorandom number generator algorithms

        이 글은 시청각 표본추출sampling, 동시발생 그래뉼러 합성 기술과 의사난수pseudorandom number 생성 알고리즘에 기초한 멀티채널 시청각 작품을 창작하는 새로운 방법에 대해 기술한다. 첫 순서로 시청각 표본추출의 프레임작업 시 아주 작은 부분의 시청각 재료audiovisual grain의 개념을 소개하고 분석한다. 두번째로, 앞서 언급한 개념을 사용하여 멀티채널 시청각 작곡의 새로운 방법을 제안한다: 시청각 동시발생 그래뉼러 합성 신서사이저의 디자인에서 시작하여, 어떤 난수 생성기가 이 디자인에 적합한지에 대해 이야기하고, 그 후 어떻게 시각적 요소들이 처리되는지 그리고 최종적으로 영상이 생산되는지 설명한다. 또한 여기서 제안한 방법에 기초하여 시청각 콘텐트를 생성하는 새로운 어플리케이션으로서 마이크로-브이에스12Micro-VS12를 제시한다. 마지막으로, 저자의 세 시청각 작품, 스피치2 Speech2(2015), 스피치3Speech3(2015), 세상의 소리The Sounds of the World(2016)를 간단히 분석하면서 시청각 창작 작품을 만드는 새로운 방법의 유효성을 입증한다. This paper describes a new method for creating multichannel audiovisual compositions based on audiovisual sampling, synchronous granular synthesis techniques and pseudorandom number generator algorithms. It firstly introduces and analyses the concept of audiovisual grain within the framework of audiovisual sampling. Secondly, it proposes a new method for multichannel audiovisual composition using aforementioned concepts: it starts with the design of an audiovisual synchronous granular synthesis synthesizer, then analyses which random number generators are suitable in this design, and, finally, describes how the visual elements are manipulated and the final video or videos generated. It also presents Micro-VS12, a new application for generating audiovisual content based on the method herein described. Finally, it briefly analyses Speech 2 (2015), Speech 3 (2015), and The Sounds of the World (2016), three audiovisual compositions, with which the author proves the validity of this method for generating audiovisual creative works.

        Transcriptional Regulation of the AP-1 and Nrf2 Target Gene Sulfiredoxin

        “Two-cysteine” peroxiredoxins are antioxidant enzymes that exert a cytoprotective effect in many models of oxidative stress. However, under highly oxidizing conditions they can be inactivated through hyperoxidation of their peroxidatic active site cysteine residue. Sulfiredoxin can reverse this hyperoxidation, thus reactivating peroxiredoxins. Here we review recent investigations that have shed further light on sulfiredoxin’s role and regulation. Studies have revealed sulfiredoxin to be a dynamically regulated gene whose transcription is induced by a variety of signals and stimuli. Sulfiredoxin expression is regulated by the transcription factor AP-1, which mediates its up-regulation by synaptic activity in neurons, resulting in protection against oxidative stress. Furthermore, sulfiredoxin has been identified as a new member of the family of genes regulated by Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) via a conserved cis-acting antioxidant response element (ARE). As such, sulfiredoxin is likely to contribute to the net antioxidative effect of small molecule activators of Nrf2. As discussed here, the proximal AP-1 site of the sulfiredoxin promoter is embedded within the ARE, as is common with Nrf2 target genes. Other recent studies have shown that sulfiredoxin induction via Nrf2 may form an important part of the protective response to oxidative stress in the lung, preventing peroxiredoxin hyperoxidation and, in certain cases, subsequent degradation. We illustrate here that sulfiredoxin can be rapidly induced in vivo by administration of CDDO-TFEA, a synthetic triterpenoid inducer of endogenous Nrf2, which may offer a way of reversing peroxiredoxin hyperoxidation in vivo following chronic or acute oxidative stress.

        Impact of urban pattern on operating costs of public services: quantification through the economic weight of services ‘to property’

        Research has shown the existence of strong links between physical configuration of the urban settlements and the economic metabolism of public services. However, this relationship has a different intensity depending on the nature of each service, resting exclusively on the services ‘to property’, that is, those ensuring smooth functionality of the buildings and public spaces. In such services, the operating cost per unit developed area largely depends on representative variables of the urban pattern. For instance, the length of roads per unit developed area impacts the operating costs of linear services, such as street lighting, street cleaning and, together with housing density, on the operating costs of water cycle, waste collection and disposal. Moreover, the maintenance costs of pavements, parks, and gardens are directly proportional to the dimension of the public space. Therefore, the economic weight of services ‘to property’ in the current budget of public administration highlights how vulnerable these budgets are against changes in the urban pattern and determines the expected maximum economic impact of any measure adopted through urban planning. Thus, the main objective of this study is to define, from a theoretical perspective, an indicator representative of the economic weight of the operating cost of the services ‘to property’ upon public administration budgets, capable of delimiting the relationship between the budgets and urban patterns. In addition, to show its utility, this urban-economic indicator has been computed for a sample of medium-sized Spanish cities, showing that, on an average, a quarter of the operating cost of urban public services is directly linked to urban patterns, highlighting the potential impact of urban planning decisions on the economic sustainability of urban settlements.

      • Recent Advances in Radar Technology for Environmental Applications

        Modern weather and environmental radar systems have enjoyed revolutionary transformation. This includes scientific advances such as multiple polarization, multiple wavelength and network sensing. Engineering advances include solid state transmitters, advanced signal processors aided by high performance computing, electronic scan antennas, and the ability to close the loop between radar observations and prevailing environment. The rapid advances are being tested and evaluated in several research locations including the CSU-CHILL radar facility. While many of these advances are interesting from a technological point of view, some of these will pass the “cost benefit analysis” tests, and are expected to find place in future operational applications.
