Effects of coloring procedures on zirconia/veneer ceramics bond strength

Erdal Eroglu,Pelin Ozat,İlkin Tuncel 대한치과보철학회 2014 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.6 No.6

PURPOSE The most common failure seen in restorations with a zirconia core is total or layered delamination of the ceramic veneer. In the present study, the shear bond strengths between veneering ceramics and colored zirconia oxide core materials were evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Zirconia discs (15 × 12 × 1.6 mm) were divided into 11 groups of 12 discs each. Groups were colored according to the Vita Classic scale: A3, B1, C4, D2, and D4. Each group was treated with the recommended shading time for 3 s, or with prolonged shading for 60 s, except for the control group. Samples were veneered with 3 mm thick and 3.5 mm in diameter translucent ceramic and subjected to shear test in a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's HSD tests were used for comparisons of the groups having the same shading times. A paired t-test was used for groups of the same color (3 s/60 s). RESULTS Among the 11 groups investigated C4 (3 s) had the highest bond strength with a value of 36.40 MPa, while A3 (3 s) showed the lowest bond strength with a value of 29.47 MPa. CONCLUSION Coloring procedures can affect zirconia/ceramic bond strength. However, the results also showed that bond strengths of all the investigated groups were clinically acceptable.

Does the Time From Biopsy to Radical Prostatectomy Affect Gleason Score Upgrading in Patients With Clinical T1c Prostate Cancer?

        Muzaffer Eroglu,Omer Gokhan Doluoglu,Hasmet Sarici,Onur Telli,Berat Cem Ozgur,Selen Bozkurt 대한비뇨의학회 2014 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.55 No.6

Purpose: It is debated whether treatment delay worsens oncologic results in localizedprostate cancer (PCa). Few studies have focused on the role of a delay between the timeof biopsy and the time of surgery. Thus, we aimed to investigate the effect of the timeperiod between biopsy and surgery on Gleason score upgrading (GSU). Materials and Methods: A total of 290 patients who underwent radical retropubic prostatectomyin Ankara Training and Research Hospital were included in the study. Thebiopsy Gleason score, age, total prostate-specific antigen (PSA) value, prostate volumes, and PSA density (PSAD) were analyzed in all patients. The patients were dividedinto two groups: patients with GSU (group 1) and patients without GSU (group 2). Variables having a p-value of ≤0.05 in the univariate analysis were selected and thenevaluated by use of multivariate logistic regression models. Results were consideredsignificant at p<0.05. Results: GSU occurred in 121 of 290 patients (41.7%). The mean age of the patientswas 66.0±7.2 years in group 1 and 65.05±5.60 years in group 2 (p=0.18). The mean PSAvalues of groups 1 and 2 were 8.6±4.1 and 8.8±4.3 ng/dL, respectively. The mean prostatevolumes of groups 1 and 2 were 43.8±14.1 and 59.5±29.8 mL, respectively. ThePSAD of group 1 was significantly higher than that of group 2 (0.20 vs. 0.17, p=0.003). The mean time to surgery was shorter in group 2 (group 1, 52.2±22.6 days; group 2,45.3±15.5 days; p=0.004). According to the logistic regression, time from biopsy to surgeryis important in the prediction of GSU. Conclusions: We suggest that the time period between biopsy and surgery is a significantfactor that affects GSU in patients with clinically localized PCa.

The effect of coloring liquids on the translucency of zirconia framework

Tuncel, Ilkin,Eroglu, Erdal,Sari, Tugrul,Usumez, Aslihan The Korean Academy of Prosthodonitics 2013 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.5 No.4

PURPOSE. Translucency of all-ceramic restorations is an important factor which affects the final appearance and esthetic outcome of the restoration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the shade of coloring liquid on the translucency of zirconia framework. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty zirconium oxide core plate ($15{\times}12{\times}0.5$ mm) were divided into 6 groups of 5 plates each. Each group was classified according to the shade of coloring liquid based on Vita Classic Scale (A2, A3, B1, C2, and D2), and each sample was immersed in coloring liquid for 3 seconds as recommended by the manufacturer, except for the control group. Contrast ratio, as a translucency parameter, was calculated using a spectrophotometer and the data were analyzed with oneway analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's honestly significant differences (HSD) tests (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. Significant differences in translucency among the control and test groups, and the B1 shaded group and other shades was observed. There were no significant differences among A2, A3, C2, and D2 shaded groups. CONCLUSION. The translucency of the zirconium oxide cores was affected by the coloring procedure and significant differences in the translucency measurements were identified between specific shades.

