On the Production of Axial Prepositions: Linking Figure and Ground in Broca`s Aphasia: A Case Study

We report the case of a classic agrammatic speaker of Italian in repeating locative Figure/Ground relations via complex prepositions consisting of a locative axial preposition and a simple preposition in light of recent theoretical accounts of prepositions and the existing literature on prepositions in aphasia. The repetition data showed greater rates of omission for simple than axial prepositions, and a trade-off between the inclusion of the Figure and the Axial preposition. Grounds tended to be preserved. These results are unexpected on accounts that simple prepositions are more functional in nature than axial prepositions and argue for an analysis in which axial prepositions can take on a functional grammatical role. To account for the repetition data we propose that the agrammatic processor is unable to fill and retain functional Axial Parts. Hence, it links Figure and Ground through a reduced configuration, mediated by the simple preposition operating as a relational item and not a functional category. The clinical data presented here add to the empirical data set against which to test the validity of finergrained distinctions among prepositions and compare different theoretical views of the status of prepositions.

The degradation of pyridine, widely used in the synthesis of vitamins, drugs, rubber chemicals, herbicides and pesticides, can be photocatalyzed by semiconductor catalysts. Since zinc oxide promotes faster pyridine photocatalytic oxidation reactions than TiO2, the former appears to be a suitable alternative to TiO2 for water treatment contaminated with pyridine. The photodegradation efficiency was negligible when the photolysis was carried out in the absence of any catalyst. The formation and eventual disappearance of intermediate organic reaction products during the photocatalytic oxidation of pyridine was monitored by a combination of analytical techniques such as UV-Vis, HPLC, TOC and NMR. Based on experimental observations, an alternative mechanism is proposed for the photocatalytic oxidation of pyridine. In addition, the kinetic parameters of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model that describe the initial reaction rate for the photocatalytic degradation of pyridine over TiO2 and ZnO are presented. Music Listening Exercises to Reduce Psychosomatic Stress in College Students

College students balance many stressors in their everyday lives and should seek to find ways to help them destress every once in a while. The purpose of this experimental study is to compare three types of music interventions used to reduce stress levels for college students. Participants completed surveys with their assigned 15-minute YouTube music listening exercise; they were passive music listening (n=4), guided music meditation (n=7), and music and progressive muscle relaxation (M+PMR) (n=3). Their current stress levels were measured using an adapted perceived stress questionnaire (PSQ) before and after the exercise, and additional questions regarding their experience were also asked in the post-exercise survey. Results found that the guided music meditation exercise had the largest change from pre- to post-exercise adapted PSQ scores of the three exercises. Overall, the guided music meditation exercise showed the most effective influence on decreasing current stress in college students.
Beyond Akogare: The White Female in Japanese Underwear Advertisements

This paper examines the ways in which the “white body” has been constructed in Japanese underwear advertisements, as well as the emotions that may circulate in relation to these images. After presenting an overview of previous academic literature on whiteness in Japan, I argue that promotional material which does not go through major mass media channels can offer us useful insights into how Japanese culture regards white bodies. In underwear catalogues, the female white body is used in ways that are congruent with Japanese body aesthetics, tending to avoid an overly sexualized depiction of the female form. Furthermore, an analysis of the reception of these advertisements reveals how representations of the white body elicit feelings that go beyond desire (akogare). Admiration for the physical form of non-Japanese models is in fact enmeshed with a sort of emotional distance that makes it harder for the female audience to compare the white body with their own bodies as well as to imagine it as an object of sexual desire. This paper comprises part of a larger study on the ways emotions towards racialized bodies circulate on the Japanese archipelago. An analysis of the workings of these affective economies might provide an insight into how racialized knowledges operate throughout daily life practices.

