        Potential of Bacillus velezensis as a probiotic in animal feed: a review

        Bacillus velezensis is a plant growth-promoting bacterium thatcan also inhibit plant pathogens. However, based on its properties,it is emerging as a probiotic in animal feed. This reviewfocuses on the potential characteristics of B. velezensisfor use as a probiotic in the animal feed industry. The reviewwas conducted by collecting recently published articles frompeer-reviewed journals. Google Scholar and PubMed wereused as search engines to access published literature. Basedon the information obtained, the data were divided into threegroups to discuss the (i) probiotic characteristics of B. velezensis,(ii) probiotic potential for fish, and (iii) the future potentialof this species to be developed as a probiotic for theanimal feed industry. Different strains of B. velezensis isolatedfrom different sources were found to have the ability toproduce antimicrobial compounds and have a beneficial effecton the gut microbiota, with the potential to be a candidateprobiotic in the animal feed industry. This review providesvaluable information about the characteristics of B. velezensis,which can provide researchers with a better understandingof the use of this species in the animal feed industry.

        Households' dietary habits and food consumption patterns in Hamishkoreib locality, Kassala State, Sudan

        Background: Hamishkoreib is among the localities that have suffered most from chronic food insecurity in Kassala State, Sudan. This study was designed to determine the dietary habits and food consumption patterns in this locality. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 403 households in the Hamishkoreib locality from June 2014 to February 2015. Sociodemographic and dietary information was collected through a modified food frequency questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 16.0 to estimate the frequency of variables. Results: Among 403 households, the incidence of informal education and illiteracy was 93.3%. Charcoal production and firewood cutting as the main source of income was reported by 66.6%. Three meals per day were consumed by 83.4% of households. They depended largely on cereal foods, particularly sorghum in the form of kissra and assida. Milk and dairy products were dominant in breakfast and dinner. Meat was consumed by 67.7% of households just once per week. However, chicken, fish, and eggs were rarely consumed (1.5%, 0.7%, and 19.8% respectively). Most (85.3%) households related poor or rare consumption of these protein- rich foods to culture, while 14.7% related it to financial reasons or illness. These types of food were mainly consumed by men and were not allowed to be consumed by women and children. Tea and coffee were excessively consumed in the morning and during the day. Fruit and vegetable consumption was low. Conclusion: The study revealed consumption of an unbalanced diet with insufficient proteins and micronutrients. There was excessive consumption of tea and coffee, which had a negative impact on food intake and absorption. The paper recommends launching a major nutrition program to encourage diversity of food consumption and to improve the capacity building of households.

        Effect of Spore-Forming Probiotics on the Poultry Production: A Review

        Due to the bad aspects associated with the use of antibiotics, the pressure on poultry production prompted the efforts to find out suitable growth-promoting and disease-preventing alternatives. Although many cost-effective alternatives have been developed, currently, one of the most auspicious alternatives for poultry feed is spore-forming probiotics, which can exert more beneficial effects as compared to normal probiotics, because of their ability to withstand the harsh external and internal conditions which result in increased viability. Many studies have already used spore-forming probiotics to improve different parameters of poultry production. Our laboratory has recently isolated a spore-forming bacterial strain, which has the potential to be used as a probiotic. So, to provide a detailed understanding, the current review aimed to collect valuable references to describe the mechanism of action of spore-forming probiotics and their effect on all the key aspects of poultry production.

        Enhancement of bioactivity and bioavailability of curcumin with chitosan based materials

        Curcumin (CUR) has been investigated for its poor accessibility to a site of action or absorption and rapid metabolism to cope with the limited medication and cure applications. This article reviews numerous approaches, such as encapsulated surfactant/polymeric micelles, liposomes, micro/nano-spheres, nano-suspensions/composites, nanocomplex, films, and hydrogels for effective transfer of CUR to target sites. Chitosan (CS), and chitosan derivatives have been found to enhance therapeutic efficacy of CUR. CS/modified-CS based alginate, cyclodextrin, starch, dextran sulfate, ZnO, phytosomes, and poly(butyl) cyanoacrylate drug delivery matrices improved bioavailability, prolonged drug loading and permeability, sustained release rate, improved solubility and stability (prevent metabolic degradation) of CUR, consequently promoting various clinical applications. CS based polysaccharide, protein, and metal oxide drug delivery nano formulations advantageously participated to improve biological activities of CUR. We have attempted to summarize these delivery approaches, and reviewed future trends/strategies to permit the introduction of CUR as practical therapeutic drug.