      • ABO Blood Groups are Not Associated with Treatment Response and Prognosis in Patients with Local Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Unal, Dilek,Eroglu, Celalettin,Kurtul, Neslihan,Oguz, Arzu,Tasdemir, Arzu,Kaplan, Bunyamin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.6

Background: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, late diagnosis being the main obstacle to improving the outcomes with stage at diagnosis as an important prognostic factor. Relationships between ABO blood groups and risk of benign or malignant diseases have been observed and in this study, we aimed to investigate whether they might affect prognosis and response to chemoradiotherapy in patients with local advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Materials and Methods: Eighty-one patients with non-metastatic local advanced NSCLC were included in the study. ABO blood groups were A in 45 (55.6%), B in 7 (8.6%), AB in 8 (9.9%), and O in 21 (25.9%) patients. The patients were also divided two groups according to blood group A (45 patients) and non-A (B, AB and O; 36 patients). Response to chemoradiotherapy was complete remission in 10 (12.3%), disease regression in 42 (51.9%), stable disease in 12 (14.8%), and disease progression in 17 (21.0%) patients. Results: There was no significant difference among ABO blood group categories or between patients with A blood group and those with non-A blood group in terms of responses to chemoradiotherapy (p>0.05). There were also no significant differences regarding overall and disease-free survival rates. Conclusion: The ABO blood group system has no significant effect on prognosis and response to chemoradiotherapy in patients with non-metastatic NSCLC.

      • Are Neutrophil/Lymphocyte and Platelet/Lymphocyte Rates in Patients with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Associated with Treatment Response and Prognosis?

Unal, Dilek,Eroglu, Celalettin,Kurtul, Neslihan,Oguz, Arzu,Tasdemir, Arzu Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.9

Background: Inflammation is a critical component of tumor progression. Many cancers arise from sites of infection, chronic irritation, and inflammation. It is now becoming clear that the tumour microenvironment, which is largely orchestrated by inflammatory cells, is an essential participant in the neoplastic process, promoting proliferation, survival and migration. Platelets can release some growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor, platelet factor 4, and thrombospondin. Such factors have been shown to promote hematogenous tumour spread, tumor cell adhesion and invasion, and angiogenesis and to play an important role in tumor progression. In this study, we aimed to investigate effects of the pretreatment neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) on survival and response to chemoradiotherapy in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Materials and Methods: Ninety-four patients with non-metastatic NSCLC were included and separated into two groups according to median valuse of NLR and PLR (low:<3.44 or high:${\geq}3.44$ and low:<194 or high${\geq}194$, respectively). Results: Pretreatment high NLR and PLR were associated with significantly shorter disease-free and overall survival rates. Multivariate analysis revealed that the overall survival rates were significantly linked with PLR (OR: 1.87, CI: 1.20-2.91, p: 0.006) and response to chemoradiotherapy (OR: 1.80, CI: 1.14-2.81, p: 0.012) and the disease-free survival rates were significantly associated with NLR (OR: 1.81, CI: 1.16-2.82, p: 0.009) and response to chemoradiotherapy (OR: 2.30, CI: 1.45-3.66, p: 0.001). There was no significant difference between patients with high and low NLR in terms of response to chemoradiotherapy. Similarly, there was no significant influence of the PLR. Conclusions: Pretreatment NLR and PLR measurements can provide important prognostic results in patients with NSCLC and assessment of the two parameters together appears to better predict the prognosis in patients with NSCLC. The effect of inflammation, indicators of NLR and PLR, on survival seems independent of the response to chemoradiotherapy.