대학의 경쟁력은 대학총장의 역할 수행능력 및 그의 지도성과 밀접한 관계가 있으며, 이에 총장평가 시스템은 총장직(presidency)을 강화시키기 위한 하나의 효율적인 행정전략 도구로 사용된다. 이러한 관점에서, 본 연구는 최근 한국 대학에서 실시되고 있는 총장평가시스템에 대해 연구함으로써, 앞으로 보다 실용적이고 효율적인 총장평가 시스템을 개발ㆍ활용하는데 필요한 기본적인 지식과 자료를 확보하는 것을 그 목적으로 하였다. 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 본 연구는 다음과 같이 크게 두 분야의 연구를 진행하였다. 첫째, 기존 실시된 한국 대학의 총장평가 사례들을 조사하였다. 사례들은 평가실시 주체, 평가목적, 평가방법 및 평가결과 활용 부분으로 나뉘어 분석되었으며, 이 과정을 통하여 한국 대학총장 평가 시스템의 현황 및 특징, 그리고 문제점을 파악할 수 있었다. 둘째, 기존평가 사례들의 두드러진 공통적 특징 중의 하나가 교수협의회에 의한 단독 평가 주관 및 실시 그리고 이에 따른 추가적 문제점 발생이었으므로, 본 연구에서는 대학을 구성하는 다양한 대학집단(대학이사회, 총장, 행정직원, 교수협의회, 교수)들의 총장평가 목적, 방법 및 결과활용 등에 관한 의견을 조사하였다. 조사결과에 의하면, 기존 교수협의회에서 실시한 총장평가 방식은 다른 대학구성원들이 선호하는 평가방식과 확연히 다름을 알 수 있었으며, 의견조사 참여자들 간에도 직급별로 의견일치를 보이는 평가관련 이슈와 의견을 달리하는 이슈가 확연히 분리됨을 알 수 있었다. 의견 차이를 보이는 이슈들은 보통 각 집단의 이해관계와 관련이 있었으며, 한국 대학 총장평가 관련 가장 큰 이슈는 ‘교수’의 평가 참여여부 또는 참여 정도를 결정하는 일임을 알 수 있었다. The competitiveness of universities is closely associated with the president's performance ability and leadership. The presidential evaluation system is utilized as an effective strategic tool to strengthen the presidency. This study is aimed to acquire the basic necessary knowledge and information for the development of an effective presidential evaluation system in Korean universities. In order to achieve the objective, this study conducted two major researches. First, case studies of past Korean universities' presidential evaluations were conducted regarding the issues of purpose of evaluation, methodology of evaluation, and utilization of evaluation results. The analysis of case studies led to the understanding of characteristics and problems of Korean presidential evaluation systems. Second, since one of the distinctive features of past evaluations was the independent role of the faculty council in initiating and implementing the evaluations and the ensuing problems, this study conducted the questionnaire survey on the opinions of various university constituencies (board of trustees, presidents, administrative staffs, faculty council members, faculty members) on the relevant issues of presidential evaluations. Through the analysis, it was realized that the methods of past presidential evaluations by faculty councils were clearly different from the methods preferred by other constituent groups. There was a distinctive division of issues that showed agreement and discord depending on the constituent groups. The issues that showed discord of opinions were related to each group's interests and it was evident that the most important issue in Korean university's presidential evaluation system is the faculty's participation or the degree of participation in presidential evaluations.