        Synthesis and properties of aqueous polyurethane dispersions: Influence of molecular weight of polyethylene glycol

        Aqueous polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) have recently emerged as important alternatives to their solventbased counterparts for various applications due to increasing health and environmental awareness. A series of aqueous polyurethane dispersions containing carboxylate anion as hydrophilic pendant groups were synthesized through step growth polymerization reaction using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BDO), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different molecular weight. Effect of PEG molecular weight was investigated on molecular structure, contact angle measurement, and physical and adhesive properties of PU emulsions. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to check the completion of polymerization reaction. Contact angle measurement indicated that the hydrophilicity of polymer increases by increasing molecular weight of PEG with a corresponding decrease in contact angle. Results of T-peel test showed a decrease in peel strength by increasing molecular weight of PEG. Moreover, solid contents%, drying time and storage stability suggested fast drying properties and greater stability of aqueous PU dispersions.

        Polyaniline-engineered zinc sulphide nanocomposite as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution process

        Hydrogen is the ideal future fuel, since it is clean, saves energy, and is abundant in nature. Though there are several methods for producing hydrogen, only a few of them are environmentally friendly. To employ water electrolysis to make hydrogen and solve the energy shortage problem, highly active electrocatalysts must be created. Zinc sulphide/polyaniline (ZnS/PANI) nanocomposite was successfully produced using a straightforward two-step coprecipitation and polymerization procedure. Different analyses were used to characterize the fabricated materials. The findings show that the ZnS/PANI nanocomposite's morphology has a consistent porous shape, and the electrical structure of the active sites determines how well catalysts can make contact with the intermediates. Multiple attempts have been made to create the most affordable, functional electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reactions (OER). However, clean energy production from such materials is sluggish. In comparison to pure PANI nanofibers (143.14 m2 g−1 and 0.4827 nm) and ZnS nanostructures (249.85 m2 g−1 and 0.4224 nm), the composite ZnS/PANI displays a greater Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area around 372.65 m2 g−1 along with nanoporous size of 0.393 nm due to the interaction, which provides distinctive features in contrast to ZnS and PANI. Synergistically, composite ZnS/PANI indicates lower overpotentials of 132 mV for oxygen evolution performance at 10 mA cm−2. An improved OER activity is observed by composite ZnS/PANIs as high current density, lower overpotential and reduced Tafel value of 53 mV dec−1. This catalyst also exhibited a significant double-layer capacitance and a large electrochemically active surface area. ZnS/PANI is a magnificent electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution.

      • Finite element micro-modelling of RC frames with variant configurations of infill masonry

        The presence of infill generally neglected in design despite the fact that infill contribution significantly increase the lateral stiffness and strength of the reinforced concrete frame structure. Several experimental studies and computational models have been proposed to capture the rational response of infill-frame interaction at global level. However, limited studies are available on explicit finite element modelling to study the local behavior due to high computation and convergence issues in numerical modelling. In the current study, the computational modelling of RC frames is done with various configurations of infill masonry in terms of types of blocks, lateral loading and reinforcement detailing employed with material nonlinearities, interface contact issues and bond-slip phenomenon particularly near the beam-column joints. To this end, extensive computational modelling of five variant characteristics test specimens extracted from the detailed experimental program available in literature and process through nonlinear static analysis in FEM code, ATENA generally used to capture the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete structures. Results are presented in terms of damage patterns and capacity curves by employing the finest possible detail provided in the experimental program. Comparative analysis shows that good correlation amongst the experimental and numerical simulated results both in terms of capacity and crack patterns.

        Assessment of the antimicrobial and free radical scavenging activities of Moluccella spinosa, Helichrysum sanguineum, and Styrax officinalis folkloric medicinal plants from Palestine

        The emergence of pathogenic microbes with increased resistance to established antibiotics provides a major incentive for the discovery of new antimicrobial agents. Herbals may provide valuable solutions for this global problem. In addition, the replacement of harmful synthetic antioxidants with natural ones may prevent various serious diseases. The present investigation describes for the first time the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the aqueous and organic extracts of Helichrysum sanguineum, Moluccella spinosa and Styrax officinalis plants aerial parts. The free radical scavenging activity was estimated using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method, while the antimicrobial activity was evaluated against selected microbial strains from American Type Culture Collection and clinical isolates such as Shigella sonnie, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcuss feacium, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Epidermophyton floccosum and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) using minimum inhibitory concentration assay. A mixture of phytochemical compounds was found in all of the studied plants extracts which also showed remarkable potentials of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The current study provides initial data that justify the use and importance of these plants in the Palestinian traditional medicine. In addition, it provides evidence that the aqueous and organic extracts of H. sanguineum, M. spinosa and S. officinalis exhibited interesting antioxidant activity comparing with Trolox. Furthermore, the organic extract of H. sanguineum strongly exhibited bacterial growth of S. aureus, E. faecium and MRSA which suggested to be used as antibiotic alternative or as sufficient natural food preservative.