      • Prognostic Value of SPARC Expression in Unresectable NSCLC Treated with Concurrent Chemoradiotherapy

        Kurtul, Neslihan,Eroglu, Celalettin,Unal, Dilek,Tasdemir, Erdem Arzu,Orhan, Okan,Zararsiz, Gokmen,Baran, Munevver,Kaplan, Bunyamin,Kontas, Olgun Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.20

Background: The aim of the present study was to determine the predictive/prognostic value of the secreted protein, acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) in cases of unresectable, locally advanced, non-small cell lung cancer. Materials and Methods: The study included 84 patients with Stage IIIA-B non-small cell lung cancer, undergoing simultaneous chemoradiotherapy including radiotherapy at a dose of 66 Gy and weekly docataxel ($20mg/m^2$) and cisplatin ($20mg/m^2$). SPARC expression was studied in biopsy material by immunohistochemical methods and correlations with treatment responses or survival were evaluated. Results: Median overall survival was $16{\pm}2.73$ (11.55-20.46) months for low expression vs $7{\pm}1.79$ months (7.92-16.08) months for high expression (p=0.039), while median local control was $13{\pm}2.31$ (8.48-17.5) months for low expression vs $6{\pm}0.85$ (4.34-7.66) months for high expression (p=0.045) and median progression-free survival was $10{\pm}2.31$ (5.48-14.5) months for low expression vs $6{\pm}1.10$ (3.85-8.15) months for high expression (p=0.022). In both univariate and multivariate analyses, high SPARC expression was associated with significantly shorter overall survival (p=0.003, p=0.007, respectively), local control (p=0.008, p=0.036) and progression-free survival (p=0.004, p=0.029) when compared to low SPARC expression. No significant difference was detected between high and low SPARC expression groups regarding age, sex, T stage, N stage, histopathology and stage-related patient characteristics. Conclusions: High SPARC expression was identified as a poor prognostic factor in cases with locally advanced NSCLC treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy.

The Utility of Intraoperative Handheld Gamma Camera for Detection of Sentinel Lymph Nodes in Melanoma

        Elgin Ozkan,Aydan Eroglu 대한핵의학회 2015 핵의학 분자영상 Vol.49 No.4

Accurate identification of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) is an important prognostic factor for melanoma. In a minority of cases drainage to interval nodal basins, such as the epitrochlear region, are possible. Intraoperative handheld gamma cameras have been used to detect SLNs which are located in different anatomical localizations. In this case we report the utility of an intraoperative handheld gamma camera in the localization of epitrochlear drainage of distal upper extremity melanoma and its impact on surgical procedure.

Topan, Aysel,Ozturk, Ozlem,Eroglu, Hulya,Bahadir, Ozgur,Harma, Muge,Harma, Mehmet Ibrahim Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.6

Purpose: To determine knowledge levels of working and student nurses about cervical cancer and prophylactic cancer vaccines. Materials and Methods: This study was performed on 259 nursing students in the Department of Nursing and 137 nurses working in Health Research and Practice Center, approved to participate in the study between April-June 2012. The study was performed universally without selecting a sample. A questionnaire that was prepared for evaluating participants' knowledge and attitudes about human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine was distributed to the nurses and data obtained from the forms were transferred to SPSS 15.00 program and statistically analyzed. Results: It was found that 54.8% of the student nurses were between 21-24 years old and 13.1% of working students were between 25-28 years old. When student nurses and working nurses were compared in terms of their knowledge about the causes of cervical cancer, their ideas about prevention from cervical cancer with HPV vaccine, their ideas about possible risks of HPV vaccine and conservation ratios of HPV vaccine, it was observed that there were no statistically significant differences (p>0.05). When student nurses and working nurses were compared in terms of the information-source about HPV, ways of HPV contamination, awareness about people who are susceptible to HPV contamination and age of HPV vaccination, it was determined that there was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusions: It was found that all nurses had some knowledge about cervical cancer and HPV vaccine, but this was not sufficient. Therefore; it is recommended to use verbal, written and visual communication tools intensively in order to have topics on cervical cancer, early diagnosis and prevention in bachelor and master programs for nurses, to inform society about cervical cancer and HPV vaccine for public health and to teach precautions for its prevention.