이 연구는 대학의 총장직(college presidency) 강화와 더불어 궁극적으로는 대학의 발전을 도모하기 위한 하나의 평가기제로 인식되고 있는 미국 대학 총장평가 시스템에 관한 연구이다. 대학의 경쟁력은 그 대학 총장의 역할 수행능력 및 지도성과 밀접한 관계가 있다는 전제하에, 미국 대학들은 총장직 강화를 위하여 어떻게 총장평가 시스템을 활용하고 있는지 알아보고, 이를 통해 한국대학 실정과 상황에 보다 적합하고 효과적인 총장평가 시스템을 개발하는데 필요한 기본지식과 자료를 확보하는 것에 본 연구의 목적을 둔다.<br/> 이 목적을 달성하기 위하여 본 연구는 미국 대학 총장평가 관련내용을 (1) 총장평가의 기원, (2) 총장평가의 목적, (3) 총장평가의 방법, (4) 총장평가 결과의 활용 등 네 분야로 나누고, 이에 대한 관련 선행연구들을 분석, 문헌연구를 진행하였다.<br/> 본 연구를 통해 총장평가 시스템의 기본적인 성격을 1) 총장평가 목적의 건설적, 긍정적 성격, (2) 총장평가 방법 및 결과활용의 전문적, 실용적, 유익적(beneficial) 성격 두 가지로 정리 요약하였으며, 이 연구결과를 기초로 내린 결론은 총장평가는 궁극적으로 총장의 발전을 위한 건설적이고 전향적인 지원체제이어야 하며, 이를 위해 총장평가 시스템은 각 대학의 독자적인 성격과 상황적 특성에 맞게 신중하고 전문적으로 설계되어야 하고, 평가결과는 그것의 목적에 따라 실용적으로 활용되어야 하며, 결국 대학의 발전을 도모하기 위한 유익하고 효과적인 시스템이어야 한다는 것이다. 위와 같은 이해를 바탕으로, 앞으로 실시될 한국대학 총장평가는 그 유익성과 효과성을 극대화시킬 수 있는 독자적인 평가방법을 개발하는데 깊은 연구와 노력을 다해야 할 것이다. This study focuses on the issue of the presidential evaluation system in U.S. universities and colleges, which has been widely regarded as a supporting mechanism for the improvement of the college presidency as well as for the institutional development. Based on the assumption that the school competitiveness is highly dependent on its president's performance skills and leadership, this study conducted the literature review research in order to understand how the U.S. presidential evaluation system is utilized for the improvement of the college presidency. The contents of the study is mainly divided into the following four domains: (1) Origin of the presidential evaluation; (2) Purpose of the presidential evaluation; (3) Methodological aspects of the presidential evaluation; (4) Usage of evaluation outcomes. Based on the information and knowledge gathered throughout the research, the distinctive characteristics of U.S. presidential evaluation were capsulated into the following two aspects: (1) constructive and positive intention of the U.S. presidential evaluation, (2) professional, practical, and beneficial approaches in its methodology and utilization of evaluation outcomes.<br/> As for the conclusion, the main principle of the presidential evaluation system lies in the consequential significance of benefiting not only the president but also ultimately the development of the institution. In this light, the principle of the presidential evaluation should be well preserved in developing future presidential evaluations in Korean universities better befitting their unique needs and settings as well as maximizing the effectiveness of the presidential evaluation system.

Biosynthesis of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) via the indole-3-pyruvic acid pathway involves three kinds of enzymes; aminotransferase encoded by aspC, indole-3-pyruvic acid decarboxylase encoded by ipdC, and indole-3-acetic acid dehydrogenase encoded by iad1. The ipdC from Enterobacter cloacae ATCC 13047, aspC from Escherichia coli, and iad1 from Ustilago maydis were cloned and expressed under the control of the tac and sod promoters in E. coli. According to SDS-PAGE and enzyme activity, IpdC and Iad1 showed good expression under the control of Ptac, whereas AspC was efficiently expressed by Psod originating from Corynebacterium glutamicum. The activities of IpdC, AspC, and Iad1 from the crude extracts of recombinant E. coli Top 10 were 215.6, 5.7, and 272.1 nmol/min/mg-protein, respectively. The recombinant E. coli DH5α expressing IpdC, AspC, and Iad1 produced about 1.1 g/l of IAA and 0.13 g/l of tryptophol (TOL) after 48 h of cultivation in LB medium with 2 g/l tryptophan. To improve IAA production, a tnaA gene mediating indole formation from tryptophan was deleted. As a result, E. coli IAA68 with expression of the three genes produced 1.8 g/l of IAA, which is a 1.6- fold increase compared with wild-type DH5α harboring the same plasmids. Moreover, the complete conversion of tryptophan to IAA was achieved by E. coli IAA68. Finally, E. coli IAA68 produced 3.0 g/l of IAA after 24 h cultivation in LB medium supplemented with 4 g/l of tryptophan.
