Applicability of abrasive waterjet cutting to irradiated graphite decommissioning

Characterization, dismantling and pre-disposal management of irradiated graphite (i-graphite) have an important role in safe decommissioning of several nuclear facilities which used this material as moderator and reflector. In addition to common radiation protection issues, easily volatizing long-lived radionuclides and stored Wigner energy could be released during imprudent retrieval and processing of i-graphite. With this regard, among all cutting technologies, abrasive waterjet (AWJ) can successfully achieve all of the thermo-mechanical and radiation protection objectives. In this work, factorial experiments were designed and systematically conducted to characterize the AWJ processing parameters and the machining capability. Moreover, the limitation of dust production and secondary waste generation has been addressed since they are important aspects for radiation protection and radioactive waste management. The promising results obtained on non-irradiated nuclear graphite blocks demonstrate the applicability of AWJ as a valid technology for optimizing the retrieval, storage, and disposal of such radioactive waste. These activities would benefit from the points of view of safety, management, and costs.

Apple has made successful product placements in many Hollywood box offices and won the Brand cameo award for Overall Product Placement in 2012. As marketing analyst Matthew Bywater points out, Apple has enjoyed this positioning as a cool and sexy image without paying a cent. Recently, Apple products have featured in films from Thailand and other South East Asian nations. Seven Something (2012) is one of the most successful Thai films, which strongly lend it to Apple product appearances. Thus, this paper investigates the phenomena by elaborating about conceptual briefs on product placement as well as Apple’s “unique” product placement by closely looking at the mise en scene and narratives of films which include the Apple product placements. A discussion on nations (in particular, Thailand) and their representation in film is also included. This paper uses in-depth interviews to understand how audiences perceive Apple and other product placements in film. Consequently, the Apple products appear in the film not only to promote the product and build the film narrative but moreover to symbolize the recent reality shift in Thai people’s lifestyles, specifically in Bangkok and related to that social network phenomenon. The Apple devices in the film are also used as frames to promote tourist icons in Bangkok, as well as representing Thailand as a modern nation. The saturation of Apple product placements in Seven Something also suggests that modern-day Thailand is also a potential consumer of Apple products.

The hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and aqueous-soluble fractions from leaves of Maytenus robusta (Celastraceae) were evaluated for their protective actions against ethanol-induced gastric lesions in rats. The treatment with all fractions (150 mg/kg) and omeprazol (30 mg/kg) significantly reduced the lesion index, the total lesion area, and the percentage of lesion, in comparison with the control group (p<0.05). Since the ethyl acetate-soluble fraction was found to be most active in the pylorus ligated model, this fraction was further investigated and resulted in the isolation of triterpene 3, 15-dioxo-21${\alpha}$-hydroxy friedelane. The triterpene was evaluated in the HCI/ethanol-induced ulcer model in mice. In this assay, both the groups treated with 3, 15-dioxo-21${\alpha}$-hydroxy friedelane and omeprazol, at a dose of 30 mg/kg, presented a significant redduction in lesion index, total lesion area, and in the percentage of the lesion, when compared with the control group (p<0.05). The result suggests that the antiulcer effect observed in the extract and fractions may be attributed, at least in part, to this compound. Further experiments are underway to determine which antiulcer mechanisms involved in gastroprotection.
A Platform based on Kanban to Build Taxonomies and Folksonomies for DMS and CSS

Taxonomies and folksnomies are useful tools to make documents fully accessible within a document management system. The choice of taxonomies and folksonomies is an important aspect which is often discussed without methodologies and supporting tools. Main goal of the proposed work is to define an approach based on the agile methodology Lean Kanban which allows to choose taxonomies and folksonomies. For this purpose, it has been developed a new application to support the definition, validation and implementation of taxonomies and folksonomies, according to the principle of Kanban, and to store the knowledge base which derives from it. This application aims at being a useful tool to easily implement the proposed approach and to store the metadata identified in a Document Management System or in a Cloud Storage Service.

<P/><P>We have developed a colloidal synthesis of nearly monodisperse nanocrystals of pure Cs<SUB>4</SUB>PbX<SUB>6</SUB> (X = Cl, Br, I) and their mixed halide compositions with sizes ranging from 9 to 37 nm. The optical absorption spectra of these nanocrystals display a sharp, high energy peak due to transitions between states localized in individual PbX<SUB>6</SUB><SUP>4–</SUP> octahedra. These spectral features are insensitive to the size of the particles and in agreement with the features of the corresponding bulk materials. Samples with mixed halide composition exhibit absorption bands that are intermediate in spectral position between those of the pure halide compounds. Furthermore, the absorption bands of intermediate compositions broaden due to the different possible combinations of halide coordination around the Pb<SUP>2+</SUP> ions. Both observations are supportive of the fact that the [PbX<SUB>6</SUB>]<SUP>4–</SUP> octahedra are electronically decoupled in these systems. Because of the large band gap of Cs<SUB>4</SUB>PbX<SUB>6</SUB> (>3.2 eV), no excitonic emission in the visible range was observed. The Cs<SUB>4</SUB>PbBr<SUB>6</SUB> nanocrystals can be converted into green fluorescent CsPbBr<SUB>3</SUB> nanocrystals by their reaction with an excess of PbBr<SUB>2</SUB> with preservation of size and size distributions. The insertion of PbX<SUB>2</SUB> into Cs<SUB>4</SUB>PbX<SUB>6</SUB> provides a means of accessing CsPbX<SUB>3</SUB> nanocrystals in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and compositions, an important aspect for the development of precisely tuned perovskite nanocrystal inks.</P>
