Agency, structure, institutions, discourse (ASID) in urban and regional development

This paper presents the relations among agency (A), structure (S), institutions (I), and discourse (D) and their analytical relevance for socio-economic development. It argues that an adequate account of these relations must recognize their inherent spatio-temporality and, hence, their space–time dynamics. This is not an optional extra but a definite descriptive and explanatory requirement. Moreover, while structure is recognized as a product of pathdependent institutionalization and path-shaping (collective) agency, agency is seen in turn as discursively and materially reproduced and transformed. This approach treats structure in terms of a differential spatio-temporal configuration of constraints and opportunities, reference to which informs the empirical analysis of strategic agency within the overall agency, structure, institutions, discourse (ASID) heuristic. The paper concludes with an eightfold typology of particular combinations of ASID features to guide analyses of socio-economic development in all its (dis-) junctural complexity.

On the location of eigenvalues of real constant row-sum matrices

New inclusion sets are obtained for the eigenvalues of real matrices for which the all $1$'s vector is an eigenvector, i.e., the constant row-sum real matrices. A number of examples are provided. This paper builds upon the work of the authors in \cite{HM3}. The results of this paper are in terms of Ger\v{s}gorin discs of the second type. An application of the main theorem to bounding the algebraic connectivity of connected simple graphs is obtained.

Comparative Study on Time Averaged Wave Drifting Force

With the evolution of technology, newly built ships become larger in size, and the second order hydrodynamics starts playing its role. The added wave resistance for a large vessel and longitudinal and horizontal drifting force on a FPSO are well known examples. In this paper a direct pressure integration method is presented and applied to a few comparative studies. First the results of longitudinal drifting force in short regular incident waves are compared with the experiments. Another case is for a FPSO in which the mean wave drifting forces for a number of wave conditions obtained from WAVELOAD are compared with the same AQWA model. Finally vertical and lateral wave drifting forces for a two-ship interaction model is analyzed and compared with the experimental data. The advantage and disadvantage of the direct pressure integration method is addressed and some key factors in computation of drifting force with the presented method are discussed.

Conditional Labor Productivity Convergence in Canada

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the determinants of labor productivity growth at the provincial level in Canada over the 1966-92 period. The model considers differences in the initial level of labor productivity, human capital characteristics, private and public investments, and industry mix as explanatory variables in determining productivity growth. The main results are the following. The rate of human capital accumulation (its effect becomes more significant once the effects of inter-provincial migration are accounted for) and public investment (excluding government investment on non-residential construction) are positively correlated with productivity growth while the initial level of productivity and government consumption are negatively correlated with productivity growth. On the other hand, private investment is not significantly correlated with provincial productivity growth reflecting the high degree of private capital mobility between regions in Canada. Relatively slow convergence we observe in Canada appears, in part, to be due to differences in the industry mix across provinces.

이 논문은 독어정서법 개정에 대해서 다루고 있는데 특히 대한민국 문교부가 한글정서법 개정의 일환으로 발간한 「새 한글 맞춤법 사전」(권용경/김만수 엮음 박갑천 감수)-"이 책은 1988년 1월 19일 문교부가 새로 개정 고시하여 1989년 3월 1일부터 시행토록 한〈한글 맞춤법〉과〈표준어 규정〉을 기본자료로 하여 엮었다"-이 독일에서의 독어정서법 개정과 때를 같이한 것은 매우 흥미로운 사실이다. 비록 한국어의 경우 난잡한 철자를 한 철자로 고정시키는 작업에 불과했고 최신 과학에 일치하지 않는 감이 있는 듯하지만, 이를테면 독어를 다룬 부분(p.122∼124)에선 여전히 독어의 어미 'en'이 음성학적인 정확한 음절인 '은' 대신에 '엔'으로 쓰여져야 한다고 주장되고 있다. 오늘날까지 독어철자법에 대한 회의가 두 차례, 즉 1876년과 1901년에 있었다. 특히 1901년 의 독어정서법 개정의 결과로 많은 규정이 첨가되어 독어를 세계에서 가장 어려운 언어 중의 하나로 만드는 데 기여(!)했다. 이는 누구도 독어를 백 페센트 쓸 수 없다는 것에서도 잘 알 수 있는 일이거니와 과학적인 언어학 저서나 영국 언어학자에 의해 쓰여진 독어표준 정서법에서 조차도 많은 오류가 발견되고, 이는 독어를 공부하는 외국인에게 나쁜 영향을 미칠 것은 자명한 일이다. 이러한 이유로 해서 1988년 가을 독어정서법 개정에 대한 제안-1989년 5월에 시행-이 있었고 그 결과로 1991년에는 제3차 정서법 회의가 독어를 사용하는 모든 국가를 위해 열릴 예정이다. 1988년에 제안(proposal)된 주제들을 보면 1. 구둣법 2. 분철법 3. 붙여쓰기와 띄어쓰기 4. 소리와 쓰기의 관계 5. 외래어의 표기법이다. 인데 가장 논의가 많이 된 분야는 대문자 사용의 개정이며 소문자 개정은 포함되어 있지 않다. 본 논문은 개정된 독어정서법의 제 현상들을 다루었으며 상기의 제안(proposal)이 받아들여 진다면 한국의 학생이나 교수들을 위해서 일익이 되리라 믿는 바이다. 가정이긴 하지만 정서법의 변화는 적어도 두 세대를 거쳐야 할 것이고 제기된 개정으로 인해 모든 분야에서의 결렬한 병렬현상과 같은 많은 문제가 야기되리라 본다. 한 가지 중오한 이의(異意)는 제안(proposal)이 정서법만을 고려했지 정독법은 다루고 있지 않으므로 이에 대해 차후에 연구가 있어야 될 줄로 안다.

The MPI CyberMotion Simulator provides a unique motion platform, as it features an anthropomorphic robot with a large workspace, combined with an actuated cabin and a linear track for lateral movement. This paper introduces the simulator as a tool for studying human perception, and compares its characteristics to conventional Stewart platforms. Furthermore, an experimental evaluation is presented in which multimodal human control behavior is studied by identifying the visual and vestibular responses of participants in a roll-lateral helicopter hover task. The results show that the simulator motion allows participants to increase tracking performance by changing their control strategy, shifting from reliance on visual error perception to reliance on simulator motion cues. The MPI CyberMotion Simulator has proven to be a state-of-the-art motion simulator for psychophysical research to study humans with various experimental paradigms, ranging from passive perception experiments to active control tasks, such as driving a car or flying a helicopter.
